The coffee itself was good quality, and you can tell they're starting with a strong foundation. I enjoyed the drinks I ordered, and they were well-made and nicely presented. My only critique is that they leaned a little too sweet for my taste. The flavourings tended to overpower the coffee, and I found myself wishing the coffee came through a bit more. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the service was friendly, making it an easy place to stop in and relax for a bit. Good drinks, quality coffee, and a pleasant environment. I'd definitely come back, but next time I'd probably ask for less sweetness so I can better appreciate the coffee itself.

There was no one there when we went and they were pretty fast with everyone friendly. I thought the drink was pretty good and would gladly get it again. I don't know if their clover is messed up because I've had good dark roast from that machine at this location....or if someone put pike beans in the dark Roast slot. Yesterday I went through the drive thru and thought perhaps someone pressed the wrong button. Today went inside and made sure I saw them press the dark roast button. Trust me....i drink BLACk dark roast at Starbucks all ie r the country. I KNOW when I'm not getting dark roast....whether Verona or Sumatra or whatever. I prefer some dark Roasts over others but they are all accretive and all taste like dark roast.

The employees were rude and snobbish to the driver. I'm not going back. I hope everyone avoids them. I get businesses have to make a profit but this was too much for my eyes to witness.

The furniture is functional, might not even all match...all good. Route 138 Cafe is that second kind of place. The name alone, is so plain sense Midwest, practical. It not some whimsical thought excercise like Nutmeg Hutch or some such. There are no fancy uniforms, the staff might have on T-shirts from the restaurant. We have had no issues with any of the staff, they have been nothing but pleasant, effective and welcoming. We have been here a few times now since moving to the area, this was the first time for lunch. I had a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with seasoned fries, my wife got a BLT with same. Do splurge for the "special" fries vs. the standard crinkle cut. Somehow crinkle cut fries take me back to elementary school, and no matter how hot and great they may be in this present time, they take me back to luke warm unsalted punishment on a plastic tray. There is nothing fancy about anything I have eaten here. It's not perfect, what is- it is also obviously put together with care. That goes a long way. I have had beautiful, expensive meals and left hungry and full of regret. We left Saturday afternoon feeling full, comfortable and starting to fit in to our "fly-over" retirement.

We waited 50 minutes for a chicken wrap and roast beef. They didn't have silverware clean, so we had to wait another 5 or 10 minutes for that after the food came out. There was one cook in the kitchen audibly yelling in the kitchen in time. Though the staff seemed overwhelmed were overwhelmed, although there were less than 10 tables. As someone with experience managing bars and restaurants all over St. Louis, the fault here lies with the owners or management. The staff were not set up for success. There should absolutely be a manager on duty. In fact, it's the law - in illinois you must have certified food protection manager on sight at all times. Not having a second cook on duty sounds like ownership trying to cheap out on overhead. The food was ok. Not bad, and not good. I'm not sure how this place passed a health inspection.

However, I came back to Springfield for a visit and gave them a try - and it was absolutely worth the wait. I had their Fall Over soup -- chicken stock, homemade sausage, sweet potato and pear. Even my 3-year-old said it was one of her favorite soups she's ever had! I also tried the Aloha sandwich - toasted pretzel roll, Korean BBQ pulled pork, pineapple chutney, mixed greens, and tomatoes. Both of these sweet and savory dishes were incredible, and I'll likely stop by for lunch again before we head home next week. Aside from the food, this new location has much more space and brings a new energy with it. Many of us have nostalgia for the former location, but I like this one as well.
