Rarely do I feel like I need to write a review for anywhere, but Hubba Hubba deserves the hype. Every time I've needed advice for a product the staff delivers in friendliness and enthusiasm. They know their stuff and they have been in business long enough to earn their good rep. Their front window displays alone are always so fun to pass by and enjoy since they switch it up every season; reminding me of a more fun version of the movie Mannequin. I also just learned yesterday that they work with a leather worker for their wide selection of chokers, cuffs, bulldog harnesses, etc. the leather work is soft and comfortable and criminally affordable; they even offer custom made pieces made to fit for the same price as the ready made product! How do they do this?? I love you guys. A small other detail I love is the personality of the space. They have their own line of shirts with fun prints on them and unique art on the walls that I had just as much fun looking at while browsing. My inclination is to be entirely supportive of a female-owned sex shop -- I mean, why wouldn't we be? Both things are far too rare. However, after purchasing a device here and wishing to purchase a larger-sized component from either the store or the manufacturer, Hubba Hubba refused to disclose the manufacturer. The device has strong resemblance to those from a well-established manufacturer, but with some minor difference indicating it might be a knock-off. This is a product that touches one's intimate parts, and I'm now left with fairly expensive item, with no information at all about who made it, safety issues, etc. My interaction with Hubba Hubba by phone about this was extremely disappointing. They were extremely evasive, which makes me suspicious that this may be a counterfeit product, and offered nothing by way of standing behind the product or the integrity of the store. I feel very disheartened and poorly treated as a customer. They are essentially concealing the origin of certain devices in their store. read more

This place was once a fixture in the community, with lots of great inventory and great staff, when it was on Mass Ave. It was a place you felt good about supporting and felt welcome to enter. No longer. After moving to a sad basement location on a sadder side street a few blocks away, the inventory is pathetic, the lighting from a horror flick, and completely unwelcoming by staff. When I entered earlier this year, I asked a question and clearly the woman behind the counter was pissed I dared to disturbed her; they had a paltry clothing selection of cheap crap, limited sizing, and the same for the other merchandise. She couldn't have cared less for my business, and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The energy in the place is super negative now - it is a black hole of yuck. In the last 24 hours, I now see the owner is tone deaf on racism and antagonizing a population that needs support more than ever - and even doubling down when Black and other people of color tried to educate her. The experience above was to a white woman on a day when the store was empty - I can't imagine how she must treat a Black woman, or other person of color, especially if there were an actual group of patrons at the same time adding stress. I also realize now that the person who couldn't be bothered to have a customer was likely the owner - which speaks volumes also about the business in total. I was already committed to never entering this store again after my last visit, but now I see they should just close it down - as a company that should be about acceptance, inclusiveness, and support of all people, they fail. As a place that welcomes customers into their shop, they fail. As a purveyor of a variety of quality goods, they fail. As an owner that shares values of their community, she fails. They were in pretty bad shape last I visited. Manager lady was actually yelling emotionally at an employee over the phone about coming to work. Puts you on edge. They were telling people that they are simply moving locations, though they were honest about not having found a place as of yet. Slightly surly service, but that's to be expected at a struggling shop with strewn-about stock. Expect to pay cash if your item is under $10. The items for sale are sometimes worn with age & dust. I have been here a few times. Let me start by saying compared to almost all sex stores, this one not creepy. The staff don't always come off as super friendly, but they are if you ask for help. They give you space, isn't that what you want when you are discreetly shopping? It may feel strange to you walking to the underground store with neon signs about sex toys, but what the heck do you expect? I have been to a few stores that are "high end" and discreet, but they never have a good selection. This store is great because it has some more unusual things for a sex store. It has a lot of collars, cuffs, hoods, and clothing. Most sex shops have walls of toys and sex dolls. This one does not. It makes if feel much more inviting. They do have some good toys and lingerie. They have some awesome clothing for everyday or fetish wear. I have purchased a few vegan leather items from here. Apparently a lot of their leather goods are made to order for the store by a local guy. The staff was helpful informing me what items were vegan. Aw, le pauvre! I actually wanted to give less stars for this review, but I just can't do it because so many memories are tied up in this place (pun intended!) After ManRay closed, I was wondering what might happen to Hubba and my assumptions have proved correct. Instead of remaining a S&M and Goth haven, Hubba has now become more of a sex toy store. Sure, you can go in and find all kinds of books, dildos, and cheap, plastic handcuffs, but what happened to the real flava?! Back when I was new to Boston and making no money at a crappy temp job, I used to squeal with delight at all of the hot Gothy numbers that used to grace the racks. Things there have always been expensive, but at least my rent was only $250 a month, so an occasional splurge was something I could actually do. I still have all of my stuff too, like two Versatile Corsets corsets, a couple of Catherine Coatney mesh skirts, and a PolyMorphe latex evening gown. The only issue now is that I have no where to wear these things anymore, so they just sit in a plastic Rubber Maid bin, waiting for the second coming. Hubba also had a very decent selection of S&M gear: harnesses, whips, paddles, and all kinds of things to keep your local Dom happy. At some of the area's fetish nights, there would even be an occasional 'fashion show' (with yours truly as a model) where you could see these things live and on stage. Now that's kinky! Its funny because over the years, there have been a ton of rumors regarding the re-opening of ManRay. One interesting one was that ManRay was actually going to open at the current site of Hubba Hubba. I'm giving them 4 stars while admitting that one of those stars is more based on good memories than current conditions. When I was in college and was gothy mc goth pants this was the place to shop. They had tons of gorgeous goth and fetish wear that was priced pretty well, had a very friendly staff...going there was always a positive experience. I went in there recently and was really surprised at the dearth of fetish wear they were peddling (where did all the latex, rubber, vinyl, pvc, and metal boned corsets go???) as well as the more risque toys like paddles or riding crops. Now there are lots of books, dildos and vibrators, which is great and all but I think maybe a little too vanilla for a fetish shop, especially when we've got Amazing and Good Vibrations not too far away. Their leather selection seemed pretty good, but I don't wear leather so no good for me. I'm attending a wig party tonight, so I went wig shopping yesterday. I priced wigs at Venus Salon, The Garment District, and Hubba Hubba. Hubba Hubba turned out to be the place with the most inexpensive/bold wigs so I decided to buy from them. The employee had been very helpful and friendly up until that point. When I walked up to the counter, I handed him my $25 purchase, and he was all, "Cash?" I said, "Is credit okay?" and handed him my card. He was like, "Oh. [big pause and annoyed face] Yeah, I *guess* that's fine," with this gruff tone like it was totally an imposition, and I should consider it a favor that he allowed me to charge this. Okay, first of all, this was a $25 purchase -it's not like I was charging a pack of gum. Second of all, you're not supposed to do that - if you have a Visa/MC logo in your window, you can't refuse to honor purchases on a card. Third of all, they had a telephone-credit card-checky thingie (That's the technical term for it, I'm sure). It wasn't like he had to get one of those carbon copy imprint thingies out and go through a huge process. I'm pretty sure the only reason he was huffy about it was because he had to write up a little receipt. And that is kinda bad customer service if you ask me. He also bagged up my stuff for me in a nice bag with a handle, but his boss came by and made him re-bag it in a smaller, paper sack (no handle) in order to save bags. Not a huge deal, but I wouldn't have minded a bag with a handle. They're a little more convenient. And to get a downgrade right in front of my eyes was a little annoying. On one hand, they have a fair selection of corsets and lingerie, as well as some pretty nice pieces of leather fetish wear (a pony play mask, proudly displayed, is impressive). My friend and I spent a busy day yesterday looking for corsets, and finally we ended up at Hubba Hubba. I used to live in San Francisco and Hubba Hubba kind of reminds me (favourably) of a store there called Daljeets, except it's a little smaller. Hubba Hubba is an all-around clothing/fetish gear/sex toy shop with a small selection of footwear as well. Because of the store's small size, selection is occasionally limited, but we were still able to find almost everything we wanted. As people have noted in the comments, it looks like a great place to find belts. The staff was friendly and helpful. A sales girl helped measure me for my corset--since I'd grown a little and wasn't 100 percent sure what my bra size was. She picked out the exact right size, and the first corset I tried on was a perfect match. Inexpensive too. My friend was able to find a corset in short order as well. There's some more corsets I want to try on later, but I'll have to wait til they come in with my size. Anyway, I found the shop comfortable and fun, although if I need sex toys, I'll still probably haunt the incomparable Good Vibrations. For inexpensive corsets, Hubba Hubba hit the spot. read more

She was selling sex, fetish, punk, leather and toys before anyone else in the greater Boston area. 25 years ago I bought my first pair of Dr Marten boots here. (Oh. This was way before they were common place or mass marketed). This was the only place to buy them outside of a handful of West coast shops or NY's east village. Hubba Hubba is a landmark. I walked in after walking past for three years, and I'm glad I finally mustered up the courage to try this place out. There were two ladies working that day, and only two or three other customers poking about. The first thing that caught my eye was the huge selection of corsets. They are affordable and ordered by size (waist size - 4 inches is the size you should get your corset in, they quickly informed me). I had never worn one before, so they helped me get measured and pick a few out for size. I also got laced in by them, and they were super sweet in helping me pick some out that looked nice. I left with two corsets for less than $100, which is stellar. Granted, one of them was less boned and more entry level, but the second was thickly boned satin with strong laces and an industrial zipper. Gorgeous! Made me feel like a badass for a little while. Beyond the lovely staff and the affordable corsets, there is a decent selection of toys, shoes, clothing, and so on here. I poked around a bit, but didn't get anything else since I didn't need it. Fun stuff to look at though! I'll definitely come back when I would like to pick up some more corsets or want to poke around in a brick and mortar shop instead of on the internet. The only reason this creaky antique gets even one star is because of the one gentlemen on the staff there who was eager to help and make sure we left satisfied with our shopping experience. My wife & I have been to many fetish shops, and we had heard about this one for a long time, its legendary reputation and all. Well lo and behold! We walk in and, I swear, it looks like the place hasn't updated their inventory for about 10 years. There were musty, dusty leather pieces sitting on the racks, horribly outdated fashions, and no air-conditioning. There were three people on staff that day; two of them looked like they were more concerned with gossiping amongst themselves, couldn't be bothered to help a couple of lowly little commoners like us who drove all the way from CT to visit. There was this one fellow though, who went out of his way to take us around the store, engage in conversation with us, and meticulously help out my wife with every aspect of the outfit she wanted to put together for the event we were attending. We weren't happy with most of the available choices and only left with a couple of pieces, but it was his attentiveness and positive attitude that earned this place any stars. Advice to anyone going here, if you want quality, up-to-the-minute product for your bdsm/goth/fetish needs, AVOID THIS PLACE. So I used to shop at their older location and I always felt it was a bit creepy. It was located in a not-so-nice part of town and I always felt weird walking by the area. But now, with the new location, I don't feel that way at all! It's a bigger space and they very much cleaned up their inventory. All the items are organized clearly and the store is a lot more welcoming. It's also in a very nice part of town that isn't too crowded (considering it's proximity to Harvard Sq.) but also doesn't feel as grungy as the old place. The woman who helped me (Rain/Rein?) was super friendly and I asked a bunch of annoying questions which she answered with ease. I've also been looking for an item for a while and she wrote down my contact information in case she was able to find it. I went for one item and ended up spending $80 on some cool new stuff. It is expensive but it's high quality stuff, plus I got to ask questions before actually making the purchase. The only issue I have is the lack of parking. :) read more
