This business doesn't even feel like a real establishment. Is there an owner? Manager? Do these employees receive any kind of training at all? The food, which used to be halfway decent, is now absolutely terrible. The service is young, undertrained staff. The wait is always too long and the whole place looks like it needs to be cleaned. Where do I begin. I had my wedding weekend at Hotel Sutter 06/17/17. To be clear - had my rehearsal dinner there Friday and my entire wedding party, parents, etc stayed at the hotel, we rented it out entirely. The planning process and getting a hold of the hotel in general is a pain. The staff was rude and dismissive. However, it was the only hotel and restaurant in the area near my venue. First Katherine was our event manager and then it was Bryan. Apparently the hotel staff and management has undergone some major and terrible new staffing problems. Checking into the hotel for my guests was a disaster - both my in laws had their cards hacked three times since our stay and it all leads back to the hotel. The rehearsal dinner was the worst part. We paid for three hours with a private bartender and my guests ended up pouring their own drinks since there was no bartender to be found. There was supposed to be a set up system for our slideshow in their banquet room - there was not. They had to go buy cords the day of and it ended up taking forever to get it to play. My mother in law, who had paid for the entire evening, was near tears and besides herself. The salad was awful - and then AN HOUR AND A HALF later we got our COLD food. Dessert also came out way late. The appetizers were FROZEN raviolis. We ended up filling up on the kids meal mac and cheese. All in all - it was embarrassing and downright unacceptable. I left my weekend there not even able to look at the staff in the eye. The front desk people are rude and undertrained. It was a disaster to say the very least. Where do I begin? Went to lunch with three friends. Had great hopes, the hotel is charming as is the dining room. Not a lot of lunch options in Sutter Crk other than casual fare, pizza etc. We were on a time constraint but we had an hour. We ordered two "prime rib dips", one entree salad called a Country Salad and one veggie sandwich. We ordered the beef as rare as they could make it. My friend ordered Swiss cheese as well as the mushrooms and onions. I asked for no cheese. Then we waited and waited and waited......... The food finally came after 40/45 mins. The beef was not only cooked to death but dry and it tasted old. And of course I got cheese on mine. The sweet pot. fries were tepid ( I'm sure these were frozen, but they were tasty) the roll was quite nice too and very fresh. The entree salad was mostly Arugula, mostly very old yellow arugula. There were a few interesting additions like dried figs and roasted grapes but when you put any ingredient on a bed of nasty old greens it's not acceptable! And it was $15! The "prime rib" was $15 too. The veg sandwich was just okay. The eggplant was still raw in the middle and it was served on barely toasted whole wheat sliced bread that they probably use for toast for breakfast. Very poor. I can't believe a decent cook, let alone a chef would allow food like that to be served to their guests. We had a wonderful meal here shorty after they opened and it was fabulous.. what happened? Someone needs to be in charge of the quality of the food before leaves the kitchen. No, we didn't complain because we were short on time and it's awkward when you're with a group of friends and they choose the restaurant. But I can't let this go without letting the restaurant know. It's just not that hard to find fresh ingredients in California. I'm giving it two stars, one for the ambiance and one for our nice waiter. read more

Note: This review was written 3 years ago and I just found it on my computer. I want to post it now because I had forgotten how much I did not appreciate my stay here. If management is different than please, disregard this review but if this hotel is still managed by the same people - then I do not recommend this place. My wedding guests stayed at this hotel for my June 2014 wedding. My guests and I booked at least 25 nights over 2 days, so we had majority of the hotel. We also held our rehearsal dinner here. When I arrived, I was not given a warm greeting, no "Congratulations on your wedding! Thank you for staying us this weekend." NOTHING. In fact, the manager, who I had had numerous back and forths with by phone and email, simply stared blankly at me, no smile, absolutely no warm acknowledgement. That one moment has marred my impression of this establishment. I even said, "Oh, I have the big wedding party" thinking perhaps they didn't recognize my name. Nope, still nothing. Just a "Ok here's your room key, regular plain old guest who didn't bring us a ton of business this weekend." I was not expecting the red carpet to be rolled out but it was my wedding weekend and I was excited for a little extra TLC, a small bit of acknowledgement such as, "Oh, YOU'RE the bride! Congratulations!" Do not stay here if you consider your wedding to be a special event because you will not be treated accordingly. The front desk receptionist Megan and the rest of the staff do deserve high marks, however, I am less than pleased with the management. I also received a rather rude email from Caroline stating I was unreachable by phone and email regarding the details on the rehearsal dinner when I was never the one planning it, it was an event completely planned by my mother in law. I would suggest the managers comb through their email conversations and notes before attacking a bride who has a million other things to attend to. I will admit I did ask for the rehearsal dinner menu option in the beginning but never again did I mention it with Caroline or Wendy in subsequent emails. While they did a fine job of renovating the hotel, they did take away the charm and history it used to hold. The shuttle option we arranged was convenient for my guests and was the #1 reason we chose that hotel. The A/C didn't work in my room and the elevator wasn't certified to operate yet so my elderly grandmothers still had to walk up the flight of stairs. The ice machine is gross and has some sick bucket with mold underneath it collecting water droplets. They cut costs by providing shampoo/body wash in a dispenser in the shower allowing anyone to put who knows what inside the containers. The free breakfast on the balcony is delicious. The rehearsal dinner food was also amazing. Even the desserts are scrumptious. My guests and I also enjoyed the Cellar downstairs which had music and drinks. Again, I want to commend the staff, especially Megan at the front desk, for all of their hard work and attentiveness. My distaste is for the managers and I will never do business with them or recommend this place to anyone. read more

Went for lunch on a Monday afternoon with friends. The menu was very small and the server was awful. She kept leaving for long periods of time and we kept saying, "Is she back there preparing the food too?" Well, what WAS our favorite restaurant in Amador is now questionable all together. I had heard they had undergone "new" management and apparently a new chef. We decided to give it try considering how much we loved it before. I figured it could only get better Surprise! We absolutely looooove the cheese board there. I have sent so many friends to visit this adorable town and highly recommended Sutter Creek for lunch and dinner. That won't happen after my experience yesterday! Attended a fun event Ladies Night Out hosted by many merchants in Sutter Creek. Although Sutter Creek Hotel was not one of them, it's a Must Stop fir me when I'm in town. Because we wanted to eat fairly quickly, we opted to sit at the bar. We order drinks then asked for menu's. I knew exactly what I was having, the backed Mac and Cheese. My friend asked the bartender if the Shrimp was fresh in the Shrimp Louie Salad. She was told yes, so that completed our order. Food arrived and my first taste of Mac & Cheese, was what you get out of a box. I was shocked and asked if the Chef was new, she said no but asked if I wanted something else. Knowing we had no time, I told her let me give it a couple more bites then went about her business. My friend took one bite of her salad and said "this is not fresh Shrimp". In fact her second bite was a shrimp ice cold, as in still thawing out. I bartender was super young, sweet but young and maybe didn't understand. I took two additional bites of my Mac and Cheese which continued to taste like powdered cheese. I told my friend that I will pack it up and give to my son. He will still love it. My friend said frozen shrimp on a bed of ice berg lettuce is not what she expected. I was embarrassed as it was first time there. She definitely will not go back. The bartender came over and asked "are you ladies done". I said yes we are and without asking if we wanted to take home, clearly seeing we didn't eat it, or allowing me time to say "I will take the Mac and Cheese to go".....she quickly stacked them and was on the counter for the garbage. OMG. My son was thankful, he said that he would not have eaten it either. Sorry, Hotel Sutter we used to be your biggest fan but no longer. We went here for New Years when they had just recently opened under new management. We were really impressed with the food and the remodel. Flash forward to March of this year, we started looking at wedding venues in the area and immediately thought about reserving some or all of the rooms here. We toured the rooms and were told about the third floor remodels, we were thrilled. In May we booked a local venue and my soon to be mother in law called and talked to the event coordinator and told her we definitely wanted to reserve 10 rooms and we wanted to have our rehearsal dinner there. I then went down there on May 23 to give them a deposit check and tell them that we actually want ALL the rooms for TWO nights. Low and behold they had no record of the 10 room hold. They also would not take my check that day because the event coordinator wasn't there and because we were more than a year out so they couldn't put a reservation in the system yet. They promised that the event coordinator would call in a few days to finalize everything. Well she never called and after repeated calls and emails over a three week period my mother in law drove down there and while the event coordinator wasn't there(again) she finally got an information packet emailed to her. When she called to finalize details and finally put a hold on all the rooms she was informed by the owner that someone "just" squeezed in right in front of us and booked the whole place and the banquet room for a rehearsal dinner. The owner offered to "accommodate" our rehearsal dinner on the balcony. Um no. How can someone squeeze in before us when we have been trying to give you a check for a month! In the end I think this is a blessing is disguise. The food and service has been getting progressively worse every time we have gone here(as the reviews reflect) and given how quickly businesses go in and out of business in this area I have a feeling that this place may not still be around in a year. The last thing I need is to try to scramble for lodging at the last minute before for our wedding. read more

We were at the restaurant for my Mom's 89th Birthday and were disappointed with the food. We had to ask for extra dressing for our salad, the vegetables were seriously undercooked and the lamb shank was not as tender as you would normally expect a lamb shank to be. The biggest disappointment was the result of them doing nothing for the birthday celebration. When I made the reservation I advised it was a birthday, when we arrived I reminded the hostess that we were celebrating a birthday and we also told our waitress. My wife and I have stayed in this little town several times. We love the ambiance of the hotel. The bar is great. Drinks are inexpensive. Rooms are clean. The only downside is the rudeness of the receptionist at the front desk in the early morning. I should comment they requested a $100 deposit on top of preparing for the room site unseen. But when we checked out they would not refund the deposit and said later after we left if nothing was wrong with the room they would return the deposit. .After requesting the manager, the morning attendant decided to check the room and refunded our deposit. And I don't want to leave out the cellar downstairs all they're super cute plush chairs the Ambiance down there is great the bartenders down there were fantastic we love Kimberly she knew her drinks and was a fantastic server thank you thank you thank you Hotel Sutter! read more

Charming location. Exposed brick walls and high ceiling with fans. The menu was nice but our server was so amateurish it was almost embarrassing. He told us one wine we asked about was made there (not!) and was under 21 so had no idea about any wines. Kept telling us what other people liked which wasn't our question. He also didn't know the menu at all. He kept having to go to the kitchen to ask questions. When we told him that my husband's $31 steak was over cooked (he asked for medium rare and got medium well) he said he would tell the kitchen. Nothing else, including no offer of a dessert on the house or anything. My salmon was good but I found the prices a little to San Francisco-ish for the Gold country. Lunch or a drink at the bar might be worth it, but this was not worth the price. read more

We used this hotel as a recommendation for our wedding guests (getting married at a vineyard nearby). We booked everything a year in advance; reserved the banquet room for our rehearsal dinner and saved the hotel reservations for our guests. They even offer a shuttle to and from the event. We had one snafu about 2 months before the event: tried to arrange for the start time for our rehearsal dinner - got a call from management stating that they had no record of our reservation; they had booked the banquet room to another party; and could offer us a room that sat 20 (we needed a room for 40-50). Needless to say, we were rather distraught; didn't really know what to do; and I left it to my fiance (at the time) to figure it out. He found out that the hotel was changing owners; the woman we had set everything up with had left for medical/personal reasons; and they were going to try and make things right for us. (there were no issues with our guests' reservations or the shuttle service) Bill, the new manager, worked hand in hand with my fiance to make things right. He eventually got us the banquet room we booked; set up our dinner; and held up all the agreements that we had made in the beginning. The rehearsal dinner ended up better than we could have hoped for. The banquet hall had been remodeled, and was a million times nicer than when we had booked originally. The food was amazing - we had only ate at the restaurant once before, but the buffet the set up for us was delicious - we were worried that our actual wedding food would not hold up! All of our guests liked their rooms. The shuttle service to and from our wedding allowed everyone to thoroughly enjoy themselves and stay safe. We would do it again in a heartbeat! Forget Napa, get a room at this funky downtown hotel and tour the fabulous Shanandoa Trail 6 miles away. It's absolutely beautiful and the wines 1st class., Then, dinner at the Sutter will top off your day in style. We had the spiced mussels and a ceasar to start and they were perfection; the Lamb shank was fall of the bone tender, juicy and delicious and the salmon was perfect. The staff is young but they are enthusiastic. The hotel is vibrant and feels happy, If service doesn't seem perfect then you are being too uptight. Late night there is always a good time down in the Cellar Bar. The quieter rooms would be away from the street or the 3rd floor. We will be back, and we'll bring friends. read more

We purchased a Groupon and upgraded to a queen-size bed. As all the reviews have mentioned, this is a very old hotel with tiny rooms. However, it has lots of charm. We couldn't find parking along the back of the hotel, so we ended up parking on the street a couple blocks away. When we entered the hotel, we were met by Geno, who was very friendly and took great care of us. We took a short nap in the room after winetasting and forgot to check what time the hotel restaurant closes. When we walked to the hotel restaurant at 8 PM they were no longer serving dinner on Wednesday night. That was no problem at all, because we saw great yelp reviews for gold dust pizza across the street. The pizza place will definitely get five stars from us in a separate yelp review. But now back to the hotel. The queen size room has a bed, two nightstands, a chair, and a small table that holds a Keurig machine and a couple cups. The floors are not even and the pigeons have taken over the roof. On the plus side, the television had DirecTV channels and the shower was remodeled with plenty of hot water. In the morning, on the first floor, there was a very nice assortment of coffees, mighty leaf tea, oatmeal packs, hot chocolate packs, apple turnovers and berry turnovers that were complementary. Across the street, there is a fabulous coffee house called choco latte that we highly recommend. This hotel is in a great location for walking around downtown Suttercreek. The Groupon deal was a great value, but I would consider paying a little more for a king room next time. The ladies who checked us out of our room in the morning were very friendly as well and we had no trouble at all with our bill. They put $100 deposit on your card when you check in, but they remove the hundred dollars when you check out. Check out all the great festivals in Suttercreek, Plymouth, and Amador City. Had dinner there on a Sunday evening. The appetizer crab cakes and the main dishes Salmon and Scampi were good. The server did not suggest anything such as a special or best dishes which is normally what you get at a restaurant. We should have probably skipped dessert, but it is rare that I get a chance to have cherry pie. a. It was burnt charred over half the pie which I could not eat. b. It was served with Mint Chip Ice Cream. This is not a flavor that goes with Cherry pie. c. The server should have looked at the pie and refused not served it and provided me with alternatives. d. I should have been given a choice of ice creams that would go with Cherry pie and if they didn't have any another option prior to ordering it. I have to agree with another review, servers and front house need to be trained better and kitchen staff need to have quality in mind. Would they eat a totally burnt pie that the crust wasn't even flakey but hard as a rock? Last hopefully the owner will see this review, my credit card number was stolen at the restaurant as well. I would not recommend this as a quality place to eat if you are trying to compare their food to Taste or Union Inn. They do not meet that standard. read more

We had a wedding here on January 19 and it was everything we could have hoped for. The wedding was small, which allowed us to use the banquet room for the ceremony and dinner. The room provides a beautiful setting, the food was great, and the staff was excellent (special thanks to Kaylee for the excellent/attentive service during the event). Hotel Sutter was very accommodating to our needs and how we wanted the room set up. Our guests stayed at the hotel, which was super convenient. Our dinner was family-style, the food was delicious and the prices for the meal and room rental were extremely reasonable. Would highly recommend the Hotel Sutter for events. I could go on and on about how much I love Hotel Sutter. It is such a beautiful and comfortable setting. The renovations over the last year are astounding. They've brought such a refinement to the building while maintaining the sense of history surrounding the area. Everything from the new lobby bar to the new rooms are classy without being pretentious. I'm instantly comfortable there. The staff aren't only professional and courteous, but warm, delightful and ever so helpful. Even when making last minute requests, they were more than happy to oblige and made it seem effortless. They've got a great bar staff and the bloody marys are to die for! Darius and the kitchen staff prepared delicious food all weekend long. From the mussels to the short ribs, I could have indulged in a food coma the entire time we were there. Not only will Hotel Sutter remain a substantial part of our wedding memories, it will forever be our weekend-getaway spot! Holy crap you guys, I submitted a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and GM Thom's response was essentially that I lied about the whole thing, dude has zero shame. He said I lied about the amount that we were charged, which, I'm not sure if he knows how the internet works but when you book hotels you get an e-mail receipt with the amount in it. He said the cleaning staff wouldn't let blood slip by them so my eyes are liars too. He said a diaper couldn't have gotten into their rollout bed implying that I travel with diapers in a diabolical scheme to book rooms that have sewage smells and broken remotes in them so I'll get moved to a room with a rollout bed so I can plant a diaper in it so that I can pretend to be super patient and get offered a refund I didn't ask for which then gets reduced to a free night's stay which is then reduced to partial credit for a night's stay at which point my whole plan will come together and I will finally. get. upset. Dude. Seriously. If your business mistreats people and your response is that they're liars for calling you on it, you're not just a bad businessperson, your moral compass is broken. read more

Thumbs up to the friendly staff in the restaurant. Though they are on the younger side they have been trained well and are polite and attentive. Our servers for dinner were helpful in choosing our entree's and suggestions. I would encourage one or two on the staff be trained in wine selections since it is a destination for those who enjoy wine tasting! Our server for breakfast also went out of his way to assure a positive experience! The 4 star vs. 5 is staff in other areas of the hotel need training in customer service. This hotel was such a disappointment. We booked 2 nights stayed there for a wedding and the room was smelly and the bed was uncomfortable AND the air conditioning unit made a buzzing noise every 1.5 minutes all night long. The manager and staff were not empathetic at all. We had to demand 1 night credit after they fixed the unit. The staff couldn't careless they did have a cute bar upstairs and downstairs however the bartender was not experienced enough to make a decent cocktail. Not doing that again. read more

Was very surprised to see how updated the restaurant and bar were when we walked in. The hotel is very nice and EXTREMELY quiet. The room was small but well appointed. The bathroom is large and nice as well. We ate dinner at the restaurant. Shelby was our server. SHE WAS THE BEST! She spoke clearly and loud enough for me over the bustling Friday night crowd. I'm a little hard of hearing, and she was a very welcome change from my norm. Our delicious dinner came out extremely fast!! Hotel Sutter is absolutely fabulous! We rented out the entire Hotel for our wedding night, had a pop-up omelet bar the morning of our wedding on the upstairs patio, and also rented the banquet hall for our rehearsal dinner. With this package we got transportation free from their shuttle so we were able to transport our guests to/from the wedding as an added bonus. Our guests loved the bars (especially cellar bar and karaoke), delicious food, and general accommodations from the hotel. Rebecca and Taylor were so helpful in putting all of these pieces together and I couldn't be more grateful. I recently stayed here for my friends' wedding. The rooms were very clean and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The prices for rooms were reasonable. I stayed in a good size room with a queen size bed. Everything here is very quaint and the town is amazing. The bathrooms were spotless and had very high quality sinks and showers, which was great. The restaurant and bar (The Cellar) had reasonably priced food and drinks. Everything was of excellent quality. I would definitely come here again as I had a great experience. Came back again this year for WineFest. Had great time again and stayed at Hotel Sutter. Wow these guys are piling a lot of money into this property. Rooms now all have bathrooms which kept my wife happy. They have opened up the bar area and the restaurant to the street with big fold back doors so the place feels really big and airy. Food in the restaurant was as good as last time if not better. Our table had the pork chop, rib eye and chicken with everyone liking all of their meals. Great wine list with very very affordable local wines. This place just gets better by the year. read more

First time staying at the hotel, but Deserae at the bar is awesome. Great bartender and great attitude. Definitely will come here again.

Okay so the $15 Bleu Cheese Wedge Salads on the menu? WORTH EVERY SINGLE PENNY. In town for the weekend, me and my hubby came back both nights just for this salad. It was screaming good. read more
