Was texted multiple times as to when we were arriving. Website says they're open till 6:30pm and we arrived @ 5pm to a locked and empty lobby with our key taped to the window. The 2 remotes provided for the TV that's smaller than what I have in my garage couldn't summon the Sunday Night Football game. Was so disappointed to be charged premium rates for cut rate accommodations we left our room 30 minutes later with the key on the empty desk in the lobby. Won't be back, won't recommend to any of my family or clients. Paid $300 for a room I didn't even spend an hour of my day in. Disaster !!! read more

Booked a Cottage here for a quick Mother/Daughter getaway weekend. We'd never visited Sutter Creek but had heard great things. We booked Cottage #1 for one night and it was nice. Furnishings were modern and comfortable. And I loved the fresh warm scones that get delivered in the mornings to your door step. Only issue is they don't stay to warm when it's freezing outside like it was during our stay. We also got breakfast with our stay and that too is delivered to your door with plastic wrap over it. This was pretty lack luster in my opinion. We got the Avocado Toast and Yogurt with berries and granola. It held us over till lunch but wasn't especially memorable. I found the "closet/coffee bar" to be odd. I hung my clothes up and they covered the coffee maker. Odd concept. But the bathroom was nice and the shower/tub was HUGE. They even have nice robes to wear. From what I've heard, this is the nicest hotel this tiny town has to offer however I was a little taken back that the cottage was over $300 a night! Rooms in San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma run about this price so I was kinda surprised that this little town was charging so much. Although it was a holiday weekend so maybe that's part of it. Customer service was great. I loved that they have wine time after check in and the guy was nice enough to refill my glass. Bonus points! Over all I would stay here again but I think I'd try to book earlier to see if we can get a room inside the hotel instead of a cottage. The town is ADORABLE so we'll be back. read more

We truly loved our stay at Hanford House in Sutter Creek. It was a beautiful experience. The downtown area is within walking distance which makes for a very pleasant stay. We could have a little wine, then walk to have dinner. Great restaurants and shopping a few feet away. The room was gorgeous and had a cute little balcony, heated bathroom floors, most comfortable bed, loved the pillows, delicious fresh warm scones delivered to our door at 7 am, along with a coffee/tea bar located upstairs close to our room. The staff was awesome, very friendly and welcoming. You get to order breakfast upon check in--which I might add, was presented in a perfect manner. Stayed at Hanford House in June of 2025. Loved the room ,But was disappointed as it is advertised as bed and breakfast. What they don't say is that breakfast isn't included Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Also there aren't refrigerators in the downstair rooms. If you need a refrigerator you have to stay upstairs but there is no elevator. The staff is very friendly but I was disappointed in the misleading "Bed and Breakfast" advertising. read more

When you buy a business you buy its debt (in this case, outstanding gift certificates). They will not honor it - even mid week. My husband and I stayed at every hotel in Sutter Creek multiple times in preparation for our wedding that just happened in June 2023. We stayed at Hanford House, The Inn at 161, Hotel Sutter, Sutter Creek Inn, and Kyoto Inn. We had such a lovely time at every place hat we had a tough time choosing! But we ultimately chose Hanford House for our wedding weekend even though they were BY FAR the most expensive - but what a mistake that was!! I think some kind of real estate corporation (or something like that, not fully sure of the details) bought Hanford House and let me tell you - things have changed! Previously it was this lovely upscale / modern hotel with fantastic amenities and thoughtful, quaint touches. A lot of the wonderful things that set it apart were completely rolled back. A few of the of the problems include: - The morning scones are now disgusting. Did they change bakers as a cost reduction measure? - We were never offered any cookies during our wedding stay, when previously that was a sweet little perk. - The Penthouse Suite has a weird sign telling you "not to splash water out of the tub because it will leak into the lobby" - that's a sign / flaw you would expect at a budget motel. - The "hot" and "cold" labels are upside down/reversed in the Penthouse shower. - Nobody was keeping track of the cars using the parking lot, so it was 100% full the entire time we were there and we witnessed multiple people parking there who WEREN'T staying at the hotel. When you are carting tote bins full of stuff + your wedding dress to stay in the most expensive luxury suite, it's really a pain to carry and drag all of that up a hill from an alley because nobody is making sure that actual guests have spots. E.g. nobody ever asked for our license plate number. - The cost of a room service full daily breakfast was included in our reservation price, but they got rid of that without notifying us prior. - The Element breakfast menu has changed in weird ways. They got rid of some delicious classics and now they have off-the-cuff things like French toast coated in some type of children's cereal. That really feels like a corporate attempt to appeal to millennials. - I tripped on the ledge walking into The Penthouse Suite and fell, because I was carrying luggage and there's no eye-level warning of it. - My mom's room on the first floor didn't have a sign indicating the WIFI password and she didn't have cell service, so she had a terrible and confusing first night. - Both my mom and my room received the "welcome" text message AFTER we checked out. I suspect that their autoresponder is configured improperly. - Housekeeping tried to walk in while we were naked because there was no "do not disturb" sign available. - The furniture (bed, couch, desk chair) was all very uncomfortable. I wasn't planning to write a review for them personally and was just planning to stay at a different hotel when we come back to Sutter Creek, except one of the Managing Partners reached out to my husband and the most unpleasant, awkward conversation ensued! I don't think that person has the customer service skills to interface with the public. She displayed no sympathy and offered a non-apology for the poor experience. When he told her about how we planned our wedding day schedule around having room service, she told him that they had to remove it because opening the restaurant creates jobs and that other people enjoyed the restaurant. What does the two points she made have to do with removing a service that was included when we made the reservation and had utilized the prior two stays? Of course we want people in Sutter Creek to have jobs and we were very happy to see that the restaurant opened, but many people also travel here to have a wedding at the incredibly popular venues here, so removing services without notifying people with existing reservations is wrong. If a policy is changed, that service should be upheld for people who paid for reservations prior to the change. Or at the very least, the guests should be notified in advance so they can make alternate plans. I suspect that Hanford House intentionally chose not to notify guests of the change because other hotels in Sutter Creek do still offer room service and/or breakfast, so guests might cancel and go to another place instead. Finally, the Managing Partner asked my husband to remove his Google review in exchange for a bigger refund. We don't want a refund - we want other people to have good experiences, especially on their wedding weekend! We were so displeased and uncomfortable that, despite being tired from the wedding, we packed up and left to go home as soon as we could. That really says something when our plan had been to relax in honeymoon bliss at our former favorite hotel. I am now sad to say that I look forward to staying somewhere else during our upcoming trip to Sutter Creek next month. read more

Cancel that expectation of frills and lace and foo-foo rooms decorated with flowers, stuffed animals, and odd mismatched antique furniture. Unless your granny is a hip modern urban dweller this is nothing like staying at your grandmother's house. The lovely old building on the north end of downtown hints a bit of what lies inside. The entire interior has been completely remodeled into a sleek chic urban space. The soaring lobby is decorated with mid-century furnishings and magnificent wood and metal architectural details. Pieces of old furniture and repurposed doors blend with the ultra-modern decor. Our room was clean, comfortable and very quiet. The amenities were upscale - fluffy towels, soft linens, numerous large pillows, in-room fridge, fireplace, air conditioner, fabulous rainforest shower, and a HEATED bathroom floor. The decor matched the eclectic style of the lobby. The repurposed doors for the headboard and shelves was a lovely contrast to the metal table and bathroom counter and the clean modern lines of the room. Our room came with a small balcony with cafe table and chairs - the perfect spot for sipping a glass of wine. Wine screw and wine glasses are provided. Chocolates on the pillow and a journal for entering your thoughts was a nice carry-over from B&B tradition. Fresh scones delivered to your​ door in the morning, hot coffee in the hall and a glass of wine in the lobby all are those little touches that make the whole stay special. Breakfast at Elements is included, but we did not partake as we had a previously planned breakfast engagement. Check-in and check-out were seamless, the host was cordial and professional. We are looking forward to a return visit to Sutter Creek. The Hanford House Inn will be our lodging of choice. read more

As my wife and I become more "seasoned", our approach to celebrating our birthdays have changed. Our twenties consisted of having one main objective, getting so inebriated that we could not remember anything past the first hour of celebrating. Now that we are in our thirties, our main objectives are to unwind, recover, and celebrate in peace (and actually remember how we celebrated). With that in mind, we began to explore wine tasting as a means of celebrating my wife's 32nd birthday. For past celebrations we have done wine tasting in Napa, Sonoma (one of our favorite destinations), and Lodi (twenty minutes from home). However, we wanted to explore somewhere new, distant from our home but not too far, and an environment that would offer a personable wine tasting experience. My ever so resourceful wife took upon the task of researching a couple of options. The option that we would eventually settle on would be a Bed & Breakfast in Sutter's Creek. After an hour-long drive from Sacramento, we arrived at our bed & breakfast destination...Hanford House Inn. We were immediately greeted by an employee who was anxiously awaiting our arrival (she greeted us by name), gave us a tour of our room, handed over the keys, poured us glasses of wine (it was the "wine hour"), and provided us with her personal list of favorite local wineries. After bringing our luggage's up to our room, we (along with another couple) headed to a winery literally next door (Scott Harvey) for some Thursday evening wine tasting! After wine tasting, we moved our celebration to a bar/restaurant called Cavana's Pub and Grub (delicious), and eventually made our way back to our room. To say our room (Room #1), was amazing would be an understatement. Honestly, if it were not for the nearby wineries, we could have easily spent our three days and two nights in our room. The room had a large bathtub (with jets) surrounded by heated floors (am I the only super intrigued by floors that have temperature control?). Placed directly in front of the bathtub was an electric see thru fireplace. If making a baby was on our current agenda, this was definitely the setting to accomplish that action item! We woke up the next morning to a light tap on the door, followed by the lovely aroma of freshly brewed coffee. When I opened the door, I was greeted by some freshly made scones and noticed that a fresh batch of coffee had been brewed in the beverage area across the hall from our room. After enjoying some leisure time, we headed over to Element Kitchen and Drinks for some scrumptious breakfast (Hanford House provided us each with complimentary breakfast cards for use at Element Kitchen and Drinks). After finishing breakfast, we headed to Sera Fina Cellars to kick off our wine tasting extravaganza (one of seven wineries we would explore that day). My wife and I had an amazing time in Sutter Creek; it was the perfect romantic getaway! Being that we arrived on a weekday (Thursday evening), the wineries were slow and were able to provide us with a personable experience (we almost felt like those celebrities who shut down venues for privacy). In addition, something to consider is that all of the wineries are within walking distance from Hanford House Inn. Therefore, you can get as intoxicated as you desire and crawl yourself safely back to your cozy room (which is a benefit since Lyft and Uber drivers are scarce in the Sutter Creek area). So you want to know if we will return?...the answer is YES! This was the first time in a long time that my wife and I successfully pulled off a romantic and relaxing getaway. Aside from wanting to experience the five wineries that we were unable to visit, we would love to spend a couple nights in Room #1 (I love how taboo that sounds )! My husband and I stayed here two nights for our anniversary. It was our first time here and we will definitely be back. I picked the room with the private hot tub, it was amazing. The deck was huge. We sat out there and enjoyed our breakfast that was delivered each morning(came with the room) Food was amazing and the scones delivered at 7:30 AM was such a great way to start the day with a cup of coffee. Then we had breakfast delivered at 9:30 AM. Bed was cozy, heated floors in the bathroom were a nice treat. Shower was huge and my husband enjoyed taking a bath in the claw foot tub. It was really quiet and the hotel staff couldn't be anymore pleasant and kind. The hotel cat joined us everyday and stayed for a long time. It was a nice getaway and especially during Covid which has been hard, this trip made us a little more refreshed. read more

We lucked out and got two rooms here for an overnight for two couple. The restaurant was closed, but the host opened up the room for us to use for a glass of wine before we went to the local theater. Special note: one of our party was mildly handicapped, and the host did everything possible to make access easy and make us all welcome. The rooms were spacious, spotlessly clean, and modern in design. Everything in the room and Inn worked. The bed was very comfortable, good light for reading and everything we needed for comfort in the bath and room. A freshly cooked breakfast (and warm scones) was delivered to the room precisely on time. The location is an easy walk to Main Street, with plenty of places to eat, but not subject to much street noise. The photos do not show how modern and clean the rooms and lobby were, nor how helpful the young staff was. read more

My husband and I recently stayed at Hanford House to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had an amazing time! The cottage was spotless and comfortable. Complimentary scones were brought to our room in the morning which were delicious. We dined at Element for dinner and absolutely loved the food and delicious cocktails. It is located close enough to Main St to walk to all the shops and tasting rooms. The best part though was the customer service! My husband and I completely misunderstood the complimentary breakfast instruction which in turn could have prevented us from enjoying breakfast but rather than allowing us to just check out and miss breakfast (again, it was our misunderstanding) they went out of their way to make sure we were provided with the amazing breakfast we had selected upon check in. I was so pleasantly surprised by the "above and beyond" attitude and graciousness they showed to us. It certainly made our anniversary that much more enjoyable at the Hanford House. We have already started planning our next trip back and hope to bring family and friends with us to enjoy this little piece of paradise perfectly situated in beautiful downtown Sutter Creek!! read more

Sarah at the front desk was so friendly and knowledgeable about the area. I could have stayed and had coffee with her as she felt like an old friend after 5 minutes chatting with her. We had complimentary wine and homemade cookies in the evening and our morning started with fresh scones delivered to our room at 7:00. Unfortunately not much was open as we came right when phase 2 started but that's okay as our room was amazing and I didnt mind not leaving it anyways. We stayed in cottage 2. The heated bathroom floors were a nice touch and the jacuzzi tub was excellent being 7 months pregnant. We left our window cracked one night and William (the hotel cat) decided he wanted to get away from the rain and crawled in. We didnt mind, hes very friendly. I cant wait to come back! read more

This place is very unique. There's places to stay in the actual hotel - nice and small and modern then there are cottages. One of which i stayed in- #4. Its towards the back with a very nice and big patio with spa and table to sit on! Very nice grounds, every thing is updated and modern. Reminds me more of a napa hotel area. Bathroom is huge with both shower and are separate. Was greeted very nicely by Paul. Showed my daughter and I around and how to adjust anything needed. When i arrived in my room my fireplace was going and the spa was on and ready. We will continue to stay here when we visit! We chose to stay at the Hanford House for a recent getaway to wine country! We were sold on it by the premise of hot scones delivered to our hotel room door each morning, and it's charming location in Sutter Creek. And we were not disappointed! We chose to get a more basic room and it was anything but basic. The room itself was HUGE and we had our own patio with charming outdoor furniture. Though it was a super hot couple of days, it cooled down in the evening and we loved getting to enjoy that outdoor area. We also LOVED getting wine in the evenings from the front desk, and a super tasty breakfast at the adjacent restaurant on site. I went for All Sutter's Creek so that I could get eggs, a chicken apple sausage, and toast. I also got the granola on the side and everything was super tasty! There was a condensed menu on the Tuesday we were there because the restaurant was only open for hotel guests. All and all, the hotel was lovely and we had a great time staying there! Super disappointed. Such a bummer had a great trip to Sutter Creek a couple months back. Stayed here with my fiancé and we had a great experience. We decided to return in December 2021 to celebrate with our family. We wanted them to have the same great experience. So we booked 3 rooms and were looking forward to it. Then unexpectedly my dad passed. My fiancé calls 30 days a head of arrival date to cancel. The owner doesn't even care about our loss and charges us a $200 dollar non-refundable deposit. Explained that's the way no excuses and if I had canceled even closer to the date I would have really been charged a even large fee. "We were actually lucky to have called when we did. "Wow" I guess compassion and or sympathy is something of the past after COVID. We will now never go there again. We will suggest the Sutter Creek Hotel. I can't even tell you my disappointment with the owner. Didn't realize someone could be so Non-compassionate and just want to make money. She will undoubtedly rent the rooms prior to our arrival date. Now she not only made money off of us but will be charging another sucker the same price. Hope that works out for her. My friend and I stayed here this past weekend in the penthouse suite and we absolutely enjoyed our stay. The facilities were pristine and the staff very warm, polite, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. We've stayed there in the past many times... when Element was open. It was excellent then... the Penthouse and the other rooms we stayed in were wonderful and the staff exceptional, as were the scones, coffee and food. Now??? Staff at the desk were not any help at all. We had to go to the office for coffee, which is typical for guests in the cottages I guess but we didn't think we would have to go upstairs for coffee, downstairs for cream.... and visa versa, each day nor what to do with the breakfast tray they left at the door when we were finished with it. They gave us conflicting information about whether or not Element was open to guests only, public, not at all. Their Website was not helpful, in fact, we probably would have stayed elsewhere if we had known the true status of things. Oh, BTW, there was NO mention anywhere nor anything said about the fact that Sutter Creek and its neighboring towns pretty much close down for Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The front desk was kind of like "Oh, you know how it is, new Owner's.... The Website hasn't been updated...sorry about that." Period. No recommended alternatives for meals or places to go/see...nuttin'. Very disappointing, guys. The bright spot was the cleaning/ kitchen staff were all great!! read more

I stopped here for a business trip. My company's booming platform lists the preferred hotels per company policy for price and location, and this was top of the list. When I arrived I discovered a small inn tucked behind Element restaurant. You can tell it was a recent building renovation, and the work they did is exquisite. The staff is phenomenal. They were genuine and sweet and thoughtful. There are little treats around on every corner, cookies in the lobby, chocolates on your pillow, and fresh scones waiting outside your door when you wake. The rooms are comfortable, and possess a vintage inspired construction of reclaimed materials. Everything is pretty new. The bed was very comfortable, with a variety of pillow densities to choose from. And free breakfast at Element, one of the best and most surprising treats. I highly recommend. They make it feel special. Not just a place to sleep, but a place to relax, and feel a bit at home. read more

It's a novel new innovation in B&Bs: A Bed and Breakfast without the breakfast! Stay was 8/11 through 8/13. Be mindful that, regardless of the nightly rate being paid to stay as a guest (roughly $250), you will not be guaranteed breakfast even if you show up to their restaurant at 8:19am and they have several empty tables. At least we were told they were "so sorry". The scones that had little bits of napkin fused into the icing counts for something, I guess. My husband and I enjoy this place so much, we've stayed here a total of 3 times over the last couple of years. We've even purchased a one night stay for my in laws because we want to share want an amazing experience we have had. That was, until today. My husband purchased a stay in one of the cottages for me to have a night away on my own. I'm one exhausted mama, so you can imagine how excited I was. Everything went perfectly, until I walked over for my breakfast. Upon arrival, I was asked to pick a breakfast time. I chose 11am, so I could sleep in, check out and have breakfast before heading back home. To my memory, 11am was one of the options I was shown. I walked over and sat in the lobby around 10:40am. Everything was locked up and no one in sight. 10 minutes later, one of the innkeepers came out and asked if I needed anything. I said I was checking out arriving for my breakfast. She advised me that I had actually missed my breakfast- it was scheduled at 10am. I can be scatter brained, so there's definitely a chance I was mistaken. She then told me that the staff waited until 10:30am and tried calling me. I never received a call, and no one was around when I had walked over. I felt so stupid- and absolutely starving! I was so embarrassed. As I left she said, "I guess I could get you some granola to go?" I said no thank you and left. My husband called to ask how my getaway was, and I told him what happened. He had a good point: these rooms aren't cheap, and the price includes breakfast for two. He payed full price for two people, even though it was just me. He wasn't happy with how it was handled, so he called to talk to someone about it. He was offered a refund of $15. I suppose it's better than nothing. It's not their responsibility to remind me of when breakfast was- I totally take responsibility for getting it wrong. But for the amount of money we've spent here, I was very disappointed in how this mistake was handled. My advice for any future guests would be to make sure you get something in writing with important information on it, because your word may not be enough. read more

What a wonderful mid-week getaway we had at the Hanford House Inn. We enjoyed a stay here many years ago ... and the update makes HH truly a destination for Gold Country. Loved the sleek, "industrial" look with the touches of reused wood. The old door for the headboard added a bit of whimsy to the room. Old doors were also used for shelves in the closet. I liked that look, but would have preferred a door or curtain to complete the look. The gas fireplace was attractive and the glassware on the mantel added a colorful touch. However, a few things in the room seemed to be more "form" than "function." For one thing the mirror above the fireplace was too high to even look in. The two upholstered chairs were attractive, but were not particularly comfortable ... and an ottoman would have been a nice addition. Also missed having a chest of drawers. Due to the weather, we did not use the tiny balcony with its small metal table and two chairs. (The room map showed the balcony for room 5 being larger than it actually was.) The heated floor in the bathroom felt wonderful when stepping out of the shower. I also appreciated the Bee Kind bath products, especially the dispensers in the shower. At first I missed having towel bars, but the hooks worked fine. A box of facial tissue was about the only thing missing in the bathroom. As most other reviewers have said, the frosted scones were a nice touch in the morning. With the provided robes, it was easy to step from our room to the coffee/tea service -- and relax a bit before heading down for breakfast. The addition of Elements restaurant is a real plus for the inn. Wonderful menu with some inventive entrees for breakfast. Nice to have more options than one usually finds in a traditional B and B. We enjoyed chatting with other guests during "wine time" in the evening and enjoyed a zin from Yorba Winery both evenings. (There was a white option, too.) We found the staff to be friendly and helpful ... taking my suitcase up and down the stairs, etc. Should we return to Sutter Creek, we will definitely book a stay at HH Inn. I don't see how it could be much better. read more
