Hotel Metropole has to be my first or second favorite hotel of all time. My fiance' (now husband) and I booked 2-nights there in one of the ocean-view rooms with a balcony in April of 2004 and it was GORGEOUS. The view was simply spectacular. We could see all of Avalon. The modern beach decor in the room was great as well, right down to the shutters that opened into the bathroom to reveal a full size, deep jacuzzi tub. Heaven! The fireplace turned on with the flick of a switch, the bed was comfy, and the extra couch, chairs and table were handy. We booked a week before the spring break/summer rates kicked in. The plaza down below is great for quaint shopping and I even got my hair cut and a massage at one of the spas below. It is within walking distance of everything - no need to rent a golf cart unless you want to tour the rest of the island. It was great to walk to the restaurants nearby. If I had the chance to go back to Catalina overnight, I would stay at Hotel Met without a doubt! read more

My husband and I stayed her for one night for our first trip to Catalina. We bought a deal off of groupon and we were a bit nervous. When we arrived, we were happy. It looked nice in the lobby and the room was perfect. We even had a small balcony facing the water. Our bathroom messed up after one use so we went down to the lobby and they sent someone up quickly and got it fixed. The floors weren't carpet which is another plus for me lol the heater and AC worked which we used the electric fireplace at night. Came here on Sunday and left Tuesday. Got in early and we were able to check in early. They had free breakfast every morning that was nice. Everyone was very friendly. I did have a problem with the bathroom in my room. The rooms were $400 something but I got a discount of 35% . After paying $200 something a night and walking in your room to see the toilet and shower that looks like it's been there forever like I'm in public stall is not right. I've been in hotels that were $150 that didn't even look like that ... read more

This place (and my beau) is my hero! We got to the island yesterday and got to the place we were supposed to be staying at and there were roaches there. Lots of them. Excuse me while I flip my shit... I was NOT going to stay there. Beau sprang to action and found this AMAZING place for the evening. AMAZING!!! The lady at the front desk was awesome. The room is awesome. The place is clean and nice. Thank you Hotel Metropole, for saving my sanity. My only sad issue is that they only had one night available instead of two... My boyfriend and I stayed at Hotel Metropole for a few nights for our one year anniversary in October 2009. By the time we decided where we wanted to stay, there wasn't a ton of availability left since our anniversary happens to be the same weekend as the Catalina jazz festival. Regardless, we got one of the "deluxe" guest rooms at Hotel Metropole. On the whole, it was very comfortable. The bed was comfy, our fireplace worked, the TV and the DVD player worked, it was clean, and the staff was very friendly. The room was very cute with kind of a French country decor. The continental breakfast was a quick and easy way to start the day with a danish and a cup of coffee. We only took advantage of the hot tub one night but it's got a great view of the harbor and doesn't seem like it's highly utilized so it made for a nice quiet evening. The "Touch of Heaven" day spa didn't thrill me. We sprung for a couples massage and I have to admit...I had a really hard time not laughing through the whole thing. First, we had to wait half an hour after our allotted time slot which didn't start it off on a good foot. The decor was pretty funny with fake grapes hung around. I happened to get the female masseuse and my boyfriend got the guy. The woman was friendly enough but not on the same par as masseuses in the Bay Area. She ended by "massaging" my face which felt like she was just drawing pictures on my face with one finger tip and occasionally poking it. Needless to say, I'd probably skip that next time...but the hotel is nice. Next time we're in Catalina, I'd probably either go for the VIP suites at Hotel Metropole which look killer...or opt to go camping. But on the whole, I definitely enjoyed our stay there. read more

i recently stayed in one the VIP rooms at Metropole. The room was amazing - only to be topped by the view of the harbor. It was a great weekend, but my only beef was with the service. The front desk was not helpful in picking a restaurant for dinner. Their restaurant just opened, so they only wanted us to go there. We got them to recommend a place, but they were not very willing to make a reservation for us. The mini bar, which I wouldn't use anyway, was so sad it turned funny. A pack of juicy fruit and some random bottles of drinks thrown in there. When we got back from dinner, they are turned down the bed and set a bottle of 'sparkling wine' out for us. I was in luck, because I love cheap champagne, but for as much as we paid for the room - a bottle of 3.50 wine is kind of insulting. The VIP continental breakfast...yeah just plan to eat out or go to the main breakfast area. All in all - next time I visit I'm staying somewhere else. There are other hotels with great views and hopefully better service. read more

My first trip Catalina was fantastic, with thanks going to Hotel Metropole. Well, Hotel Metropole and high alcohol content cocktails. The hotel is located at the far end of "the strip" which is brief jaunt from the harbor (5 minute walk). The location is great since it's not right in the middle of strip, which gets a lot of partying traffic / noise throughout the night. My friends stayed in another hotel and complained about the loud music / shouting coming from the bars. Not to mention, there is a nice cafe / courtyard in the back for a morning coffee. There is also a Vons grocery store that is very close (for extra wine, snacks, beer etc). A+ on location. The room was great and well priced for what we received. Large SUUUUPER comfy bed that I never wanted to leave, a big jacuzzi bathtub and fireplace (it was summer, so we didn't use it). We stayed in a room that was located just in front of the 'rooftop' jacuzzi (that is open to all guests), which has a great view of the ocean and stays open until 10pm. And even though our room was very close, we were never disturbed by the noise of other guests using the jacuzzi. A+ on amenities We got onto the island around 12:30p and went to just drop off our bags so we could cruise the island for a bit until check-in, but our room was already available so they let us check in early. We bought some wine at Vons but forgot a wine opener. Called down to the front desk and it was in our hands within 2 minutes. A+ on fast service and staff. read more

I'm currently out in Afghanistan and set to come home for R & R during mid-September. Since August I've been trying to contact Hotel Metropole via email in an effort to secure a room for both myself and my girlfriend. I've sent FOUR emails and received ZERO response, as well as two to Catalina Island's Chamber of Commerce asking them to ping Hotel Metropole for me. In my present location with my time schedule I cannot make phone calls to the facility, neither can I expect my girl to do it for me as this should never have been an issue in the first place. Fast-forward to now and all the rooms are rapidly filling up. The room I had originally wanted is now no longer available, and other hotels are showing no vacancies as well. I can't for the life of me think of a reason why I've been completely denied service and ignored, other than the person on the other end harboring some 60s era prejudice against combat veterans or people with Hispanic last names. I am extremely disappointed in the staff at Hotel Metropole to say the least, (more like extremely pissed. been in Afghanistan for eight months now. There are much more difficult things in life than checking your god-damned email and writing a response to someone that wants to give you their money) and unless the situation is swiftly redeemed, will be letting all of my vet buddies, contractor buddies, and basically anyone within earshot know that Hotel Metropole is less than worthless and that one would be far better served with taking their business elsewhere. If anyone here has a relative that's been in the service or was in themselves, and are state-side, I strongly encourage you to take a minute out of your day and call the Metropole to voice your concerns. Rest assured the moment I get off the bird, say hello to my loved ones and get a moment to myself, I'm going to call the Hotel for possible reservations, listen to the inevitable "I'm sorry but we're completely booked," then let whatever unfortunate soul is on the other line plus their manager and their manager too if they have one why not get some good old-fashioned Army screaming in their ear. If I wasn't set to return to Afghanistan some 16 days after my initial R & R date I really wouldn't care. I'd simply reschedule for a separate day. This is not an option. read more

Customer service was awful. It seemed as if almost everyone who worked there hated the guests. I don't write reviews often but this is how bad the customer service was. I worked in customer service in a tourist town for a while and I totally understand it's a bitch sometimes, but this was pretty unbelievable. Wish I could give this beautiful Hotel 10 stars!!! My husband and I visited Catalina for my birthday. We had never been before, so it turned out to be quite a treat. Hotel Metropole is without a doubt the most desirable hotel on the island. We were treated like Kings and Queens and the service was immaculate. We found a fantastic deal on Groupon and ended up meeting the owner of the hotel randomly as we journeyed to Catalina. He was super kind and had stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies from our local farmers market for the FREE breakfast buffet the next morning. After chatting for a bit he called ahead and had our room upgraded. Whoo hoo! We arrived by boat and then took a short 10 min walk from the busy port to the hotel. It felt like we were in another country (Venice or Madrid) and was so quaint. As we arrived we were greeted with such warmth. The receptionist was extremely helpful and shared her personal favorite restaurants, dance spots and activities on the island. She gave us our room key and the run down for breakfast and all the amenities. Our room was facing the water, beautifully decorated with dark hardwood floors, light bedding and walls. The room has everything you desire on vaca: cute mini fridge, nice jacuzzi tub, all toiletries of course, fireplace, flat screen tv, fresh flowers and gorgeous views from the balcony. We then went out for a bike ride and when we returned there there was a bottle of champagne. What?! So sweet! And the next day chocolate covered strawberries were delivered to the room. Talk about great service and hospitality! The employees and owner were so helpful, caring and down to earth-they almost felt like family. Came here for Brunch . We had the bottomless mimosas . The food was excellent. They have a buffet style buffet, and the quality of the food is superb. They were over booked but the hostess accommodated us, which was very nice. The service overall was terrific. Overall, a wonderful time here; water great food, and drinks. Happy times. read more

Hotel Metropole is a quaint, charming hotel located in walking distance of everything (although it's a pretty small place so everything is nearby!) in Avalon, Catalina. Pros: Good customer service - responded promptly to requests. Well-kept and clean rooms. Very relaxing and peaceful (but that could just be the Catalina vibe in general). Cute hotel with an older feel and history. Complimentary continental breakfast every morning (pastries, bagels, cereal, yogurt, granola, coffee, OJ, fruit, etc). Cons: The hotel is a bit dated - there are older fixtures and the overall amenities and feel of the place are a tad worn, so if you want a newer/more upscale hotel this may not be right place for you. read more

My boyfriend and I took our first vacation together to Catalina Island last week and we stayed at the Hotel Metropole during our entire stay (April 27 to April 30). The whole experience was unforgettable and everyone that we met that worked at the hotel was extremely polite and helpful. We especially want to thank Elaina Machado-Martin who worked the front desk on the nights we were there. Every time we walked by, she would smile and greet us and ask how our trip was going and if we needed anything. She also offered suggestions for things to do and places to visit and eat at, which was very helpful . When we needed things for our room, she was on top of it immediately and we got it within minutes. We definitely recommend a stay at this fabulous hotel when visiting Catalina. read more

This place is great! The rooms are much more modern than other hotels in the area and it's right in the middle of some wonderful shops and restaurants. My only issue is that we had to book on Expedia because we had received a gift card for our wedding anniversary and Expedia only had the standard rooms available to book. I checked their website before we arrived and they had suites available (we came during the slow season) but when I asked to pay to upgrade, they said that it wasn't an option because of our booking platform. It just doesn't make sense that you would let that room sit empty rather than letting me pay to upgrade just because I didn't book directly. We came out here for our anniversary and were looking to splurge to celebrate and were really let down. read more

Horrible customer service. I reserved a room via hotels.com but never actually stayed at the hotel. The hotel never attempted to contact me about not checking in or if was going to check in. I only found out they billed me $700 when I saw my credit card. I called the hotel and they were rude and unwilling to even give me a partial refund for a hotel that I never checked into. Did not get the room I pre paid for, zero help from the girl at the front desk, she had a horrible attitude towards me and every guest I saw her interact with. Young woman with dark her. When filing complaints that we didn't get the room we paid and was charged for, they did NOTHING to reimburse us for it. Fact, I paid for a bigger room with a view and balcony. Fact, I got a smaller room with a view of an Ac and no balcony and zero help from the hotel. Don't stay here, service and customer service is below zero. read more

We stayed in Room 203; The hallway headed to the room was an exterior hallway that looked down onto the loading dock of Vons. The loading dock was noisy and loud and smelled of stale burnt fried chicken. Once we got inside, it was a pretty big room with nice furnishings and a fireplace . . . which would have been great if the fireplace would have actually worked . . . but at least we couldn't smell fried chicken inside the room! The window overlooked the Metropole courtyard which was very cute. The wallpaper in the bathroom was torn and had some ink stains, but the shower was hot and had good pressure. The continental breakfast had Starbucks coffee, tea, orange juice, bagels, muffins, croissants, cereal, apples, bananas, and yogurt. Pretty average continental breakfast, but lots of it. The staff was very nice. Overall a nice place to stay. read more

The best hotel I've ever stayed at! Definitely going to be the good ol reliable on Avalon for my fiancé and I. We decided on a beach front mini suite and I was so satisfied upon my arrival. I was so paranoid that the room would not match the pictures and descriptions(it's happened to me before) but I was so relieved when everything was exactly in place! We went the second week of December. A little nippy at night but perfect during the day and it was like we had the whole island to ourselves! Waking up to the beach right outside our doors was so refreshing. The tub was amazingly relaxing! Room service was constantly knocking at our door making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. I would def recommend this place to anyone read more

This is a nice hotel, but is quite expensive, especially during the summer. The rooms are neat, well kept, and comfortable. Some rooms have a nice view of the water or looking over the courtyard. Ours just looked out over a side street, so it wasn't that nice. The bathroom had a huge tub and separate shower. I heard some rooms had no tub but a really nice shower. The rooms have a king bed, a small table and chairs, and a TV. They also have turn-down service. The location is great. There's a Von's right next door and lots of shops, to include boutique, bites to eat, and a cafe nearby. It's a good choice to stay based on proximity to everything, but I think it's overpriced. I'm not sure how it compares to nearby hotels. read more

Very friendly staff! I strolled into the hotel later on in the evening and found the staff very welcoming. My room which was admittedly one of the cheapest rooms available, was nothing special but bigger than I was expecting. It was clean and neat but oh how I loved the very fluffy pillows! Free breakfast was an added bonus. I'm not a morning person and food is just super expensive here. Some croissants, bagels, assortment of cereals and drinks. This was a great hotel for how much I paid a night. Close to the water with a Vons next door for those random munchie attacks. 4 stars only because beyond the staff, there wasn't anything truly outstanding about the actual place. read more

Hotel is just ok for over $300 a night. On the waterfront but very few rooms with view of harbor. Close to everything in town. We had a decent room on 2nd floor of small inner courtyard on a weekend. Clean, spacious. No comfortable chairs to relax and bathroom poor lighting. And, VERY NOISY! About 8 small business open onto the courtyard. Kept awake late by staff cleaning up after big parties at the M restaurant, rolling trash cans back and forth over bricks. In the day, you are directly over the spa staff chatting loudly with people in and out of laundromat, people eating, kids yelling. Felt sort of like a little village in Mexico. Probably better if you can get a room on the side over street. Definitely not a romantic place to stay. read more

We had a girls weekend in Catalina!! What a great time .8 of us from all over the country. We had 3 joining rooms .Everyone was sooo nice Whenever we walked by the front desk the staff was always smiling.And always willing to help. We never wanted to leave and we will be back We had massages & pedicures.It was one of the best massage and facial I ever had. There is a great Continental breakfast. Stayed here for two nights on our visit to Catalina. We got a very nice deal on one of the deluxe rooms on the VIP wing with roundtrip helicopter service from Long Beach. I came away from the experience very pleased, definitely willing to stay again and recommend them to friends. The deluxe room was gorgeous and large, with a floor to ceiling window that looks out onto the sea. There was also a huge jacuzzi tub that was separated from the bedroom by a sliding partition, so I could chat with my husband and see the ocean (second floor room so no worries about people spying me in the bath) while I took a soak. Awesome. The staff was friendly but seemed a little lackadaisical. No one showed us to our room (since the VIP wing has a totally separate entrance around the corner, it was actually a little confusing) and we had to call down and ask for our room to be cleaned after it hadn't been by late in the afternoon. One other minor complaint, an honor bar with snacks but no beverages? What's a girl gotta do to get an overpriced bottle of water? Missed opportunity on their part, since Catalina's water is really not drinkable. read more

We spent one night at this hotel. Their website is very well done and we were excited to stay in an ocean view room based on the photos on the website. Room #321 is absolutely gorgeous. The bathroom wall behind the jacuzzi tub opens into the room which affords a view of the casino FROM THE TUB! The room also has a gas fireplace which was perfect for our cool autumn stay. The reasons I cant give 5 stars: The lobby is tired. The couches in the lobby look like they should have been replaced a decade ago. However it does appear that work is being done on the hotel to slowly complete a rehab to match the awesome decor of the ocean view rooms. When we got to our room we found a very clean room with spotless dark wood floors (I have kids so clean floors are important)... and a vase of dead irises... ummm... it was a nice thought? Another user on yelp had raved about that fact that all rooms had bathrobes. We had booked 2 rooms and neither room had bath robes. Kind of a bummer, at least we were able to enjoy the l'occitane toiletries :) The front desk staff was very helpful and house keeping was also very helpful, even at midnight when we had a little emergency and needed more towels. I would definitely stay here again and am looking forward to returning to this hotel. read more

Excellent place to stay that is located in the Metropole shopping center. We always go out for an overnight trip and book a 90min couples massage at "Touch Of Heaven" spa located inside the hotel. A short cruise out at noon on Catalina Express, check in, have a few drinks, go get a massage, head for dinner at Steve's Steak House and have some more drinks. Perfect 1 day getaway. Rent the beach house, do your event at the M Restaurant, get your hair and makeup done at the salon in the Metropole Marketplace and enjoy everyone's smiles from having such a wonderful time. Love Catalina! We decided to try out Hotel Metropole for the 1st time on our many visits to Catalina and we weren't disappointed. Hotel Metropole was very clean and the staff was very friendly, they made our stay very pleasant. The free continental breakfast was perfect for us, we aren't big eaters so coffee, oatmeal, and fruit was perfect my daughter enjoyed the muffins and bagels. The 1 thing that bothered me was in the mornings the business (Vons truck) next to the hotel was noisy but that's not the hotels fault but it really annoyed me. Really expensive for what you get. For what I paid, I should have had a 5 star room but instead got something very average. We had to wait until late afternoon to get in to the room when we checked in. We were told it was empty but they still needed 3 hours to get it ready for some reason. I guess they only have one maid? When I asked, a late checkout was denied so we didn't really get our monies' worth. Our room was also very noisy, despite being one of their best rooms. It was right over the main coastal drive which meant we could hear every motorized golf cart that went by. I would not go back to this hotel. read more
