My wife and I went with her grandparents for our four year anniversary and their 55th anniversary which happens to be on the same day. I loved the way they have the place decorated it really feels like you step back in time. The service was great the food was great and we got our food very quickly. Came here quite by accident, and due to a review on Yelp. I had the filet of sole special, and it was the best I've ever had. My husband had the prime rib, said the horseradish made him cry, but it was worth it! Delicious! Our waitress, Merideth, was accommodating and helpful. Great experience...just what we need! Was here last week. Got seated at the bar area right away. Ordered the NY Steak and had Clam Chowder. Both were very delicious. The Clam Chowder was the best I had ever had. The place was packed. Unsure at first if this was because it was the only place in Ferndale to grab dinner or because the food was good. Ferndale and this restaurant are a like step back in time. We spent 2 nights at a nearby B&B as we explored Redwood country and the dinner we had at this place was really. good. The chicken fettuccine alfredo was creamy and tasty. The best part was the Clam Chowder soup (a specialty). My wife had steak but was slightly dissapointed as it was chewy. A solid choice for a hearty dinner after a day of sightseeing. I can't believe how good the food in this place is! Soup was amazing, salad fresh, crisp and great homemade dressing and the fettuccine sooooo creamy! Chocolate mouse light and delicious. The restaurant itself is very charming inside. I love the fact they offer smaller portions on the menu. The ONLY issue that left a bad taste in my mouth was waitress and the bill. Took her a while to acknowledge me. Not to mention the hostess asked there was something she could do for me and almost seemed shocked when I said I wanted a table. She had to go outside to ask the owner/manager if it was ok to seat me in the dining room and made him look inside so she could point me out. Guess they don't get many Hispanics around here. The older man who was the manager was cool and yes yes, of course. There were multiple tables open. The waitress charged me more than the menu price for my main dish and double for the soup. Took some convincing to get her to double check the prices. She said the prices were recently updated...yet there's no notice of this anywhere. She also said she must have been confused about the side soup price and would fix it. Got the new bill, she apologized, said she looked at a different main dish price yet somehow forgot to change the price of the soup. Makes no difference to me, I just took it off her tip. read more

The food here was great. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 5 stars is because of the service I received when I went there. I sat at the bar for over 30 minutes waiting for the waitress to serve me let alone even talk to me. After awhile, I had to awkwardly call her over and tell her that I was ready to make my order. When I did, she never even asked me what I wanted to drink. As a customer, I feel like that should be the very first thing any waitress should ask you ... especially at a bar! I told her I would like a diet coke. She forgot to bring my drink ... and let me tell you, I was THIRSTY from all those yummy free peanuts! But, after I reminded her she got my drink and brought my food and I was content. I really enjoyed the cool atmosphere there, the free peanuts you can throw wherever you'd like, the ravioli + salad (mmm), the interesting people who dine there and the whole experience of being in a Victorian town. If you happen to stumble upon this town like I did, you should consider eating at Hotel Ivanhoe. Maybe you'll get better service than I did. Another point I'd like to add: when I went to the bathroom, I was intrigued by the old Victorian style design. It was pretty cool .... but there was one reaaaaallly weird thing about it. The bathroom had 2 doors - one leading into the restaurant and one leading into the kitchen. As a result of this, when I was in the bathroom, one of the workers walked in on me! I was shocked - I have never been to a restaurant that has a door leading into the kitchen with NO lock on it! Pretty odd if you ask me. read more

Quite simply, some of the best shrimp scampi have ever eaten! My husband and I take our three young kids and our extended family here whenever we are in town, particularly for special occasions like birthdays. I'd say it's best "fine-dining" to be found in the Ferndale, Fortuna, or Ronherville area. Friendly and warm atmosphere. Always have a great experience! Other terrific menu items include: the beef kabob appetizer, the pesto ravioli, the NY steak, and the Ivanhoe penne. If going on a Friday or Saturday, however, I would recommend getting reservations. Went in on Valentine's Day without a reservation and we're encouraged to stay and order in the bar from the same menu. We did and had a great time... The seafood fettuccine was awesome and they had nice upper end wine by the glass... and affordable. It was so nice to see a restaurant that was slammed take the time to be so welcoming. Great food and Great Service, This place is true history. I've seen photos of Stage coaches from the 1890s parked in front. I love the Chicken Picatta. Great live music on Thursdays. This is a local place but others are welcome. For decades families from the area have been coming here. It's not uncommon to see locals get up, walk over to another table and shake hands with friends and neighbors. Sometimes I think tourist from the big cities just don't get it. Things are slower here, it's okay. I believe this is the furthest western tavern in the lower 48 states. read more

My husband and I did a road trip on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and eventually arrived in Ferndale. We had stayed at the Ivanhoe Hotel in the past and found it delightful, so decided to stay there again. We had a charming room with lots of small thoughtful things to make us comfortable. For dinner, we dined in the restaurant downstairs, which is elegant, cozy and the food was delicious. The personnel was considerate and caring ... they made our experience with them memorable. I went here last week at the beginning of the Fair - my aunt Marilyn knows the folks who run it and some folks that sing in the bar. The food was so good that I was blown away. I had a seafood pasta with a creamy sauce. - it was SOOOO good - oh, my. The pastas and chicken dishes are SO good. Our waiter was super accomodating and tried to do everything possible to make my 5-year old happy (this isn't really a place for tiny people, but they bent over backwards to be nice). Stopped in on a whim because the other place we love to go to in Ferndale was closed. This place is fantastic! Busy night, hostess said we would have a table in 20 minutes so we sat at the bar and had a wonderful drink while listening to some good live music. Within 15 minutes we had a table and the food was terrific! She had beef stroganoff made with tri tip, I had chicken cacciatore with polenta. Both were delicious. Dinner came with a simple salad and bread, dessert was yummy! We had the tiramisu. The staff was friendly and accommodating, this place is definitely worth a visit! read more

We had dinner at the Ivanhoe on a Saturday night and we had no reservation, but we were seated within 15 minutes. Our waitress was friendly and helpful even though we did not order wine and my husband likes his steak more well done than is proper. Our salads were excellent, particularly the Caesar salad. My husband had the Spencer steak and I had the Chicken Marsala and both were delicious. Another couple we exchanged views with agreed their meals were delicious too. She particularly mentioned her Calamari steak as being the best she had ever tasted. Had a swell dinner last night my sister and family were in from s.f. And l.a. Looking for great food and we found it. We had reservations for eight and were seated promptly. Ordered prime rib, chicken Marsala, fettuccini primavera and chicken piccata yum started with a fabulous ceasar salad and yummy clam chowder the prime rib was fabulous and as my niece said as big as my face and terrifically rare. We stayed overnight to try 2 DDD restaurants. Had dinner 7/31 at Hotel Ivanhoe and it was fantastic from start to finish. We had watched DDD and were unaware that the dishes cooked were specials that were only offered particular nights. Fortunately, I was able to try the Chicken Cacciatore, my husband had the Chicken Marsala, and my son had a New York steak. We started the meal with the calamari and sauteed mushrooms and finished with Creme Brulee and Chocolate Mousse. The meal was flawless from start to finish. Haven't had a meal that everyone was happy with in ages. Well done! read more

Was staying in Ferndale, and tried Ivanhoe for dinner. I had the chicken cacciatore, and it was wonderful. The chicken was moist and flavorful, and the sauce was the right blend of spices, all over a bed of polenta. Just be aware that they serve it on Thursdays only, and they can run out--I was told mine was the last dish of it that evening. The server was friendly and attentive. IMO, the Ivanhoe Restaurant is a much better choice than the Victorian Inn across the street. Reservations are recommended. read more

We live in Ferndale and always go to the Ivanhoe for special occasions or just for an evening out. The food is always superb and the service exemplary. I love their Snapper and their wonderful Sausage Polenta dish best. Wonderful salads and a great house dressing and terrific soups. Last evening my friend and I decided we needed a nice dinner. As usual, everything was perfect. I especially enjoyed a young family seated nearby with 3 beautifully behaved little ones who flirted with me throughout dinner. Wow! What a gem! We didn't stay at the hotel, but had dinner on the night of July 4th, and it was fabulous! Both my wife and I had the calamari steak, some of the best we've had anywhere. This is an old hotel, being refurbished, and the owners are doing a wonderful job of it. The staff was courteous and friendly, and service was good. The food here was good albeit overpriced. They have a delightful and comfortable bar in the front. The restaurant area feels a bit rustic but is charming. The food is tasty with a home-cooked taste to everything. This place seems to be frequented most by locals out on the town. Terrible/RUDE ON MY ANNIVERSARY :( . My husband had made reservations on our anniversary for 7:30pm at the Ivanhoe, for ourselves and my father-in-law. We arrived on time and no one greeted us or acknowledged our presence. Mind you, the Ivanhoe's waiting area is so small, barely anyone can stand there without getting mushed, and we were there with my wheelchair bound father-in-law (by the way, it was hard getting IN the restaurant with a wheelchair. NOT very wheelchair accessible. Very sad.) Finally, after a little wait my husband had to get the attention of the hostess and he said, "Reservation for 7:30." And the hostess literally just stared at him and walked away. My husband looked back at me like, "What was that?". Only moments later a few people walked in, the hostess greeted them, and walked them to a table. No name. No nothing. Just sat them. I was shocked for so many reasons, you'd think at least they'd want to accommodate my handicapped father-in-law, but no, we were just standing there getting swished by the people who just came in going to their table. My husband then expressed his concern to the hostess and told them we will never return. When someone makes a reservation for something like an anniversary, or just a reservation in general, it should be acknowledged. But, obviously you must not need one since people just came off the street without one and immediately got seated. Don't know much about the food they serve, but, if those are the kind of people running it (rude, classless, disrespectful), I wouldn't want to eat there. And we didn't. We expressed our disappointment and ate elsewhere. We went down the street to the Ferndale Pizza Co. where the employees were so friendly! Ferndale Pizza Co had really amazing food and for the price it was a steal. NOT the Ivanhoe though, will never go there. read more

So, my Lady did it again (gettin pretty good at this) suprised me with an early Xmas gift. Took me to Ferndale (home of the worlds tallest living Xmas tree) and to a little bar resturant called Ivanhoe's, and then dropped a set of keys from their hotel on the table. We met our friends the Anne & Ken (owners of the worlds biggest cow.. no for reals) who sponsered drinks and desserts for us even tho they couldn't join us. If you ever go, get the chicken marsela, even I couldn't eat it all. Believe me, it was so good I wanted to. My Lady was able to finish the shrimp (they were huge) barely, but between them and the amazing vegetables, the pasta did'nt get touched. Went down the street to a epic old bar called the Palace, but I was so full, I (yes me) passed on another beer, Ate dessert in the room later and blissfully passed out in a beautiffly decorated 100+ year old hotel room. Wandered Ferndale this morning quaint little stores and resturants. Thank you Baby for a great adventure. read more

After reading all the reviews about this place, we purposely rerouted our North Coast trip to arrive at the Hotel Ivanhoe on Wednesday (they're closed Mon & Tues). Although not as impressive on the outside as some of the other Ferndale Inns, the Ivanhoe lived up to its reputation in every other way. The restoration and decor was impressive. We really enjoyed the authentic Victorian feel and everything was clean and tastefully furnished. It featured originality like sash weighted windows, a clawfoot tub and quilted bedding but also offered modern amenities like a flat screen TV, free WiFi, in-room heating and coffee maker. Our room had a private bath and balcony access that would be great for parades and other street events. The bar downstairs was full of friendly locals that were freely volunteering information about the area. That's the good - now for the great: The Ivanhoe Restaurant is open for dinner Wed-Sun and serves up some of the best Italian food around. The place fills with locals and visitors alike. It's a romantic place that's good for anything from a casual meal to a special occasion. This was the best Italian we've encountered since North Beach in San Francisco. Late in the evening we were joined in the bar by most of the hotel staff including an owner, cook, bartender and restaurant servers. They seemed to enjoy each others company and most have worked there many years. It's the oldest hotel in the region and was once an official stagecoach stop (pictures to prove it in lobby). This is the real deal when it comes to historic places of the Old West. We'll be staying there again when we return to Ferndale again one day. read more
