This place is an iconic gem. A historical building, this breakfast joint breathes its history on its walls and furnishings. I ordered a standard egg breakfast and it was killer---crispy hash browns , eggs cooked as requested and crispy English muffin. Service was awesome and the jam was clearly home made! It's a must if you love a good breakfast . Cash only---so be aware!

Pappa Joes' cannot be missed!! It all starts with Grazie our waitress and graduate of Fortuna High. She exudes small town charm and warmth. Pappa Joes is an old fashioned blast from the past. Kinda reminds me f a diner in Minnesota or North Dakota. The kind of place where the farmers are all in there sitting together or apart, because they have some sort of beef over a prized cow., Where the Biscuits and Gravy are ONLY served on Wednesdays. Why Wednesday's?? who knows but 's worth the wait and the $8.50 for a man sized portion. Love this place!!

Nov 2022: Came in the day after Thanksgiving. Clearly a local's hub, nice warm and nostalgic vibe. Nothing fancy about it. Food was delicious and very generous portion sizes. We brought half our omelet with us and had it for lunch. One young server - very sweet, and one woman cook. Things took a reasonable amount of time based on staff. Coffee is very basic - but hot. Keep in mind this review is for you - Yelpers - as this business is caught in a time warp and whether you go there or not - they will survive. Only real sit- down breakfast in town. we went back again the next day and were greeted like locals. Bottom line - food is good, prices fair, service reasonable. NOTE: CASH ONLY

The interior is cool looking, a throwback to the past.

In the quaint town of Ferndale, Poppa Joe's is the perfect complement to the look and feel of the Victorian village. The small town atmosphere here is conducive to taking it slow and easy. And that's par for the course when you're in these parts, the Redwoods country. I only had a simple breakfast here, French toast and a glass of milk, but I sat at the counter and I saw dishes go past me. They looked great and an additional testament is how the folks to my right enjoyed their breakfast. They said so.

Stopped in Ferndale and glad we did. We had a nice hot breakfast with a great ambiance and awesome service. We highly recommend the biscuits and gravy, sure to satisfy! The pancake stack was perfect, fluffy and delicious! The Poppa Joe sandwich was a favorite, make sure you order with the sausage. I wish we took photos before we dug in, but it was just too good!

Great clam chowder! Old school place Creaky wooden floors, dim lights (uh, no, not for "ambience"), friends all hanging out---looking like fixtures!, simple folk behind the counter slinging normal food: hot, brown and plenty of it! (I'm stretching my use of artistic license here). But I hope I'm getting my point across that everything here is about history and the simple life. Sometimes, a place like this is just exactly what one needs!

Poppa Joes is a lost in time restaurant with lots of history since the 1880's. It's a home town feel and the food is delicious.

The owner made up the price when I got there and said they only serve biscuits and gravy on Wednesdays... it was Wednesday.

We bellied up to the bar and were the only besides another couple enjoyed drinks, and the bartender. The bartender was super attentive and made a great martini. We started with an order of oysters which were awesome. They came with a bit of a kimchi puree. I was worried the kimchi would be too overwhelming, although it was not. Those were the best oysters of our trip. For our main dishes, I got the filet mignon and my honey got the ribeye. Our steaks were cooked perfectly, although the sides were not very exciting and lacked flavor -- grilled asparagus and confit fingerling potatoes with the filet and twice baked potato with with ribeye. I only had a few bites of my sides. Each entree comes with soup or salad and I got the clam chowder, which was a solid dish. Since they found out we were celebrating our anniversary, they offered a dessert. We got the butterscotch pudding which was super thick, overly so, although the flavor was good and it was nice of them to help us celebrate. During our time there, the owners arrived, and hung out, along with a small group in their dining room. With that said, it was still very quiet which we anticipated since we were there mid-week and probably a lighter tourist season (late March).

Let me start with the greeting we received as we walked in. It was kind and very welcoming. We were seated right away. We were seated at a booth, window seating. It was nice because it was raining and you could see the green of the landscape and raindrops, very tranquil to enjoy our breakfast. Our food order was to our table in no time! I had ordered the country fried steak which came with 2 eggs cooked as you liked it, and choice of bread or hash browns. Scrambled eggs, and hash browns for me please. Everything was cooked just right! My decaf coffee was refilled a couple of times and it was very good on a cold, and rainy day. The restaurant was quite busy. Table and booth seating were available. The decor was cozy and rustic perfect for being not too far from the Redwood's, hence the name of the restaurant. The service was very friendly, helpful and quick. Hopefully we will be able to have a bite here again next year!

Our server Ashley was very nice and helpful, but unfortunately the cooks did not have it together. We received "fresh" squeezed orange juice that tasted moldy and smelled sour. Our food order wasn't taken until 20 minutes into us being sat down. After our order was taken another 30 minutes went by, I asked if our order had even started and to my surprise it had not. I witnessed the cooks arguing and have no organization. I understand being understaffed but I don't understand the disorganized mess that was happening. I paid for the drinks we received but there was no remorse or apology on their end. If anything I had to be more "understanding" about the situation then they were. I don't think I'd ever recommend this after this horrible experience.
