Love this place for drinks! The food is good too, but we may or may not have been a little too tipsy to properly assess it. This is what happens when you stay at a quaint b&b in Ferndale within walking distance of downtown. Did I mention the bartender knows what they're doing here? Well they do. So the food... I remember the fried avocado appetizer was really yummy. We also had nachos, I recall liking those too. I'm pretty sure we ordered tacos eventually. They were probably good. What a cute little place to eat for lunch. We came on a Monday lunch and was surprised that the store was pretty much packed. We were able to snag a place near the big windows which was so nice. I typically don't order tacos at restaurants because I feel like the amount is too little, but I wasn't feeling super hungry so I ordered the Fish Tacos and I was surprised about how big each taco was. It took me about 10+ bites to get through 1 taco and each taco was so big that it had to sit on its own plate. I can't say that this is the best taco I've ever had, but I appreciate the sauces they provide and the fact that the fish was very tender. If you're in Ferndale, highly recommend coming here to eat. The fact that they also have complimentary salsa and chips just makes it that much better. read more

Couldn't make a reservation because they didn't answer their phone, so ended up sitting at the bar. Ordered sopes (one asada and one pollo - no tomatoes) and chicken fajitas, side of sour cream and shredded cheddar. Got chips and salsa. Chips were good, salsa was a bit too spicy for me but flavorful. I carefully spaced them out because a refill would have been $3.50!! Sopes were out of this world!! Just the right amount of frying and toppings. I ate both while in the restaurant. I started to build a fajita but realized that they put the cheese ON the fajitas. It melted so that I couldn't pick it off to add to my chicken pieces in the tortilla. I asked for replacement on the side, server acted put out. It was their mistake, I ordered it on the side. I ended up taking the fajitas to-go after I built them. Ate them for dinner the next night at my next hotel. Chicken was dry and cut in little cubes rather than strips like I am used to getting when I order fajitas. Oh well, they had good flavor. Saturday night crowd, loud and the small restaurant echoed. Since it was so crowded it took the servers a while to refill my water. Strange billing for the fajitas, they had the tortillas billed separately - have never seen it done this way, they always have been included in the fajita charge. When it came to service, our server was the nicest! But when it came to food, it wasn't the best. When our chips in salsa arrived, the chips were delicious but the salsa on the other hand tasted like tomato sauce with some onion and cilantro. When we ordered enchiladas, they had to substitute the corn tortilla to a flower one. Which was fine, since it was a choice that we agreed to. We also ordered a asada burrito, that mainly consisted of beans, rice and hardly any meat. I wasn't offered any salsa or anything to be paired with it. Instead I asked for salsa and was charged for it. My biggest question is, What Mexican restaurant does not provide salsa for a burrito? With the kids meals, I had to order a side for rice just to pair their burritos with it. Overall I don't think this place has authentic Mexican food. Tuyas is an awesome place! TOTALLY...if you are from the 80's! The food is very flavorful! The rice has a unique flavor and the beans are offered whole or refried and are also flavorful! I will say, the atmosphere is amazing. The drinks are good, the staff is friendly, the menu is great. It is more latin infused than Mexican which is nice. Their sauces are really good. With that said, I'm disappointed with the meats. The flavors are good but the knife cuts are for toddlers at best. Tiny morsels and they skimp. Your plate will consist of alot of beans and rice, but don't expect much meat in burritos and enchiladas because it's almost non existent and with the "tiny meat" to boot. I have never seen tiny pieces of meat in fajitas, ever. It was a nice looking sliced bell pepper and onion as usual but with tiny diced meat. When someone orders carne asada fajitas, give them the asada! Or any of the meat dishes for that matter. I hope they implement changes or I doubt we will return nor recommend. read more

So we were visiting my daughter and her boyfriend who live in the area and we wanted to head to Ferndale for early dinner before watching the sunset over the ocean. I had a hankering for Mexican food and, thx again to Yelp, found Tuyas. Tuyas is on the small side in terms of seating but very cozy and we didn't feel cramped - very nice spacing on the table layout. Okay, now for the food and drink. Their house margarita is solid. I had that while my daughter had the blackberry marg which she enjoyed. We're off to a good start. Chips and salsa is the classic first appetizer. The chips tasted home made and were very good - the home made, thicker type of chip. None of us were wowed by the salsa which was very watery. On to the real first appetizer....The Avocado Bites looked intriguing - avocado, coated in panko and deep fried. I've never heard nor had that dish before so we tried it. The verdict - it was odd. Not bad, not great just odd. The soft avocado texture tied to the deep fry was different - some may love it, some may not. We were divided on the dish. Okay, on to the main dishes. The Chile Verde was a big hit as well as the fish tacos - very well prepared cod, good seasoning and was an excellent light dinner choice. My wife had the chicken taquitos which were a little on the bland side, but good. I'm big on trying a new restaurant's mole so I ordered the Chicken Mole. The dish had chunks of chicken, pre mixed with the mole vs. having a entree (like chicken or enchiladas) and the mole is drizzled on. So this was different. The taste was also different...a little more heat than most mole sauces and a thicker texture than most...again, not bad, not great, a little odd. The service was 5 star - very, very good. Went for lunch today. We ordered the chicken enchiladas. Came with rice and beans. The enchiladas were supposed to be authentic Ranchero style enchiladas. They brought our order to the table. The corn tortillas were hard, cold, and dry. The chicken inside was not the usual shredded chicken, but some weird grey specks of chopped flavorless "chicken" bits. And also dry. I had guajillo sauce my partner had mole sauce. There was only a slight difference in taste between sauces and the mole was just weird and gross. They should be ashamed to call that mess mole. The sauce on the enchiladas was just a couple of spoon fulls. Overall a dry uncooked cold mess. The way enchiladas ranchero are to be made is that tortilla is fried in oil until soft, very quickly. Then you take the tortilla and place it in the enchilada sauce covering both sides of the tortilla. The you place meat or potatoes inside and roll the tortilla up. Add enchilada sauce, lettuce, radish, tomato and crema. But Tuyas did none of that and sloppily and lazily served us cold nasty tasting chicken specks inside a dry cold uncooked corn tortilla. The beans and rice were also terrible tasting. We each took only one bite of the enchiladas and rice/beans and could not eat another bite. Don't waste your time and money on this place. Like many customers who dine here, Jamie W. and I had been on a long road trip from the Bay Area and probably should've stopped earlier to sustain ourselves. I already knew Ferndale was a charming town from my first visit here about three years back, so we took our chances finding a place for a late lunch. We noticed this bright Mexican spot on Main Street was pretty popular, so we stopped in to discover a colorfully decorated space that matched up well with our vacation mood. I think it would be accurate to describe the Mexican food served here as California-style Mexican along the lines of chains like Rubio's or Chipotle. That might be good news for some, but there was just something persistently unexceptional about what we had. Jamie ordered the $10 Carnitas Burrito. We dined here in the middle of a long trip from Tucson to Northern California, and this was the best experience we had in the 12 day trip including the Bay Area, Sacramento, and San Diego. I came here because the Yelp reviews were so good and boy, they were right! This really may well be the best Mexican food we've had anywhere! First of all, the ambiance is charming, I loved the art work and the overall feel and vibe of this little restaurant. Secondly, the food was just fantastic! Thirdly, they have MANY gluten-free options. And finally, the service was just wonderful. And the manager came over to chat with us as well (I like that, and she really appreciated our business). The margaritas were great. We started with the Las Tazas (chicken mole filled lettuce cups), not just a great gluten-free option but a delicious appetizer, period. I'm not even normally a fan of mole but Tuyas' was delicious. My wife absolutely LOVED the street tacos, and I had the Tuyas Enchlada platter, and it blew me away. I don't know what it was. Every single element was delicious. I actually enjoyed the taste of the tortilla, let alone the awesome tomatillo sauce, the moist, flavorful chicken, and even the sides (both rice and beans) were outstanding! It's not that often that every single element of a dish shines but that was certainly the case with these enchiladas. Listen, mix the corn salsa with the house salsa. The chips are so light and airy. Service was quick and attentive. Nothing but fresh food here. Nothing greasy or over seasoned. We started with the Calamari and it was battered in masa which I never tried before and it was delicious! The chips and salsa was fresh and excellent. It comes with red salsa but we also asked for the green salsa and it was just as good. I played it safe and ordered the Asada burrito and my wife had the steak fajitas. We were both very satisfied with our meals. I love Horchata but always compare it to my Father in law's because that's the best I have had so far. Topping for the 5 taquitos was some shredded lettuce, a teaspoon each of sour cream & tomatoes. Not a teaspoon for each taquitos, but a teaspoon for all of them. Don't believe them when they say the mole was extra spicy! It was no more spicy than the salsa that came with the chips. Both were great, although I added a little salt to the mole.
