So I booked this hotel on a whim when my boyfriend and I decided to go on a trip to Houston. After spending the money on Expedia, I came to yelp to look at the reviews, only to see that they were mostly one star! Immediately, I tried to get a refund and cancel and find a different hotel, but they had a no refund policy. I had a two star experience. The TV was nice, the bed was pretty comfortable, and the location was good. As for the rest of the hotel, I thought it was pretty dirty, and seemed cheap. There was a half eaten chicken wing In the elevator and the whole place smells like cologne. The parking situation was pretty annoying to, because it was expensive. There wasn't a microwave in our room, There wasn't a working fridge either. We had leftovers but we just let them sit out overnight because what else were we gonna do LOL. Also it is not quiet, people party all night here. Definitely won't be returning and Wouldn't recommend this place to my friends. read more

Check in was easy process. Our son was arriving at a later time and was able to check him in and they awaited for his arrival with his key while we were out. Our room was really hot and they immediately came up to to see what to do, they ended up moving us to another room, up and still provided us with a view. Add on packages to the room were not available. No valet parking. Covid has really affected the place. Not worth the price for what it is now. I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. During all four days, I experienced great service by all employees: the receptionist, the waitress for breakfast, the security guard, the cleaning personnel... all were amazing. Whenever I needed something, people took care of me immediately. I know that the hotel was busy accommodating many customers, but I definitely felt cared for. Moreover, the room itself was great. I didn't find any problems with the hotel itself; the bathroom was clean, the bedding was comfortable, and the interior of the hotel room was very well-decorated. The room was quiet and I slept peacefully. Most of all, it was great waking up to an amazing Houston view, and looking out the window at night to see the nightlife. read more

The Hotel Derek! Wow. What can I say? The valet at the hotel is a 3rd party contractor for the hotel. If you have a problem with the valet, sorry but the hotel/front desk says "take it up with the valet company". They don't get involved and they don't charge for the valet it's the valet company's charge. Also, this is a holdover from the previous group. If you stay a couple of days your butt will be raw because they use single sheet, sandpaper like toilet tissue. Done with this hotel! read more

Extremely disappointed! I called before I booked to confirm that the pool and gym were open as I wanted a mini staycation and was told the pool was open until 9pm and the gym was 24/7. I checked in and was informed that none of the amenities were available and the gentlemen who checked me in just laughed about it when I told him that those amenities are the main reason I booked this hotel. Absolutely disappointed. They should have offered an immediate refund. To top it off I got a room with a terrible view of an air conditioning unit and multiple parking garages. Terrible. read more

I rarely write bad reviews but I had to with my stay last week at the Hotel Derek. I stayed two nights (Wed-Thurs) and got mauled by BED BUGS!!!! I remember seeing what looked like a tiny bug on my arm on Thursday and thought nothing of it. Friday morning I remember feeling a little bit itchy but thought maybe it's because it's so hot it's my skin reacting. By the time I left got the room Friday to head to my office before my flight my feet and torso were in fire. I was wearing a dress and couldn't check out my torso but I saw little bumps on my feet starting to get a lot larger. By Saturday I am absolutely miserable and my abdomen and feet are covered in red bites! I called over to the hotel and sent the manager pictures but still have not heard back. The manager had also told me that the room was occupied after I left!!! Poor people! I am seriously traumatized!!! I had to Spray down my Luggage, my Bed, everything in my room, and have to get rid of my carpet in my living room (zgallerie carpet). I cannot imagine how bad this infestation is at the Hotel Derek. I was in room 422, I'm sure my room wasn't the only one given how easy it is for these stupid Bugs to spread. :( read more

Parking was ok. However, the use a sketchy company called Premium Parking. Service was terrible, app didn't work, poor customer service. App was later hacked and company will not refund fraudulent charge. Customer service reps didn't have authority to make decisions, they IM someone for decisions. Therefore, CSRs are working from home for easy stuff, who knows where management sits - maybe out of the country? read more

This spot had a cute aesthetic overall; but a few things could use updating. 1) the shower -- looks like a generic bathtub from the 80s, not cute. 2) mini bar fridge was not cold. 3) lamp was missing a light bulb. 4) room service would not bring up wine glasses or plastic ups either. The elevator was broken and we had to park on the sixth floor. They did not offer to comp ther 25 dollar parking for a day for the inconvenience. I spoke to a member of the staff and advised how inconvenient the broken elevator was and he literally shrugged it off by mentioning someone was on a golf cart eacorting patrons. We never saw anyone on the elevator. I've been to a plethora of hotels all around the world and this is the first one I've been to where no one ever answered the phone for room service or front desk. This spot is overrated. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're looking to have a private event downstairs. The view is nice from the room. This has been the worst experience at your hotel and I would like to be contacted by a manager. Several of your staff have shown up under the influence and a majority of our stay has been a very disappointing experience... broken doors, sinks, etc. we ordered room service and our salmon lox bagels were not edible. I stayed in this hotel just 2 years ago and it was amazing! However, this trip I just went on, was a disaster. The hotels website is so misleading. There is NO amenities. You can't even purchase a bottle of water in the hotel. The bar, pool and gym were closed. The front desk receptionist was asked about it and she stated "the new owners aren't sure what they are doing with the hotel so they aren't paying the permits to open the amenities". Our room was the ONLY thing that matched the pictures on the website. The refrigerator didn't work so we couldn't even drink the bottle of water we bought across the street at CVS the next day. The shower nozzle to turn it on was glued down so you could only take a bath. The hallways/elevators smelled of marijuana. So disappointing to see how fast a hotel went downhill in just 2 years. Absolutely ridiculous place to stay - will scam you out of your money any way they can. First off, self-parking for a day is $27 dollars in their lot. Furthermore, they charge a $16 service fee(?) on top of their stay price. Finally, they placed bottles of water on my table (which, for most hotels, ESPECIALLY for hotels of their calibre) which you would assume are complimentary, but then charged me $7 per bottle saying that they were actually part of the minibar beverages even though they were NOT in the minibar area. Called them to clarify, and they would not do anything about the charges - says its "hotel policy". What a load of bull. Furthermore, every room and hallway is heavily scented, so if you're sensitive to fragrances, this is not the place for you. Definitely would not recommend if you want to keep your sanity and not stress about your time away from home. You'd be better off at a Hilton or a Sheraton nearby. read more

This hotel is a very big scam . When you google on line it states that it's a 4-5 star hotel . They make it look very plush and very fancy and very big . In person it is very run down and the beds are the size that a 8 or 9 year old could fit on . The place was old , out dated, & dirty . The elevators did not work . It took us 3 times to be able to get to the right floor . We selected floor 10 & it took me to floor 7 and then selected floor 10 and it took me to floor 14 & then to floor 4. In addition in between 3 tries the elevator kept getting stuck & I thought we were going to get stuck in the elevator & not be able to get out . The customer service at the front desk was very bad . The gal with the multi colored hair and piercings had no personality . She stated above and beyond already paying for my room ahead of time she was going to charge an additional 800 dollars to hold in case any damage was done to the room & the cost would come off 7-14 days later . This was never told to me prior to my stay or anything on my booking confirmation. This place is a complete scam . The parking is horrible and you have to park far and carry your own bags or spend a high price to have it in vallet. On the website it shows a lot of bars and fancy restaurants in the hotel . Everything was closed and was dark and dreary . We did not even stay an hr.& I asked for a refund . When I asked for a refund I dealt with a different lady who I did not get her name . However ; I asked if I could have a receipt to prove I was being refunded. The lady was shady and stated she could not provide a receipt for the refund . I had to demand 3 times as I was not leaving until I had proof that I was not charged . I was rate this place a zero , but this system requires you to give at least one star . read more

Stayed at the one on Westheimer. Biggest problem was the smell . The place reeks of marijuana . In the halls and rooms. Told management and they didn't seems concerned or apologized for it. The bathroom mirror glaze was faded and the coffee maker had no cups. The robe that comes for guests , only one was hanging in the closet. It was like putting heavy horse blanket. I had the pleasure of staying in one of the two Penthouse Suites at the Hotel Derek for a few days. Overall, it was a very positive experience. Hotel Derek is a boutique property with very contemporary design that has 300+ rooms and suites. Its lobby is filled with cool spaces to relax and socialize. Cool art is displayed throughout the entire hotel. The onsite bar/restaurant serves good food and drink (with a very nice happy hour). And there is a business center, fitness facility and small pool. The location, next to the Galleria, is also nice. The Penthouse Suites are very large at 1,200 square feet, and was designed by Texas-based design firm Flick Mars in collaboration with Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, one of the country's premiere furniture retailers with a location just steps from the hotel. Like the overall property, the styling of the Penthouse Suites is very contemporary. They each have a dining area, living room with a wet bar, bedroom, two full bathrooms and a private balcony. I found the space very comfortable and approachable. However, as nice as it was, I find the value of the $2,200 per night price point questionable. I think my wallet and I would have been just as pleased with the property staying in a smaller (yet still spacious at 350 square feet) and far less expensive Standard Room. read more

Why anyone would stay in this decrepit old hotel is beyond me. $200 for a 3 star hotel should have been my first clue. I paid for a king room, city view, what I got is a handicapped room with a shower that sprayed water EVERYWHERE + a view of a cement roof and possibly the galleria? When I went to check in I had to park my car in the garage. Check-in is at four, check out is at 11. For anyone who has a hard time with math, that is 19 hours. The parking garage only allows you to pay for really odd hours, but the only option for hotel goers is 24 hours. They have like a 3 hour, 8 hour + a couple of other options but not like 20 hour. How convenient. Then you have to walk to a hotel entrance which requires a key card to get into which you don't have because you haven't checked in yet. Hopefully you can get someone on the phone who will walk to open the door for you. Amazing. Then I get to the counter and for some reason the girl there decides to give me a room I didn't pay for, a room that was cheaper than what I paid for. I get to the room and I tell her I'm sorry I can't change my room because I am going to a dinner and have to quickly get ready. I am very upset that you didn't give me the room that I paid for. She tried to tell me that because I booked through a third-party I had to take what they gave me even though they are the ones that give the third-party the rooms that they have for rent. Trash. So as I'm getting ready I realize I'm sweating because the air WILL NOT go below 69°. In 90° weather in humid nasty Houston. Anyway, I wasted so much money on this hovel that I sent a note to management saying how disappointed I was in this rundown shack of a room that you charged me $200 for. I know this won't come as a surprise, but they did not get back to me. I didn't realize that I wrote a bad review about this hotel 10 years ago. Trust me when I say nothing has changed. They fixed up the lobby to lure you in thinking that you were going to stay in a beautiful hotel room, but really all they did was put lipstick on a pig. If I could give 0 stars I would because I was very unsatisfied with my stay! My first issue is that they expect you to pay either $40 a night to valet or $30 a night to self park... this hotel isn't the cheapest as is so to have to pay to park is sick! Then the self parking garage is FILTHY! Smells like pure piss, trash everywhere, broken glass everywhere, security guard asleep every time we went to the garage. Just sad. Then there's the room... the smell as soon as you walk in reeks of cigarettes and mildew. Looked past that (which I shouldn't have had to) restrooms have not been swept or mopped, had to clean shower myself because it didn't look that clean, there no microwaves in the room at a 4-5 star restaurant... doesn't even make sense. The worst part was the pool!!! We decided to go out to the pool for a little date but once going down there it was an immediate turn around! Pool water looked disgusting, cups and trash in the bottom of the pool, the smell of pee at the pool as well was horrible, chairs dirty, everything just looked run down and unkept. Very displeased with my whole experience at this hotel, definitely will not be returning and letting my friends and family know that this is not the place to stay AT ALL. Jim Carey. Remember that name. My stay at Mr. Hotline Bling's favorite Houston hotel wouldn't have been as incredible without Jim. And no, I'm not talking about the Ace Ventura actor but Sir Hotel Derek himself. He knew the ins and outs of the hotel, and ensured that my guest and I were well taken care of. Not sure who his boss is but seriously, this guy needs a raise! Hotel Derek exceeded my expectations. From the perfect location, to the stylish pool, to the posh furnishings, to the complimentary cocktail that I indulged in at check-in. The musky scent that filled the building made me think I had passed by an attractive stranger on his way out for a night on the town. Rumor has it, they sell this special scent by the bottle. I would've bought 12. Trust me, you're going to love it! Parking is a little steep at $23/night--especially when the average nightly rate at this hotel is around $165. I managed to find a $95 rate, which kept my parking fee complaints at a minimum. The room and the bathrooms are the perfect size, and that eclectic orange couch just adds the right amount of pizzazz. There is no doubt in my mind that I'll be visiting this property again. You should too. And ask for Jim! :) read more

I really wish I would've looked at the Yelp reviews before booking this hotel. So honestly, I blame myself. My friend and I booked this hotel for a weekend with the idea we were getting luxury, especially considering the price we paid for each night. Customer service when we checked in was cold, detached and strictly transactional. For us spending nearly $600, I expect a smile, some basic pleasantries, and maybe a recommendation or two for a restaurant in the area. Nope, we actually got cut off when we asked questions about simple things like parking. Thankfully, it was included in our rate. They get one extra star for that. We had multiple bags, didn't get asked if we needed a luggage cart or anything. When we got to our room, it was hot and humid, our hair dryer didn't work, and the walls had stains on them and peeling paint. We asked for cleaning service, and we never received it. We asked for clean towels, because you know, we never got our room cleaned, and it took over an hour and two phone calls to receive them. They towels were also small and threadbare. On day 2, our air conditioner went out completely, and we had to pack up to go to another room. The final straw was when my friend wanted to warm up leftover food, but there wasn't a microwave in our room. We asked if there was one downstairs we could use and were told it'd be a $20 charge to bring one up to our room because there wasn't anything for public usage. What??? Save your money. Don't believe the hype. Take your business elsewhere. This place is the pits. read more

Avoid this hotel!!! The pictures are deceiving! Im so glad I was the first to arrive to this hotel as part of my family reunion (50+ pp, 15-20 rooms). This is our 23rd family reunion and our first post Covid. We have traveled all over the country over the last 23 years and are very familiar with the hospitality industry. However, let me start of by saying this has been the far worse experience. My husband and I arrived around midnight and I'm so glad we did. Unfortunately due to not having our rental car at that moment we were not able to leave. We ordered Uber eats and while my husband was in the lobby waiting he was shocked to see that it was prostitution going on at the hotel. To be clear while waiting for about 15 min all he kept seeing were multiple cars pulling up dropping off young provocatively dressed women and men coming down to let them in. Not to mention the doors when we arrived were locked and only accessible to hotel guest. That was an indication that something was wrong relating it to safety(either homelessness or unwanted guests). No security was on the premises. The inside of the libby is nice. The room hideous! The bed platform was extremely low t the ground ( not helpful for elder ppl or ppl with bad backs and knees) the mattress was extremely worn out( no support at all caving in). The cushion on the couch had a big rip in it and was flipped over incorrectly. The liens was stained(sheets & towels). The shower head needed to be replaced after seeing it had been fixed multiple times. All in all the hotel needs to be completely remodeled and updated. Furniture needs to be replaced. After my husband seeing the type of activity that was be conducted it explains the condition of the room. The following morning we checked out as soon as we could. I expressed my frustration and concerns of safety for my family members and the front desk attendee was not surprised. They mentioned they've heard stories of that exact thing taking place and even went as far as saying that depending on the type of girl it is and how much they want to spend,determines on if they come there or another hotel! For the employees to be aware and management still doesn't do anything in their power to have that corrected is insane! They even stated the hotel was sold and purchased by new investors and the renovations would take place at the end of the year. However the manager at the time who is no longer there told us that the hotel was going thru renovations and would be completed prior to our reunion in July. I've requested a full refund for the one night I stayed and am still waiting to hear back from the GM who is also trying to hold us responsible for the contract after not filling there end remodeled clean rooms. Not too mention the fact that this is a family reunion meaning all ages would be attending, and the safety of women kids and elders in the lobby could at any point witness what my husband saw taking place. I'm so glad I was able to have my family booked at a way better hotel less than a mile away. Where we experienced having a safe comfortable clean room with better amenities and not having to worry about the safety and crowd walking in and out of the lobby! I have never stayed here. But I am currently on hold to cancel a reservation because my plans have changed. But I am being given some BS excuse about them not being able to see it because they are merging with another company. Nvm the fact, that I never received an confirmation email- even after calling about it twice. So here we are now- me being told that if my card gets charged-even though I am calling WELL BEFORE their cancellation deadline- they will refund the money. Which I don't understand. My company pre-paid 6-rooms for 39 nights total for the OTC Conference in Houston this week. This reservation was made through a third party in the Fall of 2018. One month prior, a booking was made through Booking.com for the same rooms. Now, Hotel Derek is saying that no-show fees apply to these rooms. We will be charged an extra 6 nights. I will gladly pay the added charges to stay at an honest national chain like Marriott, Hilton, any place other than Hotel Derek. Their policies are not customer friendly and they are only looking to capitalize on the flux of attendees for the OTC. If you think you are saving money staying at Hotel Derek, think again. It will cost you way more than what they advertise. I'm editing this review to add one more thing: there is a $100 dollar a night incentive hold put on your credit card when you check in! read more

Checked in this morning after a red eye out of LA for a wedding and first thing they want is $100/night for incidentals that they hold for 3-5 business days AFTER you check out. "Hole in the wall" is to much of a nice statement. I arrived to hotel Derek on yesterday evening and it's been a terrible experience. They shared that we had to pay $15 for a soda, $20 a day for parking, how much an in room movie would cost but FAILED to tell us that the AC doesn't work! In the middle of summer and I'm asthmatic this is completely unacceptable. The room was dirty and hair was in the sheets.However, the option that the manager offered us wasn't an option. Upon entering our room, we immediately noticed an attempt to pry the door open as the door jam was permanently gapped. Mold was in the bathtub. Cords were all wrapped up around each other, items beat up, random stains on walls. It was definitely not a 4-star experience. We checked out within 2 hours though we had pre-paid for 4 nights.
