We came back for a second visit today because my kids and I really enjoyed our first experience. Unfortunately, this visit was completely different. Right from the start, the greeting wasn't very welcoming. After they asked for my children's ages and we told them, another employee came over, spoke to our waitress in their language while looking at my son (who is a big 10-year-old), and it immediately felt like they didn't believe us about his age. Our waitress continued asking questions while the other employee kept talking to her. She eventually addressed us directly and informed us that my son would be charged $25. We had no issue paying the price if that's their policy. We simply explained that during our first visit, each of the four of us was asked what broth we wanted and we were each served individual pots, so we were confused when told we had to share. Instead of clarifying the policy, we were told that wasn't true and that, because they've been open for five years, they would never have done that. At that point, I politely said never mind, and my family got up and left. What upset me most wasn't the pricing. We're more than willing to pay what we need to--we spent over $100 during our first visit. It was the way we were spoken to and the feeling that we were being questioned about our son's age. As my son said when we left, he no longer had an appetite. It's disappointing because we genuinely liked this place and were looking forward to coming back. Hot Pot for Days is my family go to hot pot spots. I love combining the Thai spicy broth with the beef broth. They have a nice variety of veggies, but no enoki mushrooms. They often have clams, squid, muscles and shrimp, fish balls and tofu and imitation crab meat on the self-serve with quite a few options of vegetables. I love the Napa cabbage and radish best. Sometimes, I grab a bakchoy. Do add a couple of tomato wedges for extra tang. Order thinly sliced brisket, pork belly and eye of round. All are good. I like to add chicken as well to give the broth one more layer of flavor. Their house dipping sauce is wonderful. Often, there is only one server. I went against my better judgement and revisited Hot Pot For Days again. This time I took my wife. There have been some changes, but not for the better. To start, the dinner menu has slimmed down. Instead of a decent about of protein to choose from, it's now 5 items. 2 beef, 1 chicken and two fish. One of the beef was brisket and wow was it horrible (see pick). When I say this I'm not exaggerating but it was 90% fat. Completely inedible. We were there for about an hour and were offered more meat just one time. The atmosphere was fine if you're into industrial lighting and tables that feel like they were borrowed from a high school lunchroom. Our waitress was sweet, but she spoke so softly I felt like I was trying to decode a secret message every time she came by. She also didn't write anything down--bold move when there are four people ordering multiple proteins. Shockingly, the order came out wrong. The cook brought the platter, we pointed out the mistake, and he immediately informed us that we were wrong. Then he snapped at the waitress, stormed off like a man personally offended by beef slices, and eventually returned with the correct items. Nothing says "bon appétit" like a side of simmering rage. We powered through the meal, but the grand finale was waiting for us at the exit. Right by the front door, on the chairs where guests first walk in, sat a pair of dirty underwear and used face masks. They offer 4 kinds of broth, 7 or 8 kinds of meat and a buffet of lots of vegetables, noodles, some raw seafood, and tofu. You pick the broth and add all you want from the buffet and the unlimited meats from your server to cook up in the boiling pot of broth. I thought some things that I tried I liked better than other things but everything I tried seemed very fresh and the place looked very neat and clean. I thought that the Thai Style broth had a lot more going on with it than the beef broth. Out of all the meats and fishes I tried my favorite combination was the catfish in the Thai Style broth.......that is unusual for me because catfish is usually my least favorite fish but for some reason it did taste the best together. I also added a lot of vegetables, some noodles, and Asian squash. I thought it was a good healthy meal and worth what I paid. It's not like Jimmy Chu's Shabu Fondu so don't expect that. The meats and broth taste great but to wait an hour just to get maybe $10 of meat because nobody ever came (not even to refill our nearly empty water) is ridiculous. Eventually the last plate only had 3 thin slices of meat! After ordering 2 plates of meat, she started ignoring our table all together, needing to call over the other servers because she dodged us. All in all we only ordered 4 plates, which wasn't even much in the first place. Excuse you, but if you consider a place to be ALL YOU CAN EAT, then I will be eating until I am satisfied. Anyways, the food was savory. The meat was tender and tasted fresh. I wanted the vegetable broth, I was asked if I was vegetarian I said no and they asked if pork broth was better. I agreed to it which I was happy because it was delicious. I really enjoyed the ramen. They had different options for noodles. Lots of reviews here mention the customer service...I sorta understand. It was our first time trying Hot Pot and the person who explained it to us made it seem much more difficult than it really is. Once we figured it out, it wasn't bad, but it took a while for explanations. Also, it wasn't very crowded, we weren't really checked on and had some drinks that needed refilling. The tables are all booths with burners in the middle for the broths. You're served a bowl for your food, a soy/sesame sauce for dipping, chopsticks, forks, spoons and napkins. For the most part, we used our chopsticks, but it was nice having the spoons for the broth, or you could just drink it straight from your bowl. Now, on to the food...there were 3 of us, so we ordered 3 different broths: the Pork Broth, Spicy Beef Broth and Thai Style Spicy Broth. We also ordered 3 different kinds of meats for our broths: Brisket, Chuck and Pork Belly. I'll be honest, when they brought the meats (which are sliced very thinly so they'll cook quick in the broth), we couldn't tell which one was which and they all tasted the same. They were good, but I had no idea which meat I was eating. Then, they have a buffet set up for your veggies, seafoods and noodles. You can go up and get whatever you prefer to include in your broth. Now, most of the items were pretty basic, but there were a few we weren't sure of. It would've been nice if they were labeled, so we could tell what everything was. Once you have everything, you can start filling up your broths with whatever meats, veggies and noodles you want. It was actually nice to try the different things, and the broths would take on the flavors of whatever you included in them, which made for some delicious tastes. It's a slow meal, since you're taking the time to cook the food and try different things, so it can be an enjoyable evening with friends or family. When we were done, we waited for the checks (it's $24.99 per person all you can eat). We finally had to track someone down for that and they told us the register was in the back and we had to go up there to pay. We had no idea there was a register in the back!
