We came here for dinner tonight (I swear we cook too! I know it doesn't look like it!) and it wasn't very busy around 6pm. We sat down and ordered the french onion burger with waffle fries and the classic cow with waffle fries. The server was really nice and chit chatted with us a bit about things to do in MKE. My fiancee, Alyssa has lived here for awhile but I haven't so it was always nice to know new places/things to do. Apparently they also do trivia on Tuesdays here, which I have wanted to do for awhile somewhere. My burger was the classic cow--it was very messy but SOOO good! It was basically their take of a typical quarter pounder with a great tasting "special sauce". It tasted like it was partly mixed with mayo but looked like Big Mac sauce, so I don't know what it was. It was really good though. The onions and pickles on my burger gave it a nice flavor but unlike some places this didn't have too many onions--so that was great! The waffle fries were breaded well and there were just so many of them. I knew I shouldn't eat all of them, but I couldn't help myself. Next time, I might have to only eat about half lol. Alyssa had the french onion burger and it looked delicious! I almost wanted to switch our plates when she wasn't looking lol. Hers came with bone marrow butter and she said it was very full of flavor and melded perfectly together to give it a solid french onion taste. She also loved her waffle fries. Not going to lie I actually ate half of hers--probably should just eat half of mine and call it a day next time LOL! The inside was pretty quiet with several TVs playing different things, one playing trivia that I kept doing as I ate. Have had Hot Head in two occasions! First was take out, where we just got the regular Southern Fried, and it was SO salty! Fried chicken certainly needs to be salted, but my husband and I were grabbing for water to quench an undeniable thirst after we ate. More recently, I visited the restaurant itself to give it a go again. Space was great, got a seat at 7pm on a Saturday in the adjacent space, Crafty Cow, which shares a kitchen and menu apparently?! Spicy Paloma cocktail was good, just the right amount of kick. No straws unless you ask! Fried pickles to start were tasty, the dipping sauce was naughty it was so thick!! I got the chicken and cheddar sandwich, southern fried style. If it was going to be salty, I would know as there was bacon on it too! It was really a dense sandwich, and I only ate half, but it was good!! Pimento cheese was just the right amount. My friend got the Nashville hot style, and my goodness it smelled spicy, and was dripping red liquid that I would never touch, but if that's your thing, he loved it!! After two visits to this very well-known Hot Head/Crafty Cow on the very not hidden street of KK, I'm ready to review this basic burger and fried chicken restaurant that doesn't seem to do either dish especially well. Perhaps it's the dual business concept that one busy kitchen has to manage, but on both visits, our meals probably took an hour to be delivered after the order was taken. Neither night was especially busy. The fried chicken was extremely underwhelming. Over cooked and dry. On both visits we absolutely could not get enough of the Vietnamese Brussels Sprouts with chili lime sauce & cashews! I love the craft beer and flight options here (crafty), and can see coming back just for the brussels sprouts and a beer flight. But meals here probably aren't in my future. read more

Been wanting to try their Chicken for a long time but never was in the area until Christmas week. It's been about 10 days and I'm craving another chicken sandwich. Our party of 4 tried many items including Cheese curds, tacos, margaritas, Nashville Hot chicken sandwich, southern chicken sandwich, fries, Sangria and fried chicken. Everything was delicious! The Nashville hot, is hot for me but really good. I would get the sauce on the side next time. The southern fried chicken sammy, I cannot express how delish it was. Hot Head and its sister restaurant Crafty Cow have been on my radar for a while, but I never had the chance to stop in until this weekend. I grabbed a table for one and was greeted promptly and pleasantly by the bartender who appeared to be pulling double-duty. I failed to get her name, but she provided excellent service throughout the meal and deserves accolades. I got to business with a $5 happy hour Moscow Mule and an order of cheese curds. I've only lived in WI for five years and, aside from Culver's magnificent product, have probably only sampled curds from five or six other spots... But these were the best I've ever eaten, not close. The batter is so light and airy, it dissolves immediately in your mouth, and the cheese they use is exquisite. You get a heaping bowl for $8.50 or just $5 during happy hour (3-6 pm), and I would be making a return trip for more curds even if I hated the rest of the menu, which I certainly did not. I order 4 pieces of fried chicken and the full accompaniment of sauces (on the side, per my server's recommendation). The chicken was cooked divinely and would be perfectly good enough served plain. The mustard and honey butter sauces were great, and the hot sauce burned slowly and steadily at maybe a 7/10 heat level, certainly tolerable for most. If you love chicken then you need to come here. Fried, spicy, greasy soul fulfilling chicken is on the menu and you want it. Everything is really fairly priced and portions tend to be a touch too much. Burgers are huge so prepare yourself. The Nashville got chicken is off the chain and you're going to love it if you like spicy. Oh and don't forget a side of salted watermelon to cool the pallet. Usually you sit on the crafty cow side of the place and I think the hot head dining area is only when they are super busy. Friendly service, great drink selection but the deceptive insulting pricing just kills the whole dining experience. This is another one of those places that just has no respect for customers and pads the bill with hidden charges. I caught a $2.00 hidden up-charge for the ice cube in my rum. That's just inexcusable to begin with but then the waitresses are trained to add insult to theft with the strangely specious "on the rocks means more liquor" explanation. I didn't order "more liquor." If the bartender chooses to give me a generous pour that's on the house. I warned her to either just take the hidden up-charge off the bill or not, but to spare me the patronizing and condescending "on the rocks means a double pour" prevarication. She couldn't do it, she just had to tell me what "on the rocks," means in this dishonest place. The very clear implication is that I don't know what "on the rocks means," and that is most certainly not the case. You can look it up in any of the five kinds of English dictionaries (Queen's, American, Canadian, Australian, "Urban") and you get some variation of: 1. (of a relationship or enterprise) experiencing difficulties and likely to fail. synonyms: in difficulty, in trouble, breaking down, practically over, heading for divorce, heading for the divorce courts; More 2. (of a drink) served undiluted and with ice cubes. synonyms: with ice, on ice "he ordered a Scotch on the rocks" The first definition might describe the future of restaurants that have deceptive pricing like this but in no dictionary (and I have many) does it say that "on the rocks" means charge the customer an extra amount of money because people who want an undiluted whiskey or rum are too stupid to notice. For the record, I didn't even say, "on the rocks," I just called the rum and asked for an ice cube. I absolutely hate having my intelligence insulted, I've been ordering drinks since 1975 and the audacity of some bar owners thinking they can foist this legerdemain on their most experienced and sophisticated drinkers is quite unbelievable. Why not try your nefarious hidden up-charges on the people who order Appletinis? Actually, I don't know that they don't. I guess they think that a man in his fifties is already losing his memory and won't remember what "on the rocks" means so they can make up some other meaning. Look, if you need the $2 just ask me for a donation and might donate $2 but don't try to steal it from me with this hidden upcharge nonsense. We visited Crafty Cow/Hot Head Fried Chicken with the Milwaukee Beer Society for a beer and wing pairing event. I had been wanting to check out both places for a while, so I was happy to have an excuse to do so! The service was great, the atmosphere was pleasant and cozy, the beer was good, and food was delicious. They offer Trivia on Wednesdays, so our group had a good time participating in this as well. The menu has a good selection of standard Wisconsin pub food with burgers and entrees, but the fried chicken options stand out. We started off with the cheese curds (delicious, light, and buttery) and moved on to the wing pairing. We sampled the following sauces: Honey Wasabi, Maple Bacon, Buffalo Dry Rub, White BBQ, Nashville Hot, and Carolina Gold. The winner of the evening for our group was the Nashville hot, closely followed by the Buffalo Dry Rub. The Nashville hot was definitely spicy but did have almost a nice bit of sweet honey taste underneath the top layer. The Buffalo Dry Rub was phenomenal as well. The Honey Wasabi was probably third, and while the other sauces were good, I felt the top three were a bit above. The White BBQ was distinctly vinegar-esqe, the Maple Bacon was good but a little odd with the bits of bacon on it (just a little confusing for the taste buds on a chicken wing), and the Carolina Gold was mustard-y (as it is supposed to be, but just not wild about it). The location has a great tap list with a lot of unique local and regional beers to choose from. Check out their happy hour between 4:30 and 6:30PM, which included $1 off tap pours, $5 cheese curds, and some other solid-looking drink specials. Wednesdays also featured trivia and 50 cent wings, and after trying so many wings, this would be worth a Wednesday visit to have more! We didn't try the Peri Peri Rub or Chili Lime also mentioned on the menu, and I would like to return to have those flavors as well as check out some of the other delicious-looking options. I have to say I'm surprised this place doesn't have more stars. My husband and I stopped by here for dinner on July 25th and we were so impressed with the food and the service. First off, let me say they really took care to make sure the place was sanitized and patrons were appropriately distanced. Waitstaff were also wearing masks so we felt comfortable eating inside. Now to the food and service. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We chose the Sambal fried cauliflower for an appetizer and two Fancy Nashville hot Chicken sandwiches with the tater tots and Sweet potato waffle fries as sides. Well let me just say, that was our first mistake. With the starter and the sides we quickly realized we only needed one chicken sandwich so we shared one of them and had the other wrapped to take home. Yay, another chicken sandwich to enjoy the next day! Everything we had was so delicious. The chicken was the right amount of spicy, it had a nice kick without being overwhelmingly hot. I liked the waffle fries a lot because they were thin and crispy, usually these are cut too thick and absorb too much oil when they're fried. Overall, I thought the food was really good. This place was soooo good! I had the southern style fried chicken! The Texas Toast was very tasty with the honey butter. I ordered some yummy Mac and cheese. We tried the cheese curds also. Everything was so yummy and the service was phenomenal. Dan was an excellent server. The restaurant had an eclectic feel to it that made our visit very nice and chill. It was decorated with chicken paraphernalia. The greatness of the restaurants is that they have a sister restaurant next door called The Crafty Cow. Granted this was during their opening week, but that is inexcusable for a small order. The chicken looks good per visual inspection, but once you bite in, it's jaw breaking. The batter was so thick and hard that we literally had to remove it to save our teeth. It also tasted more sweet than hot, so I'm guessing there was a lot of sugar in the batter that ended up caramelizing and therefore hardening. I had real Nashville hot chicken just weeks before this experience, so that was my point of reference. Our server was nice but I think there was only 2 servers working. we waited for probably 45 mins for the food. Sides came out like 10 min after chicken. The WORST part was when one of the huge wall decorations (a huge heavy iron faucet) literaly fell off the wall and hit one of guests in the head. He kept rubbing his head so i am assuming it kind of hurt! The guests at this table were blind and were like what hit me?! The manager did NOT handle this appropriately. I was horrified and mortified for them and was genuinely concerned the other things on the wall (swords, pitchforks) were going to fall off but no one else seemed that worried. We were like their 3rd table, so I chalk that up to some poor planning. We opted for the Cheddar Mac, and it was terrible. The pasta was so overcooked it was falling apart and I've had beer cheese soup with more body than their Mac. They need to work on that. Service was way too slow, even for the first day. I likely would not have came as it was hard to find a good review. Luckily, I was taken to this place without doing any research. The story goes like this. The burger store next door use to have a chicken night and it become so popular that they opened this place. You can pretty much order from either side as they now connect in the back by the restrooms. When you first walk in you will notice a modern design. I thought it was a pretty cool environment. Nothing to crazy. The service was pretty good. We were the only people in the restaurant as it was only about 11:15am. I will note that the food seemed to take about 35-40 min. This seems a little excessive but idk. My first thought was the fryer needed to warm up. As for the food. We decided to try the wings and the Nashville Hot chicken. Both were juicy and had excellent taste. If you like spicy food, the scorchin' dry rub on the wings was excellent. My friend even said, " that was the best wing I have ever had." I do not think I agree with his statement ( Tomkins has best wings) but I thought it was note worthy. This place is much much much better than the previous reviews. It opened last month and sometimes places take a little time to get into the swing of things. I recommend giving it a try. I know I will be back to try the Mac and Cheese and other chicken dishes. At 7:50 (25 min after ordering) we got fries first (50% of them greasy & undercooked)... at 8 we got our salad, which was decent, just decent. At 8:10 we got our Mac, which was runny, so runny that if you got a noodle on your fork chances were it was sans cheese (I suggest eating with a spoon)... at about 8:15 we got our chicken, which honestly had great flavor, but when you took one bite all the skin would fall off... it literally disintegrated... tasty flavor though I'll give them that. Our server was semi apologetic about how long everything took, but slightly abrasive at the same time... this coming from someone who spent 10 years as a server, so I try and be very forgiving and really just take account of what is going on around me... My boyfriend has been wanting to go here for a while now and I was skeptical... I just want to say they had some of the freshest and best tasting chicken I have ever had. We were greeted right away and told to sit wherever we'd like. The waitress came and took our order promptly- the food was brought out piping hot and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered for takeout, they said 15 minutes and ended up waiting over 30 minutes. If it's going to be over double what you said for whatever reason have the respect to come say something. To top it of 2 ok pub burgers were $24 with no sides. When we opened the container and saw no sides we could hardly believe the price tag. We definitely will NOT be back. read more

Definitely had a bad batch of chicken. The thigh was extremely bloody inside. Didn't really looked fully cooked. The sauce was extremely oily, the entire plate was coated in just oil. I have a newfound obsession with Nashville hot chicken. I've tried various restaurants in Madison and Milwaukee that have a version of it on the menu, but had yet to find a place around here who specialized in it. I asked around, and was told this was the best place in Milwaukee. I was expecting a hood type hole in the wall, based on the name and the specialty. Instead I got a mildly upscale hipster type place. Figuring out where to enter is confusing because at least some of the time, the entrance is closed and you enter through an adjoining restaurant. They also share menus and I assume the kitchen. Everything looked and smelled great so I got a lot of food. It was $25 for 8 pieces of chicken, $10 for a chicken sandwich, $4 for a side. Seems a little high for fried chicken but not outrageous. For the chicken, I got half Nashville hot, 1/4 Honey Butter, 1/4 Southern BBQ. The Nashville hot sandwich was my favorite part of the meal. The Nashville hot flavor was perfect, and the Chipotle mayo balanced in perfectly. For a side, I got mac & cheese. It was standard Bekcy mac & cheese. That's not necessarily a diss, I like Becky mac & cheese from Noodles & Co, for example, but know what you're getting. Noodles in cheese sauce. It was nothing special. The chicken was a HUGE disappointment. Again, the Nashville hot flavor was perfect. The honey butter flavor . . . honestly was not memorable, it was probably overshadowed by other issues, but we'll get to that. The southern BBQ . . . my server warned me that she didnt like it and it was a mustard based BBQ sauce, but I decided to try it anyways. It literally tasted like fried chicken tasted in yellow mustard. But the real issue, with ALL the chicken, is that the way it was cooked, the breaking would not stick to the chicken. If you picked up a piece of chicken, all the breading fell off, and you ended up with a naked piece of chicken and a pile of breading on your plate. I ate maybe one or two pieces total before giving up. It just wasnt edible unless I wanted plain chicken with no breading, sauce, or flavor. I'm so mad because I ended up tossing most of the chicken, and the flavor, at least of the Nashville, was REALLY good. I probably wont go back. It might be better next time, but I dont think I'm willing to risk it. read more

Holy crap, this chicken is good! That's the highest compliment that you can get from a black man. From the tangy hint of buttermilk to the breading that stays crunchy even after refrigeration, they created a formula for the perfect yard bird and boy, does it deliver in spades! I only wish that I could elaborate on my experience here but the flavor has left me speechless. I highly recommend the 4-pc meal. Oh...and Kool-Aid pickles?!?!?! The food and drinks were great, although it felt like this was the grand opening but no one knew.. including the employees. We went for brunch and there was nothing on the table other than forks and napkins, so we had to ask for butter, jam, creamer, sugar, hot sauce, etc. The waitress was very kind but very slow. To top it all off, one of my friends found a piece of paper attached to the cheese on her southern fried biscuits (picture attached). We were extremely impressed with Hot Head Fried Chicken!!! Since stopping in the first time two weeks ago we've been back three additional times. Great space, attentive staff who are passionate about the food, and absolutely amazing food. Where do I start....... Amazing chicken, fried green tomatoes to die for, grit cakes and shrimp, delicious burgers, I could go on. We've ordered so much off this menu and personally haven't had anything bad. This past Sunday we were there for brunch with family celebrating a birthday. The brunch was impressive. Unfortunately, so many places get brunch wrong but not this place. The icing on the cake was trying the Bloody Mary. I'm a bloody snob and I was blown away with the flavors of this bloody. This was our family first time here and they couldn't stop talking about it. Chicken was good, hot, and fresh! No problems there! Collard greens were OK. I don't like sweet collard greens. Being raised on southern cuisine myself, the level of traditional taste is important! One tip, keep the smoked meats, get rid of the sweet! That is all! read more

A strange version of fried chicken. Felt "broasted" (whatever that is), not fried. The chicken was soggy (not juicy). Curious what goes on in that kitchen. Also didn't get my biscuits. And the Mac and cheese was tasty but tiny. read more

I got chicken and waffles at Hot Head and it was so good! Service was okay but they were a bit understaffed for the size crowd they had.
