I was pretty skeptical about staying at a hostel in the US, but was convinced to give it a a shot based on the the reviews... but boy did I learn. this place is an absolute hell hole in an amazing city and state. I'll sum up my complaints below but the short version is : DO NOT STAY HERE I'll name a few positives first. They include free towels and sell the basic necessities any weary traveler would need. The facilities are generally very clean and kept up well. But besides the basic necessities you would expect in any reasonable accommodation, this place is an absolute shit show and the people that work here are incredibly unfriendly and rude to guests. 1). It's hard to tell who even works at this place and who doesn't. It's a mix of lazy workers who don't give a shit about their guests and shady folk and conmen who swarm the bar here like locusts, looking to pray upon tourists, especially international travelers. 2). They lock this place up like Alcatraz after 2 am. For reference, bars in Denver close at latest 2 am so you won't be able to make last call at any bar you visit or even see the end of any late night music sets you may be seeing. In fact, if you want to get a late night meal they will not let you out of this place. While confronting one of the workers about this, he told me to order Uber Eats or said if I left I wouldn't be able to get back in to sleep or access my belongings for the night. Not friendly folk and the fact that they charge what they do for people to stay here should be illegal. 3). The social scene at this place absolutely sucks. Besides a few friendly locals who used to frequent the bar here in what they consider the good ole days, there is nothing fun about this hostel. In fact you'd be lucky to find someone manning the bar at any point of the day. I genuinely feel bad for the people that work here. They are likely way underpaid and therefore only work here to do little to no work and get free lodging. Don't stay here like under any circumstance, even for a night... get a damn hotel room if you can. read more

Dude this place is awesome. I try to go into things with no expectations so I did with this and it completely exceeded my expectations. I had the most amazing stay at hostel fish. First time in Denver for Decadence NYE. As soon as I arrive the girls in my room made me feel so welcomed and we connected right away we just ended up all going to the festival together. So happy this place brought them to me . One side note the doors really do lock at 2 am so don't get stuck outside like us unless you've got someone to open the door. whoopsie. read more

I paid for two nights for a private room which I was charged $338,51 for. I called from the airport 45 minutes after I had made the reservation for a cheaper room but they told me no changes you have already paid. There was no heat in the room and early in the morning it was 38 degrees. The staff member, Matt, tried to fix it, but after looking at it, he admitted there was no heat and could only offer me two sheets. Matt was very nice and a good employee; otherwise, I would have given zero stars. I only stayed one night. The staff was nice but the manager that lays out the rules isn't logical and only available by email. He answer to me was no refunds, no changes and the staff could help you turn on the air. There was a baby air conditioner in the bathroom but I needed heat not air when it was 38 degrees. It was a lot of money for a room with no heat. I also had to clean up someone's straight black hair which was all over the bathroom floor. The manager is definitely behaving like a dog in heat for money. I didn't know you could rent a room without heat when the temp is 38 degrees. They could at least have a space heater on hand to give the customer. read more

Horrible experience booking with hostel fish I booked a stay but my flight got changed so I went online to change the dates of my stay there I thought everything went well till they call me the day of my old stay saying was I still going to make it then I explained what I did and still got charged for that stay without even being there I had proof that I changed it online as well so that's no way to treat a customer not even offered a other stay at all for the inconvenience it wasn't my fault they did not receive my change of dates so they just took my money like that no hospitality at all read more

My stay here was great. My roommates were awesome and it was great getting to know them and the price can't be beat. There was a kitchen that guests could use which made me save a bit on food and coffee. The bed was comfy and the curtain, light, fan, and outlets personal to each bed made it easy to turn in at night. I got an amazing night's sleep while here. I do have one complaint. I reserved a bed in a shared room with 8 beds for female travelers and there was one guest in the room who was male presenting and using a male name. I don't want to make assumptions about gender, but this unsettled me, especially as a survivor of sexual assault with some trust issues when it comes to men. He seemed cool, and I never felt unsafe, but I feel that the experience may have been been different if it were someone else. read more

I've only stayed at hostels in the states, but this one was one of my best experiences! With the Thursday night pub crawl, in-house bar, being literally attached to Ophelia's, there's almost NO way you can stay here and not meet other travelers. The showers were really legit & clean, which was great considering I did not plan on ending up in Denver & had no shower shoes. The staff was so accommodating and helpful - from keeping my important things safe to giving travel tips for hiking spots. Amazing experience, and I've gained some (hopefully!!!) life long friends from staying here. Will absolutely be back! read more

I would highly recommend this hostel. I walked up the stairs, and into a chill & welcoming atmosphere. The employees were very accommodating and helpful. During the day there is a wonderfully well lit common area where I found it a good space to check on emails and work before heading out on the town. I stayed 3 nights in total, and I met so many great people here, it was hard for me to say goodbye! I loved my stay here and will definitely be back. Thank you for the memories!! P.S. Returned and spent a Saturday night - did not disappoint. Everything I wrote an exact year ago still stands. One new thing, though - no more free drink ticket with check-in :( Update of previous review 3/28/2016: "I've stayed in several hostels, and all I can say is if this is your first hostel experience you will be spoiled. It's brand new, IMMACULATE (seriously, especially the bathrooms), and the employees were wonderful, professional and friendly. It's on the more expensive side for hostels (about $50 a night for the large bunk rooms), but honestly, it's worth it. Location is perfect, quick walk to 16th st. mall/capitol hill, as well as a few blocks to Coors Field and all of the hip bars on Larimer. I want to also state that the Wifi is some of the best I've used, wherever I was. This is super important to me! I stayed in Motorcycle, a 10-bed room on the first floor. Now for my experience apart from the business-side, the people I met were just amazing. I'm a single female traveling alone and I got nothing but respect and kindness. I always felt safe, welcome, and I basically got the entire womens room to myself ;) There's a balcony, a reading room upstairs, and the communal kitchen, bar, living room. I have stayed at many hostels throughout the world and after staying at this newly opened hostel (not even a year old) for 5 days, I can truly say this is one of the best "luxury" hostels in the world (and it is only $45/night). Please read on to find out why. I showed up on a Friday night around 9pm and walked into a beautiful 120-year-old historic building with a grand central staircase leading you right to the reception area. I waited for only a few moments and then Chad, the owner, showed up to check me in. He was so very pleasant and also quite apologetic for making me wait (and it wasn't even a long wait). Check-in was a breeze, he seemed to already be waiting for me to show up. He asked why I was visiting and I told him I was interested in some skiing. Chad was quite knowledgeable and gave me excellent info about catching a shuttle bus (Front Range Ski Bus) to two ski areas close by. He also handed me a green ticket and it was good for one FREE drink at the bar from 5-7pm, how welcoming! The first room I stayed in was the Doxie Doves room. Did you know that Doxie Doves is the vintage word for hookers? Wowsers. This is a beautifully decorated 9 bed room (3 x 3 tier bunk beds) with two comfy one person couches, and a memorable movie poster of Gerard Damiano's "Deep Throat." After I quickly settled in, I went downstairs to the bar to unwind with a beer. The bar offers many beers and also 2 draft selections. I ordered a Pinner Throwback IPA (brewed in Colorado). Chad presented me with an almost full glass of beer, but said it was the last of the keg and just gave it to me for FREE. Really?? That would never happen in NYC. The second room I stayed in was the Maps room. And this was my favorite, with the walls covered in maps from all the world and even one bed that has a pull-down map attached (which can also act as a curtain for some privacy). I asked to switch to a bottom bunk after 2 nights and got this room and all to myself for one of the nights! Sweet. The amenities on offer here are impeccable. They have thought of almost everything that a traveler may need. They have toiletries available and for a reasonable price. Munchies also for sell at the desk. Need a hair dryer? No problem, leave a $15 deposit and you can borrow one. Need ear plugs? They have them COMPLIMENTARY for guest. Currently there are no laundry services on-site but they have partnered with a local company and for $10/lb, you can have your laundry in a day or two. There is a nice clean kitchen area with a fridge to store your food. Just make sure you label your food. Also, free COFFEE on hand. There is also a nice lounging area to read and a piano available should you be in the mood to play some tunes. Bathrooms are clean with many toilet and shower stalls. I never had to wait to use the bathroom. Each room has many lockers for you to use, but be sure to bring your own lock (I didn't bring one and didn't lock my stuff up, but everything was safe). There is also a very beautiful patio space right behind the reception desk. I do highly recommend you take a peek out there. A nice place to relax and soak up some of the sun's rays. And my favorite thing in the hostel? It would have to be the ACTIVITIES board. Lots of good info about things going on in Denver and also small little notes for you to take with directions to getting to local coffee shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, and more. That came in handy when I needed to make a quick trip to the drugstore. The staff here are exceptional. So helpful and friendly. Tara was amazing and very knowledgeable. I could tell she really enjoyed working at this place. What a wonderful find and just a gem in Denver! Looking forward to telling everyone I know to stay here when in Denver and I'll be sure to visit again and stay here when I am in town! read more

Really cool new hostel located in the Lodo area, only blocks from Coors Field. The workers are very friendly and helpful. The rooms and bathrooms are both spotless, which is a rarity for hostels. Easy walking distance to numerous bars and restaurants. If you're ever passing through Denver and feel like saving a few bucks, be sure to check this place out. They also have private rooms, but those are pretty pricey. read more

Hostel fish is the sh!t. The place opened up just a couple weeks ago, I stayed for two nights and was not disappointed in any way. The rooms and utilities are immaculate (it did just open up, but looks like they take great care of the place). The beds are very comfortable even in the bunk rooms, and the whole place has a very friendly, safe vibe to it. Staff are awesome, they go the extra mile and how great suggestions. Location is totally ideal, many bars and Coors Field is in close proximity, As well as basically anything else downtown. It's actually only a couple small blocks away from the Greyhound bus station which is nice if you're heading to the airport. Because it just opened up, at the time of this writing they have a bar area that will be able to serve alcohol at some point once they get a liquor license (next couple of months). Decor in the place is very stylish and plays off the history of the location. If you partake in ganja, the generally have a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy (there is an upper level patio area where you can smoke and there's no open windows, in general just be respectful of other guests). Overall, this place rocks and looks like it's a lot better then the other local hostels. read more

I've been eyeing this hostel for a minute and finally got to stay here. Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. I stayed in the female 9-bed dorm. Pros - The room comes with lockers. - They have an elevator to the 2nd (reception) and 3rd floor (the rooms). - They have a bar - Lots of restaurants within walking distance - Union Station isn't too far of a walk - Lots of rail lines and bus stops within walking distance - The bed was comfy compared to a lot of hostel beds I've slept on - The female bathrooms are nice and kept clean for the most part - You are given a free towel during your stay Cons - Depending on your bed location, you may or may not have a bed lamp - Lacks a social vibe - The kitchen doesn't have a real stovetop. Just a portable 2-burner stove - They need 2 refrigerators. One isn't enough because the staff store their food items in the same fridge - Grocery stores are a bit of a walk (e.g. King Soopers) I noticed there were a number of older adults as guests. Not too common in American hostels. read more

I hesitated writing this for the longest time, but I did not enjoy my stay here. I didn't feel welcomed at all. I'm talking no eye contact from the workers and it seemed like my mere presence was a nuisance. I saw others being treated much more warmly and it stung. The hostel looks cool from the outside, but once you get past the stairs and front desk the vibe inside is...heavy? Foreboding?? I don't know how to explain it. The lack of basic courtesies really hurt my feelings as a person and a customer and the weird/negative vibe killed any expectation of a good time. I didn't get that "inclusive, cool Denver" vibe I thought I would. Is it because this place is primarily white and I'm not? I don't know, but it did cross my mind when I left. I saw in the comments other nonwhite guests didn't have a stellar experience either, so maybe I'm not too far off. Personally, I feel if a company has views/enforces behavior considered racist or biased or discriminatory, you shouldn't force them to change. Instead, it's just easier to take your business elsewhere and share your experience with others who have the same business practice. So here I am and there ya go. read more
