This place was probably our favorite meal during our week long trip in Rome! From previous pictures, it looks like the restaurant has been remodeled quite a bit with a brand new menu. We made a dinner reservation for 8 people and they were able to seat us promptly upon arriving. The restaurant snakes through room after room, and we ended up sitting in the back which was an interesting and fun environment as the walls and ceilings are filled with people's names and whatever else they wanted to write. Definitely not what we were expecting. Our waiter spoke English, who was incredibly attentive throughout the whole meal, was happy to explain the menu and any questions we had. After ordering, he brought out some complimentary freshly made mozzarella that was lightly fried. It was absolutely incredible and made for a perfect appetizer to our appetizers. Along with the house wine (real deal as the red had no bottle labels), we ordered a couple different appetizers such as melon and prosciutto, the artichoke, and a couple other things. For my entree I opted for the bistecca cooked medium and it was absolutely perfect. Simple yet full of flavor! It also came with a side of rosemary roasted potatoes that were out of this world. The pasta dishes as well were an absolute hit with everyone else at the table. We ordered every dessert and while all of them were incredible, the tiramisu ever so slightly took the lead. Probably the best tiramisu we had in Rome! They even brought out complementary chocolate chip biscotti and even some house made Lemonchello! Everything was absolutely incredible, from the service to the food. We cannot recommend this place enough and will be sure to visit every time we're back in Rome! read more

Tourist trap. The tip off is at the corner of Via Sebastiano Veniero and Via Leone IV where two Moroccan men will assault you with flyers for their restaurants. The battle is between Hostaria Dei Bastioni and Antiche Mura. If you are Asian, they will immediately greet you with, "Konnichiwa," regardless of your ethnic origins. It's easy to snicker at the calls but it's not so easy to shake these people off. They are relentless and really it is harmless marketing, quite comical even. We actually gave in due to exhaustion. The most genuine guy won and it helped that the restaurant was directly across the street. It looked decent enough. We sat outdoors enjoying the rare warm November sun. Service was quick and we sat next to all the other tourists. Hostaria Dei Bastioni has a special menu for 9 euro pp. Pizza or lasagne or tortellini or spaghetti with salad, drink, and ice cream or fruit salad. We chose the meat lasagne and tortellini with alfredo sauce. Both were surprisingly good. The lasagne was soft and creamy. The tortellini was perfectly al dente and cheesy. Serving portions are small but adequate. Dessert was a joke- the smallest scoop of brick hard frozen ice cream. I wouldn't even call it gelato. Frankly, I would have been happier at a pizzeria or some other place. For tourists who are not expecting much except to rest their feet and have food at their convenience, Hostaria Dei Bastioni is fine. If you are a super tourist, you will be ecstatic to know that Hostaria Dei Bastioni is endorsed by Rick Steves. His picture graces the flyer as well as the restaurant. Servire porzioni sono piccole ma adeguate. Dessert era uno scherzo, il più piccolo scoop di mattoni duri gelato ghiacciato. Non avrei neppure chiamarlo gelato. Francamente, sarei stato più felice in una pizzeria o qualche altro posto. Per i turisti che non si aspettano molto, tranne per riposare i piedi e hanno cibo a loro piacimento, Hostaria Dei Bastioni va bene. Fantastic lunch after an exhausting morning at the Vatican museum. We were exhausted and ready to sit and eat anything! Rick Steves had suggested this place, but without much detail, so we weren't sure what to expect. We sat inside, where we enjoyed the charming view of the open kitchen. We can testify that everything here is made fresh to order! We took the owners recommendations of specials, a fresh ravioli with walnut sauce (omg amazing!) and two off the menu - fettuccine with orange sauce (sounded bizarre but so, so yummy!) and a penne arrabiata that knocked our socks off. The tiramisu for dessert was declared "the only tiramisu I've ever really liked" by my husband and "delicious" by the picky teenager who'd never tried tiramisu before :). I have visited this restaurant several times and tried several different entrees. I really can't pick a favorite dish as they were all delicious. The lasagna was amazing but the ravioli is one of a kind....hard to find anywhere else. The owners really love what they do and are full of smiles and excellent service. read more

This was the worst dinner I have ever had. I cant understand how this place was noted in Rick Steves book. We came here a few nights ago for our last meal in Rome and boy was it lousy. The place seems unsanitary and they overcharge. We ordered a side of vegetables which were not prepared fresh (I saw the owner take them out of a container and heat them up in the back). My brother and I ordered a salad (10 euro each) - I paid the same price for an incredible salad earlier that day for lunch so I expected it to be semi similar. Nope, this salad was iceberg lettuce with nearly rotten tomatoes. Last, I decided to pay for the meal because I felt bad how crappy it was. And I see misc 6 euro on the bill. The owner charged us for 2 servings of fresh bread. Mind you - we asked for bread with our meal - not knowing he would charge us for 2 baskets when we only got one. I asked the owner and he said bread is extra, like any other restaurant in Italy - I have traveled for 4.5 weeks in Italy and never been charged for bread. He said he changed us two servings because it was a lot of bread. OK.. I highly recommend NOT going to this place, despite what Rick Steves unpaid intern wrote (honestly tho how did this get in the book). Went out of our way to look for this place after attending the Papal audience. Although it's quite a walk from St. Peter's Square, it is right at the corner going to the Vatican Museum. It's on a busy street but the food is definitely good, home made, and fresh! We tend to share dishes so we ordered mushroom stuffed ravioli, spaghetti alla vongole, risotto with seafood, and fettucine. I thought the fettucine with a hint of orange and was very good! The ravioli too was very tasty. The owners were very sweet and told us they've known Rick Steves for 27 years. Husband and wife team were very proud of their cooking and it shows. He said his wife makes the desserts every morning. If you're in the area, skip the touristy joints and come here. Will not disappoint. read more

Hostaria Dei Bastioni - At Hostaria dei Bastione - Italian Near Me - Rome, RM

This was our first night of our first stay in Rome, and a friend and I decided to go off a Rick Steves suggestion and try this restaurant. I would say it's just so-so. Definitely not the best Italian we've had during our adventures through Italy, but we were hungry and it got the job done. I had the fettuccini with orange creame sauce (based on other recommendations saying how good it was). I thought it was an interesting combination and ate all on my plate, but would probably never order again. My friend had the ravioli and also said it was just ok. We've had better quality meals that consisted of more and cost less during our stay in Italy. I would say if you are close and wanting a quick Italian meal, it's fine, but if you have the time maybe try somewhere else. read more

We wanted good pasta and found it here! We went based on Rick Steve's recommendation and were very happy with it; the owner is friendly and hard-working. We had fettuccine with orange tomato cream sauce (sounds strange but it's delicious), spinach-stuffed ravioli with walnut sauce, penne with spicy tomato sauce, and spaghetti with pepper & cheese (which had an olive oil sauce not red sauce), tiramisu, caprese, and a bottle of wine--it was all fresh and fantastic. A large group came in while were eating and they seemed to really enjoy their food as well. It was absolutely delicious and we would definitely come back again!! read more
