SO Disgusting. How they have a higher rating on google is crazy. My entire table got different things and none of us could eat it. The guanciale in my carbonara was literally black coal burnt and I don't know what's going on with the rest of it. When they asked how it was and I said I didn't like it they just took the dish. Didn't apologize didn't offer something else and didn't comp any of our meals. It was so bad we just starved. I honestly should have known when nobody was in there. And it's on the higher price side too which makes it even worse. Sorry but I'm not in the habit of wasting $100 on disgusting food at a place that doesn't care. Skip this place and go to Al Gran Sasso in the same neighborhood and thank me later. Don't let this place ruin your trip. read more

Recommended by a dear friend and chosen for our last night in Rome. Our party of hour showed up on a Wed at about 8:15pm. We were looked up and down by a man in charge then told we needed a reservation. The delivery of this statement was very rude. We did nothing to deserve such treatment. It was very clear that we were not welcome there. The hostility was palpable. Whoever the man is who is in charge of seating should not be customer facing because his poor attitude shed a very negative light on this restaurant. A true Italian friend of ours treated us to Pietro & Francisco's remarkable restaurant. Black Truffle on egg, Prosciutto, mozzarella, fresh basil & tomato, fried zucchini flowers, fried meat & potato balls. The food kept coming the Italian way. Then the Cheese & Pepper sauce & a Fresh Tomato & Ricotta Dish all over homemade pasta perfectly al dente. You can definitely taste & feel the love in this quaint truly authentic restaurant on a cobblestone narrow road where there's also outdoor romantic seating, where we sat. Next for dessert, already happily stuffed & struggling to finish two bottles of wine we were brought out a whole beautiful loaf of fresh apple crisp, lemon pie & homemade unsweetened naturally delish whipped cream & berries. Mmm! I wish I knew all of the dishes in Italian to recommend. Our friend & Peter ordered everything for us & we can't wait to come back! Very good food. The service is certainly not like service you get in the US and I don't say this to be critical, I simply say it so expectations are not set for something you will not get. Our dinner experience was really good. We did not have a reservation, yet we were seated immediately. The waiter was really good and efficient. The food was absolutely amazing. We had supper last night and lunch today. Two different experiences. I will talk about supper first. We had reservations for 4 @ 7:30pm. Amazing service by a young guy named Francesco. He made recommendations which were so good. He brought out complimentary artichokes. Yum. We had 2 bottles of this house wine, Sangiovese. We all tried different meals all outstanding. You wouldn't think a nice place like this is down what feels like an alley. The appetizer was caprese and the buffala cheese had just arrived 15 m before they opened (so he said). We enjoyed our supper. Lunch: we didn't have reservations. We arrived 1:30pm. They close from 3pm-7pm. The waiter was gruff and said "you will have to wait 10m, we are busy " ... so we were ok with this. We have waited longer in restaurant in USA before. Then another waiter (maybe the manager) comes and seats us--not even 1 minute later. Our waiter is ok... at times curt. You can tell he's busy... no time to chat and have a good time like Fransceso did. We are rushed through are meal. Very different than the night before. The food was good. We did notice the bread we were brought was not so good. 2 pieces of dried French bread and 2 crescent rolls. The 2 locals who were seated after us got 4 pieces of fresh soft French bread. This restaurant is really good when it comes to bucatini amatriciana, as my friend Dan Rinaldi, son of owner of Rinaldi al quirinale du rinaldi Antonio aka famed restaurant in milan- who recommended it to me said it would be, but they are SNOBBY here. I am a woman in her early 20s traveling alone in Italy, and never have I been treated with such rudeness buy the staff. They were so attentive to the families who were paying lots of money- as they were purchasing many dishes and wines- and clearly saw me as a lower price tag. This is not how service works I don't care if you are in America or Europe, you ought to treat everyone the same and serve them well. I even had to ask for a menu, water, bread, and had to basically beg the server to come over to take my order. And it was not that busy. At the end, I saw that the waiter brought a small tray of complementary desserts to a family, but they neglected to bring one to me. So I requested that they bring one and they snootily replied fine and brought one. Exactly, I think they should treat everyone the same and they obviously don't! Don't come here unless you're planning on spending a fortune, because otherwise they will not treat you well. I'm sure you can get better service, and just as good amatriciana. AVOID.............EXTREMELY DISHONEST, DON'T CARE ABOUT TOURIST BUSINESS We were celebrating a milestone birthday for my dear Mother and of the thousands of restaurants in Rome, we chose Hostaria Da Pietro because it served local food closeby, the reviews were good and it was recommended to us by the our hotel, the First Roma Arte. What you are about to read will be almost impossible to believe, but it happened and I owe it to the Yelp community to share because I don't want anyone else to pay for such a bewildering experience. Upon entering the restaurant the manager/owner, looked us up and down before asking if we are Italian and/or spoke Italian. Of the three of us, two of us speak fluent Italian. We were a well-dressed family out together to celebrate a special occasion and although his question seemed a bit discriminatory, we thought once we started speaking to him in Italian that everything would be ok. Upon being seated, he came over to take our order for drinks and appetizers and told us that the waiter would follow up with us for the rest of the meal. So with the owner-manager, we ordered two glasses of white wine to start and a few appetizers. He rolled his eyes at our choices and told us he would take care of us. Instead of two glasses of white wine, out came a full bottle and three completely different appetizers than those we ordered. When we brought it to the waiters attention, he assured us not to worry, that it was "gratis" that the youngish-manager-owner was "taking care of it". We then ordered a $30 bottle of Ripasso and placed the order for the rest of the meal with the waiter as instructed. Although we ordered a Ripasso, an Amarone arrived at the table and at this point my husband who's in the business was getting frustrated by these shady games. We once again brought it to the attention of the waiter that we did not order an Amarone and indicated the Ripasso we ordered. Of course a different Ripasso arrived. We were so worn down at this point with both the waiter and the owner just bringing whatever they wanted instead of what we requested that we decided to try to enjoy the night and just go with it. At one point the manager-owner came back to the room we were seated in and asked out loud for everyone to hear.......where we were from and we said, NY at which point he irreverently replied that NY was too much of a "casino" which in English translates to a madhouse and that "everyone's black, there are too many blacks". I honestly think this guy was on something because no one in a sober state of mind would behave so inappropriately. When the bill arrived, there was a $300 charge for the wine and a $15 charge for the appetizers. Once again we brought it to the attention of the waiter who was just a puppet for this guy's antics. He apologized, shrugged it off as an "honest mistake" and adjusted the price only for the wine. At this point it was just easier to pay the bill and leave, regretting that we chose this place over Life Ristorante or any other restaurant for that matter. We have traveled extensively, live and eat out in NYC 3-4x per week which is certainly not considered a gentle town. Needless to say, we have never been put in such an uncomfortable position during a meal. When you go out to dinner, especially on vacation you are there to relax and enjoy not be on-guard and stressed. It was a terrible way to end our last night in Rome. The irony is that they should be more respectful to the American tourists because as I looked around, two local guys behind us were sharing one steak, another local couple two pastas, it was the Americans that were spending the dollars in there and everywhere else in Rome. The food was decent and inside of the restaurant there were mostly locals sprinkled in with some tourists. I'm guessing they mistakenly figure the locals are more important and on this night it certainly showed. I promptly wrote our hotel and recommended that they take this restaurant off of their list of recommendations in an effort for them to preserve their 5-star reputation. read more

For the love of God... keep walking. On our first night in Rome, my friend and I picked this restaurant based off the reviews here on yelp. Actually breaking one of my rules for yelp usage... they need at least 10 reviews. However, we gave it a shot as all the reviews were so good. Maybe we hit them on a bad night... but it was obvious everyone around us was having a similar experience. In fact when returned to our hotel (Rome Cavalieri - Waldorf Astoria) we ran into a couple who was siting beside us at the restaurant, and they concurred with our assessment. Our first surprise was the location, it is hidden in a little ally street and most of the dining area is on this street, hardly wide enough for a tiny euro car to pass through. Inside the restaurant there are about 4 tables, seating about 16 snuggly, compared to the 3 tables in the street which each could hold 6-8 diners. I've had plenty good meal in 'hole in the wall' restaurants, so I was still willing to give it a go. I want to say, the staff was EXTREMELY friendly and attentive, if the review was based on them it would be 4, maybe even 5 stars. We ordered drinks, it was very hot so i skipped any alcohol and ordered still water and a coke light, my friend had a glass of red wine. The meal started off fairly well, I had the Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil salad and my friend had the Calamari. Both arrived quickly and were fresh. This was served with crusty soft bread along side the standard olive oil and balsamic vinegar. If the dinner had stopped there it would be a three star review... our mistake was ordering pasta in Italy. I can not believe how bad the pasta was! I really can't. I ordered ravioli with a cream and nut sauce, my friend ordered the pasta carbonara... nothing too extreme. They were both horrible, there really is no other word. My friend's pasta was one huge glob which needed a knife to separate in order to even taste it. My ravioli was cold and the sauce bland, the stuffing was just barely detectable in the chewy pasta. We made the choice to skip coffee and dessert and find it elsewhere. One additional nice feature was they brought fresh cherries to eat with the bill, so that was a nice service touch, but again it really can't make up for pasta this bad in Rome. I want to reiterate that the wait staff and their aide were great, very attentive and making jokes... but the pasta... oh how they boiled away that wonderful carb. As other prospective diners arrived near the restaurant looking at their phone, possibly for YELP reviews, I earnestly tried to give them looks to keep walking... much like this review. I had high hopes for this place based on the reviews and the recommendation of a local. The good news is I had the beef filet and it was the best I ever had. However, they were out of mozzarella at 8:30p at night (curious since locals eat so late) and they were also out of the dessert we wanted to try. My wife had the ravioli and it was so-so. (We took a cooking class the night before and the homemade ravioli we made was better in her opinion. Absolutely amazing in every way, shape, and form. We stumbled upon this place after people watching at the Spanish Steps at around 9:00 pm and we're seated immediately. Very charming and seemed to be full of locals. The service was impeccable and we were even given a complimentary dish (fresh tomatoes in some sort of vinaigrette). We ordered calamari as a starter and it came out quickly and was crisp, fresh, and flavorful (and not too salty). As for main courses, we ordered the tagliolini with black truffle (pictured below), the carpaccio with black truffle, and the scrambled eggs with black truffle- all of which were amazing. Fantastic hostaria where Roman cuisine is on full display. This spot is tucked away in the middle of a little side street close to the Spanish Steps. Order anything on the menu - you won't go wrong. We got there at 11:15pm, after the kitchen had closed, and with a little cajoling our waiter was kind enough to let us order pasta and some entrees. Food came out quick, and the rosso vino della casa was delicious. We went on a Friday night, and the place was bustling with a young, vibrant crowd. I showed up first with 3 members of the family and was turned away b/c I was told i did not make a reservation. Nowhere in does it say you need a reservation. This joint was mostly empty, as they just opened. So we left!! Shortly after, my wife and my daughter showed up to meet us at the restaurant that we just left. We tried this place because we wanted to get away from all of the tourist places. It's a small place off a side street frequented mainly by locals. For starters they have great house wines for 10 Euros per bottle or 6 Euros per half. The pasta was good - gnocchi was tasty. The Osso Bucco was tender and flavorful with a nice tomato sauce. They also gave us free appetizers (Zucchini flowers) and two types of dessert for free. Service was very friendly and attentive. read more

All around excellent! Very casual but with super service and excellent food. There were five of us as adults and one three year old child. We shared several dishes, including fried squash blossoms, rice balls, and Roman styled artichokes, as well as fettuccine bolognaise, linguine vongole, and spaghetti with black truffles, and also Osso buco and veal saltimbocca, topped off two house made desserts, an amaro and a moscato dessert wine, as well as an espresso. im giving this 5 stars because of the impeccable service we received... the food about 3.5 stars we came here based on a suggestion from our tour guide. we just came from pompeii, really tired and hungry... we had to wait a bit for a table but in the end it was worth it... our server would not let us leave... he literally kept coming back to give us FREE, and i mean FREE desserts, wine and more desserts! lol. since we were one of the last tables for dinner service, i believe they were just trying to get rid of the food that wasn't served. but hey free food is good stuff. lol. i would def recommend =) read more

On our first night in Rome, I asked the concierge from our hotel for a great, rustic, restaurant recommendation. She sent me to some fancy, overpriced, stuffy place that my wife and I immediately walked out of. We then wandered around and I saw a lot of people eating outside in an alley and thought - lets check that out. I'm so glad we did! Hostaria da Pietro is what we found. For 2 tourists on our honeymoon, we were pleasantly surprised that almost everyone eating here was Italian. We figured that was a good sign. Pietro was a funny character and even though we didn't speak much of the same language, he made us feel like friends and family. He got us a table and our server was amazing. He gave us great food recommendations and a few extras because it was our honeymoon. The prices were VERY reasonable and the food was great. It was exactly what we were looking for. We came back to our hotel and told them about it - hopefully we've taught our concierge from a 5 star hotel a little something. read more
