I was in Chamblee to see a movie and had an hour to kill. My date and I picked out this place and I'm so glad we went here. You can find Hopstix at 3404 Pierce Dr NE, Chamblee, GA 30341- this is about two blocks above the MARTA station and two blocks below the Chamblee courthouse when traveling north from the Chamblee MARTA station - you'll see a row of buildings to the West and railroad tracks to the East. There's some parking to one side be be warned that there's no turn-around so the further in you park the harder it can be to back-up. Alternatively there are free lots on either side of Pierce Dr - depending on the time of day there's plenty of parking, especially later in the day past business hours. At the corner there's the classic Himalayas Indian restaurant and the very good Bluetop Restaurant, plus Contrast Artisan Ales and Southbound within a half mile or so in either direction - you can make a day/night of it by hopping between multiple spots to really soak in Chamblee beer life. I've been coming to Hopstix pretty much since they opened, I believe I first sampled the food and beer during a Chamblee Festival and looked forward to visiting in person. Hopstix is the only Asian Brewpub that I know about in Atlanta - they make their beers both as an accompaniment to their Asian-fusion food, and also as great craft beer as a destination. They also have a full bar, which you'll see extends along the right side of the dining room and my preferred spot to sample. I tend to come by every few weeks to see what Andy Tan (head brewer) is concocting. I've been a bit hesitant in reviewing because I'd rather not make Hopstix too well known - I'd hate to fight for a seat, which all to often happens to great hidden gems. Most recently I attended their 4th Anniversary where they had food and beer specials and a DJ - quite the party and well attended. The restaurant itself is post-modern industrial chic, with concrete floors, plenty of wood surfaces and interesting artifacts on the walls - there's plenty of room both inside the dining room and at the bar (there's a separate room across from the main dining room) - there's also a fairly large patio. During 2020/21 with Covid they've limited food to pick-up only but early in 2021 started opening up the dining room again with the tables appropriately spaced. All the servers wear masks and there's plenty of sanitizer stocked about the place. The restaurant can become quite busy at times, especially during the weekend - I love that they serve craft beer at lunch during the week being a brewpub so frequent it a lot during the lull between lunch and dinner. As mentioned, this is an Asian-fusion restaurant that features many sushi-based tidbits along with a sushi/sashimi menu - the fish here is good and quite fresh. There are plenty of snacky-fried items to choose from, bowls with rice or alternatives and big salads. My favorite item on the menu though is the Ramen - this is made with big chucks of delicious fire-charred pork-belly (on a stick, bun thit nuong style) sitting on top. For the anniversary I tried this crazy basil roll that contained fish rainbow roll style - it was delicious and served with a wasabi ponzu. I've tried all the beer - the best and most interesting Andy serves up are the barrel aged wild ales (these are robust vinous lambic-style sour beers), I'm also a big fan of the Kung Fu Hops II - a delicious boozy Imperial Double IPA done in the New England style so super hazy. They also have one of the best original Japanese rice lagers made in Atlanta. The variety here, considering the smallish size of the brewing system, is amazing. Service here is quite good, but as mentioned I usually sit at the bar so have a good understanding of what to order. Even sitting outside the servers are very attentive and make sure your glasses are filled. This is perhaps my favorite Chamblee restaurant. read more

I was really pleasantly surprised at how well Hopstix does the nice mixed asian cuisine vibe. I went with a group and sat outside at a really nice patio. Most of their food offerings are raw fish or southeast asian inspired while not seeming pretentious like some other asian fusion restaurants can be. We went during their Tuna Thursdays, so they had a special bluefin tuna menu. I highly recommend the Toro don if you come on a thursday, it was amazing - a solid portion of fatty and fresh chopped tuna, with salmon roe and rice. The tuna nachos were also great and full of flavor, though some of the chips came a little stale. A couple next to us ordered the tuna kama which looked and smelled amazing, but sadly they are a limited item and sold out right before we ordered. They have a good selection of beer and drinks menu as well. Came back on Tuna Thursday (when they receive their tuna shipments and have specials) Below are a few new items I tried: Tuna Carpaccio ($16): Bluefin tuna, chutoro, loin, spring mix, and ponzu dressing. Let's Roll Out ($17): Aburi salmon belly, cucumber, avocado, spicy mayo, massage, unagi sauce, sesame seed. Torched Bluefin Tuna (5/oz): Receive 2-3 pieces of sashimi per ounce. The cut is about half an inch thick. All of the above were so tasty and come highly recommended. I personally preferred the Let's Roll Out versus the Kamikaze sushi roll. Bluefin tuna and salmon were fresh. In retrospect, I would pass on the ramen, Super Bowl and burger and definitely go for the raw items/sushi rolls. R and I first ate at Hopstix when it first opened, and didn't go back until last night. During our first visit, we thought it was very disorganized, and the food was ok. However, our visit last night was good, with the food being excellent but the service from one of the servers just being ok. We got to the restaurant at about 6 pm (on a Monday). We got the parking space in the free, small parking lot. The parking lot has angled parking, which normally indicates that the driving direction in the lot is one way; however, the far end of the parking lot is a dead end, and drivers must make a u-turn and drive back out going against the angle. If you park in this parking lot, make sure you look both ways before leaving the parking space. Customers have to walk past the outside patio in front of the restaurant to get to the front door entrance. The host at the station just inside the entrance will ask if you have reservations. Reservations are not always needed. We were able to get a table with any reservations. Our first server (we ended up having two) was nice, but she wasn't attentive or even aware of our needs. She knew the menu and could answer questions about the food, though. R and I had an overall good dining experience. We both ordered the chicken katsu curry (panko crusted chicken breast, Hopstix curry and jasmine rice). We were served our food by a different server about 15 minutes after we ordered. Our new server was a lot more attentive, because she said out loud when she served our food, "Oh, you don't have any utensils. I'll get you some now." She quickly returned with two plates, eating utensils (including chopsticks) and extra napkins. Meanwhile, our original server came back to check on us once, only because I asked her if I could get extra curry sauce a few minutes after getting our food, which she got for me, and there was no uncharge for that. The curry was slightly spicy, and piping hot. Included in the curry were big slices of onions and chunky carrots and potatoes. This meal was delicious and filling! No one came back to fill our water glasses. This restaurant is nice and open, including the dining areas and the kitchen. This business has a nice laid back vibe, and is a great place to come to meet with friends and enjoy a nice meal. I think the Hopstix name is also a fusion of Hops and Chopsticks. This place is a microbrewery and has lots of different craft beers. The meals are mainly Asian and Asian/Indonesian fusion, and most are reasonably priced. The menu is varied, with different appetizers, grilled items (vegetables, meats and seafood), raw seafood, sushi rolls, tacos, and many types of bowls. There are many gluten-free and vegetarian items on the menu. There is a second indoor dining area that wasn't being used when we were there. read more

Me and the ball and chain did takeout from Hopstix this past weekend. It was our first time there, having been recommended a number of times by a few friends. We were disappointed. We shared some skewers, apps, sushi, and a rice dish. The calamari was good, better than average, though the sweet chili sauce could have been from a bottle. The dumplings were bland and boring, with plain soy sauce as opposed to the soy & vinegar that's common. The skewers (short rib, snausage, and pork belly) were fine if not indistinguishable. The rice had a weird taste, as in, maybe cooked in a dirty pan? Still, it was basil fried rice and there was one, count'em people, one piece of fried basil. The biggest disappointment was the dynamite roll. At $17, it looked like the size of a basic, $10 buck, spicy tuna roll -- and it smelled fishy-- not fresh. Hopstix was hoppin when we picked up our food, maybe the atmosphere would have helped us have a better experience. Super affordable place with small plates that pack alot of flavor. The Tabata options are perfect if you'd like a small snack or want to try a few different items. My friends and I tried pork belly, chicken and lamb. All three were amazing. I always pair a couple tabata's with the Curry Fries. Which are savoy but not spicy. This place is known for their beer selections but I'm not a beer drinker so I go for the whiskey. Going along with the Asian fusion menu, they have a small selection of sake and Japanese whiskey. All of which are pretty reasonably priced. They also have a freshly made house Moscow Mule thats really good. The flavors are vivid and it tastes like a spiked ginger beer. A large selection of drinks available. I skipped drinks this time around. Steamed chicken dumplings: you can choose if you want steamed or fried. The flavor was a bit lacking, but the sauce helped make up for it. Let's roll out sushi: tasted very fresh and the flavor was on point. Even though the salmon was semi raw, it didn't have a weird texture. (This is coming from someone who typically doesn't enjoy any amount of raw sushi) Basil fried rice: would skip. Kinda bland and the chicken was dry. I've had the ramen from a previous visit and it was delicious - would probably opt for that instead of the rice. The Basics: Hopstix is an Asian Fusion restaurant/brewery located in Chamblee. The restaurant also is a brewery and the menu features grilled proteins and vegetables on a robata grill, sushi, a raw bar, and various other items including a burger and ramen. The restaurant has a simplistic interior with an exposed kitchen/ sushi bar. Hopstix also has an outdoor patio featuring about six large picnic tables. Reservations can be made on Opentable, but the patio is first come first served. Things I like: The food here was delicious and unique. I ordered the Kamikaze roll, which was delicious, and I also had some yellowtail and salmon sashimi from the raw bar. The fish was very fresh and just as good as some of the best sushi spots in town. I also liked the large selection of beer they brew here and we enjoyed the beer that we ordered. Things I didn't like: Nothing! I enjoyed my experience at Hopstix very much. My friends and I went here for one of our birthdays. The food was so delicious. I ordered the pork belly tacos, and they were SOOO GOOD. They use some sort of miso dressing on the tacos that is delicious. Their dark ale & light ale were both great, but I can't remember the name of either. Service was a little slow the night we went, but there were a lot of people, and it was the weekend, so it made since, and it didn't make our experience bad because we were enjoying sitting and talking. We started with beer and fries which were just ok. I'm not much of a beer drinker so I can't really judge that, but the fries weren't super seasoned. Thankfully Hopstix turned it around with the entrees. I had the super bowl and also tried some of the chicken katsu. Both were great - the raw fish in the bowl were super fresh and the pork belly had a great char, and the katsu was nice and crunchy with a delicious curry! Sort of a hipster place, but it's really really good and worth your money. I ate at the bar and got wings (1 pound was 9 wings), some grilled Bluefin Tuna and Short Rib, and a bowl of Chicken Basil Fried Rice. The wings were only spicy from sliced serrano pepper, but since their drink cups aren't very big, I only ate a few slices. The fish sauce gives them a unique flavor and they're good. The grill items were interesting! They're not big, and if you had an entire dinner off of it it would get expensive quick. That being said, the short rib was a solid, meaty, fatty cut and the bluefin tuna was some of the richest, steakiest tuna that I've ever eaten. Highly recommend at least trying the tuna. A bit of a split opinion on the rice. The additional chicken was not great, mostly because there wasn't much chicken in there. But the rice portion is huge and for 10 bucks, a steal. The chicken for 4.5 dollars wasn't a great deal, but holistically, that portion size for 14.50 was still well worth the money. Dark Asian Magic (D.A.M.) permeates the air at Chamblee's first brewpub and the first Asian fusion brewpub in Georgia. The D.A.M. cocktail is also a winner with tequila, lime, ginger syrup and Szechuan tincture. Established in February 2017, Owner Andy Tan and Executive Chef Dony Raymond deliver Indonesian inspired street fare and 20 beer taps that stir memories of beautiful fruits from Asia. Hopstix was live on Saturday night, and we loved being near the action but relished our spacious picnic table on the patio. An idyllic 76 degrees with a gentle breeze and the occasional train rumbling by on the tracks. A sweet Weimaraner's tail from the nearby table happily tapped my back as he waited for me to drop a piece of food. Sorry, pup. We started with the perfectly fried dumplings and the snapper carpaccio. Scallops wrapped in bacon came next (4 pieces/order) followed by more skewers (pork belly & short rib) from the robata grill. The Superbowl included glistening rice topped with sashimi, eel, grilled pork belly, scallion and an open quail egg just asking to be mixed in. I'm typically not big on Asian fusion and often feel that the higher price point is not worth the creative attempt at integrating flavors. I really wanted to like Hopstix...but, it was honestly a huge letdown. Service 1/5 at best. Not one greeting when I entered OR when I stood looking for a seat OR when I finally sat at the bar. It was several minutes before the bartender came over and still no greeting. Had to ask for a menu, had to wave him over to order. You get the point. I flagged down another bartender and ask for a cocktail menu (thinking I might order a cocktail and give them a second chance after the beerI laid the menu down on the bar when my food arrived and the bartender picked it up and left without asking if I wanted anything. The food and drink: 2/5. I tried one of their beers - meh. Not even really cold. The menu looked good - finally decided on the Hamachi crudo and the Kamikaze roll.....hamachi is one of my favorites but, this was honestly the worst I have ever had. Not very fresh and totally void of any yuzu. The roll was not much better, tiny pieces. It came with one little sliver of pickled ginger and a teeny tiny cup of soy. Value: 2/5. $43 plus tip. I really enjoyed Hopstix! There is quite a wait for a table on Saturday nights, but you can sit at the bar and order some drinks while waiting so that's fine. We got a flight of 4 beers, and my favorite was the Kung Fu one. It reminds me a lot of Tropicalia, which I love. Food: -Super Bowl: My favorite! Everything in here was so tasty and this is like a fusion poke bowl. You have to like raw fish though. I loved the sashimi, quail egg, greens/rice, and the sauce the most. I was surprised to see jelly fish in there because it's unique in a poke bowl. This bowl was really a surprise because of the large variety of items in it. I couldn't even name it all. -Sushi Corndog: This actually wasn't my favorite even though it is a popular item. It was good but I didn't think it was anything special. It had a kind of fishy flavor I guess from deep frying the seaweed and the spicy tuna is cooked so it's a different texture. I did like the batter and sauce/toppings though! -Robata Grill pork belly and beef: It's savory and melts in your mouth. It's really fatty. -Let's Roll Out roll: This was really good! It's primarily salmon so great for salmon lovers. I thought the flavors went really well together. Service was pretty slow, especially for the raw items. But there were far less chefs on the raw items than the cooked items. They were pretty backed up.
