Stumbled upon this place on our way home to Texas. So glad we found this place because this place has some of the best bbq we've ever had. The brisket was flavorful and tender, as were the ribs and chicken. The loaded potato with brisket hit the spot for me, even chopped up the brisket was so good. I had ribs with fries (hand cut) and baked beans..everything was exceptional...and I'm damn picky with ribs. Buddy had black n bleu burger that was terrific as well. Really great BBQ joint with a massive menu. Everything from all your traditional BBQ favorites to chicken fried steak. Love the look of the interior! The brisket salad was very good. I liked the mustard based sauce slightly more than the other, but both were great. This was during lunch so you ordered at the counter. The menu covers an entire wall, making it a bit hard to order unless you are a regular there. I believe in the evenings you order table side. My nephew and I made a trip to McGehee in November to take care of some family business. We ate at Hoots both nights we were in town. Hoots' BBQ and our service were just the best. We sat in the bar area both nights and the first night we had the BBQ beef brisket potato and the BBQ beef brisket salad. The homemade ranch dressing was best I have ever tasted. This meal was so good that we made reservations to come back on our second night. That night we ordered the sampler plate with onion rings along with a half rack of the ribs. Both the pulled pork and the beef brisket were so tender that they just melted in our mouths. Their homemade barbecue sauces were so delicious! The mustard sauce was my favorite! The ribs were so tender that the meat just fell off the bone. We knew they had been slow cooked for hours to be that tender. We stuffed ourselves both nights. This is truly some of the best barbecue we have ever had. The prices there were very reasonable too. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful too. This is an excellent place to eat. The owner is speaks of the restauranteurs life as a lifestyle choice. This says it all. If one is on committed to the lifestyle choice of running a restaurant, they shouldn't go in the business, per the owner. This is her philosophy, and it speaks volumes as evidence of the entrées delivered to us. Oysters on the half shell were of a good size, fresh and tasty. Husband said he was here many years ago so we stopped by as we were passing through. Parking is a little wonky but the dining area was great! Directions to walk straight to the back to order. Menu on wall by register. We had bbq spud and ribs. Both were very good. Certainly better than any bbq we've had in Memphis (and we've had all of them). The service was prompt and amazing as well. Hoot's has been on my must try BBQ restaurants for sometime now. We were visiting with a park ranger, telling him of our travel plans and he recommended we try it. So glad we were in the area! My BBQ beans and cole slaw were good, but typical of most BBQ restaurants. The only marginal item was the side of toast. It was a bit dry. We split pecan pie for dessert...delicious! It's in an old convenience store/ gas station. It's pretty big inside because of that. I worker inside told it also used be another restaurant before Hoots BBq. Anyway, it's pretty popular and is located right off the main highway. I got their bbq burger. This comes with burger patty and pulled pork on top of it along with yellow coleslaw, mustard sauce and mayonnaise. I was surprised at how good it was. This burger is the first of its kind for me. However, it was kind a expensive to eat here. I got a bbq burger, potato salad, banana pudding and a coke. This all costs $24. I could have gotten a bbq sandwich, fries and a coke all for $11 at Abe's BBQ in Clarksdale, MS. The bbq pork burger alone was $11.99. Anyway, I walked in for the first time and saw a sign that said "order at window". So, I went to the window and placed my order. She gave a number and I found a table. It took about 15 to 20 minutes for them to bring me my meal. I thought at first that they forget about me but they did finally bring me my lunch. read more

Here is the deal: they charged me $1.00 for a cup of water and didn't let me know in advance. When I returned the cup and wanted my money back the manager (owner?) told me they "had to charge for the cup" and "everyone charges for a cup" which of course is not true. He eventually came to the table and returned my money. He could have smoothed over the whole thing by saying "sure, no problem" and returning my money. The whole situation could have been completely avoided completely by letting me know they changed a dollar for a cup of water. The food was fine. Hoot's is the place to be in Mcgehee, Arkansas. With that said, get there early (4:30pm to 5:30pm for dinner) because it gets busy as the evening progresses. We regularly have family dinners here and have never been disappointed. The brisket nachos are everything! Add extra jalapeños for an even better kick. Other great choices are the brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. Add coleslaw! You won't regret it. The onion rings are the best. They're well seasoned and fried perfectly. If you're into baked potatoes, they're huge and seriously LOADED. You can also order one as an entree and add pulled pork or brisket. Note that the potatoes are usually only available after 5pm. It is worth mentioning that all of this fantastic food comes at a price. Four people can easily spend $100 or more here. But it's so worth it! Stopped here yesterday for the first time. Lovely place. Nice layout. Good service and good tasting BBQ. Above average. Great smoke flavor, tender and juicy. Had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich. Now for the reason for the 2 stars. I always have the slaw on the side. It is served here in a tiny container that is obviously pre-filled early in the day and NOT then refrigerated. It was spoiled! I did not notice it as such but as I ate I did observe that it was NOT clod as it should have been. I suffered for it all evening and night long. Still uncomfortable today. Being medically trained in biologics I recognized the symptoms. Fortunately, I had antibiotics on had so my symptoms were not severe. I suspect more than a few people's were that also after from the same batch. For this reason, I highly recommend that any one reading this NOT touch the little container of slaw if you, like me, do not want it on their sandwich. I doubt that Hoot's is going to change their practices even if they read this! read more
