We were referred to Jim's Cafe by several locals while in Greenville for the Tamale Festival. Their recommendation was spot on. We had the Western Omelette with hash browns and toast. The omelette was a very good sized portion and full of grilled vegetables. The hash browns were amazing, lightly crispy and very delicious!! The coffee was very good, not bitter or too strong. Open since 1930's in this charming college town. Old fashioned homey diner on the main drag in Starkville. Had an excellent breakfast and a friendly server. The place was full on a Wednesday. No thrilled about the Guns Are Welcome sign, but I focused on the food and ambience, not the politics of the owner. read more

Completely gross. Water stains on the walls and ceilings. It's dirty. The mold smell in the restroom is overwhelming and feels hard to breathe. But the giant beetle in my companion's greens took the cake. Their response? They need to check the cameras to see where the bug came from. The waitress was as horrified as we were but the older lady at the register was just mad we were making a deal out of it. I have to be honest. The only reason we came here is because Doe's Eat Place (open for dinner) was closed and it was the only place open that wasn't a chain (we want local). We were able to find a booth to sit. The waitress was right behind us taking our drink order. We ordered the sweet tea. The menu isn't too extensive and they had some specials that we didn't try. She said they are famous for their burgers so that's what we got. My SO got the Chili Slaw which is a patty topped with their homemade chili and slaw and it's served with homemade chips. I ordered the cheeseburger with their onion rings. I have the say that the waitress was right. The burger I got was amazing! The bread it's served on is fresh and has a ton of flavor and the patty was made with quality beef. I was disappointed in the onion rings. No taste at all. Too bad. My SO was disappointed in the chili. Said it took away from the flavors of the meat and bread. I tasted it. It wasn't good chili at all. But the homemade chips! They were good! Jim's is the quintessential small town diner, a perfect fit for a trip through the Mississippi Delta. It looks like nothing's changed in fifty years, right down to the male hen party at the big table in the back, and I don't have a problem with that. We got scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, grits, and biscuits and gravy. The only thing that wasn't top notch was the gravy, which was on the thin side and tasted more like milk than sausage drippings. But the biscuits are obviously home made, and the hash browns are really crispy and delicious. I asked for hot sauce, and the waitress asked "Do you want bottled or my own?" "Oh, yours" I answered, and boy was I glad! It's thicker than bottled sauce, a little smoky, a little sweet, and I walked out with a big bottle, adorably packaged in a repurposed wine bottle, of my own. I read in a review that they make their own jam, too, and I was kicking myself for not asking for some. I think our waitress was also an owner; she was very sweet and delighted we liked her sauce so much. Eating here is like stepping back to a simpler time, and I will definitely return when my KC-to-New Orleans trips take me through Greenville. read more

I ate here about 5 years ago and thought I'd reviewed it already but I guess not since I couldn't find a review. The place has been here forever...like 100 years or more or something like that. Very quaint, old and nostalgic. It would appear many a celebrity has eaten here as they've displayed pictures with actors/actresses, etc that have made movies here posing with ownership. Interesting to look at but let's get to the food. I had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich and it was good. The fries were homemade/hand-cut and they too, were quite good. The service...not so good. 2 waitresses and while they were kinda busy, you still expect a level of service even if its mediocre...it wasn't. My tea glass stood empty for most of my meal...waitress never checked, I had to flag her down. No ketchup on table...waitress dropped food off and left table not to return until I flagged her down for tea even though she she walked past my table several times...zero attention. Ketchup sorta goes hand in hand with fries but maybe not for her. ? Could've used another glass of tea but clearly that wasn't on her agenda. Never received my check so I went to counter to pay...that's when the attention came but in the form of a question, not how was everything but " do you want to leave a tip "? Not sure why but I did...but she didn't deserve it. Not one smile the entire time I was there. And...if memory serves me correctly, it was pretty much the same way the last time I ate there. It's amazing to me that places can stay in business for so long when they don't seem to care about the patrons experience. Perhaps had I been a celebrity I'd have gotten adequate condiments and beverage? lol Who knows. In closing...the parking lot is tiny, the food is good but the service stinks. read more

This Greenville cafe has been around as long as I can remember. My dad used to take my brother and me to Jim's for breakfast when we were little and we still like to carry on the tradition, even though Dad's been gone for 6 years. It's a little piece of the small town fabric that makes Greenville feel like home. While Jim's serves some wonderful lunch selections, breakfast is always a good time to go......drink your coffee, enjoy that homemade jelly they give you at the table, and watch/listen to the sweet little old men that come in just to visit and eat. This place looks like it hasn't changed a bit since 1950. I had the BLT with their homemade potato chips. Both were delicious. The chips were some of the best I've ever had. The BLT was like something your grandma would make: toasted white bread, mayo, iceberg, etc. It's one of the few spots in Greenville's little downtown that are still there. If you're black and you order food at this restaurant, you may not get your order and the owner does not care. Find someplace else to go that wants and appreciates your business because this place is not it. My brother visited this place on our trip to Greenville. We stayed at the hotel while he scouted out a place for us to eat. We were planning on meeting him there about 30 min later. However, he called us to let us know that his order never arrived, after waiting almost 25 minutes for eggs, sausage, bacon and grits. He noticed everyone around him got their order BEFORE him. He paid for his coffee and juice, then left and the owner (who was standing nearby) watched and didn't say a word. Needless to say, he called us and we went someplace else that was apparently listed in the Green Book. Perhaps the fact that he was the only person of color in the restaurant should have been a red flag. Anyway, black people, beware. read more

I really hate myself for this review. Mostly because I know that small places like this might get a good deal of their business from their profiles on sites like Yelp. But I can't be dishonest about my trip to Jim's, so hear me out. I really think we came on an off day. And I say this because of the actual food that came out to us because the service was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and full of interesting photos of memories of Greenville through the years. But the food on the morning we came in was pretty terrible. Yelper Mom enjoyed her meal, but I have to say, I was really, really disappointed. I ordered one of their breakfast plates that came with hash browns, eggs, bacon and a biscuit, vying for a side of gravy to go along with it. Our food came out pretty fast, but somehow mine came out cold and really bland, with exception to the hash browns. When they came out they were still hot, but definitely hard and overcooked, greasy and over-salted. The eggs were cooked well, but still, cold enough that the water in them formed a puddle on the plate. And, the gravy was not gravy. Instead, it was more like flour and water with a little bit of pepper added, coming out ice cold and entirely inedible. The biscuit was homemade but kind of hard and dense, so I really have to think that this was just an off day because it looked nothing like the delicious photos I saw here on Yelp. I still hate myself for this. BUT, folks listen. The hot sauce here is out of this world. Yelper Mom and I walked out of here with a giant bottle of it and we'll likely order more when we run out. AND, I will happily come back to give Jim's second chance. I really believe that this was just 'one of those days'. There's no way a place like this could have the reputation it has by serving the food I was served on this day. This is a "whole in the wall" cafe that is in a tired building but with the super friendly staff and tasty food it is worth a try. They make their own hot sauce and bottle it in old liquor bottles which can be purchased. (They make great gifts) read more

The walls are covered with unique artifacts from Greenville's past, and the friendly proprieter, Gus, is always glad to tell you about stories from the good old days (he's practically the town historian).
