Doe's, you were everything I'd hoped you would be. I love me some Doe's Eat Place. I have been to locations in Biloxi, Baton Rouge, and Monroe. Hell, I go to Doe's in Monroe every single time I am in Monroe. When I would profess my love for Doe's to my Mississippi friends they would always tell me: "you have to go to the Greenville location. It's the original". I figured they were right but also figured I would never be in Greenville since there are not many things to do there. But 2025 was the year that I finally made it here. We made a special stop on the way to Eureka Springs. It was everything I had hoped and I absolutely loved it. You must know that this is the original location and it is not fancy on the outside or the inside. Parking is mostly on the street and the neighborhood seems a wee bit sketchy. The building looks like an old house from the outside. Needless to say, the kids were skeptical and wondered why their dad drug them here. That continued when we walked in to the kitchen, walked through the other kitchen, and were seated in one of the rooms. One of the kids said: "I feel like I am dining at someone's house". Exactly. This place is famous! All skepticism was washed away when we got our food. A ribeye and fries for me and a fillet and fries for them to share. Both were perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and made this Doe's fan grin from ear to ear. It was a great meal I will remember forever. Was it cheap? Definitely not. For two entrees, a beer, and a tea, it was around $200 with a tip. Was it worth it to me? Hell yes. I freakin loved it. Is it worth a drive from New Orleans just to eat here? Probably not. Should you divert a road trip to eat here? Absolutely. By the way, service was exactly as you would expect. Super friendly and we were treated like regulars despite it being our first time. The sauce was so good, I could have bathed in it. It was like liquid lemon pepper. We dipped the garlic rolls into the sauce. So good. The steak was a 42-45 oz porterhouse that was the best steak I have even had. And I've been to some world famous steak restaurants. This blew Peter Lugers out of the water. Simply incredible. While staying overnight for work I sampled Does and was just blown away. From the moment you walk into the front door, which is in the kitchen btw, you're welcomed like your family and you belong. You simply feel like it's where you're supposed to be. Then that "slap ya mamma" kind a good food is served. I started with the salad. Any salad that comes in a wood bowl is legit. The Filet I had was cooked to perfection and incredibly tender. The fries are cooked in an iron skillet, which you walk by while being seated. This restaurant is what'd you'd expect at mommas house but she can cook the best steak of your life. It's really just a local steak house with a tiny menu in a dirty broken down old house. The prices do not match the decorum, it is a trap house.... The steak was good, but they are double priced, you are not paying for the overhead, there is hardly any - you are just paying. Service is hit and miss, our server missed. And omg it was with the drive for sure would do it aging tonight and then go to Ground Zero. afterwards!!!! Maybe even stay at the Shack-Up Inn!!!! Such a neat place to stay it's an old cotton gin they made rooms out the bins and the sharecroppers shacks are rooms as well!!! This place belongs in the Smithsonian next to Willie's guitar "Trigger", blues, or the Model T. There's just nothing else more genuine to it's roots than this. Take a step back in time as they serve up a big ole slice of Americana. Or rather, dinosaur cuts of perfectly cooked beef, novel delta tamales you'll want to order by the dozen, and a simple but satisfying salad like your grandma used to whip up. So the locals said we had to come and try this place out while we were in town. They warned us it's nothing crazy awesome but it's that hole in the wall that you have to say you went to. The menu isn't anything crazy but I can say try the tamales. They are good and worth at least one. The salad reminded me the old school home made quick dinner salad as a kid and it was good. Just ignore how much oil is on it, you will survive. I really enjoyed the tender cut of beef and it wasn't a small piece l. Lastly the service was great and everyone there was so friendly and nice. My coworker recommended as I am from out of state. It is Byob liquor or wine but they do sell bottled or canned beer and similar type drinks. We had the salads, shared a tamale order, chili, and cheese appetizer, then also shared the ribeye. It was huge and enough for 3 proper servings. Everything was delicious, steak cooked perfectly. Shrimp was very nice as well Salad was truly gross and disgusting. Nothing but lettuce, not even altogether very fresh (had to pick out and throw 3 leaves away), and it comes dressed... with something that tastes like pure salt. No acid balance. So horrible. I appreciate most learning about how in history folks would come through the rear portion and roll their four footed animals right alongside the side there. The food was great, really delicious. My steak was the best I ever had. We loved the shabby building. It definitely felt very authentic. Now for the bad: they don't give you a menu. You just have to know what to order or ask them what they have. This surely works in their favor because their prices are insane... extortionate is the first word that comes to mind. Shrimp baskets are $31 each. Side salads (though delicious) were very simple iceberg lettuce with a simple dressing (and small) and were an additional $7 each. Our 6-year-old daughter's spaghetti with tomato sauce (no meatballs) was $10. A half dozen hot tamales were $10 and they were tiny. My steak was $64. Yeah, it was huge and absolutely delicious, but come on... I ordered the second smallest steak they offered. Lastly, I used the men's room while we were there, and it was not a pleasant experience. The wall-mounted water heater was dripping on the floor and I had to stand in a pool of water, and there was a window hopper air conditioner in the window with an extension cord precariously daisy-chained above me. All I could think of was that cord falling into the pool of water and frying me as I was taking a leak. I'm not a snob, nor am I afraid of paying a premium for a good meal (and experience), but I can't understand how this place can be so popular and get away with these kinds of prices with a ramshackle dive-bar setting. Hot Tamale Trail - Stop #5/12 This is a place that I would not normally stop at, except it's on the "Tamale Trail". Tons of "character" which I really like, but this was too much... Dark, run down and dirty. I arrived prior to dinner service, but was able to order the tamales to go! (these were the most expensive tamales on the trail) Tamales wrapped in parchment paper, tied 3 to a bundle with string. Looked like they where machine made (very uniform). Very spicy, dense, and dry, served with crackers. Best part was eating them on the levee overlooking the Mississippi river nearby. Fantastic time there on a Thursday evening. Wait staff Tina and company (we sat by the ladies preparing the food) were fun to watch and converse with. All had been there 25+ years. We ordered the ribeye which was an excellent choice, very juicy and flavorful. After reading the reviews we brought our own red wine, it was perfection. Fries were marvelous too. I came at the recommendation of a friend that used to live in Greenville. There's a small parking lot and street parking available. The surrounding area doesn't look at that nice, but you'll be fine as long as you stay at the restaurant (it looks more like a house) and don't wander off. The decor inside was very unique to say the least. The food was pricey, but it was good. It was also very nice to experience good ol' Southern hospitality! I arrived pretty early at 6 pm and was seated right away. I wasn't given a menu as the lady taking my order just verbally told me what they served. I ordered their bone-in ribeye steak cooked medium rare and an order of shrimp, half broiled and half fried. *Bone-in Ribeye Steak* Make sure to bring your appetite! It was a big steak. It was a pretty good piece of meat without having to add any sauces. Man, that certainly hit the spot after having run the Mississippi River Marathon earlier in the morning! *Shrimp half broiled and half fried* To complete my surf and turf, these shrimp certainly fit the bill! Both versions were good, but if I had to choose, I would get the fried version. They were perfectly breaded and came with cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Keep in mind that this place will most likely be busy for dinner. The front waiting area was filled with hungry folks as I was leaving. Doe's Eat Place has been on my bucket list for some time. No longer, that has been checked off!! When I drove up, a Sheriff Deputy met me and had me park directly across from the front door of Doe's. He was very friendly, giving me advice about when I left, to go straight out and not to hang around. "At the end of this road, they are up to no good! " I appreciate Doe's employing him. I got seated right away and my waitress was super friendly. She explained the menu: 10 oz. Fillet 2 lb. bone in ribeye 3 lb. porterhouses Fried Shrimp Grilled Shrimp Tamales Salad Fresh cut French fries are served with all the above steaks. I chose the Ribeye, medium rare. Every bite was delicious!! The food again was very good, but you must go just to get the experience! Worth the trip to eat at this location. Old school all the way. Delicious steak with no bells and whistles. Arrived at 5pm to eat early before the crowds and the parking lot was already full. Don't think because it is off the beaten path and a rustic setting that you are going to get a bargain on great steak that competes with some of the finest steakhouses in America. My wife's filet was $44, but it was her birthday and this place consistently makes the top list of steakhouses in America. And the steak really is that good. The filet was huge by filet standards and it was cooked to perfection. Medium rare just like she likes it, tender and more flavorful than most filets. The location is rustic. It is in a neighborhood and parking is mostly on the street. There is off duty law enforcement directing traffic. When you enter you are in the kitchen and you are greeted by the steak chef. You go through a doorway to more of the kitchen and then into a room where there is seating. There are no menus. The waitress will tell you what they have. According to the large table of people sitting next to us who were finishing their meal, they do a good job with shrimp as well as their steaks. I tried the house salad ($5) and enjoyed their house dressing. I also tried their tamales ($6 for 3) and they were very good. Ever since Alton Brown did his Feasting On Asphalt-The Great River Road show and mentioned that tamales were a staple all along the river in Mississippi I have been wanting to try them. *** JBF America's Classic (2007) *** #2 *** I almost feel like I shouldn't be allowed to review Doe's because I don't eat red meat.. but I'm going to anyways, since that didn't stop me from stuffing myself silly and having a great time at Doe's last Friday night. After waking up at 5:30 am to catch a flight from LAX to DFW to LIT then driving 2.5 hours... we went straight to Doe's. This is the original Doe's Eat Place, and from what I've been told, the franchises can't hold a candle to the establishment that won the James Beard America's Classic Award in 2007 and that Anthony Bourdain recently proclaimed as "...batsh*t insane. In a good way." I'm told the secret is in the ovens, and that it's the reason that franchises are unable to replicate the Doe's steak. The menu includes hot tamales, homemade chili, garlic bread, house salad, french fries, fried shrimp and grilled shrimp along with their cuts of meat: ribeye, filet mignon, porterhouse, and sirloin. They also have spaghetti, but were sold out that night. I tried everything. Even though I don't eat red meat, I ate an entire tamale (they are small!) and took a bite of the porterhouse. Before you jump to conclusions about my hypocrisy, know that the only reason I don't eat red meat is because, well, I don't like it. So, when someone proclaims that they are eating the best steak ever, I'm going to try it just to make sure that I'm not missing out. I've tried the steak at many places, Mastro's and Lawry's included, and I have to say that Doe's was outstanding. I probably would have eaten more than a bite if I wasn't worried about being sick later that night, and that says a lot. As for the shrimp, both were good but the fried shrimp was better than the grilled... but when is that not the case? I threw some sardines on the house salad, making it even better. Everything was delicious.. the garlic bread, the french fries, the tamales... I don't have anything bad to say about anything here. Definitely come with a group so that you can order everything like we did, since everything is a must order. I love that it's BYO so even though it's not cheap to eat here, you save on liquor/wine. Bring your own corkscrew and glasses though! Doe's isn't located in the best part of town, nor is it upscale at all, nor should you expect the friendliest service.. imagine picnic tables and folding chairs and you've got the vibe.. which adds to its charm. We called in for a 8pm reservation for Saturday. The wait was about 20 minutes when we sat down for food. Took about 30 minutes to get water after placing our orders. Staff was courteous, albeit a bit tired and rushed. Upon walking in, you are welcomed to a blast of hot air from the oven. People with raw chunks of steak are walking in the kitchen. Walk through to enter the central seating area. Asked for some wine glasses, but they were dirty so we got a few more clean ones. I'd advise you to come early or bring your own since they were not very clean at all. The cups were brown, disgusting the lovely brown Mississippi water. The Prime Rib and Ribeye came with fries. The meat cut was good and soft and cooked to medium rare perfection. Flavor wise, the ribeye was better. It's about $50 per entree. This is my second time coming here and I think the first time (about 5 years ago) was the best. Ribeye was good, but not on par with your box chain restaurants. However, I would support locals and the price was decent. On the way out, a gentlemen thanked us for the wait. Come early to get better service, but Southern hospitality doesn't equate to faster service. Keep that in mind or you may be disappointed. read more

Well, we done done it. Doe's two nights in a row. So much fun. Quite an experience. If food dives are your thing, as they are ours, this oughta be on your list if you have yet to dine here. In the dictionary under "Dive, noun", the definition oughta simply read, "Doe's Eat Place, Greenville, MS". From the ramshackle exterior in a ramshackle neighborhood to the ramshackle interior with yellowed everything, to the table our first night that threatened to pitch everything on it to the unlevel floor on which it sat, to the foot-worn linoleum exposing bare sub-flooring at the end of the table where Aunt Florence has tossed the salad for decades, to ... well, you name it. Dive. Glorious dive. We were fortunate to visit when patronage was light, and we consequently enjoyed so many delightful conversations with the servers and cooks. Leslie, whose husband Joe mans the grill served us the first night and Pat the second. Everyone we spoke to in the kitchen was so gracious and pleasant. The first night we shared a rib eye. This is not your momma's ribeye from Piggly Wiggly. This bone-in ribeye weighed in at two and a half to three pounds. When asked how we wanted it cooked and we answered, "Rare", we were asked, "Regular rare or extra rare?". Hahaha, I'm glad we didn't ask for extra rare for as it was I think a good veterinarian could have resuscitated this cow we were served. I can't say this is the absolute best ribeye we've ever had, but it was delicious. Perfectly grilled and well worth forty-eight bucks. And we finished almost all of it. No small feat for two old timers. The fries are small batch fried in an iron skillet. They are very good and perfectly done, but I would not say "You gotta try these fries!" But you will get to as they come, I guess, with all the meals. We both enjoyed this very simple iceberg lettuce salad. I had it with the proffered additional anchovies, as I love anchovies. (You can share this little salad as you can every dish with no additional plate charge.) Last night we shared three tamales, as being from Texas we have been looking forward to sampling the Delta's version. The flavor of the filling was excellent but we missed the heavier masa coating typical in Texas. Tonight though we had three with the chili and cheese on top. Oh yeah! This rocked. You have to have this. Tonight we had the shrimp. The Secretary of the Interior had 12 fried and I had half and half. Fried/Grilled. Fried were perfect. A light and very crispy batter. And cooked to succulent perfection. The grilled were likewise cooked to perfection by Joe up front on the grill. For me, the lemon was just a little too overpowering, but the spices are excellent and the sauce demands to be sopped up with the grilled garlic butter bread. But lemme tell ya something. Unless you are 18 to 30 or so years old, or Hulk Hogan, or Andre the Giant (RIP), ...if you order salad, three tamales with chili and cheese, and 12 shrimp or the ribeye... you're taking food home. There portions are generous! You're gonna spend as much here for a meal as you would in a high end $$ to a $$$ restaurant in a large city. But it is well worth it, as far as I'm concerned, both for the food and the experience. We likely will never be back to Greenville, which makes me sad 'cause I'd love to see these lovely people and eat their food again.
