Was passing through Indianola with an appetite and looking for someplace local to eat at. I found an old service station that had been converted into a restaurant, not far from the BB King Museum. Under the awning where cars once entered are now picnic benches and the smell of gasoline has been replaced with BBQ smoke. Inside I discovered wholesome cooking with the soul of the delta. I tried the Buffalo fish with slaw and potato salad. My friend had the ribs, mashed potato and BBQ beans. The Buffalo fish has a darker and richer tasting flavor than cat fish that I really enjoyed. The meat on those ribs was so tender it could be sucked right off the bone. You won't go away disappointed if you stop at Betty's Place. read more

The entrance did not look like the place was well thought of and parking was a challenge but we went because the travel app said 5 stars... the app (Yelp) was right! We had the fried catfish because the ribs were sold out and it would be another 45 min for the next batch. Was darn near the best fried catfish I have ever had... didn't use any tarter sauce either... that is good eats in my book. This is the local's spot when passing through Indianola. When trying to decide what I would order, I asked the lady at the counter if she had any recommendations. She replied by saying, "everything here is good, my name's Betty!" She was right about both her name and the food. I ordered practically every side on the menu and they all ranged from above average to excellent in my opinion. Grab a table outside or take the food to go if you like. The fried catfish plate was huge and could feed two. The batter was crispy and light and didn't overwhelm the catfish. Small cute place, the man taking orders was fun and helpful. We orders the pulled pork sandwich and rib tips, along with baked beans and cole slaw. It was pretty good, I enjoyed the meal, but it wasn't the best ribs I've ever had. I like the baked beans, but the coleslaw had pickles in it which gave it an interesting flavor- just not my thing. Food came out quickly, people were kind, bathroom was a little scary but expected with a hole in the wall place. After a wonderful visit to B. B. King museum in Indianola, we were directed to Betty's Place after we asked for a "ribs" recommendation. Wow!! Perfectly smoked and cooked with a flavorful barbecue sauce. Sides were excellent. We had beans, fried okra, and coleslaw. All were great. So happy to have found this place right around the corner from the museum. And we learned that Betty cooked for B B King and his band when he was in Indianola. Awesome place!! When I moved to the Delta from Houston Texas, I was afraid that finding barbecue close to home may prove difficult. Boy, was I wrong..... This Neighborhood family diner is local downtown, culturally historical and staffed with friendly people that make you feel at home. I have since then moved but everytime I oass through or get remotely close to Indianola I stop in and grab a plate and extras to take home. I highly reccomend the barbecue you can't go wrong with the pulled pork ribs or rib tips. If that doesnt do it, Their fried fish and hamburgers are awesome and are competition worthy IMO and can hold a candle to any other eatery I have frequented. While recently traveling to the B.B. King Museum my boyfriend and I asked someone there where we could eat with the locals. Her response was, "Ms. Betty's." Well that sounded genuine enough...oh, and quite southern. This sweet girl told us that she'd call Ms. Betty and let her know that we were on our way. We asked for directions and she said head down to the tire shop, which is across the street from the police station and turn right on the corner. Well being from the SF Bay Area when one hears police station, we tend to think big buildings. Not the case... Anyway, we found Ms. Betty's and it was great. The business is operated by a husband and wife. The meal prices are all $7, with the exception of the chitterlings... I believe they were $7.50. No chitterlings for us, but the fried chicken was to die for!!! If I'm ever in the area again, I'll be back to see Ms. Betty. By the way, Indianola was a greet little town. I've only been there once and that was enough. Ms. Betty comes off rude and she was also yelling at her son (looked to be around 11/12) because of her mistake. The barbecue ribs I ordered were not done so I didn't eat them. She also mixed up two people's orders and instead of giving fresh food for their troubles, she swapped the plates out.
