OK, so I'm a sucker for seafood, but to be honest I really only knew about the place at the Ventura Harbor, and my last few times eating there were pretty sad. I was driving on the Boulevard and made a quick turn in here to finally try this place out. When I walked in I was greeted pretty quickly, which was nice because it wasn't in a pushy way. I told the young girl it was my first time to their restaurant and I was excited! :) I decided to order a kids' meal as I thought that was a good, safe bet. IT WAS SO GOOD! The fish was excellent, really really. I loved the decor of the restaurant, and the young girl came to check on me to see how my meal was. (My only MINUS from the meal is that they skimped on the french fries, but even though there weren't very many they were still pretty good too.) But let me repeat: THE FISH WAS excellent! Family business and the fish n chips are AMAZING!!! Huge pieces!! I love getting the bucket and impressing guests with all the Fish! Fried scallops are tasty too, fried calamari not my favorite since they use calamari strips not rings. Shrimp is always fresh too! I had the grilled southwest fish taco combo, very flavorful. This might be due to the fact that I came in on a busy day but. . . I ordered fried oysters based on the yelp photos and I didn't get as many oysters as in those pictures. Maybe it's by weight and you're never gonna get exactly the same number but, I got four. That didn't seem like very many. They tasted good. I also ordered a side of fries because the fried oysters are listed on the menu as an "appetizer" so they don't come with fries like the other fish 'n chips type choices. I saw some other patrons at a table with a basket full of fries so I kind of expected my side would be that size, but it was just a few fries on the same plate as the oysters. The fries were terrific. If I lived closer by maybe I'd give it a second chance. It's easy to find with lots of parking and it's nice inside. read more

On our way to SLO for a mini weekend away, we wanted to find a locals favorite and found HL&S and boy did it live up to the other reviews. The food was great and the staff very personable. After we ordered our food I hear someone else getting an order of Thresher Shark, how did I miss that on the menu?! It just means we'll have to stop back in for lunch on our way home Sunday. This is a wonderful family owned restaurant that serves many types of fish and other entrees. I love the fish here. It's always very fresh and tasty. I especially like the special marinate that the grilled fish comes with. My husband loves the fish and chips. The sides are very good. Not what I expected when I seen it was in the strip mall, but don't let that stop you from going, it has some great fresh fish and seafood and the service is wonderful! A very cute little place in Oxnard, found it through Yelp after searching the closest seafood place from our hotel. We ordered a few things: - Grilled salmon: A little bit on the bland side, but they do have a lot of condiments on the side so you can flavor it more. The side of fries and tomato basil rice is a good combination if you like carbs. The tomato basil rice is really like a Mexican rice. - Fish and chips: The fish in the fish and chips are so HUGE! There is a perfect amount of batter and the meat and batter sticks together really well. The food was yummy. I was first surprised because it's in a mini-mall and not at the ocean etc at all- but it was just as good as (gasp) Brophys- IMO. Fish & Chips with coleslaw & clam chowder, for about 1/3 of the price. And the employees are super friendly & helpful. A pleasant surprise in a nondescript strip mall. The five stars is based on the food and service alone. Though the atmosphere may not be fancy, the food sure tastes good! Our fish and chips were perfect, lightly battered as they should be. Obviously fresh and dialed in. The oysters were fresh as could be and had a pleasant briny freshness. Even the clam chowder was delicious. I was already full from the above and intended to take the chowder to go... but I ended up eating half of it before we got in the car...and the other half soon thereafter! This place is so good!! We come more frequently during lent and it never disappoints! The clam chowder is so good and always hot! I usually get the souper special which comes with a drink, clam chowder, 2 pieces of fish, fries and coleslaw (but I change this out) and get potato salad. So so good! read more
