My friend was reluctant to go in because she was expecting a "real" sit down restaurant...you walk up to the counter to order. Many choices on the menu. Couldn't decide, so I ordered grilled scallops and the crab cakes. Grilled scallops were nicely seasoned and grilled. Tender. I ordered tomato basil rice and coleslaw to go with. Rice was ordinary. Everything was cooked while waiting so it was very fresh . The breading was tasty (not over-salted) and light. As it turns out, I am now an addict and had to stop by on my way to Ventura yesterday. we were coincidently in town and decided to try this locale. we ordered a dozen of oysters, fish and chips, the clam chowder, a micheleda, and the cioppino. the michelada was ok. we could not finish the oysters because they did not look edible. they were huge and had a green tint to them. my fish and chips arrived way before his cioppino. I wanted to wait for him to eat so I did. His plate was taking too long so I asked for a to go box for my plate and asked for his to be made to go since it was still not out. By the time his meal arrived we were running really late for an appointment. We wanted oysters so I yelped it and Hook, Line & Sinker came up. The location isn't anything special. It's located in a strip mall, it's not glitzy but has a cool beach motif. They have a pretty extensive menu too, but we were on a mission for oysters. You order at a counter and they bring it out to you,no frills just good food. So we ordered one dozen oysters on the half shell, they were huge! We could barely finish them every one of them was plump and juicy and very fresh. Small delicious seafood restaurant. Space is open and clean. We called in our order because we were hungry and didn't want to wait (sometimes it takes a while for the food to be served). We ordered an order of 1 piece of fish n chips (fish piece portion is rather large) and a salmon plate with rice and steamed veggies. We got to the restaurant, paid for our food, sat down and not even 5 minutes later our food was served to the table. We were surprised to see our order of fish and chips because we only asked for one. We were told on Wednesdays they have a buy one get 1 free deal with the fish n chips. The salmon plate was very delicious. You can have plain white rice or a tomato basil rice. Steamed veggies have no added seasoning. The salmon has a seasoning that adds a lot of flavor to the fish. It's located in an old shopping center, so don't judge a book by it cover. Once your actually in the restaurant they have cute beachy-fishermen-decor which fits right in with their name and theme. So everything and anything seafood is what they offer on the menu here. I opted for their "famous fish and chips." I have to say that my seafood cravings are very sporadic, meaning if and when I have the rare cravings of seafood, I REALLY, really crave it. Maybe it this day wasn't the day, because I really didn't enjoy my halibut and fries. The batter wasn't quite crispy, more soggy and the quality just wasn't there for me. I ended up catching a few bites from my co-workers tacos, (should have gotten that instead.) for what you have to pay, I'd say it isn't worth it... It may be a hole in the wall, but I've been a loyal customer for over six years and this will always be my number one go-to. If you love oysters get them either fried or on the half shell. They're huge and delicious both ways. Fish tacos are beyond compare and their salsa is the best (make sure you grab some from the bar). CRAB LEGS!!! Oh my gosh golly are those terrific! They're fatter than your thumb and have a score down the center so they're easy to open. We check Yelp and Urban Spoon and settle on HL&S. This is when our perfect day at the beach went south. Strike 1. Crab legs were boiled, not steamed. Every time I picked one up, water came pouring out. My plate had an inch of standing water. Nothing grosser than watery, not juicy, meat. Strike 2. Yellow flavorless liquid substance served with crab legs was not butter. My first guess was antifreeze. Strike 3. The fish n' chips were biggest fakeout ever. It comes out steaming, with this fantastic crispy batter. I went in grinning for a crunchy mouthful, only to find it had zero flavor. ZERO. They have the full assortment of usual seasonings at every table, but even that didn't save my fishy friend. They get two stars because the fish that came out was HUGE and the menu has a good selection. Also, once peppered, the clam chowder was decent.
