    mushy Catfish Dinner

my food came undercooked and still has some pink mushy areas. I hope I don't get a tapeworm

I stopped by here last night for dinner. My wife and I had been to the Hook Fish & Chicken in Homewood and the food was great. Due to that and the fact that my father loves fish, I had wanted him to try it for Father's Day. This specific location is located right on Federal Street in the North Side. The inside consists of a couple of benches, a place to order and that's about it. It's a cash only business and due to that, the workers are well protected by glass which I presume is bullet proof. On this day I decided to call in my dinner order and so placed it right around 5 PM. Since I wanted my dad to try a bit of everything, I ordered a perch fish sandwich, a whiting fish sandwich, a perch and chicken meal, a catfish meal, a 6 piece chicken meal and then a side of hushpuppies. I was told that it would be ready in 15 minutes and whenever I asked the cost, was told $77. It ended up taking me about 1/2 hour to get to Hook Fish & Chicken with the cash and whenever I arrived my food was indeed ready. So about 5 minutes after I had arrived I was in my car and headed home. After opening up all of the food I realized that I had probably over ordered as it was a massive amount of food! Out of the fish, I really enjoyed both the perch and the catfish and thought that the whiting was just ok as it was somewhat fishy. My dad ended up enjoying all of it and even went back for more which I don't see too often! Then the chicken was excellent and the size of the tenders here is no joke. The hushpuppies were nicely fried and had a great crispy exterior and soft interior and the fries, while a bit soggy (likely due to the trip home), were also good. Lastly the Cole slaw was also good and my mom, who normally doesn't enjoy Cole slaw even had a second helping of it. Everything that is fried here ends up being dusted with their seasoning, which reminds me a bit of a salt and vinegar flavor, and so everything has a ton of flavor. By the time everyone was finished we still had a ton of food left which was nice as we then had lunch for the next day. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I thought that both their fish and their chicken was quite good and so we will definitely be back.

I ordered the 6 wing meal & it came with a side of coleslaw & fries . I also got a slice of sweet potato pie . I ordered my meal over the phone to avoid a long wait . 10/10, HIGHLY recommend

Its midnight.... where is my food?!

The delivery person left my food downstairs on a random table in the lobby.... apparently at 10:30. I get my food and its soggy I wish I could enjoy it bc their food is typically B O M B !! If you want this, go pick it up yourself and eat immediately. Lol

As long as you don't expect service with a smile, then this will be a good spot for you! I sampled the fried chicken wings, fried scallops, fried whiting filet, fried jumbo shrimps, and French fries. As I review this, I realize how calorically wrong this plate sounds but if you are going to indulge in seafood, this is where you want to be. And everything for me was a sample because the portions were so large that I wasn't able to finish any one thing. It made for great leftovers the next day, though. They sprinkle some dust on the fried seafood after it comes out the fryer but I wouldn't be able to tell you what it is. It looks like sawdust but has no taste and the "friendly" cashier ignored me when I asked him what he was sprinkling on my food. Even with his attitude, I still give this a 4 star experience. That says a lot... There is a take out only restaurant so unless you live in the area, be prepared to eat in your car...like I did.

6 wings, fries, slaw and bread

I don't know what kind of magic unicorn pixie dust they sprinkle on their food, but whatever it is, I can't get enough! After years of hearing a friend ask me if I've tried Hook Fish and Chicken yet, I could finally answer yes. And then I finally understood why she kept asking. I tried the combo featuring 6 whole wings, fries, slaw and bread. It was all just. So. Good. The bread (your basic white sliced) is placed on the bottom, like a cloud that any grease from the wings can soak in to. The wings and fries are packed into a styrofoam container and sprinkled with their infamous seasoning and then closed tightly with a rubber band placed around to keep all that goodness from spilling out. The menu is basic, just pick your fried food of choice (wings, tenders, fish, shrimp) and sides (even fried okra). My meal was $8. It is cash only and take out only with an ATM on site. You can call ahead but most orders are ready in ten minutes. Be warned, you will become an addict. "Why did I only get 6 wings?" I kept asking myself as I have been dreaming of those wings ever since.

Meaning you can go to any location in the country and expect the same ambiance, menu offerings, etc. I am a-ok with that because it's always been a lovely experience. It's got old-school, romantic decor vibes. Quite often you can expect live music (pianist, jazz, and so on). The service is exceptional. The food is amazing. Everything is cooked to perfection. Seasoned perfectly and if I am being honest, I never leave any food behind on my plate. They have a nice selection of drinks including mocktails. In a world of big-box, they stand out.

My son was with us and even though there is alcohol served here all of the patrons were kind and polite. No drunken riff raff. The dining area is set up like cafeteria seating where you just grab a table anywhere and eat. There are waiters who will also bring food/drinks to you and collect your dishes after you are done. We'd probably come back just for this convenience. But I can also see how Federal Galley could have a sports bar feel when a Bucco or Steeler game is going on nearby. That said, the food was just ok. Portions were huge, but the dishes were kind of basic with a ton of sauciness/goopiness. My burrito from Mijo had a ton of chicken but not much in terms of beans and rice and no veggies or garnishes. My wife got a huevos rancheros bowl that just had mountains of sauce; it filled her up, made her very thirsty, and made a huge mess. The kids cheese burger and fries from Triple S was just fine for my daughter but, again, basic.

But it turns out there's a great selection of dishes for everyone. The roasted half chicken with the incredible lingonberry sauce is one of my favorite dishes of all time. I think the waiter mentioned it was brined overnight for a few days, which makes it unbelievably juicy. The starters are phenomenal as well. They showcase so many unique flavors, textures, and combinations. One of our favorites was the steak tartare, and they had a scallop crudo special that was especially refreshing. If you can make a reservation, I highly recommend it. However, if you can't, they usually offer walk ins but in a separate bar dining area (mostly under red lights). One time we lined up a few minutes before opening, and there were at least 10 people ahead of us, but I think everyone still ended up getting seated. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and kind.
