They are known for big sandwiches which now includes fries and cole slaw. The sandwiches provided value to workers...who were looking for a place to feed themselves to keep their energy up for a long shift. When you sit at the bar and you can only imagine the workers that sat here to feed themselves with what little they had. They found a sandwich between two pieces of soft Italian bread with a good balance of meat, cheese, cole slaw and fries...think energy and value. The history here is real and intense. Would I rate this as a culinary destination? Not particularly but I would say it's a must see to be part of US history as the town righted itself and came to life. The sandwich? I had the pastrami with cole slaw, egg, fries and tomato on Italian bread. Remarkably, the sandwich was light...despite it sounding heavy. The cabbage and tomatoes bring a great balance to the sandwich which makes it messy and remarkably light. Be prepared to get messy..so eat fast! I am probably talking too much about the sandwich...just go try it. The food is probably a 3.5 but it gets the extra .5 for the amazing history there. The service was great...well educated on the product, accommodating in every way. If you are in Pittsburgh, this is a must try.

Between the long wait and the unfriendly attitude, the overall experience was disappointing from start to finish. I'm glad I can say I tried it, but once was enough. There are fairly limited options in the evenings, especially for desserts, so having this available is wonderful (and tasty). The interior is nicely decorated and everything seems to be meticulously cleaned and maintained. There is a wide variety of offerings. Lots of delicious and creative milkshake options, but they also sell chocolates and other sweet treats! The staff is friendly and efficient. Even when there are lines, they manage to keep things moving but not in a way that makes you feel rushed. The shakes are packed with flavor, a perfect consistency and overall, a wonderful treat. If you want a sweet treat while downtown, this is the place to go! especially if it is post theater or other event. Highly recommend a visit!

Working downtown, we needed something close by and landed at RedBeard's Sports Bar & Grill. The short walk through downtown Pittsburgh was interesting, but the weather was another story. Hot, humid, and muggy. By the time we arrived, the restaurant was busy and only outdoor seating was available. We took a table outside but asked if we could move indoors when something opened up. Our server, Lauren, was fantastic from start to finish. Friendly, attentive, and she made sure we were well taken care of. I let Jackson choose the appetizer and he knocked it out of the park with the mozzarella sticks. Crispy on the outside, loaded with gooey melted cheese on the inside, and paired with a very good marinara sauce. Definitely a strong start to the meal. Jackson and I quickly came to the same conclusion: air conditioning exists for a reason. Patio dining has its place, but a hot and humid Pittsburgh afternoon isn't it. Thankfully, we were able to move inside once a table became available. For my meal, I ordered the Reuben, one of my go-to sandwiches whenever I see it on a menu. RedBeard's version didn't disappoint. Plenty of corned beef, good flavor throughout, and everything worked well together. I requested my fries well-done with no seasoning, and they came out exactly the way I like them. Jackson went with the Inside-Out Grilled Cheese and was thrilled with his choice. Judging by how quickly it disappeared, I'd say it was a winner. I don't know when I'll find myself back in Pittsburgh, but I enjoyed both the restaurant and the downtown atmosphere. Sometimes it is a bit too lick like a club in there. Also perhaps they could add the octopus tacos to Tako Torta ! We visited for one last hoorah last weekend. The octopus wasn't on the menu but after checking with our waitress, they still had a few. We got both this one and then queso! I got chips for the queso since I don't do gluten and then corn tortillas with the tacos. The octopus was well cooked as usual. I had a frozen pain killer which was great. See you soon I hope!
