Crab cakes
Leland L.

Always come here when we are in Myrtle beach. It's one of the nicer restaurants in the area and the food and service are great! Star of the show this time for me was the she crab soup. I enjoyed the crab cakes as well (just wish they came with some greens or a veggie besides the corn) and the fish bites appetizer.

We were seated in a well temperature controlled enclosed patio. Our server was super sweet and appeared to be genuinely happy talking to us. My smoked Manhattan cocktail was really good. I got the Blacked Salmon, and subbed out the coconut rice for mashed potatoes due to allergies. She asked how I wanted it cooked, and I replied medium. Never had that option before. It came out how I expected, and the summer salsa on top was amazing. The asparagus was also good. Since everything was going so well, I decided to end my meal with a pecan tart that was served with maple ice cream. That dessert was a dream!! I would love to come back when I visit again.

BLACKENED SALMON

We came to this sea themed restaurant for a Birthday celebration. We started with some signature cocktails which were OK. Then we had the she crab soup, house salad, oysters and fish bites. The Fish bites and salad were delicious. They also served a complimentary cheese dip with chips(stale). For our entrees we tried the blackened salmon, catch of the Day(flaky white fish that I cannot recall the name of, lol), Aleppo crusted Tuna(they loved it), roasted chicken breast, and the Angry clams. For dessert, they brought a small birthday cake for the Birthday girl which was excellent, and we also shared the chocolate chip cookie skillet which was also delicious. They have a bakery there which explains the great sweets. Service was good as well.

Complimentary crackers and pimento cheese dip

Amazing seafood place with great drinks and food. Not touristy at all like a lot of other place you'll find by the beach. There was a bit of a wait but we were seated way quicker than expected. We were also allowed to order drinks at the bar and sit out on the patio while we waited. We were seated in the covered patio section, which was actually very nice because it was quieter and more intimate plus provided a great view of the sunset sky. The menu was diverse and included recommended wine pairings with each entree. They gave us complimentary crackers and pimento cheese dip which were delicious and such a unique starter item. We also ordered the oysters which tasted great and were reasonably priced at $2 each. The fish tasted fresh and clean, not greasy. The whole experience felt classy, but not overly stuffy. We loved it.

The place, the food and did I say the drinks were all wonderful. The service was good we sat with the owner's hubby and he made us laugh. Everybody stopped by and asked what they could do and the answer was build in Alabama. The inside was so pretty with clean restrooms. It had a bale shop in the back. Just love

Food is always good here, and the service is unmatched, we didn't have a reservation but were able to walk up and get a drink at the bar while we waited. We were quoted 30 mins but it was definitely shorter than that & we got to sit down and enjoy our meal, they offer complimentary pimento cheese & they have a gluten free option for bread as well. We all got Caesar salads with amazing protein added scallops were delectable. We also got the maple bacon & it was delicious. Like candy - I usually come here when I'm in town and I'll be back. The servers were very kind and helpful with any dietary restrictions & gorgeous decorations

Pineapple bread pudding with coconut icecream

Our waitress Antonia was wonderful. She greeted us warmly when we arrived and we had our drinks and starters in no time. Hubby liked the pimento cheese and crackers. It was nice to get this in lieu of bread, etc. The oysters were delicious. Fresh, large and delicious. I especially liked the grated horseradish. The tuna carpaccio was good a nice combo of sweet and savory. The stuffed flounder was delicious as was the accompanying asparagus and whipped potatoes. The Aleppo tuna was also delicious with coconut rice and asparagus. Both mains I would get again. The key lime pie was one of the best I've had and I love that it was a mini pie. We got four slices out of it, so we took half home. Hubby ate all the bread pudding and would have licked the bowl. I loved the coconut ice cream that came with it. We did not eat the celebratory confetti cake because we were so full but will enjoy it after dinner tomorrow. Lovely meal, great flavors, great server in a beautiful restaurant.

Flounder stuffed with crab

Outstanding!!! Incredible food with a atmosphere that's not stuffy. Very busy on a Saturday night but everyone was so friendly and didn't make us feel rushed. Waited 30 mins for a table for 4 at 6:30 pm, and it was worth the wait. Vibe is lively but not super loud. A good mix of a crowd - couples on date night, families with young kids, large birthday party groups. They have inside, outside and overflow seating in the bakery/bistro next door. Food: this was one of those rare scenarios where everything was delicious and complemented everything else so well. Ribeye steak and oysters à la Heidi were definitely standouts. Such a delicious and unique take on oysters Rockefeller. The heirloom tomato and burrata salad was perfectly summery, with juicy peaches and tomatoes with prosciutto that's crisped up like bacon. The desserts were very fun too, our server recommended the pineapple bread pudding ... it was incredible. The macaron ice cream sandwiches felt like a very elevated take on a regular cookie sandwich. All in all, excellent unique and inventive food... as well as staples (like steak and fish) cooked perfectly. Even my 4 year old ate everything (everyone knows they're the harshest food critics).

Crab Stuffed Flounder with roasted brussel sprouts and whipped potatoes

Food was amazing! Came for Happy Hour and an early dinner. Well worth the wait til 4pm. Really cool decor for the restaurant with jellyfish and rope lighting. Oysters on the half shell were fresh and tasted amazing. Had the crab stuffed flounder for dinner. The best I've had. This is the first time I've ever had this dish and they actually seasoned the flounder and didn't make the crab stuffing do all the work! Chef's kiss!!!

Bourbon bacon

Loved this restaurant! Wish we'd had time to dine here again on our trip. We came by later in the evening for some smaller bites as we didn't want a full meal. Service was great, iced tea was good, and the food was impressive! The decor and interior is lovely, modern and bougie, yet casual. We were served quickly and the server was on top of refills. We were served the complimentary crispy flatbread with pimiento cheese first. So good! The seasonings in the flatbread were delicious as was the pimiento cheese. We ordered the fish bites, bourbon bacon, and a side of mac and cheese. The fish bites were a substantial portion and tasted so fresh. The mac and cheese was creamy and rich, but so so good. The showstopper was the bourbon bacon! It was thick-cut and served hanging from a jellyfish contraption that had the neighboring tables looking!! The flavor was amazing! Would highly recommend this restaurant and would love to go here again!

Amazing restaurant. Had the bacon as an appetizer and you must order it. The crab cakes and crab soup were delicious and fresh. Very cool atmosphere.

Hook & Barrel Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Hook & Barrel

How is the outdoor seating? It's warm now so is there a lot of flies or mosquitoes?

There are fans outside. Yes, there are mosquitoes.

Is their seafood tower hot or cold?

Both.. Raw oysters , a selection of steamed local and varied seafoods like shrimp ,crab etc.. and she crab soup etc.. menu changes seasonally and day to day for fresh fish. Call ahead to verify what's available. This is a great place

Does anyone know what's in the pear martini on the specialty cocktail menu?

Here is some of the ingredients. It's not all but have fun. St-Germain is a French elderflower…

Hook and Barrel comes up on Yelp as offering free birthday dinner, Does anyone know if this is accurate? Thank you, the birthday girl!

No free dinner but a free dessert

Does Hook and Barrel accept cash?

Yes, ate there yesterday! Horrible food, nice server but very slow service! Would not recommend or return. Had Roasted chicken... slimy skin and chewy chicken! Cold mashed potatoes and undercooked Brussel sprouts!

Given their extensive wine, cocktail, and liquor menus, is it awkward to eat without alcohol there? For various reasons my husband and I don't generally drink, so just wondered.

Not awkward at all. I went there with my family and none of us drank alcohol. Our server offered drinks and when we declined, they were super chill about it.

Do they have a gluten free menu or gluten free indications on their menu?

I don't recall but the servers are SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about the menus, ingredients and any dietary restrictions that they would be able to easily guide you to the right choices.

Is this place open right now?

It was open back in February. You can call and make reservations it would probably be easier.

Are there vegetarian options?

Yes. Not too many but they do look good

Just wanted to ask anyone if they had an espresso or cappuccino here yet? Any good?

Sorry, I don't know. I didn't check on that.

Gluten free options?

I think so, but am not certain.

Does anyone know if they charge a Corkage fee if you bring your own wine?

$25 corkage fee per bottle, and the bottle cannot be one that's on the wine list. There's always an up-to-date wine list on the website (broken down by region) to check if your bottle is OK to bring. Corkage fee is the same, regardless of bottle…

Would this place be a definite no for kids or just a "they don't have a kids menu" type of place?

Yes they have a kids menu. Grilled chicken and fruit. Cheese pizza. Macaroni and cheese with fruit. Or fried shrimp and fries. My kids got the cheese pizza and loved it.

This is a place where the locals go for good food, company, at great prices and relaxing atmosphere.... a few of the locals shared this with us while we were there. It is a true sports bar with TVs showing different sporting events, and 2 pool tables, and a dart board as well as a casual seating for large parties and small as well as nice size bar. I've been to Bar 19 twelve for drinks before and have always been impressed by its modern decor,…read morelighted bar and excellent drink selection handled by professional bartenders. Since it was my father's last night in North Myrtle Beach until September I thought it would be a great place to have our last dinner together for a while. I dialed up my app and made a 7PM reservation for three. We pulled in about 6:50 and found a spot right in front of the restaurant...it was going to be a good night. We got inside and chose to sit indoors near the bar. My father likes to see people and I felt this would be a good spot to do this and it was. The restaurant was mid century modern in design, airy and uncluttered...we were seated in a booth - chair combo that was a rendition of that style. We looked at the drink menu and my father went for a glass of Pinot Noir, his friend went for a lemon drop martini and I went for a Heineken 00. The waitress couldn't be nicer and quickly brought us our drinks. The lemon drop was perfect and served in an ice cold steel martini glass while my father was quite happy with his California Pinot. We reviewed the food menu and decided to share two "tables"...the deviled eggs and the pimento cheese dip with home made pork rinds. Within a few minutes, four deviled eggs arrived dressed up with a slice of jalapeño and sprinkled with bacon bits. A large plate of fresh pork rinds with homemade pimento cheese came out simultaneously. The deviled eggs were excellent with just the right texture and not too moist...the bacon bits added another layer of flavor and the jalapeño gave it a nice kick, however, the pork rinds and pimento cheese stole the show. The rinds were light and fluffy with just the right amount of crunch and the pimento cheese was superb...very flavorful with nice chunks of pimento and grated cheese. My father was diving in on the cheese so fast it was tough to get some. His lady friend also commented on how good it was. Next came the mains. My father settled in the American Waygu Burger with hand cut fries, I went for the lamb rack with string beans and roasted fingerling potatoes and the lady went for the Arugula salad with candied pecans, Granny Smith apples , goat cheese and craisins. My lamb was excellent...medium rare with a nice flavorful crust with a hint of garlic and herbs. The potatoes were well roasted and tasty while the string beans were cooked correctly but a tad bland. The arugula salad was delicious with a nice citrus dressing that played well with the candied pecans and craisins...the smith apples was a nice contrast. My father in the other hand, ate way too much pimento cheese and rinds and as a result just picked in his fries, which were excellent...salted well, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. He ended up taking the burger home. Amazingly, when dessert was brought up he was all in. Although known for their "Butter Cake" we decided to share(and by share I mean my father had about 90% of it) the Triple Layer Chocolate Cake. Turns out it's as good as it sounds...intense chocolate flavor in a very moist cake with vanilla ice cream and homemade whipped cream on the side...top notch. Sadly, it was getting late and my father had an early plane to catch so we got the bill(more reasonable than I expected), tipped the excellent waitress and said our good nights. We made plans to come back in September...although I'll be back well before that...Bar 19 Twelve will be going on my rotation.

Since it was an off hour, the place was wide open and we chose a table outside to drink up that Myrtle Beach sun and sand. The inside is upscale beach modern with a nice size bar and lounge area...I bet it pops in season. We sat down and the friendly waitress took our drink orders...easy as we both just had club sodas. My wife was starving so she immediately began perusing both menus. We wanted to try a little bit of this a little bit of that so we end up ordering Four dishes. We ordered the lunchtime, chicken quesadillas, ceviche Rojo, Cammaron's Mojo de Ajo, and a chili lime chicken bowl(I asked for no rice as I'm watching carbs). We shared some small talk and took in the ocean views while waiting for the food to arrive. We noticed chairs and a stage and figured they must have live music here which would be really cool. The waitress confirmed. Our food arrived after about 15 minutes or so... Always assign freshly made food when we begin to dig in. My wife being Dominican knows empanadas and these were good but not great. A little heavy and doughy for me and chicken enchiladas are not our favorite. My wife tries to avoid eating red meat and a vegetarian option would've been nice. We then set our attention to the ceviche. It was out of this world, super fresh and seasoned correctly with fresh cilantro and a light vinegar dressing. It was one of the best and freshest tasting ceviche's I've ever had. My wife, who knows a good ceviche, agreed wholeheartedly. Next we moved on to the Camarones, which turned out to be the star of the show. Fresh large, jumbo shrimp cooked to perfection and covered with a delicious red tropical tasting sauce. The dish served with a little bit of rice in the middle and some bread surrounding it... Just enough to soak in that delicious gravy. we were so full we ended up taking the chili lime chicken home, which was great the next day, but it wouldn't be fair to review it since it was a day old. We were quite full and had places to be so we decide to skip dessert. Overall, it was a five star experience with a great wait staff, beautiful setting and tremendous food. I can't wait to go back in season and listen to some tunes.
