Mango cheesecake
Berneta A.

Honu Bakery is the go to for those last minute "oh no, I need a cake or dessert!" moments when every other bakery is already closed. Thankfully, they've got our backs until 7 PM. Their cakes are not just delicious but also fun sometimes shaped like animals or characters, making it almost too cute to eat (almost). Pretty sure the bakers here are Korean, and one thing I've noticed about their cakes aside from being ridiculously good is that they have a unique twist. If you're expecting a full-on cheesecake or Okinawan sweet potato cake, think again. Instead of being one dense block, they layer soft, airy chiffon cake with cream cheese or Okinawan sweet potato filling, making them lighter and way too easy to eat without feeling stuffed. But sometimes you do want that full non chiffon layered dessert so that is the only downside to this place. Favorites? Definitely the mango, blueberry, and strawberry cheesecakes, plus the Okinawan sweet potato cake they are all a must try. And let's not forget the adorable animal cupcakes. Too cute to eat... but obviously, I still do. The staff here? Just as sweet as the cakes. Super friendly, lighthearted, and their personalities match the good vibes of this place. Love it here!

I saw a post about Turtle bread and I had to go and find it! But I had never been to this location and I was hoping they had my favorite, biscotti toast! The shopping center is weird! I wasn't sure where I could drive. There was a security guard checking with people to see if they were shopping. It was weird. But I found the shop. Friendly greeting when I walked in. Got my biscotti toast and a Turtle bread. They have a lot of baked goods! Some really cute cupcakes, and some cool looking cakes too! It would be really hard to decide what to get. But I just inhaled that toast and then started on that Turtle. Both so good! Mahalo Honu!

Get their special Turtle Bread... if it runs out then go early the next day. This particular day we were just grabbing pastries for the kids on the way to the Bishop Museum.

Honu Bakery...ah, the place wears a Japanese mask, but lift the veil and you'll find it's only an imitation of Kyoto's elegance. Not truly Japanese, merely Japanese-inspired, a ghost of something greater. And yet, credit where it's due this little shop still outshines the bloated, sugar-drunk mediocrity of your standard American bakery. The espresso? Smooth, precise, a bitter kiss worth lingering on. The sponge cake? Light, decent, even charming but never sublime. Good, yes. Never great. The Okinawan manju sits packaged like a promise, but one knows instinctively it won't carry the quiet poetry of a Ginza patisserie. It's play-acting refinement in a land that often prefers excess. So what is Honu? A clever chameleon. Not the opera house of Japanese baking, but a respectable theater. A place where the performance is good enough to make you smile, even if it never quite touches your soul.

Turtle bread!

Swung by Honu Bakery in the Kam Shopping Center. Adorable decorated cupcakes adorned the window looking into the bakery. Picked up the famous Honu (turtle) bread to share with family. 4/5 stars. Also picked up a slice of the strawberry shortcake and a meringue pie. The strawberry shortcake was unremarkable. Strawberries did not taste fresh. Whipped frosting and filling were plain tasting. Unfortunately, this is not a rebuy item. 2/5 stars. The meringue pie is light and more like a flaky crust type pastry. 3/5 stars. I decided not to purchase the decorated cupcakes because of the amount of frosting. I forgot to take pictures of the cupcakes. The cupcakes are beautiful for birthday celebrations and special occasions! Service here is fast and friendly here.

Honu Bakery has two locations. I typically go to the one they had in south king street but since I was near I decided to come here with my partner. The service process is pretty straight forward (similar to other bakeries). You go in, grab a tray and pick up the items you'd like, you'd then eventually end up at the counter where you'd checkout. They're known for their turtle bread, which is like a whipped cream mixed with chestnuts and raisins in between sweet roll buns that has almonds on top. We got the small/personal size. We also got the ube crème puff and the egg tart. Everything was good. I never cared too much for their signature item(turtle bread) but it's still good regardless. Their egg tart was super unique, unlike any other egg tarts i've had before. Their filling was a lot more sweet and custardy than eggy. The crust was also not flaky but more like a sweet pie crust. The ube crème puff was very good, FILLED with ube crème and definitely hit the spot. Most of their pastry options weren't as unique but they had all the basics.

I've been here a handful of times, but this last time I went I was really disappointed. I decided to take my cousins and my nephews to go get Boba and they all requested for this place over infinitea. Supposedly, they come here after school and get snacks and Boba however upon ordering the girl who was taking our order, asked another coworker If there was still Boba pearls available when they confirm that there was that same girl that checked offered to make the drinks. As she was making the drinks, the girl who rung us up, noticed that she did not start off by making them correct and they went back-and-forth for a bit in front of us. I believe for professional reasons there is a time and a place and it was a bit awkward because at that moment I was unsure if our drinks were gonna come out right. The girl who was making the drinks seemed like she was out of uniform she had very exposing midriff shirt and not proper shoes when working in the food industry, I am all for expressing yourself through clothes, but just seemed like it was not appropriate for this company. My cousins had expressed that they would like to work here, but I highly suggested that they shouldn't based on how the coworkers interact with each other. When we received our drinks, everyone had seemed happy with what they got, the only downfall with the drinks was the pearls, some were chewy and some were too hard to chew into. I'm all for my family coming back here, but I wouldn't come back myself.

8.5" Fresh Cream Cake

I preordered Tuesday for Friday pick up. I parked, walked in, waited for the one person ahead of me, and maybe two minutes later walked out with my cake and got in my car--all took less than 5min. I was pleasantly surprised bc then I had a drive into Ewa. The cake was perfectly light, not too sweet, and elegant for our celebration of a 60th birthday. It totally beats the usual go-to cakes from Safeway if you want something different and dele. Based on this experience, I would highly recommend this bakery for your cake needs and probably will do business another time.

I was shopping in Kam Shopping Center when I passed the big windows of this bakery. I stopped to admire all of the beautiful cupcakes through the window. I decided I'd go in and check out the baked goods to see if anything caught my eye. There were many different pastries but I ended up choosing the turtle bread for my grandma, pumpkin manju, and marbled bread. Everything was a little on the pricey side but the bakery looked so nice and fancy. My grandma enjoyed the turtle bread and pumpkin manju. She said it wasn't too sweet which you know, is the perfect compliment from an old asian woman! I had the marbled bread and it was delicious! It wasn't too sweet which is probably why I finished it that same day! If I'm in the area, I'll be back to try their other baked goods!

A slice of heaven: Purple sweet potato mango, and strawberry shortcake treats.
Rosanna T.

This bake shop is such a treat for me and my friends. We love the quality and beauty of all their desserts. This is where we grab our birthday cakes or "just because" the ladies are having a get-together. My friend's favorite is the purple sweet potato cake. Mango cake is also a contender. The service is fast. The place is clean and just makes you want to buy everything out there on their display.

Was looking for dessert in the area in the afternoon. Found this bakery. It was not crowded. It's not really a place where you dine in but there was a spot at the counter where few stools were present and one could eat. Got the blueberry cheesecake. Since it's a Japanese style cheesecake, its base was chiffon. It was light, not that sweet, unlike most cheesecakes we are used to. Not a fan of these nondense cheesecakes. Would give it a 3/5.

They have beautiful displays of fancy desserts and on shelves cookies and Madeleines. I picked a few fruity desserts to try macarons, lemon tart, mango pudding, tropical fromage. I wanted to get their fruit tart but the fruit on top looked dry and not as pretty and glossy. My favorite was the tropical fromage which was light and airy with a really nice fruit flavor. The mango panna cotta was my second favorite which included the mango bits on top - a nice touch - and the cream nice and rich. Lemon tart had an odd taste to it. Should have went with the mush peach tart that didn't look as appetizing but probably better. The macarons were my least favorite especially the yuzu and passion fruit flavors that didn't taste anything like those fruits. For $2.50 I wish they were better and not as dry. I am glad I tried them but the prices were a bit much for me.

You see, last Christmas I gave you my heart and the very next day, you gave it away. This year, to save me from tears........no, no. This never happened to me but Wham's "Last Christmas" which was written by George Michael, is overly played during the holidays in Japan. On a serious note, last Christmas I was jonesing for a yule log. I saw posts on IG and when I attempted to order one at a bakery on S King St, I was advised it was too late. At a Japanese themed bakery I was offered the option of a Christmas cake but wasn't in a mood for strawberry shortcake. I was on a mission. I recall attending a Christmas dinner at my cousin's a few years back where someone brought Yule logs and found that they were from Elvin's Bakery (EB). I also did a search on EB's photo gallery and saw one posted so I gave them a call. Placing an order via telephone was literally a piece of cake. It was confirmed to a tee and was also advised their closing on Christmas Day so pick up would be on Christmas Eve. I made payment over the phone. All done. The Yule log was a hit at Christmas dinner where it was visually stunning and tasty. It was not overly sweet nor dry. Well executed and decorated beautifully. So why not 5-stars? Picking it up was a shocker when the Yule log was placed in a cake box that clearly was meant for a 1/2 sheet cake (?) size so you had to be extra careful when transporting and storing. There was no support nor fillers in the box for the quite empty box as the Yule log was not meant for the box provided. In closing, I'm grateful EB came through with an amazing dessert for our holiday dinner but was caught off guard with their boxing. I'll need to think twice about ordering a Yule log again from them and will definitely order earlier and seek the options on Oahu before deciding on where to go.

When you enter, you'll see some indoor seating, the coffee prep area and a display case of some of their cakes. It's a cozy spot but clean and white. My most recent visit was to pick up a birthday cake for a friend. He's been talking about it so I figured it would be something nice to surprise him with. Hopefully he enjoys the surprise and is able to share the cake with all his loved ones. Due to the holidays, Lady M is busy and sells out so preordering is best. I was just extremely lucky they had a Signature cake available the day I called. The person on the phone took down my info and asked what time I was going to pick up the cake then put it on the side for me. Unfortunately, they don't hand write Happy Birthday on the cake but they did provide me a complimentary Happy Birthday cake topper which was nice. Overall great cake option for any occasion.
