This is the absolute worst Chinese American food I have ever had. It actually pains me to drag an Asian business but this is careless, flavourless, and the antithesis of what Asian families would even serve to their pets, let alone customers. When you open the containers and each meal is khaki/beige coloured, you know it's going to be awful. Unfortunately for us, it was worse than awful. We occasionally order when we really need something to eat that isn't fast food, I always use my Chinese condiments to re-cook the food to have actual flavour. This time we didn't have the time. My god... we took a few bites and just threw it all away. I'm very confused how this is still in Maverick Square. This food is straight up gross. A mall's food court Panda Express is more "legit" and definitely more flavourful. This is lazy. read more

Me and a friend were in the area looking for some place to eat and this location was at the most convenient place possible. The lady at the counter was super nice and our food only took around 15 minutes to arrive? We ordered two entrees and two appetizers, Gen Gao's Chicken and the Beef Broccoli Rice Plate along with the Teriyaki Chicken and the Crab Rangoon. Both were really good, everything hit our expectations and then some. Nothing was dry or spoiled. Got a combo plate: The beef and broccoli was blander than the cream of wheat served at an old folks home. Also, it had carrots, water chestnuts, and mushrooms in it. Had I known that, I would have told them not to put that crap in. Perhaps they were trying to make it "pretty" for presentation purposes, but it is a divey little joint in a wicked divey neighborhood. Seriously? Really run of the mill Americana Asian food, complete with the Pad Thai and the fortune cookie. Kitchen is open and they are pretty fast, and their combo menus are reasonably priced especially given the amount of food they give you. The General Gao's chicken was pretty mediocre - their sauces are very runny/watery and as a result the deep friend chicken bits were pretty soggy by the time I got my takeout. Boneless barbeque ribs range from ok to rock hard stale, and the pork fried rice that's in every dish they have tastes a bit old sometimes. The lady who took my order was extremely friendly. She read me my order back 3x just to be sure it was correct. The food was done fairly quickly. It was fresh, delicious, and with hearty portions of everything I ordered. The meat was tender and fell apart in my mouth. It was tough or dried out at all. The seasoning weren't over powering and the rice was cooked just right. The chicken finger were cooked just right as well. They batter was light and had perfect crunch the chicken wasn't overcooked at all. The best Chinese food I've had in a long time, possibly the best I've had in the Boston area by far! Opened the bag and asked for extra folks because we had just moved into our apartment, everything was packed. The woman acted like I was trying to steal her folks. It truly shocks me that there are this many bad reviews. I grew up on the same block as this place and it has always been with me. My old man would come home late from work, exhausted out of his mind, and in his hand, the classic order I grew up on. What's now labeled as a D6 with fried rice, boneless spare ribs, chicken wings, and beef teriyaki. My first Chinese food experience was with these guys and now they instantly recognize our voices over the phone. The unassuming and cramped little place in Eastie makes delicious scally cakes: crispy and filled with plenty of scallions, surprisingly un-oily, and cheap as hell. A shame that most other things here are bland: Szechuan and Yu-Hsiang chicken that both taste of celery and peanuts but no spice at all, egg drop soup that is so watery you can see right through it, tough and flavorless pork in lo mein slimy with grease. I maintain that Teriyaki Yummy in Chelsea is better, despite its cringe-worthy name. Oddly, HKH includes stale white dinner rolls and applesauce with every meal, a gesture that, if bizarre, is kind of nice. So. Stay for the scally cakes, go elsewhere for dinner. read more

I was utterly disappointed, so I decided to damn the reviews and try it myself one night on my way home from work. I only ordered appetizers: chicken fingers, crab rangood and beef terriyaki. I can't attest to their entrees. It was all so delicious that I totally pigged out and ate every last bite of it. That was plenty of food for one person, but I was so wowed by the taste of everything that I didn't care. My dog was also a big fan of the beef terriyaki, which is his favorite treat, hands down. As far as I'm concerned, this is great Chinese food at Maverick and I'll be going back, regularly. read more
