General tso chicken lunch special (less than $8 net..tasty + really good deal! Hit the spot for me)
    Joop V.

I love this fast, no frill American Chinese restaurant. Their portion is also quite generous compared to the prices. Their lunch combo (a side of choice, fried or white rice and a sweet and sour soup) is good enough for a hungry person to be satisfied! They definitely are on a cheaper side for Chinese food in Somerville/Cambridge area for sure. Their staff don't really speak English as clearly and other than what I ordered, I have trouble understanding what they are saying at times. However, they are good, hardworking people! The dishes you order may take a while to come out because they make them fresh to order for you. Check it out if you have time. I'm definitely planning to stop by here again in the future even though I'm moving out of this area already.

Good food, good portions, good price; delivery driver can be quite rude. I'd easily give Mandarin Chinese Restaurant 4+ stars for their food. They serve your standard American-Chinese staples and I'd definitely rate them above average in this category. The portions are generous and their prices are very reasonable. The only reason I wouldn't rate their food at 5 stars is because I had one order of beef teriyaki (out of two) which tasted a bit sour, likely from being too old. I ordered both the General Tso and Sesame Chicken, and the dishes were crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, with a well-balanced sauce that was the right amount of sweet, sour and salty. The reason for dropping Mandarin Chinese Restaurant to 3 stars is because of one of the delivery drivers who was rude: Long story short, I ordered through Grubhub and requested the driver text me upon arrival. I request to be texted as my phone automatically blocks calls from phone numbers that are not on my contacts list. I do this so I don't get bothered by spam and marketing callers that can ping me up to a dozen times a day. Instead, the driver spammed my doorbell (as in they pressed in maybe 5-7 times within a 5 second time frame). When I came out, he shined his flashlight right into my eyes like a movie interrogation scene and started yelling at me about how I need to answer my phone. I looked at my phone and saw 0 text messages, and asked if he texted me. He then repeatedly told me that I need to answer my phone, to which I repeatedly asked back whether he texted me as I had requested. We did this about a half dozen times before finally relented that he did not text me, handed my food and walked away. I looked at some of the other reviews on Grubhub, and it looks like the common thread is that the delivery driver can get quite cranky if there is any complexity to the delivery order, whether the drop off point is out of the way or you want to be contacted a particular way. It seems that if you have an easy address to deliver to, and can pick up the phone when he calls, this probably won't be an issue. However, anything outside that approach and the delivery driver may give you a piece of his mind.

Hubby and I are on a quest to find our favorite naughty Chinese food. We ordered from Mandarin last night. I was very pleasantly surprised. The food is exactly what you want from Chinese takeout. Food came at a decent time, everything was hot and fresh. We got chicken wings, house fried rice, spare ribs, egg drop soup, and hot and spicy shrimp (mild). They have huge crispy chicken wings! They do it differently as it seems they flour the wings, if you're into Dominican style pica pollo chicken or even southern fried chicken, you will definitely be into these! They also have fried plantains on the menu which leads me to wonder if there is some DR influence there, regardless We loved them! Get the wings! Egg drop soup was good. House fried rice was good, I personally like mine to look darker, but taste was good. The shrimp was ordered mild, but was too spicy for me! I was really impressed by the spare ribs, an American Chinese classic I usually avoid. Their spare ribs were nice! Very well cooked, no weird rubbery pieces or globby fat. They were almost candied, really nice texture and flavor! The color was really appealing as well. This might be our go to place, for the wings alone! The only critique is they did not send any fortune cookies.

A no-nonsense Chinese takeaway place. I ordered a large Vegetable Lo Mein. I was not disappointed at all. Great taste, and good quantity.

We got the Szechuan cold noodle ($10.95), Szechuan style string beans with pork ($13.95), cumin lamb ($19.95), and a bowl of rice ($1.85) to share. The one who took our order warned us that the dishes would be spicy but they were honestly okay! If you can handle Shin ramen or hot Cheetos then the dishes are even milder. The cold noodles were nice and chewy and soaked in chili oil. I wouldn't have minded if they were more garlicky. The sauce had a nice balance between sweet, sour, and savory. The string beans were fresh and had a pretty mild flavor to them with just the right amount of salt. There wasn't a lot of pork in the dish. I loved the flavor of the cumin lamb although it was on the greasy side. Each piece of lamb was so tender and packed with smoky cumin flavor! This was probably the spiciest dish of all of them and it went perfectly with rice. The lunch specials seem like a very good deal especially since food prices have increased so much recently.

For appetizers, I got the vegetarian spring roll and scallion pancakes. Both were delicious, and they were not excessively greasy, a problem I often find in these items. I ordered four vegetarian main courses: Chinese Eggplant with Basil, Spicy Broccoli with garlic sauce, sauteed lotus root with black fungus, and Kung Pao tofu. The vegetables were all well seasoned and delicious, but the kung pao tofu was my favorite dish of the night. The tofu was crispy on the outside and slightly firm but moist on the inside. And the sauce complemented the rest of the dish well. Our total bill was around $100. I will absolutely visit Cilantro again, and I recommend it for take out!

My friends ordered the same dish, but one of theirs came out bland and without any sauce. The waiter's explanation was that they have two chefs... and so what? The service was awful. I don't mind when staff don't speak English well, but not to the point where she couldn't understand us and we could barely understand her. She was rude, pointing her finger at each person's face while speaking. And yes, at the end, she demanded a tip. When we explained why we weren't going to leave one, we had to listen to a long lecture--in very hard-to-understand English--about how "not nice" we are. Stay away from this place! Fish Fillet with Hot Chili Sauce水煮魚片: As expected of their signature dish! The basa fish fillets were incredibly tender, the Szechuan peppercorns were fragrant but not numbing, and the overall flavor was oily but not greasy. The server would remove the chilies after serving, so there was no need to worry about the spiciness. Beef Fillets & Cabbage with Hot Chili Sauce水煮牛肉: Redder and spicier than the boiled fish. The Szechuan people present commented that this was the only dish with flavor. The beef was very tender; although you could taste the tenderizing powder, it wasn't a big problem. Scallions and Szechuan peppercorns contributed much to the fragrance. Pork Intestine with Preserved Vegetable酸菜大腸: Surprisingly, it tasted like... Hakka cuisine? The pork intestines were cut on the thicker side, not the usual kind, but the slightly sour and spicy flavor with a light thickening was just right. Spicy Frog in Fried Pot乾鍋牛蛙: Despite the name, there was a lot of sauce; the bullfrog meat was too tough and chewy. Not recommended. Ma Po Tofu (With minced pork)麻婆豆腐: Very delicious! The tofu was very tender, and the Sichuan peppercorns were very fragrant. Duck with Peking Plum Sauce京醬鴨片: The duck meat was mushy and lacked texture, and the Beijing plum sauce was heavily diluted. I had a feeling of not knowing what I had eaten. Sichuan Spicy Dumpling紅油水餃: I loved them!! The dumplings were large, the filling was generous, and the skin was on the thicker side, giving them a good chewy and firm texture. Besides the chili oil and peanuts, there was a hint of vinegar, which was very refreshing. Steamed Juicy Pork Bun小籠包: The restaurant claims they are handmade daily. Plenty of soup filling, but slightly oily; the skin was chewy but not dry, unfortunately one was broken. This, sadly, was in no small part due to the concerningly low rating that Changsho holds on this platform. This changed in November 2025. If you penetrate the brutal but not brutalist concrete building on the side of Mass Ave, you find yourself in a space that is clean and colorful, yet you find yourself with a weak sense of something being slightly off. An indoor waterfall cascades to your right. A sense of vague unease comes from the bowels of your soul. For me, the aesthetic brought me back to Orchid in Garden City, NY, which I visited a number of times in my childhood. Changsho is a Cambridge staple (allegedly from 1977) that recalls a lost style of Chinese restaurant in the US. Put simply, it's as if the restaurant were designed to give the locals a taste of "The Orient" in a way that would also greatly appeal to the locals. As a result, you have wood-paneled walls, large ceramic vases, East Asian instruments, and other such decor throughout the venue. There is surely more that can be said in this respect, but I shall stop here. That aside, I can now move to the food. I sampled several items, including a formosa crispy chicken, streamed edamame dumplings, vegetable spring rolls, and dry cooked string beans. The chicken was salty, as could have been expected, but I was very pleased overall with the food. The green beans in particular were flavorful and delicious, coated in a sumptuous ointment-like sauce. I read several reviews about evil and vile service at Changsho. This was not at all my experience. The wait staff were some of the friendliest people I met this month, and the food emerged quickly to be readily shoved down our eager gullets. The restaurant is not cheap, but not extraordinarily expensive -- it is in line with what you would expect for a slightly nicer (but not fancy) sit-down dinner. The Changsho experience was impressive, and I would readily return.

The Roasted Sesame Cold Noodles were ok, as was the eggplant (which had almost zero basil). The Mu Shi was boring. The service was extraordinary - attentive, welcoming, and friendly. The decor was tasteful, the music was American jazz, which was nice. The food was tasty, but other than the expensive har gao, definitely not worth Changsho's high prices.
