Is it the best Chinese food place? No. But will they give you an obscene amount of food (especially if you order fried rice) that causes the structural integrity of the box to falter? Absolutely. Friendly staff will send you home with enough food for the weekend or enough for one amazing Friday stomach ache. It's tasty, it's generous, and it's a nice little spot that should be picked every time over the Panda Express across the street. Plus the egg rolls are pretty tasty, but I ate them before I wrote this review. Also despite being tiny, you'll always see the place full of enthusiastic families. Grab a mountain of food and enjoy.

If you know me; you know that I love Chinese Food; Cantonese to be exact but I love all Chinese Food and my husband and I have been struggling to find a reliable good place. I'm doing this Yelp because I think that it's important to have current reviews; which is how I found this place. I had been going to another place in Costa Mesa but they changed management and just wasn't as good as it was before. A friend at work referred me to another place in Santa Ana but when I checked Yelp they had 3.5 stars and I found Hong Kong Express with 4 stars and decided to try them; and so far I'm glad I did! So I'm usually a "chef order" type of girl but this day I had a taste for the express buffet. I ordered half rice; half noodles, broccoli and beef, bbq pork and a side of orange chicken! For express it was really good with a good but not greasy taste. I decided to eat a portion of my order there because I was on lunch and the only thing that was a concern for me is that it wasn't as warm/hot as I like my food; which might've been because mine was off the top and not closer to the burners of the chafin dishes. My husband had some later that evening where he could heaten it up and he said he really enjoyed it! Let me back up to the beginning where I was greeted very politely upon entering the restaurant and I believe it was the owner or the manager; Julie, that assisted me and was very personable with me and all of her customers that walked in. As I previously stated everything was good but it appears that their orange chicken is a hit with pretty much every one; as atleast 10 ppl came in while I was eating and all ordered the orange chicken! I will definitely be returning to try more dishes!

Holy moly guacamole. This place hooks it up With some massively generous portions. It hits the g spot and the flavors are for the most part on point. Another highlight is the awesome mgmt / owners. They're a friendly delight.

I was so hungry ,I forgot to take a pic of my plate. They serve great portions.

Hong Kong Express has multiple locations across Southern California and serves take-out Chinese food. You can think of it as an elevated Panda Express with other dishes that you can't get there like BBQ pork. We ordered the 3-item combo (~$16) and like others have mentioned, the portions are huge! They put two entrees in the box and it barely held together. They put the third entree in a separate small container so it was a lot of food. Out of the entrees we ordered my favorites were the orange chicken and BBQ pork. Some other ones we ordered (beef and broccoli, teriyaki chicken) were okay. We were not fans of other ones (kung pao chicken, pepper chicken) because they were mainly veggies with not as much meat. I noticed that most of their entrees were chicken dishes and I would've liked to have seen more beef and pork dishes but it's probably more of a cost thing. Between the chow mein and the fried rice, I liked the former more. Overall the entrees were decent but I would've preferred more flavors in them. It's a local business and they were very friendly. The food was ready to go and we were in and out in minutes.

Their eggrolls were so crisp and veggie on the inside

This place is just as described, the portions are large enough to feed you or three not joking also Service and 1 are welcome. Staff is very very nice and accommodating my partner and I had a few rough days and coming Here was peaceful. Both eating there was still leftovers. Everything was fresh and very very flavorful.

Hong Kong Express is an amazing Chinese Food spot located in Costa Mesa!!! Service is quick and the plates are served with overflowing goodness!!! Their Chow Mein is just strands of delicious noodles!!! Their BBQ Pork is flavorful and their Orange Chicken is just sooooooo bomb!!!! This place affordable with 2 items and Chow Mein is about 13 dollars which is a steal!!! The place is small, but efficient and effective!!! When my friend and I showed up 3 people were ahead of us only took us about 5 min to order and dip! Quite fast and I am so full typing this review hahahah!!!! Thank you Hong Kong Express for the satisfaction I received from your restaurant tonight!!!! Keep it up ;)

Casual Chinese takeout with a nice variety of options and huge, generous portions. Love that the chow mein has thick noodles and the flavor on the bbq chicken and bbq pork is top notch. Great value for the money. Service was brusque but efficient. Easy to find parking and there's a few small tables if you want to eat there.

So worth it!!! We came at around 8:30 on a Sunday night just a half hour before they closed. They still had a good amount of items available but not all of them since their kitchen closes an hour before closing. We got the 2 entree/2 sides plate with chow mein as both entrees and orange chicken and eggplant tofu as our sides. Everything was so delicious and we got it for just $15. They packed our plate with so much food just like how we saw it on social media! The workers were really kind too even though we came so late. There is a bit of seating if you want to eat inside but I think it's better for takeout. Definitely come out here for some food Chinese takeout that's actually worth your money!

OMG how have I just discovered this place now? this is the only Chinese take out food I will go to from now on... Panda Express who?! my goodness... the portion here is ridiculous in the best way possible! we got 3 entrees: orange chicken, broccoli and beef and bbq pork over a generous amount of fried rice and chow mein for only $15!!! They even had to stuff the third entrees in another small box bc it didn't fit the takeout box since they don't skimp out !! this fed my hungry husband and I both!!! we were so full after this meal. It is honestly a bang for your buck! service was super quick and the staff was really friendly!

Panda Express could NEVER! Hong Kong Express was a popular stop for my family while I was in high school. My older brother would bring some home for us after he got off work and it fed all of us. These portion sizes aren't just bringing value, they allow a family to dine together without going broke or hungry. I am truly grateful for the Hong Kong Express chain. Even then I come back and I see families ordering to eat together. I hope this business stays forever!

Omg I am so glad I discovered this place thank you tik tok!!! I went on a weekend morning at 11 am and got the lunch special, which is an AMAZING deal. You get chow mein and fried rice, one protein, one egg roll, and a drink for only $10. And the portion is HUGE. This meal lasted me 3 days. I loved the orange chicken so much, it was sweet and so crispy (I prefer over battered). The chow mein was also really good and not too salty like I feared. It had veggies in it like onions and cabbage but I really wish there was more! I love veggies in my chow mein. The egg roll was my favorite part- so crispy and inside was jam packed with veggies. Very easy parking!

Interesting find in a small strip mall behind a gas station. This Chinese restaurant was…read moresurprisingly authentic and had an extensive menu. They have several authentic Chinese dishes which are bold - eg hot goose intestines or chili frog anyone? But there are safer choices as well as American Chinese dishes eg walnut shrimp and Mongolian beef. We ordered shrimp w Napa cabbage and Mapo tofu which has a kick to it.

Ordered 3 dishes for 2 adults and two 3-yr old kids. First of all, Moon Bay makes you order online. That's a mistake because they claimed I pressed the wrong button hence the wrong order! I know what I wanted! I DID NOT PRESS THE WRONG BUTTON! Secondly, all the dishes we ordered tasted like it was seasoned with vinegar and way too salty; the Kung Pao chicken came with "super dry" little kid-size bite chicken pieces seared with a hard fried batter with the sauce tasting like vinegar; the dried fried green beans were old and wimpy and way too salty with the sauce very vinegry; we asked for beef stir fried noodles (for the kids) and got shrimp instead and Moon Bay would NOT make it right. Moreover, the dish should be named stir fried bean sprouts (65%) with cabbage (10%) and scrambled eggs (10%). I think we barely got 15% noodles - that's what the 3-yr old wanted. In summary - don't waste your money! Spent $62.88 for this meal and we left hungry.

Leaving this review after an almost bad experience to help the restaurant or anyone else that may…read morehave eaten here today. 5 stars for fixing the problem immediately for us. We've been here several times before and what keeps us coming back is the quality of the food. Today, they had a new chef cook our food and it was terrible. Green beans were extremely sour (way way too much vinegar). Mapo Tofu had a ton of oil but not enough sauce, so it was just flavorless except the oil. The fried pork chop was over fried where some pieces you can't even bite through. The rice had too much water in it and was mushy. I rarely return food but this time it was so bad we had to let them know. We returned all of our dishes back to them. They let us know there was a new chef today, and they would remake all the dishes for us with the original chef. The replacement dishes were just as good as all our previous visits and it was excellent again! So thanks to the staff for fixing the problem. I'm not sure if they are training a new chef to take over, or as a backup, but they need to be careful as serving bad quality food like that would drive most people to never come back. We knew the food was good from prior experience, so we knew we could ask why the food quality changed. For first time customers, or those that may have ordered to go - if you had bad food today, it may have been a fluke due to the new chef. Service however was a amazing as usual. For all our visits including today, the staff has been kind and always looking for ways to help out and make sure we were having a good experience. So besides the food being good, I would say excellent service is also huge plus here. Don't be fooled with the automated ordering and robot delivering the food into thinking there is no service. The people behind the counter are awesome! Hope management takes care of this new chef issue quickly since their food quality is the main reason people come here. There was a night and day difference between the original food we got today, and the replacement!

Modern Chinese, Ancient Disappointment…read more EverSpring looks great, sounds great, and is priced like it plans to deliver something memorable. Unfortunately, what I'll remember most is how quickly my excitement turned into polite disappointment. The salt and pepper pork chops were...bold. And by bold I mean shockingly salty, like the chef was trying to preserve them for winter. I've had salt and pepper chops more times than I can count, and this version tasted nothing like any of them. Overcooked, oddly flavored, and just completely off. If this was a creative interpretation, creativity may have gone a step too far. Then there was the crispy beef. I say this with sincerity: it was inedible. Not "I'm picky" inedible--burned-breading-that-tastes-like-toasted-mistakes inedible. Each bite delivered a charming note of scorched regret, like someone deep-fried a crouton and called it a day. I stopped eating not because I was full, but because my taste buds filed an HR complaint. And look, if this were cheap comfort food, I'd shrug it off. But this is sit-up-straight-when-the-bill-arrives pricing. For what we paid, I expected at least one dish to make me say, "Okay, this works." That moment never came. The concept is solid, but the food just didn't deliver. I wanted to love it. My taste buds, however, requested an early exit. Everything went to the trash can. Never again.
