I tend to be pretty picky but the bigger issue is that I'm a redhead and apparently getting the right shade of red for a lot of stylists is challenging. Well, not here. I'm schooled in color theory so I was able to explain the exact shade of red I wanted and Justin delivered. Besides being a sweetheart, we immediately connected. He's a total smart ass and I loved that!! So if you lack personality or sense of humor, this may not be the stylist for you. He's creative, experienced and gives great recommendations, especially when I want something done to my hair that I really shouldn't be doing. I have also gone to Rebecca, the salon owner, in Justin's absence, and she's a badass as well. I have gotten microblading done with Kristina when she had only done like 10 people and she did a great job! Being a professional make-up artist and helping many people who don't know how to articulate what they want, it can be challenging to please the customer. If you don't really know what you want or how to articulate it, find pictures to show. Be realistic though. If you don't look anything like Beyonce or whatever flavor she's wearing for the week, that may not be the best screenshot to show. Look at face shapes, skin tone, hair texture, etc. and accept wether or not you have the kind of hair and face that you can really do ANYTHING with. When it came time to choose the right shade, she brought out a color swatch book and walked me through the different tones, helping me find the one that would complement me best. I really appreciated how personalized the experience felt, and I loved being able to look through all the color options myself. I booked a session with Harix bc of online reviews about his specialty with curly hair. When I sat down in the chair I explained what I wanted - a bit of clean up, styling to make my hair more office friendly BUT most importantly to have a style that I comb back while preserving as much length as possible with the intent of growing it longer still. The cut itself couldn't have been more than 15 minutes of rough chops. When he moved to washing my hair I assumed there would be a more detailed clean up after the wash but instead we talked about products. He then said in terms of styling that instead of combing back he was going to show me something different. He set it (I couldn't see bc there was no mirror near the sink) and placed me under a hair dryer station. 15 minutes later he brings me back to the seat and I am (in a word) horrified. Instead of combing back, he has given me a mess of curls/broccoli head with hair going in every direction. Honestly I haven't had a cut that bad since my early teens at the barber shops in the Bronx where there was a significant language barrier. I booked a late appointment and didn't want to lose more hair by asking him to clean it up so I bit the bullet and left. For $200+ I feel like my wants should not be overridden by whatever the stylist thinks looks better, especially when its the exact opposite of what I requested, especially especially without letting me know thats his intention, esp. esp. esp without showing me in a mirror before letting the product set. Also, there was no clean up of the back of my neck, the sides, or my beard. I really felt dissappointed by the whole experience. I've gotten much better service and attention to detail in much cheaper barber shops.

I'm usually a no frills kind of girl but I needed to look like "I tried for the bride." All the bridesmaids were getting their hair and makeup done, assembly line style in their hotel room in Jersey. There was no way I was going to do that... Enter Zuleika, my hero and my new best friend. She was willing to see me at the ungodly hour of 9am (even though her hours usually start at 11). She patiently listened to me panic, heard me out that I didn't want to look like a pre-madonna, but that I just wanted some sort of fun braid updo with simple makeup to highlight my eyes and cheekbones. We laughed until we cried. And 2 hours later, I didn't even recognize myself. I came in acting like no frills plumber, but left a princess, galloping away on white pony! Compliments were off the charts. I even think the bridesmaids were secretly jealous. My girlfriend could not take her eyes off of me. The only bad thing to come out of this is that I might have a new addiction. Zu is so amazing and so so so talented. And so kind. She's raising money and also going over to Puerto Rico to help them recover from the hurricane. So, please do yourself a favor and go see her. You will NOT be disappointed!!!
