We discovered Honey Crumb Bakery back in 2018 when we were wedding planning. We ordered the cake testing, and emailed with Carla on our feedback and what we liked/didn't liked. She then offered to remake one of the flavors with a sponge cake instead to see if that would work. It did! We ordered our wedding cake from her and it was absolutely delicious. My husband that doesn't like desserts looks forward to this cake every year. Every year, yes! I don't doubt Honeycrumb makes tasty cakes. But let's be honest - there are plenty of people who know how to make a cake. When I'm planning an event, my business relationship with a vendor is often even more important to me than the caliber of the product. And in this case, I am relieved that my interaction with Honeycrumb was finite and that I won't have to interact with them again. I am in the market for at least one high-end, custom cakes. Most vendors, in my experience, are willing to arrange cake tastings (for a price) so that you can try the different cake flavors before you shell out hundreds / thousands of dollars on the cake of your dreams. Not Honeycrumb! LOLOLOL absolutely not. Or, at least not on any terms but theirs. For one, you cannot go into the shop to taste the cakes. They also do not sell a single product that is not custom-made. So - the only way to try a cake before you commit to purchasing one is to spend at least $68 on a tasting. At least on their website, it seems the only way to DO a tasting is to book a cake tasting for pickup. According to Honeycrumb's site: "We've found it's much more efficient and fun (for everyone!) if you do the tasting in the comfort of your own home, and then we discuss and finalize all the details for your cake order via email or phone." Furthermore, you can't even taste flavors that YOU pick, or even all of their flavors in one go! No, you would need to spread your tastings across TWO MONTHS to try all of the flavors. Again, in their words: "We alternate the flavors for subsequent tastings. There are 8x flavors on our menu in total. So, if you order TWO tastings, one after the other, you'll sample our entire menu!" But it gets better! Is it convenient to acquire the cake tasting, you ask? ABSOLUTELY NOT. No - you have a two-hour window, once a month, on a Saturday to get the cake. They generously offer that you can have someone else pick up the cake tasting FOR you, or they can set the cake aside for you for later, but they make it clear that this is a weird imposition, and that your cake might not taste as good because you won't be picking it up on the day it was meant to be "enjoyed." If I'm trying to plan a party, how is spending TWO FREAKING MONTHS trying your cakes on YOUR EXTREMELY RESTRICTIVE SCHEDULE is "efficient" or "fun" for me? Maybe you see where this review is going. I booked a cake tasting, and confirmed that the two-hour pickup window would happen when I was in town. But then - lo and behold - my May schedule changed. A month before the pickup was supposed to happen, I reached out to Honeycrumb to try to cancel the tasting pick-up and get my money back. I was informed that, despite the tasting happening a month in the future I would absolutely never see my $68 again. Yes -- Carla said I could pick up the cake on a Monday instead, but the overall inconvenience of the tasting, paired with the refusal to cancel a (non-custom) reservation more than a month in the future, left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I figured it was worth a shot to protest the charge with PayPal. Shortly after submitting the protest, I received a weird, long email from Carla whose tone was best described as "extreme hostility masquerading as confusion." I decided the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. I stopped engaging entirely and decided not to pick up the cake after all. I found the overall experience so weird and unpleasant I will avoid Honeycrumb and vendors like them in the future. Update: Though Carla tried to remove my reviews on The Knot and Wedding Wire, they have been reinstated because I can back up everything I said in the review above. read more

I handpicked Carla to do my wedding cake for my upcoming wedding this year because her prices are plainly listed on her catalog, and her cakes are visually stunning. There were other cake vendors that I had been considering, but I liked that she listed her catalog of cakes and rough pricing on her website, saving my an extra step of contact. Because of this, I considered her and only her for my wedding cake. Cake tastings were great. Since then I've been in to buy several other treats from her including the weekly cake parfait (I love variety! This changes every week), macarons, nutella cupcakes, rice krispie treats - just to name a few. All have been extremely tasty and delicious! Ordering through her online store and picking up curbside is a very convenient way to get goods during pandemic times. I highly recommend it. Now onto a more sensitive subject: after securing her as my wedding cake vendor a few months ago, Covid19 then ransacked everyone's plans and I was among many couples that decided to postpone their wedding until times were more stable. Carla offered me some fair choices regarding postponing my wedding. While I personally couldn't transfer my pricing to next year's cake, Carla graciously offered my the entire amount I put down as credits to the store to use until then. Considering Honey Crumb is a small business, and one that typically thrives on wedding season which is now disallowed, I felt this was a very kind gesture. I find it heartbreaking to see other consumers enraged at anything small businesses are trying to do/offer to stay afloat during these tough times. My wife and I ordered a cake for a small belated reception for our family who flew in to town. We sent them photos and asked for cake toppers that resembled us and our two cats at 40$ a piece. We paid about $330 for a small cake and these cake toppers. The day I went to pick them up, I was so disappointed. We did not know the figurines would not be in ceramic and the human figures looked distorted (photos attached). I called to let her know we were unhappy. She called back and was polite and stated she had a premade figurines that she could paint the hair black for us. We approved of this and returned the cake and had them rearrange the top. It looked much better. They refunded us half the cost of the figurines. (You definitely couldn't tell one was vegan, and it even stayed moist in the fridge longer than the crumbly yellow cake, but both were great as leftovers!) In retrospect, we should have gotten smaller "official" cakes and ordered extra kitchen cakes instead of getting two huge tiered cakes, which were stressful to transport and store (but they made it just fine!). TL;DR: After refusing to discuss ANY refund of our ~$600 deposit for our COVID-19 cancelled wedding cake, my fiancee and I each left a 1-star review for Honey Crumb. Carla then harassed us, called us petty, vindictive, and entitled, and told us we were "playing victim". You can read all of this in her original reply, attached below as a screenshot. One week later, she has suddenly refunded the entire deposit without explanation. We are still hurt and shocked by our interactions with her, but are changing this review from 1-star to 2-stars to reflect this. We are leaving our original review and screenshot of Carla's original response below, so future potential customers can decide for themselves if they'd like to do business here. We certainly will not be. Original review: My fiancee and I had to cancel our wedding due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, three months in advance. We kindly asked Honey Crumb to cancel the cake we ordered and asked for just half of our deposit of almost $600 back. Honey Crumb refused and insisted on keeping 100% of the deposit, only offering a store credit expiring in 6 months, which we have no use for. Honey Crumb says that we "chose" to cancel, but that is entirely false. Many of our family members would be flying from out of the country, which is currently blocked by travel restrictions and VISA issues. There is also no guarantee that the state will allow events with 100 guests in August, and it is too risky for us to move forward with that date. They had not done any work for us besides a tasting session which we paid for separately. Every other wedding vendor we dealt with understood the extraordinary circumstances and refunded most of our deposits, with some keeping 10-20%, which was totally fair to us. Honey Crumb would not budge from keeping every single dollar. I should also note that, as the Coronavirus crisis started and continued, every one of our vendors reached out to us to periodically to check in with us and keep us informed of our options. Honey Crumb did not reach out a single time, in any way. They have zero sympathy. We will never do business with Honey Crumb again. We urge others to do the same. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt that this is because of the capability of Yelp's platform as opposed to Honey Crumb trying to do what they can to save face. ****** We wrote this review publicly within THE WEEK following our wedding. I wanted to lay this to rest instead of figuring out how to "make things right" because (in my opinion)... There is NOTHING that can be done to "make things right". This is the cake that we had for our wedding and nothing short of going back in time or having another wedding is going to be able to change that. I'm changing this review to a 1 star rating. TL;DR - This whole experience working with Honey Crumb started from great to BAD. If Honey Crumb were professional and had made sure we had the right expectations up front, they would not have to spend time later "making things right". 1. The sketch was sent to us too close to our wedding date. Honey Crumb was prompt in getting us back the cake design. The reminder email for our sketch was sent November 3rd with a response back November 7th for our December 7th wedding. Had the reminder email not been sent who is to say our cake would have been remembered. Not having a sketch created with a wedding just shy over a month away is concerning. If they did not have the bandwidth to design and create our wedding cake because of a hectic schedule, that is a business problem and not something for a client to deal with. 2. The professional did not guide and set the expectations for the layman. The idea that we needed to specify that we wanted lifelike/botanically correct foliage is the wrong mindset. Honey Crumb, being the professional, needed to guide and inform us of how our foliage and flowers would look with the suggested materials. It was not made clear AT ALL that this material would not look realistic, as the only expectation we could have from their instagram is realistic flowers. To a customer with no background in baking, we don't know the difference between gum paste, bubble gum, wafer paper, and paper mache. And the sketch is somehow supposed to clear that up? How can we distinguish a realistic flower from a shitty flower in a sketch? While I agree there may have been miscommunication, as the professional, we would have expected Honey Crumb to make this crystal clear instead of making assumptions. Maybe if we had gotten the sketch before crunch time, we could have had more discussions on the matter. 3. We received feedback about the cake from guests. We heard from several guests that the cake was dry. Obviously they did not know what the cake was supposed to taste like. They are also probably used to subpar cake from weddings. I admit that I am a total cake snob and when it came to a wedding cake, I wanted something that not only looked amazing but tasted amazing: moist but not oily, dense but light, flavorful but not reliant on sugary sweetness for the flavor. After trying over 30 cake samples side by side from 5 different bakeries around town, Honey Crumb was the only bakery that delivered on all of our criteria points, and they even took it one step further! Carla was fantastic to work with - she was incredibly responsive throughout the entire process and helpful at guiding us through all the decision points. The sugar flowers that Carla and her team made for us were also amazing - they were a great match to the florals we had at our wedding. Even my mom, who is even pickier than I am about desserts, couldn't get enough of our lemon blueberry cake! All in all, I was really pleased with the entire process of working with Carla and the beautiful cake she made for us. We can't wait for the next time we order from Honey Crumb! read more
