Went and had a breakfast birthday at Hometown Emporium. Everything was delicious. Two of the girls had omelettes toast, strawberry jelly my friend Andrea had a sandwich. I had a half of a BLT and it was huge. I'm sure it was made on homemade bread. I got a cookie and a pickle and a drink. Great service cute restaurant. Lots of homemade goodies. Once again Hometown has made my life easier and delicious, and without breaking my budget. This month alone, they not only made me the best iced Chai lattes, consistently perfect over and over again but they catered my twins' graduation party, AND they made my twins birthday cupcakes (every year- this year is year 18!). Im always on the hunt for new places and try to support small business. Im sad to say this place was a bust for me. I spent almost $20 for a side salad and sandwich which if they were good I wouldn't mind paying the price. The salad bar selection wasn't great but the toppings that were there weren't fresh. The croutons were old tasting, the lettuce mix brown, and the tomatoes mushy. I got the chicken focaccia bread sandwich and it was very underwhelming and grossed me out. You could hardly taste the pesto flavor and the chicken was cold and tasted like the precooked cold chicken you get in the freezer/fridge section. I thought it was going to be a hot sandwich with fresh chicken but it wasn't. I guess I should have clarified about what kinda of chicken. The cookie that it came with was as thin as paper and also tasted old. I feel bad leaving this review, hopefully they improve. read more

Bummed to write this because this shop used to blow my mind. The menu honestly reads for homey but upscale food, but good lord the prices are CRAZY now(not the biggest concern). Usually, I collect the hot pastrami and have them toast/press the sandwich but decided to try their chicken focaccia because it was on their "Grilled Sandwich" selection. I asked to have the chicken microwaved and assumed the bread would have been toasted. Unfortunately, the meat was cold, and the bread did not have lick of a crunch, and I couldn't even taste the aioli or whatever was supposed to be spread on the bread?... I had to drive back to the shop to get mustard because the sandwich was SO DOUGHY. Almost seemed like the bread may not have been cooked fully?.. the staff was helpful and the cookie was great but for an 18$ sandwich and no drink, please consider warning customers that the sandwiches are not going to be toasted/grilled especially if they order from the "Grilled" section.. Very misleading and being given a cold sandwiches after ordering a "grilled"? I would have been better off paying less at subway. read more

Friendly little bakery and sandwich shop. Greeted all around with smiles and welcome. We were getting a snack before deciding what our evening dinner plans would be. Exeter is a gem of a town in Central California. They are famous for the Exeter Murals which are EXCELLENT and super fun (think Where's Waldo!) Lunchtime rolls around and it is HOT. Hometown was just the place to refuel and cool down. The sandwiches are hearty, service is awesome and they have a ton of baked goodies to take home! My family and I dined at Hometown Emporium just before Thanksgiving, and we rather enjoyed the sandwiches. I had a grilled vegetable sandwich on focaccia, if memory serves. It was really good. To balance this, I went there today for lunch, and had the hot open faced turkey sandwich. Two bites was all I could manage. There wasn't much flavor to speak of; while it was clearly not rancid or spoiled or anything like that, there was an unusual odor emanating from it. The "mashed potatoes" were very lumpy; they were more like simply crushed potatoes. There wasn't a lot of flavor in the gravy. As noted before, I managed two bites of each, and that was it. While I can heartily recommend the grilled sandwiches, stay as far away from the open faced turkey as you possibly can. My star rating averages the very good and the very bad. read more

Hometown is a go-to spot for lunch in Exeter. They make their own bread and when they originally opened they made their own lunch meat as well. While those were the best darn sandwiches I think I ever had, making all your own lunch meat along with your own bread, cookies, fudge and various other sweets is not sustainable. Their sandwiches are still great with their homemade bread, good quality lunch meat and they are served with a pickle spear and a homemade cookie. At Christmas time I always buy cookies and fudge from here to put in goodie bags for my co-workers. read more

My family loves this place. We don't come here a lot since we live in Visalia but decided to go out there today for lunch. I was super disappointed to see a long blonde hair wrapped about my daughters cake pop. Then she starts to eat her sandwich when she finds another long blonde hair sticking out. Was in Exeter for the day and everyone I asked said this was the BEST place in town for lunch. The woman at the counter said the build your own sandwiches were their most popular item and I could see why - the wheat walnut bread was soft like a cloud, the shredded turkey was just the right texture, and the sandwich as-is was just perfect. I ordered a half but wished I had gotten a full to save for work the next day! Also had a chocolate cupcake (the icing was some of the best I've ever had!) and a gingersnap cookie. Everyone at the store was super friendly and didn't mind giving recommendations. My boyfriend ordered one of their specialty sandwiches on ciabatta and found it a little dense, so I would definitely recommend the build your own to get the best experience. They make all their sandwich bread in house and it's just the right consistency - not too fluffy or too dry or too moist. Goldilocks would love this place. Iced tea was also wonderful, as a nice bonus. I'd come back in a heartbeat for the cupcakes next time I'm in town and the sandwich is a wonderful pick me up during lunch time. read more
