My go-to place when I am missing mom's home cooked meals. Great value where $10 gets you 3 entrees and rice with generous portions. If you dine in, there is also free unlimited delicious soup. Was in the area and wanted some Taiwanese breakfast. Walked in and the guy at the counter (probably the owner) greets me in Chinese. He asks if I want breakfast and I say yes. There is a paper menu he shows and you can order what/how many you want. Most of the items are in English but the owner was able to explain the ones I couldn't read. Got the turnip cake, you tiao, Shao bing, and a fan Tuan which came out to $11.50, cash only. Obviously great if you're on the paleo. It was still early so I had to wait as they cooked/made everything to order less than 10 minutes. As the owner packed everything up, he asked if I needed utensils or napkins. Many places will not even ask - I'm sympathetic to the extra costs for restaurants, so it was hospitable of him to ask. Food was good. Shao bing was flaky and super messy -as it should be. You tiao was fluffy and not dense. The fan Tuan had pieces of you tiao, preserved turnip and pork floss. For some reason all the fan tuans in the dfw don't put a whole piece you tiao in them which is what it is. It tasted fine. The turnip cake was nicely fried and had good daikon flavor, but the texture was a little soft. Basically impossible to replicate mom's. I'll definitely be back. Shao bing and you tiao for sure along with some other breakfast items and the buffet lunch/dinner items. Owner and staff were wearing masks. It looks like you can eat it there if you want. This place is cheap and food tastes pretty good for what you pay for. It's like cafeteria food, so there's a bunch of different food that are already cooked and you get to choose three main sides with rice. You can get an extra side for a additional price but it's not that much. My husband and I have been here three times and they do switch out some of the food options at times but most of the options are the same. This is a cafeteria-style place. I believe most people order to-go, though I did see tables you could sit at. The options were endless and I wish I could try more! As with many chinese dishes, it was quite greasy. We ordered 3 different togo platters, with 3 dishes + rice each. I'm not sure of the names, so I'll try my best. Braised Pork Ribs: this was one of my favorites as it reminded me of Vietnamese caramelized ribs. It's on the sweeter side, but the meat falls off the bone. Tomato & Egg: again, very akin to homestyle cooking (hence the name), I loved this dish. Simple and filling. It had just the right amount of saltiness and tomatoes. Stuffed Soy Bean Curd Roll: this! It reminds me of the dish at dimsum. It's stuffed with pork and veggies and has a nice thick sauce. I loved this! Braised Chicken & Potato: this was recommended by the server and for good reason. She said if you mix the sauce and rice it's a perfect combo. Slightly sweet (not as sweet as the braised pork ribs), with more peppery notes. The potatoes were soft, but not disintegrated. Cabbage: I wasn't sure how I'd like this cooked cabbage dish but I was pleasantly surprised. It was slightly smokey and the cabbage was cooked to my liking. I'd definitely get this again. Bean sprout & chives: I loved this. It went perfectly with sweet and savory meat dishes. It was seasoned well, without being too salty. More on the bland side which I was expecting since it helps neutralize all the over flavors. This dish provides the crunchy texture I was looking for. Sliced Pork: this was okay, it was your average sliced pork with some seasoning. I could do without. Chicken & Peppers: this had a nice black peppery/bell pepper taste. The chicken pieces were quite small and slightly breaded. I could take it or leave it. Kung Pao Chicken: Better than your average kung pao chicken, I usually don't get this but glad I tried it. read more

You first walk in and see a line of Chinese food ready to be scooped onto your tray- the setup reminded me of a Panda Express; however, instead of non-Asians being the majority of the population crowding the venue, you see Asians everywhere speaking their respective languages. Asians eating at an Asian restaurant is always a reassuring sign; so far so good. Awesome, in fact. I've been to Hometown Cafe several times since the pandemic began, usually for takeout during dinner time hours. It's unfortunate that usually when I come by a lot of the "pick three dishes for a meal" options are depleted, and some of my favorites aren't available anymore -- I definitely understand why they're not as likely to cook up large batches of options later on in the evening, since business is probably much slower than usual -- but I can usually find the spicy glass noodles and the tofu wrapped meat available, and those are always excellent. The eggplant and green beans are usually my fave, but whenever I come in the evenings other patrons have already snatched those options up. They also have a great "pick two dishes with no rice" option that is really good for takeout if you can just make the rice at home -- I always enjoy having more of each dish to share. I think the next time I visit I'm going to try to order off their regular menu -- shrimp fried rice is a classic -- and hopefully it's delicious! read more
