I had a feeling that there would be a lot of things that would catch my eye and I was right, but we were good and stayed on mission. A friend was having a Halloween party and I wanted to bring an on-theme food item. World Market had the coolest pumpkin shaped noodles, so I made macaroni salad. The noodles were flavored and multicolored and the macaroni salad seemed to be a hit. We also could not resist these weird spongy blue sour egg shaped candies because Jeremy loves blue Raspberry anything. He's been trying to get me to try one ever since because it's a texture sensation, but not necessarily in a good way. But we love to share experiences and make fun of the bad ones, so I may relent at some point. We signed up for their loyalty program and received an instant discount. And there's already a coupon waiting for me in my email box. That'll come in handy when we return to buy a bunch of unusual international snacks for Jeremy's little brother's upcoming birthday.

My phone screen had just…read moreshattered and I was freaking out (I didn't listen to my Dad and refused to get a proper case) and I had to call for a ride home. Murphy's law I guess. Its a great story now but when I dropped my phone I was in a lot of trouble. Nothing, and I mean nothing... no stores were open. Except this one place that still had its lights on. I walked up to the store and I was soaked from being out in the rain. The woman inside was closing up and I knocked on the door and when she saw me she immediately sprinted to the door to let me in. Thank goodness she was there. I never would have stumbled upon this brilliant shop BENTON and BUCKLEY had I been able to actually call for an Uber...so I do believe everything happens for a reason. If you already know of this place, then you know how lovely Deborah is to talk to. She has so many great stories and is truly passionate about her business (and her 3 dogs!). The store has amazing antiques and all sorts of great dinnerware and furniture, pillows and some really cool lamps. Not to mention she pretty much has a story about each item she sells. She's truly just a caring, brilliant and kind person. The owner immediately got me a towel (one of the brand new ones she sells by the way) and gave it me to dry off. She told me her name was Deborah and I explained my situation. She never once asked me to buy anything, even though I offered to buy something in order to use her phone. But Deborah only cared about helping me get home. More than that, she asked how my day was and we got to talking while I waited for a ride. No one picked up so she arranged for an Uber to take me home and paid for it. I am writing this review to say thank you. And I will be coming back often to support the store and I'm telling all of my friends about it. America needs more genuine, small business owners like Deborah and Benton and Buckley.

First off, I agree, this is the closest that we get to the MoMA Store in Baltimore, but there is so much more to this establishment. The Store is broken into sections... there is a clothing section... very beautiful and a little out of my price range, a home wears section that has high-end, but also extremely affordable and beautiful items that are great gifts. There are also fun art books that live next to a little children's section. The "star" of the store is our local Jewelry Celeb, Betty Cooke's section (well actually she owns the whole store) that is devoted to her spectacular pieces. Do not go to tiffany and buy something boring... something that everyone else has... come here and treat yourself or a lucky friend to a beautiful pair of earrings, or a funky ring or any of her other pieces. I feel honored to own 2 pairs of her earrings and they are 2 of my favorite pieces. Ok, so address the non-5 star rating. There is one employee who works at the store, who simply does not belong in this environment. She is judgmental, opinionated and I have even witnessed her yelling at her co-workers while I and other customers were in the store. It's funny, but if you read other reviews of the store, the same issue comes up as well... so I know I am not crazy. Besides that little blip, this is a wonderful, locally owned establishment that all should frequent!!

Zelda Zen is exactly the kind of independent small business that makes Fell's Point special. The part of the store with the counter, the register and the high-end display items look like they might belong on Fifth Avenue - if they dealt in such things, I suppose. I found all of the staff to be incredibly helpful and polite, and were even willing to negotiate a bit on their prices. (I try not to push that envelope in such places, it seems and feels a bit tacky or low-class.) Most of the items are really nice, and the rougher items still fit into the "shabby chic" range - and are priced accordingly. The layout of the store invites you to explore, and there's not a whole lot of categorization (I prefer this method). The nice thing about the store is that A.) they have sporadic updates on Facebook, and B.) they're surrounded by other antique stores. While the competition are bit more plain, it's nice that you can shop from store to store. The other shops nearby range from very rough (found/discarded items), to true rustic antiques, to an auction shop/antique mall. I spent nearly an hour and a half browsing the store, and felt bad I couldn't walk away with anything - but did find a nice shelf/side table across the street for $15. If you visit here, and like what you see - I highly recommend Corner Cottage in Hunt Valley.
