This place was amazing! Anything strange and unusual can be located in this store. Want taxidermy animals? Check! Want necklaces with insects in them? Check! Want a strange wooden skeleton boy? Where did he even get that one? This store is very clean and well organized. The owner Brian goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable and welcome. One of my favorite shops in Hampden. Admittedly, I rarely make a purchase (although most recently, I purchased an air plant), but I visit frequently to marvel at their selection. Their items range from medical oddities to animal specimens to air plants to other (more creepy) things, such as a mask made out of animal intestines (which last time I saw, was not for sale). For how small the space is, they packed it with lots of items, so you can spend anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. I love how the shop owners don't make you feel bad for browsing, which I really appreciate. All in all, will always be back from time to time! read more

They're currently open appointment-only due to covid, but you can browse their unique collection of the strange/unusual/morbid/macabre on their online store. You'll find anything from taxidermy, to jewelry, skulls, antiques and more. Some stuff might not be up your alley, some stuff you'll find that you love more than you should, but either way, it will fascinate the hell out of you. I spent an hour plus browsing through their awesome selection, their Yelp page and Instagram, just to learn more about this Hampden oddity (and I say that in the most endearing way). I've been trying to get into this place for years but it seems I always ended up in Hampden during times they were closed. I'm glad I finally was able to get in here and check our the unique gifts and oddities Bazaar has to offer! Spent a bunch of time just admiring some of the different pieces and the history behind it. I'm big into photo and bought a few old timey photographs from their collection for a few bucks! Always crazy to me how things used to be done. I love this store. I have been a patron for years and have purchased many items that now take pride in place on my walls at home. But I can not in clear conscience give this store the five star rating that it deserves. My reasoning is as follows. 5 stars is a perfect rating which means that my experience should be perfect, and there is one aspect of the shopping experience in Bazaar that is sorely lacking--the customer service. Each time that I enter the store there is a nondescript human entity perched on a stool behind the counter with nose deep in his phone or ipad. Is it the same person each year? Heck if I know. He doesn't do anything distinct enough to make any lasting impression. There is no "hello" upon entering the shop or any recognition whatsoever that you have entered his space. There is no "let me know if you have any questions?" And bear in mind that this store is full of nothing but unique, question-invoking merchandise. When I approach the counter the entity says, "you ready?" as if every syllable past the first one was a titanic effort. In the past when I have attempted conversation with this or a similar nondescript entity my efforts were in vain. For example, according to the Perry Hall historical society the Ouija board was invented in the home currently owned by my parents. I have never been able to confirm or deny this, and thought that this individual, who was propped on a glass case full of vintage ouija boards and planchettes, may have been able to shed light on this subject--or at the every least would be interested in this tidbit. Neither. I might as well have told him that my psoriasis was flaring up for all the enthusiasm he mustered. Why I ask? And if the purveyor reads this I invite an explanation. Is there a perception amongst young people that being stand-offish somehow equates to hip and cool? Or is it that I am a 50 year old man and too unhip to warrant interaction? I am truly curious because whatever you are trying to achieve with this behavior, the net result is rudeness and disinterest. Is that your goal? The retail business is more than assembling a bunch of cool crap in a storefront. It is also engaging with your customers and fostering interest in your wares by inviting questions. Dare I say even smiling once in a great while. You have the first part down pat. I suggest you work on the second. read more

Turn of the century prescriptions for opiates? Check. Air plants or Victorian mourning jewellery? Yes! Vintage photograph of a patient diagnosed with elephantiasis. Did you need one or two? Even if you aren't currently in the market for a human skull, quack medical device, taxidermy specimen or turn of the century portrait there is something to grab your interest, pry open your wallet and, at the very least, pique your sense of curiosity. They also offer the occasional class and are always happy to answer any question(s) you may have. Bazaar really a must see destination if you find yourself in Hampden. Gulp. I am at a loss for words, which basically never happens. I was so excited to see a new business today on Chestnut, but do not know how to 'classify' this new shop, so someone else will have to do it for me. I dare you. ATTN: VEGETARIANS, VEGANS, ANIMAL LOVERS: DO NOT ENTER. ALSO NOT A GOOD OR APPROPRIATE PLACE TO TAKE CHILDREN. Lots of dead things, taxidermy, stuffed things that used to be living, bats under glass, skulls, furs, etc. If these things sound appealing to you, you will love this place. I, however, had to fight the urge to vomit after leaving and couldn't eat for hours (another thing that basically never happens). Some things can't be unseen and I think this store should come with a warning sign. The two guys working there were very nice. read more

This place is really cool! There's so many air plants available here, the various (large) sizes are impressive! I was also able to purchase a marimo ball & a rose of Jericho! I've been looking everywhere online for marimo balls, but none of the suppliers seemed reputable. I'm SO glad 'Bazaar' has them for sale! My marimo ball is thriving at its new home with me! The rose of Jericho was also such a pleasant surprise, I've known of them for over a year now but never looked for them online because I assumed it would be a dead end. My first visit to 'Bazaar' was excellent, I can't wait to visit again & again & again! This place is awesome!! It's one of a kind, you will not regret coming here! This tiny shop is carefully curated with antique photographs of graphic subject matter, taxidermied creatures both real and imagined, skulls, creatures suspended in solution, jewelry, postcards, and related ephemera. Such a unique, fun, and weird store- really perfect for Hampden and for bringing people from out of town to check it out. LOCATION: It's few doors from the Charmery if you are walking away from the avenue. SELECTION: Filled with taxidermy from smaller animals to large heads. They also have "creepy baby" sculptures, a wide selection of animal skulls and bones, and even Victorian Hair Art! There's something for everyone and I would highly recommend stopping here if you are looking for a birthday or Christmas gift. They also have posters and other small trinkets (that aren't made out of animals). I was very impressed with their collection of preserved butterflies and moths. Not to mention, I bought a pair of coyote teeth earrings that I wear EVERY DAY and they have held up for almost 6 months now! PRICING: Very affordable and reasonable. I was eyeing their preserved bats and coyote skulls and thought I would do some comparison with online sources and eBay. Their prices are in the same ballpark as anything you can find online, if not cheaper. The upside is that you can actually pick everything up in the store. SERVICE: Everyone that I have talked to in the store is very friendly, but not intrusive at all. If you have any questions, they are very eager to help. Unique, weird and peculiar store! We had a few hours to kill before heading back to the airport and this was on my list of something cool to visit while we were in the area. Lots of unusual stuff to look at and prices were very reasonable. Lots of little trinkets, posters, old school medical items. Great gift ideas! The store was a lot smaller than I thought from looking at their pictures online. It got kinda crowded while we were in and lots of shuffling around people. Unfortunately, couldn't take a lot on the plane with us so just got a few small items my son was eyeing to decorate his room with and a llama for his friend lol. Definitely recommend checking it out though if you are in the area. read more

Omfg this place is best for weirdos like me! They have so many wonderful things - air plants for plain people, sheep hearts and fetuses for the awesome ones. This store is the science/anatomy/medical heaven for anybody. You don't need to know anything about the stuff being sold, its just cool. There were all kinds of medical oddities and preserved "specimens". There is also a little air plant / terrarium corner if you don't want to buy anything dead... If you have ever been to the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia and you wanted to buy the display items well look no further. Was visiting my parents and stopped by Bazaar and boy what a fun treat I was in for. I'm from Los Angeles, taxidermy and other specimens are usually overpriced or poorly made. Bazaar has excellent prices and quite the variety. The employees here were very friendly. I purchased two wet specimens and a poster. I wish this place wasn't on the other side of the country for me. I love this store!!! If you love the Mutter Museum, you need to stop in here. I use to have to drive to Philly for any good oddity stores, since all of the good ones had closed in Maryland years ago. I have been able to find many a gift for my girlfriend here. The people who run the store are always very nice and the store always has an interesting rotation of stock. read more

Driving up to the shop from DC, I was concerned I'd spend an hour on the road and about 20 minutes in the shop. I ended up spending at least an hour in their relatively small shop taking every thing in and could have stayed longer. They have an awesome collection (check out their website or their instagram @bazaarbaltimore for an idea) and it was difficult to resist emptying my wallet. Where else can you get Miss Cleo tarot cards, a jackalope, and a polearm? Brian was greatly helpful and friendly during my visit and I certainly look forward to making the trip again! When I'm in the mood for a little creepy crawly type stuff, (which is pretty much all of the time!) I take my friends to Bazaar because they have everything you could want for a spooky yet awesome time. So many taxidermied animals with neat history, and I'm not just talking about a fox or mice, but all sorts of odd animals! From wall taxidermy to specimens in jars, there are so many species to look at in the store, it feels like a little Menagerie! I did feel guilty at first, I love animals alive more than I do stuffed, but I don't believe any were harmed directly for being sold in this place, and a lot of people like to have them to study and enjoy so always makes me feel better:) Friendly staff and beautiful succulents too! The owners take great care in verifying the provenance of each item, and I think it's wonderful that they try to cater to varying interests and price points. There is no pretentiousness or stuffiness, Greg and Brian are happy to answer questions with patience and kindness. What goes on here: lots of neat antiques that are mostly medical although some are obviously just interesting finds, there's taxidermy and preserved animals (I really like the mud puppy), and other odds/ends/trinkets. Folks that own the place are quite pleasant. No "Bawlmer" or "Hon" swag, or any of the other nonsense that one would generally expect from the Avenue. I think Bazaar is wonderful. There is some beautiful and weird taxidermy (foxes, bats, birds), bones, x-rays, vintage children's masks, new macabre art, insect collections, funeral paraphernalia, vintage medical kits, vintage educational pieces, some lovely air plants, a bit of new jewelry, and gall stones! And, yes, some specimens in jars (fetal pig, large worm, rat, etc.) Bazaar also carries a line of Accoutrements products that fit into the novelty item category: soap shaped like hands, giant plastic ears that look nice on the wall, plastic finger hooks, etc. The guys running Bazaar are very friendly and knowledgeable and the prices are quite reasonable. The store is very clean and tastefully done. Some might be turned off or grossed out by the stock at Bazaar. It's just not what people are used to seeing in every day life. I personally have never been wild about specimens in jars, for example. But, frankly, you tend experience a wide range of emotions while viewing a collection like this. Some items will make you laugh and others will amaze you and that just makes the store all the more fun and unique. Besides, it's very similar to a museum, a way to learn about zoology, anatomy and medical history. If this sounds at all interesting to you, GO THERE IMMEDIATELY. Like I said, the prices are reasonable and stuff is likely to get snatched up. But even if you're not in the market for starting or building on your collection, it's worth stopping by just to see all of their cool stuff. It's definitely worth the trip and soon there will be an ice cream shop opening on the corner in the space of an old pharmacy. And, of course, there is the rest of the Avenue on 36th to ponder just a stone's throw away. read more
