Upset with my first trip to a Homegoods in San Rafael. I would have given this place 5 stars for the cleanliness, overwhelming things to buy as I was a kid in a candy store being very excited. Maybe because I was an easy target the bad customers wanted my cart items and wanted me to be frantic which they got their wish. Then 2 things destroyed my visit here. I left my cart with some cookies that only had one left on the shelf so I was excited . I made the mistake of leaving my cart on corner of store and did a sprint to explore each aisle one by one as I wanted to see what this store had and having a cart with me would slow me down. I also took a day off to head up north for an event and this was supposed to be a quick hour stop. After I was done about 20 minutes, I went back to look for my cart and it was gone. I doubted myself and backtracked where I was. I am sure others in store was wondering what I was doing holding a bottle and a box of cookies in my hand running around. I was getting extremely frustrated and mad how someone stole my cart and took my items! I decided to give up and I wasted more time here than expected which made me late to my next destination. 2. As I gave up my search for the cart I was only able to use my brand new $25 gift card on $15 worth of items I was able to find, since I lost the other half. The cashier called me and had problem ringing up my gift card. She reset everything and gave me my receipt and didn't return my gift card. I asked where's my card and she said it was empty. I was shocked and confused. I didn't know what to do. I didn't keep my original gift card envelope and I never scratched the code behind the card either. My mind was not in a right place as I was hungry and late for lunch. So I left. She had a lady behind her watching her 2 cashiers and she never came forward to help. So staff here are not efficient. Later as I went another hour north and finally ate lunch to be less dizzy, I studied my receipt and it said it had about $15 left on gift card. If I do go back, later will they believe me as I already left? I give up. This is ridiculous and I am too tired. 3. So much items in this store that it was dangerous as times were stuffed on shelves very tight and when you grab one item, then everything falls. It happened to two people and I helped them pick up the stuff and put back on shelf. So these 3 key points brought down my original 5 stars which I would have given. First time here. Was excited to find a store in the greater bay area (not the East bay). I had my list all ready to have a shopping spree. Grabbed my cart and off I went. More than 1/3 of the store is dedicated to Christmas. Maybe even more. ALL the shelves are overstocked, so stuff is falling off or laying on the floor. LOTS of merchandise was scattered all over the store and not necessarily in the right place. Which means there are a lot of go-backs. I could have filled 1/2 a cart just with this. I ran into at least a 1/2 dozen carts strewn in the aisles, some had merchandise and none were attended by a shopper. I had to be very careful where I stepped so I didn't trip, again, do to the amount of merchandise on the floor. After about an hour and seeking out every aisle for my 20 items, I returned the empty cart to the front of the store and walked out. It was akin to Ross downtown San Francisco on steroids in respect to the horrible condition the store was in. I truly did not expect this in "Marin" of all places. So I won't be wasting my gas to drive over from the city for this. The one in Sand City outside of Monterey is FAB. Next trip to Monterey, I shall spend my hard earned money elsewhere. Well, that person was on break so I waited the 10 minutes and came back. The person had not addressed the price inquiry, so the cashier radioed the associate again...the manager over heard since he was unpacking $1.99 store tote bags (one at a time mind you) at the checkout line, so they then radioed the associate themself and asked them to find a tag for a rug that was $79. This Homegoods is located in a plaza in San Rafael that looks like it's part of a bygone area, but unfortunately there are very few HomeGoods options close to SF. Still, this location came through for some Halloween decorations this year. My partner and I visited here in late September and Homegoods had a generous selection of Halloween items (though Xmas was already sneaking in). As to be expected, it was less decorations than it was housewares (think blankets, table cloths, etc.) but there were plenty of fun ghosts, skeletons, witches, black cats, and the like. Otherwise, the store has a lot of affordable kitchen and general home items that can help fill in gaps. The line can get a little long depending on when you're there, but they were pretty responsive with adding more cashiers. If this area is close to you, probably worth checking out. If not, I wouldn't go out of the way. read more

I did not receive any help when I asked a young employee female. I believe her name was ashly. She rolled her eyes while scanning merchandise. NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. A friend of mine recently took it upon herself to remodel my living room. According to her, it needed a "woman's touch." I told her that I had a very tiny budget for any kind of interior re-design. She assured me that for under $500 she could guarantee me a whole "Trading Spaces/Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" kind of experience. Needless to say, I had to take her up on the challenge. Sure enough, she came in gave my old living room a much-needed cosmetic make-over (and for just $440). So how did she accomplish this? Simple answer: she purchased stuff at HomeGoods in San Rafael. She got me a rolling bar-cart; a number of colorful throw-pillows and home accents (eg candle sticks, a set of decorative antlers; vases; table lamps; and some other creative knick-knacks). The end result is a living room that I'm now proud to live in. No joke (see attached photo). My friend gave me an apartment make-over for under $500, and it's mostly thanks to the fine goods she purchased at HomeGoods! The cashier who rang us up couldn't tell the difference between a $10 and a $5 bill and had a difficult time fixing her error. I've my last receipt from here taped up onto my wall. RIP Home goods store I wrote beneath it when Carona started. I knew it'd be hard for me. How hard I never imagined... When you're a hoarder, this is your place your jam your fix. When you own 8 peelers and find a reason to buy a 9th-well this one is serrated and juliennes green beans AND peels? Oh that's a must have add to the collection. Name the kitchen item and I've got it. May have used it only once some of these but I've got it just in case. Who doesn't need a prong tool for caper removal? Or the ability to sous vide that rough cut. The cute mug with the inside lined yellow that says "peep show"-get it? Easter. Chickens. Yellow eggs. I don't buy clothes I buy kitchen utensils and all other necessary items for a well-stocked kitchen. Stop scoffing. Go and you'll see. Need pillows and towels or candles and caramels? Home Goods has got you covered. I could give tours I've been so often. Lotions and potions and bathroom storage and cookie sheets and knives and little kids toys-yes not a spelling error-and doggie treats and and and. Having a party? Placemats glasses tablecloths funky candelabras interesting olive oils and pastas! And here's the best part: the selection is not only interesting but the prices are fantastic. Usually HomeGoods to me is like a candy store to a child! I was severely disappointed with this messy location. It resembles a sad ross while the prices are 2-3x higher. At 6pm on a weekday, the store was almost empty and very disorganized, giving to the apocalyptic feeling. I was almost expecting walking dead to start jumping out of the halloween decor section. Even the staff seemed super indifferent. I still made out with a beautiful hamper basket for $20 but it took a long time to choose one as they were sprung out over several different isles.I hope this place gets better because I'd be a regular! read more

For example, the patio decor and outdoor stuff is randomly in like 10 different aisles across the store. There was a mess in many of the aisles so my basket couldn't even go down. This store is quite nice and my mom loves shopping at these home decorative stores. Although, what we don't like is someone pushing us so heavily to get a credit card under our name. It felt very overwhelming and I felt like I was constantly getting followed by a salesperson, while we were shopping along the aisles. Aside from that, one of the workers helped me pull down a nightstand I was thinking of buying, but the piece of furniture fell on his head and the drawer broke from underneath. TLDR; Great prices, nice things, shitty store, shitty people This is one of those places that left me conflicted. I got what I needed but I left dissatisfied. That doesn't usually happen. The prices at HomeGoods were overly-reasonable. I can't argue there. I love paying less and getting good quality stuff. Being from LA there was no shortage of that there, but after moving to Marin, I lost sight of that idea because discount stores are few and far between. This reminded me of what it was like to be able to furnish an entire room for a couple hundred bucks. I will be back. There is a lot of work to be done in my home. I fell in love with a lot of the stuff I saw here. Here's my experience: I walked in and was amazed at how big this store is and how much stuff it had. They even had some really good munchies for sale. I knew when I saw it that I'm gonna need a cart. I get one and realize there was no path to drive this thing lol I was here for a set of curtains, a rod and possibly a rug if I see one I like. I kinda took the scenic route and navigated my way around to the window dressings by avoiding aisles with people and debris. I finally made it and became "that lady blocking the whole aisle with a cart". Sorry. The selection of curtains was a mixture of good and bad. There was no organization whatsoever. There was stuff piled up on the floor and things hung up randomly. I did find a few sets of nice looking sheer curtains for $16.99 each. Like I said great prices! The rods were $13.99. Some were broken and shitty looking and also thrown into a pile on the floor in the aisle. I found a few nice ones, picked one out and moved on. I left the window dressing aisle feeling like... you know when you use a public bathroom and it's all shitty but you have to use it anyway, then someone is waiting outside to use it next. You're kinda like "sorry but I didn't do it" and you know they think it was you. As I was making my way around the furniture to the check out line, I saw a nice rug. I wasn't sold yet because I saw online that Michael's across the street has rugs. I get to the check out. Gloria is helping me. She is scanning my items and I ask her if she knows whether this rod comes with the screws and whatever I need to hang it. It says on the box I need a screwdriver/drill, but I wasn't sure about the screws. She looks at me like I just lit up a crackpipe in her store. "The screws????? To hang it???? I don't THINK so." Whoa. Did I just enter the Twilight zone? "Yeah you know the screws?" She asks another guy behind the counter next to her. He's like "I have no idea but you can open it and check" Fair enough. We open the box, it does come with the screws. I had to ask him if he could close it back up though because you know how it is to put something back in the box. Great, so moving on. I go across the street and they have only outdoor rugs. I come back to HomeGoods about 15 min later. I ask Gloria if she can help me get a rug. I go stand next to the rug I like and couple min later someone shows up. I can't remember his name so we'll call him "Rug Guy With Better Shit To Do". I tell him I like this rug. He starts to take it down. Before he does, I ask him if they have another one like it, because this one has some crusty shit all over it. I could see the fibers all matted up in one area, in the shape of a handprint and when I touched it I immediately wanted to burn my hand off. He gives me the Gloria look. He says "No." I say "You don't have ANYTHING similar at all?" "No." "Hmm." I stand silently for about 3 seconds thinking about how to proceed. Rug Guy With Better Shit To Do says "Soooo, do you still need me or can I go?" I've never been asked that before by someone in customer service. He didn't even care that there was some funk on this rug and someone might buy it, not knowing that. Or that I obviously needed help figuring out a solution to this problem. I tell him to wait and look through more rugs. He says "Well, there's this one" It's exactly the same rug only smaller. Why didn't he mention it when I asked if he had anything similar? Then he shows me another one that is larger. Why didn't he.... nevermind. I found one that'll do and was the right size. He got it for me and Rug Guy With Better Shit To Do, let's not meet again. read more

San Rafael just scored something great! Home Goods is a great place to get unique home furnishings and decor for truly low prices. Forget going to IKEA in Emeryville for cheap junk that will soon fall apart. Forget going to Pier One Imports - nothing they have really stands out anymore, and it's no surprise they keep closing locations around Marin to re-open, and close again. Heck, even Cost Plus is going to have a run for their money and would be better off focusing on their wine and imported foods instead. Home Goods is a division of Marshalls (which can be good for clothes if you look hard) and TJMaxx (I've never been a fan, but they must do it for some people). This location was formerly an oversized Rite Aid store from the late 1960's that was scheduled for demolition when Northgate did it's 3rd major renovation in 2009. Instead of it being bulldozed for parking, the place sat empty for five years until Northgate *FINALLY* got something right and put this here. The place is filled with tons of stuff that you WANT or have never seen before - and they have it all at great prices. One tip - the front parking lot is completely full often, so, (as in my case), if you get a larger piece of furniture like a corner accent table - WATCH OUT - the shopping cart you are hauling towards Macy's (where there is plenty of parking because they pretty much suck) - will STOP right at the yellow line. **Screech!!*** Me "Crap. Okay, I'll grab the artwork, soap dispenser, and small printer table & make a run for it across the parking lot while I leave my new bedroom corner nightstand in the cart at the yellow line. If anyone tries to steal my new awesome piece of furniture in the 2 minutes I am running and driving back to Home Goods - something BAD is going to go down right at the yellow line! We live in Terralinda and this is a great addition to our neighborhood. The closest thing to Gone Goods would be bed bath and beyond but that's in Larkspur and is considerably more expensive. The display of items is a little haphazard so you have to hunt around a bit to find what you're looking for. It sure beats the empty storefront that had been here for five years. read more
