They quoted me $75 for delivery, which has been the standard for all of their competitors to deliver to my home, then the next day I received a text saying the delivery charge would be $200. I am not sure if they are subbing out their delivery to a 3rd party, but I have never had to pay anything other than $200, and I have had a lot of stuff delivered to this address. I don't recommend that you waste your time. read more

Downtown Lumber does it all! I'm not so handy when it comes to home repair, renovations or DIY. So, I'm constantly looking for the plumber or electrician who isn't going to rip you off and isn't going to take 3 trips on your dime to fix minor things. I found Downtown lumber as a dealer of some top of the line bathroom fixtures. With all the condo's going in downtown, this is your place for one-stop shopping! Tino was able to organize all the materials we needed, giving us prices and making sure we thought of everything. John is the guy who makes sure the plumber comes in after the electrician has set up his work. The process took a lot longer than expected- something any reno is likely to run into. Some of the delays were our fault, occasionally we felt they could have come a bit sooner. We would highly recommend them to anyone for small or big jobs. read more

Downtown Lumber & Building Supplies - AFTER - Hardware Stores Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

See all

Two extremely un-handy people move in together. Hilarity and handy.com on the proverbial speed-dial ensue. Hoh-lee craaap. I've made a lot of trips to this hardware store, and my best bud has made even more. We slowly realized we needed one of every tool, screw, nail and hook known to man, and naturally we realized them one at a time. Enter agonizing trip after agonizing trip across the street to Home Hardware. But here's the thing, the people at this Home Hardware are so lovely it wasn't nearly as painful as it could have been. Unfortunately, though they're all very nice, not all of them are experts on all things tools. You're looking for the dark-haired thin man. No, he's not a villain in a Charlie's Angel's reboot, he's the guy who knows what's up. They have everything you're looking for, and if they don't, they (well, he'll) help you find it elsewhere by writing down exactly what you're looking for. Hanging a TV on a drywall wall without studs that is secretly covering up decaying brick can be a harrowing experience. I wish your relationship well as you tackle it together. read more

Home Hardware Building Centre is one of the last few actual businesses on the Ossington strip that doesn't involve getting drunk and falling after your visit. it's crazy, I know. The men in my family have been tinkerers and fixers of all things great and small for as long as my grand father can remember so tools are in my blood and I love hardware stores, well good ones anyway, and this is a fine store. I recently went in to buy some paint and the gentleman that helped me was great. He put up with my unpreparedness with patience and a smile while I struggled to figure out which shade of "popcorn" paint I was supposed to be picking up. Just so you know, there were 477 in the catalogue with the word popcorn in them so I can see how it would frustrate some people. This isn't a huge store compared to the ones you'll see in the suburbs but it is a good size for Toronto and they have a wide selection of goods. Paint and garden supplies to tools and bathroom fixtures line the shelves of a well stocked store fit to handle just about any need. The location is convenient for me as it's about a fifteen minute walk from my house and I can carry just about anything I buy home. There is street parking available and parking in the rear (at least I think I saw a sign that said there was parking available) which saves you having to lug things too large to carry back to your car a block away. read more

This place is awesome. The staff working here know what they're doing and are very patient with us DIY'ers that come in and have tons of basic questions. There's a shorter balding man in particular who is absolutely wonderful in helping out. The big surprise: they have a full lumberyard down the alley behind it. Reasonable prices for lumber right off the Ossington strip. How many times did I walk by this place without knowing that? They have all the essentials and some extras. I've mostly used them for the basic hardware supplies and lumber, but they have a full set up for paint and carry quite a range of high-end kitchen and bath fixtures. Skip renting a car to drive to Home Depot. You may find just what you need down the street! read more

If I'd known about this place I'd never have set foot in a Home Depot. With Home Depot 25 minutes away it just seemed like the thing to do. Maybe it was the modest-sized storefront of this Home Hardware that made me think I couldn't get what I need there. What I didn't realize is that not only is their assortment of merchandise genius-ly managed but they also have a big lumber building down the alley in the back. There is also free parking in the back. I walked in last week with a list of six items, including drywall anchors to mount a TV on my wall, lumber to make a lollypop tree for a fun fair, and a bathroom vanity top. The first person I saw looked like he couldn't be more than 22 but I didn't want to judge based on his youth so when he asked if he could help I just launched into my items, one by one. He ran me through options, made recommendations and got me through all six items, including one job that after talking it through we decided together I'd be better of with a handyman. For that he gave me the number of a good local handyman. If you've shopped at Home Depot lately you will recognize how massively different this experience is from what happens at Home Depot. There's just no comparison. This Home Hardware is an absolute gem and I will never go to another hardware store again. read more

I come in looking to replace a home 40 watt tube light bulb bright and early in the morning. There are around five staff members on the floor. One girl walks me to the lighting section and shows me the same bulb that will replace my existing one. I ask "Do you have energy efficient versions of that bulb" She says "I don't know. We don't sell any" I ask "Do they make them" She says "We don't sell them" I say "Yup, I got that, do you know if they make this kind of bulb in an energy efficient one. You have some of the other kinds of bulbs on the floor". She says "If we don't sell them, I don't know". Full conversation is overheard by all the staff, not one of them attempts to help or provide direction. * Could she have said, "Let me see and order it in for you". or "Let me see and direct you to a place that does".....Nope. I walk out with my burnt bulb, no help and no intentions of ever returning to buy all the things I need for the new home I just bought. Such a shame. I was hoping it would be my local spot....Off I go to Canadian Tire or Home Depot. read more

Yah! The people are great and it's super convenient for diy people like me. Lumber ! Hardware! I love them.

This review refers to the bathroom and tile section of the store. The man who works there is incredibly knowledgeable. As a newbie trying to redo my bathroom, i'm not a contractor so obviously there are some things i just don't instinctively think about, like how the finish on the white bathtub needs to match the white toilet, to me white is white is white. of course this is untrue. Anyways, i digress. I came here today and purchased some pretty big ticket items, a new tub, drain, toilet, vanity, shower head, and all my faucets. The guy was incredibly helpful, and he just KNEW everything. For example, building code - my bathroom is very small so after picking my tub i only had a small amount of room to play with for my vanity and toilet. However building code requires 28 inches clearance for the toilet so we picked another tub and vanity based on that. Had he not been there, i would have had a bathroom that would not have met code meaning i would have to rip it out for a redo. Also, i just described what i was looking for in a totally inexperienced semi-valley girlish way (e.g. "so i want a faucet that is, kind of like, a waterfall? i guess...not like a normal tap that's boring. Oh and i'd like it to be, like, kind of square-ish."), and next thing you know he's showing me my exact faucet. There were 2-3 that were similar so he went through and explained them to me and the differences. The one i choose also had matched shower head/shower stuff so that was fantastic. I could go on and on. I've been here twice and dealt with the same man. He was very attentive to my timelines and made me feel really comfortable when things would be at my door. During this whole time looking at Rone, Home Depot, Canadian tire etc for bathroom stuff, This place really blew the competition out of the water. They really take the time to help you figure out style at a reasonable cost. I'm very happy with the service here. Additional awesome: Delivery is also free. You pay half on ordering and the other half upon delivery. read more

This is a home reno supply store, similar to a Home Depot in the middle of Little Portugal. But unlike Home Depot's gaudy orange and grey monstrosities of warehouses, this supply store is jam packed with aisles brimming with essentials. Walking around, it's like you're in a maze with more cool stuff waiting around the next corner. They have sections devoted to different aspects of building things with staff on hand to answer questions. The check out counter is well staffed and right by the entrance making it easy to park right in front on Ossington, jump in the store and quickly dash away. What is super impressive is their bathroom piece selection. Upstairs they have a showroom with modern freestanding bathtubs and fancy showerheads and kitchen sinks lined up showcasing beautiful design. If anyone knows ceramic tile, the Portuguese know it better than anyone. The selection is fantastic! The mecca in the GTA is Olympic tile, but after going thru Olympic, Downtown Lumber won out with its tight selection of choice tile designs and helpful staff. There is even free customer parking right behind the store where a tight laneway leads you to almost valet style parking, very nice! When your order for lumber, cement, or tile is filled at the service counter in the store, you take the invoice down the back laneway where the warehouse is tucked away. After a couple visits I was most impressed how the guy back there immediately came out to fill my order after driving into the tight spot. And he even loaded up the heavy tile into the car (they also deliver!). Super service from some incredible and dedicated people. Thumbs up Downtown Lumber! read more

Bring your tape measure to the lumberyard, especially if you're paying for cuts. Unpleasant place.

boo another home hardware disappointment. The service is awful, I had to track someone down and they just pointed to where I should go. There were so many employees just hanging out not helping anyone. When I asked for spacers for a pegboard the owner (or he looked like he was the owner at least) looked at me like I was crazy. I have since taken to google and this seems to be a real item, I understand if they don't have any of them but don't treat me like I don't know what I'm doing!! read more

The folks at the Morrow Street yard are always pleasant. We have bought 90% of our lumber for our home improvements from them. The only thing is that they do not have a wall saw, so if you need anything ripped lengthwise, you may want to look elsewhere. read more

This place rocks. I've been to enough hardware DIY stores where I feel like I know more than the person trying to help me. And I don't know that much about hardware. Really refreshing to go somewhere where people clearly know their business inside out and seem truly glad to help. Don't see any reason I'd go anywhere else for parts or advice. read more

The sales desk guys are awesome and very helpful and nice. It seems small but they pack a lot into a tiny space. The yard guys are hit or miss. It's a beauty spot, good lumber, good service. Parking is tight but neighbouring street will help you. If you don't know what you need, ask, they'll tell or find it for you. Pay at cash, drive into yard, drive out. There's no load your cart, pay, now load your car (like those other guys). This place has a one time load. read more

I have used downtown for over 10 years for various home renovations and repairs. I find them knowledgeable and helpful as well they are available unlike the big box stores. Ask them and they will give honest answers read more

The girl on the phone was really nice, Christy or something along those lines, but boy are the in-store employees awful. They just don't care, the cashier didn't say a word to me processing my order, weird as hell. read more

I was feeling very discouraged after going to Home Depot and Rona for bathroom wall tiles. The selection was extremely poor and i could not find anything inspiring or that i liked. Then my husband brought me to this Home Hardware and I was blown away by the selection. They have so many sample suites set up, so you get to actually see a big picture of what the tiles will look like in the room. They had a suite set up with a cabinet very similar to mine, and i ended up buying the same tile they had used as I loved the way it looked. I also bought the trim, shower floor tiles, grout, and a toilet. The woman who helped us was very knowledgeable, patient, and knew exactly what she was talking about. When it came to choosing the toilet, she should us 4 that were best (for a basement bathroom), explained their similarities and differences, with out ever pressuring us to buy the most expensive one. Another Perk - they had everything i needed in stock... this was not the case at some other places, where you have to wait for a shipment, and then pay $50 for delivery. I will definetly return to this location, which is a good 10 minute ride from my house. read more

This is an excellent store. We were traveling way up north for tiles and here downtown they have an excellent selection and staff with all the expertise we needed. read more

RUN to the big box stores who know a thing or two about customer - centric service. Spent a significant amount of dinero here a few years back...now certain bathroom items need repair from shower heads to toilet stops. This small staff appear lost in their lack of listening to the customer taking several calls to them to get the necessary reorder of said items...correct. Then, it was up to us to remind them of said order. Lost in the shuffle I guess? Showed up at the store on a non-busy Saturday a.m. finding myself waiting for 10 mins before i had to almost call out an exclamation remark to have someone help me. Btw - there were five staff standing around cackling about last Friday night's big party I reckon? read more

Downtown Lumber offers way more than you might think. Incredible selection of good quality and well priced bathroom vanities (some locally made so ask the guys in tile section). Fairly good selection of tile at almost half the price as other big tile stores (especially the glass mosaics). Neptune bath tubs, Riobel faucets, Toto Toilets, etc. The staff know there stuff. The place is hopping so you may have to wait for a staff member but it is worth it! Bring your questions because you will be asking true experts. Highly recommend. read more

I love my neighbourhood Parkdale HH store for the helpful staff and variety of products, but it's a smaller location and they don't have everything, so I went to the larger Ossington location to find some insulation board. There were five or six employees behind the counter, some of them helping customers and some just standing around...after waiting several minutes to make sure someone was free I asked if they carried a certain insulation board. No one seemed to know if they carried it or what the specs were on an alternative product....I asked if they could look it up on their database and the guy didn't even answer...just started looking in a drawer....someone else overheard and started looking the info up on the computer, but (I guess) he didn't find it...they both just shrugged and seemed to get distracted with something else. They seemed pretty confused and were definitely unhelpful. For larger or more specialized needs I've had better service at the Riverdale Home Depot, where, even thought they have fewer employees per square foot, they always try to get an answer to your question. read more
