I have found the staff there very accommodating and pleasant to deal with, even when I was inconveniencing them. However, I don't like going there and usually go to the Home Hardware on Yonge Street just south of St. Clair. The bad impression that I and other reviewers have received at Vaughan is down to one individual who sems to have a problem beyond how he feels about customers. I would give this place negative 5 stars if I could. I returned a tool that was NEVER used and this racist, sexist idiot calls me "fucking useless". This is exactly why I go to Home Depot, where returning something isn't an issue, where they don't sell garbage products for crappier prices. After he called me "fucking useless", he said, "don't buy tools you don't know how to use". So a little description here, I am an Asian female. But little did he know, I'm actually a contractor. This store was closest to my job site and I needed a rotary saw but the best they had was some toy jig saw that wouldn't work for the project, so I returned it and got insulted by him. I'm sure that if one of my white male employees were to go in to return a tool, this would've been a very different scenario. On top of calling me "fucking useless" and "don't buy tools you don't know how to use", when I told him he was racist and sexist, after agreeing with me, he tried to take the credit card machine from me and deny me my refund. I had to grab it back from him and tap my credit card to get my refund. That was illegal what he did. I've contacted Home Hardware's head office but they have not responded and/or have done anything about it. They pride themselves on being Canadian but then act racist and sexist. Supporting this business is supporting a self proclaimed racist, since on video, where I recorded the incident, he admitted saying, "yah, I'm a little racist". read more

When I wrote the previous review, I'd been a customer for a few weeks. Almost two years later, I must lower my rating to the lowest. Here's why. If small local businesses are to survive, they should excel at what big ones don't: customer service. Especially if they know the customer, as I'm sure they know me at Hillcrest Pro Hardware. Yet these guys seldom say hi, never smile, and can be downright rude if you have a return or walk in 5 minutes before they close, which I did last week because the door was wide open and I missed the sign. It's not just me, either: the two guys who work there most of the time only become somewhat animated when buddies drop in. The rest of the time, they suck. A video store that used be around the corner had the same problem. Now they're closed. Hillcrest Pro Hardware should take cue. Meanwhile, I'm taking my money elsewhere. UPDATE: Someone I'd never met before took the time to email me after reading this review. This person suffered very poor customer service at Hillcrest, where someone apparently gave them attitude because they wanted to return an item, one with a low price tag to boot. read more

First of all I am an extremely easy going person. I've had many bad experiences at stores and usually just brush them off. The staff at this store prompted me to create a Yelp account just to make a negative review. I called 10 minutes before they closed and the guy told me I could come pick up some paint before they closed. 6 minutes later I show up as he's closing and as I open the door he looks me in the eyes and says F*%# I HATE PEOPLE. Then proceeds to go get the paint and say it's now cash only, something he did not previously mention. I said I didn't have cash and he actually told me to get the F%#* out of his store. Don't bother with this place unless you want to be yelled at and sworn at by a 65 year old man who acts like a 4 year old boy. read more

I am shocked by all these negative reviews. I have only dealt with the older gentleman and have been in there often. Every single time I have needed help, and every time he has gone out of his way to help me. The other day I went in to buy a clamp for my walker, expecting to pay for it and then would figure out how to attach it when I got home. Without my even asking he went ahead and did the work for me. Another time he spent around a half an hour trying to help another issue I had. He has gone out of his way, at least three times, to help me out. read more

"Don't come back here" were the last words I heard from one of the managers when my boyfriend came to return a defective product. The management at this store is incompetent and customer service is non-existent. I first came here several years ago when I moved to the neighbourhood. I remember feeling that being a woman disqualified me from entering a hardware store and asking questions about products. Now I realize that being a person in general is sufficient to make you feel unwanted. They don't like people here and they are not going out of their way to assist you. There is one nice guy (the young one) but the rest of them are useless and they don't know how to run a business. They will ignore customers, fire back rude comments, and sit around reading newspapers while patrons look for items in their store. No more. I have been here a couple times, mostly for things I didn't need help with (bathtub plug, kitchenwares etc.) so I never needed customer service. No one had ever acknowledged me or said hello, but I didn't need them so who cares. Today I needed help with a shower head plumbing issue. I could have gone to Canadian Tire or Home Depot, but I like to shop local, so I went out of my way to visit this location. As usual, no one said hello, there were a few customers at the checkout so I stood and waited till he was done so I could ask for help. I explained what my problem was, and what I thought I needed in order to fix it. He looked at me like I had 2 heads, neither of which he thought had a brain in it and told me nothing like that exists. He didn't even attempt to ask me more questions to figure out if I had the wrong measurements or suggest another solution. So I walked out and headed all the way to Home Depot at The Stockyards and was able to find, in 2 seconds, a Home Depot expert plumber who took the time to understand my issue and give me a solution. I will not waste my time on this Home Hardware again! read more

Don't bother sending an email to " orders at home hardware" or whatever it is because they don't answer

One of the "employees" who works there was very rude to my mother. First, she asked him if she could ask him a question about bathtub glaze, to which he replied "yes." However, when she explained her question, he got mad really fast and suddenly didn't know anything about bathtub glaze. My mom was wondering if the chemical Methylene Chloride is still used in Canada in bathtub glaze. He then told her to call the landlord-tenant board, but she explained she didn't want to file a complaint. She explained that she was simply asking a question because she saw on the CDC website about the chemical being dangerous. He then basically mocked her by saying it's the government saying that, as if it was all a joke. Not sure if he was being rude to her because she's a woman or just because he is just a rude human being, but it's safe to say we will never be going there and using their services. read more

I paid for 4 keys to be copied. One was not correct and the owner straight refused to accept any responsibility. His words: "machines don't make mistakes." If you are looking for abuse, this is the place for you. Most other Yelp reviews for this store are spot on. Store is totally disorganized, stock is old, owner and his employees are from another age where confrontation is all you get. So surprised the Home Hardware System accepts this store as part of their operation. read more

I live nearby and shop here frequently. I spend money at this place because it is convenient, not drastically overpriced and decently-stocked for a hole in the wall. At a store this small, I don't need a smile or banter when I'm buying a mop or lawn seed. Don't need a free hug for buying ant traps. Don't mind the guys being cranky or distracted by baseball. But a couple of weeks ago I returned an item - totally legit return, not frivolous, $30+, not opened, they told me the product did something it didn't, it was their honest mistake - and they told me that I was wasting their time and costing them money. I was sworn at and told to take my receipt and get lost. That's not acceptable. This place is convenient, but I'm done with them for a while. read more

I live in the neighbourhood and have been to this store many times. The guys behind the counter are never friendly, I've come to expect and accept that, being this is the only hard wear store close to me. However, today I was treated with complete disrespect and will not be returning. I bought some brackets to hang a shelf which came to about $3.80. I was $1 short and had to use Interac. The guy behind the counter actually muttered "using Interac for $3.80, f-ing pisses me off." I smiled, thanked him and said I would not be returning. read more

This is a fantastic store--can get many things and the store will advise on how to do tasks. I so much prefer to the large box hardware stores where there is little help. It is my first go to store for hardware items, but also had some great its to make kitchen cupboards more organized. A great value to the neighbourhood. read more

So - I have been coming to this place since I was a kid and yes there is sometimes a grouchy owner (I have admittedly never had such terrible experiences as some of those listed so will consider myself lucky) - but I have also had AMAZING service here as well yes. Most recent example- I went to buy a battery for my electronic car key- the clerk offered to replace the new battery and dispose of the old one - Very kind I thought. THANK GOODNESS I accepted the offer as not only had I guessed the wrong battery size, but the key was ABSOLUTELY sealed closed with lock tight. Two clerks and a drill later and the key was opened and the Correct sized battery replaced (hoorah!). If I had gone home to do it I would still be there. I also appreciate that they never try and upsell you regardless of who you talk to, and they really have LOTS of great supplies to go along with fix it knowledge. I chalk it up to luck of the draw. I gave this place a 1 star because there isn't a 0 star option! Beware, don't come to this location. The employees basically don't give a s*#% about sales or customers. If you ask them a question (especially with one older gentleman) they often look at you like you're an idiot and sometimes just shake their head no and not verbally respond. I now know why home hardware went downhill and closed a large portion of their stores 20 years ago. read more

I've been shopping at this place since 1980 which is 32 yrs. For what it is and who they are, I couldn't want better in my neighbourhood. I recommend them highly and their departure would be a great loss to all of us. Never had trouble getting honest advice even when it meant not buying something there. read more

Just moved into the hood. I admit I was spoiled by my experience with the HH on Bloor close to Bathurst where everyone is super nice and helpful. This one is the complete opposite. First off, the store is pretty crappy in itself. I know it's a hardware store but even for that it is crappy. They have very little stuff there, bad selection, totally disorganized. And to top it off, the three people that I have met in my ten or so visits are all completely unwilling to help. They are usually behind the counter reading the newspaper and when you have a question about something don't expect them to jump out and show you things. In fact, be prepared to get an annoyed look and some rather grumpy general directions like "no idea what you want from me but maybe look in that corner over there" sort of stuff. I have never had a *good* experience there but until today they were at least not completely horrible and about 50% of the times I went I would somehow get what I needed (even though it took longer than it should have). Today the guy actually was so unhelpful to find a solution to a small problem it was unbelievable! It would have required to walk through the store with me and put a couple of things together. There was NOONE in the store at the time, mind you! No way! again, from his position behind the counter he'd direct me at some places in the store and when I came back to say that I cannot find what I need and if he could help me figure my problem out, he said he was alone in the store (which was true! The ONLY other person was me!) so he couldn't walk around with me. Keep in mind, the store is about 300 sq feet so hardly a big task. I said, "alright never mind" (I had it with this place right there) and while I was on my way out he yelled at me "get out of here" which I happily proceeded to do. I won't be back. An insane store, with a horrible vibe, crappy product selection, and zero interest in helping out. I'll have to go back to the Bloor store which is a lot further but in all other respects the complete opposite of this horrible place. Would give this a minus 5 if I could. STAY AWAY! read more
