290 College Street: we believe in supporting local, independent, retail so for the past 10+ years, my husband and I have gone out of our way to support Home Hardware on College. The service has never been great but working with the public can't be easy so we didn't think much of it. After today's experience, we will take our business elsewhere - anywhere but here. Yesterday I purchased a combination lock for my 10-year-old's school locker (her school is around the corner on Robert Street). When we got it home - despite many attempts - it wouldn't open. Just a dud. My 81-year-old mother-in-law was taking our daughter to school this morning and she offered to stop at the Home Hardware to exchange the lock and run the new one back to the school (it's my daughter's first locker and she's very excited about it). From the start, the woman behind the register was extremely rude for no apparent reason and the entire staff was unhelpful. After a lot of runaround (the cashier refused to examine or even touch the lock), a younger employee tried it and conceded the lock didn't work. My mother-in-law had the original receipt and simply asked to exchange it for a new one of the same make/model and try it in-store to make sure it worked. I guess it was a step too far to ensure that they aren't selling faulty products because this request made the woman shut down and aggressively ignore the 81-year-old woman standing in front of her who was just trying to do something nice for her granddaughter. Faulty merchandise, rude staff, and ageist to boot! Well done 290 College. And all over a $10 school lock. He is very polite, smart and professional he understand his job well. He did help me find the best material within my budget. He cut boards for me very careful. This Home Hardware location is special because it has a department for electronic hobbyists. If you are looking to experiment and build projects with electronic components, this is one of the places to check for those hard to find pieces. Arduino is proudly advertised on the storefront window, and if you want to jump start your projects, this controller board is what will help you on your way. They are behind the front counter ($25) and the staff will happily point you to the aisle of components and breadboards in the basement if you ask. I ordered a folding chair online however I had to add other items to my order to meet their 50 dollar minimum limit. After week they cancelled my order of the chair without any reason. So, I went to cancel the rest of my order since I only bought those items to meet their quota. After talking to their customer service twice, where they assured me that my order would be cancelled , I then received an email stating that my order is ready to pick up. I bought an abnormal outdoor lightbulb at Tucky HHW in London ont Sat dec 2. Before I bought this 30 dollar lightbulb I ASKED SPECIFICALLY as Tucky is not a close store to me do I need to bring it back there or can I return it to any home hardware with reciept if this doest fit if they had said no I wouldnt have purchased, they said yes np just have reciept ok fine. Went in to Dundas East HHW Sunday dec 3 at 230ish with a return had the package and reciept of a lightbulb unused that didnt fit into an unuasal opening I had bought day before. I bring back the package and the reciept next day to home hardware closest to me which is Dundas st East. I go in to and talk to what they laughably call "customer service" and a very indifferent 20 something male said nope its open cant return it head office wont accept it. You will have to return it to Tucky. I told him what I was told by Tucky and asked for him to explain why this wasnt returnable and he simply repeated condesendingly to me like I wasnt speaking the same English as he was take it back to Tucky with no explaination as to why I have to drive across town and why Tucky will take it but he wont. So I have to drive across town to Tucky to return this. I end up asking for a manager when I get there i am told there isnt one which is fair I guess on a sunday. A very angry and standoffish older lady named Sammy is rude with me and made it clear she couldnt care less as im explaining I was about to really lose it. Finally she gets someone from customer service to assist me she was very nice and agrees this was silly and indicated Dundas East should have taken the return. The customer service lady at Tucky at 330 Sunday Dec3 was the only one who showed an ounce of interest or compassion in my epic quest to return the lightbulb so to her I say sincerly thanks. Ok guys I have bought plenty over the years from Dundas st east store and have never had the misfortune of needing to return anything so if this is how you handle a 30 buck return on a repeat customer over the wrong lightbulb you win np you made me made and drove me all over town to jump thru your hoops. Overall, this is an okay hardware store, even though the selection is limited. Service is generally not helpful, but not a major flaw. However, today I had a 'never return experience' based on a refusal to return a deadbolt because the brass was marginally scuffed in taking it out of the package and repackaging it. I recently purchased a Schlage Deadbolt from the Home Hardware at 290 College Street. I removed it from the package and realized that it did not match the door handle colour (I had purchased Bronze and should have got Silver). When I returned to the store 1 week later, the owner told me that the back of the deadbolt was 'too scratched' to return. There were finger prints and very faint scuffing from removing the deadbolt from the package, but no pronounced scratches. In short, he would not honour the exchange, even when I offered to cover the costs of restocking from the manufacturer. I am not someone to return items very often or to complain, but I feel like I have been done a disservice, and at this point, would not return to this store. If you're grabbing something you wouldn't possibly return, then this store should be fine, but if you are looking for customer service, or even the basic honouring of an attempted exchange, please look elsewhere. read more

Had the worst service experience today at the paint department at HH in Stratford. An attitude of indifference was very evident. I left the store and went to Sherwin Williams and had my issue dealt with promptly and professionally. Sales clerks need to understand that it is the customer who pays their salary. It's ok store. Staff is helpful everytime I was there, unlike the HH at Bayview rude and abrupt with a only serve "white" attitude. REALLY, canadians need to just come out and say they don't want non-whites in their store. Use a sign, you know which one I mean. You did it before. The best thing about the College store is that they bought out Supremetronics that used to be on Queen. Now even Active Surplus is gone this is like the only place to get PTH parts of specific values. Even The Source has stopped selling electronic components. There is one or two stores but their selection pales in comparison. My only beef is that I bought a Li-ion 18650 cell, it didn't last long and died. This one's a tricky place to review... As a hardware store, it's one of the more modest Home Hardware shops in the city. They have a basic selection of tools, paint supplies, household needs, etc. What sets this hardware store apart is that it also has what looks like the electronics section of Active Surplus taking up half the shop. This detracts from the hardware side as half the size of a normal neighbourhood hardware store is taken up by electronic component parts. Awful, awfulllllllll customer service/online ordering. I ordered a gate for my grandfather (who has dimenatia and was sneaking out at night) through their online website. July 17th, 2021. Order is placed. It says 2-10 business days. But with covid maybe a bit longer, well a month goes by, no one calls or emails. So I call the windsor store, and a rude lady picks up the phone, doesnt ask me for my order number or anytbing, says "you'll get an email when your order is in" hangs up. Fast forward 3 more weeks, I call again, this time a rude lady again, but she transfers me to a man who is a little more helpful. He tells me, they use a "3rd party" for their online ordering and someone has "cancelled" my order. So he goes and "reorders" this gate for me, and says It should be in no later then Sept 7th. Well, look here, its Sept 22nd, and NO ONE has called, emailed, or informed me about anything. So my order from July 17th, is still not in my possession on Sept 22nd. We purchased 60" bypass doors from our Sherwood Park HH. These were a September 2020 item that had to be ordered in and I spoke to Aretha and we laughed about measuring twice and cut once; we ordered 60" and received 72', charged the $199.00 price not the $169.00 and received the wrong size, duly screwed. I run and own a multi million $ business where I deal with the worlds largest General Contractors (PCL Ellis Don, Clarke to name a few) Our motto is please hire us for "when the fine details matter" I understand what measuring is and ultimately what accountability is as that is the one word I earned my fortune by. Apparently that is not a word understood by the GM of this HH and or the owner. I ran into lots of problems priming and painting metal exterior doors. I tried the top rated primers (2 different ones) and painted with the recommended paint but each time the result was mottled and looked awful. I took my problem to Kristian at Home Hardware in Castlegar and he kindly supplied a new primer Block It which I used then painted the doors again with excellent results. This is the best primer I have ever used. How nice to know there is an expert available in our area to help with painting problems. read more

They are numerous stores combined into one!!!. One they are a fully functioning hardware store like any Home Hardware, but they include electronic components as well. Speaking to one of the employees their, the owner owns both Supremetronics and the Hardware Store. He has just placed the two inventories under one roof. Since my recent visit to the store I see that they carry numerous Arduino products now. After a discussion with the owner, he has told me he will be stocking numerous new sensors for Arduino's. This place also carries THOUSANDS of transistors, IC's, and other hard to find parts; not to mention the other millions of little parts in store. Buying the product was relatively easy and the floor staff was quite helpful. It was a small bottle of touch up paint, so I made sure that I could return it if the colour didn't match. I was assured that I could, providing the product was sealed and in the original packaging. A week later, I was back in the neighbourhood and returned the paint. The cashier was quite surly and grudgingly returned my money after minutely inspecting the product. I was then told, quite brusquely, that they don't usually accept returns, but just this once... I pointed out that their return policy states 14 days, and that I specifically asked about returning the little bottle of paint as they don't accept returns of paint in general. I was then told, "it has to be the same day". Nonsense...that condition was never mentioned and if that was the case, it should have written on the bill. They say ultimately you get the business you deserve, and for this exhibition of petty rudeness, they have lost my business forever. I will never shop at Home Hardware again and I'm going to encourage my friends and family to shop elsewhere as well. I received a Christmas gift from my parents in a different provinces and the gift had a gift receipt. I tried to return it for either store credit or a refund and was told I had to return it to the original store because the product was discontinue. The product showed up on their computers and it was $85. Now I have to spend $20 to ship it back to my parents and hope they can return it. Home Hardware stores also feature giftware and seasonal items.They are continuously replenishing their stock, so no empty shelves here. This is your one stop place so no need for a dozen trips. They will look it up their inventory on the computer and make an order on the spot. I like the fact that it is Canadian owned and have 100,000 different products. They promptly call you when your item is in. The real reason to go is the staff. These guys know their stuff with years of experience. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and professional.They did an awesome job during Covid--19 , pleasantly greeting and serving, though it was stressful. I gave Madelene a particularly challenging job to cut an irregular piece of glass for a shadow box that broke in storage. She measured it like an engineer. While I could come back, she was on a mission to cut it exactly to my requirements and wrapped it up so I could take it home, then and there. There is always attention to detail and commitment.They work as a team, which is re-feshing to see. That is why I keep going back. Beware buying anything from Home Hardware stores!!!! Bought a Marks choice Sprayer that connects to the hose and was told the warranty for the product is 14 days without the package opened. After a few weeks the sprayer got stuck and the handle does not work to press it in which holds the selected spray pattern... Got out there and the 2 "customer service reps" were on their internal comms talking about the f@#$&ing customer asking about f@#$&ing lattice. Most of the employees are not very knowledgeable about their products and the return policy is atrocious. Contrary to some of the older reviews on Yelp, I've had fantastic service here. They're super helpful with locating items, checking stock and also recommending things for different project and in my experience, will always try to find you the right product that fits/works. There are 2 floors in the store and an entire wall of resistors/transistors/small electronic components in basement which is very well stocked generally. On the other hand though, while they do have almost an entire wall of screws/nuts/bolts, that wall tends to be less well stocked, often with only 1-2 packages, if any of each on the shelf. Do note that there's some wood at the back of the store on both the first floor and basement, so check both places if you're looking for that. Prices are on the competitive end, and they generally have better deals than Home Depot and Creatron. They also do stock some random things such as umbrellas and pool noodles in the basement. read more

This place is hopeless. Every time I go in and ask where something is, the staff, who seem to speak very little English, look at me kind of helplessly. Without fail I have to say it three or four times, then explain in detail what the thing is that I am looking for, and then they say "Oh we don't have it." Then I go look for it myself and eventually (usually) find it. Recently I went looking for the guy who does speak English, and when I said "Excuse me...", he barked "Wait"! More interested in throwing a ball to a 3-month-old bulldog puppy belonging to one of the clerks than helping a customer carrying a large box out of the store. Puppy got out and male employee shoved past me at the door to retrieve it. Liability issue here if I had stepped on the ball or dog. He could have held the door open for me to exit. First of all I am amazed by some of the 'haters' here (people don't speak English here, etc). I have shopped here several times and granted, this is not a big box store like you would find in the suburbs, but it does have a good cross section of almost any products you would need for you condo or rental apartment. I have always received good friendly service here, and I love the fact that you can look around without anyone bothering you. Prices seem fair on most items and this is a great place for people that love electronic gadgets (lower level is completely geared to electronic parts) If you can't find something at your local dollar store, there is a good chance you will find it here :) read more
