The first thing is to ask yourself why there are either five star or one star for this establishment. This is a tell-tell sign. They charge extra fees for services they don't even properly provide and will nickel-and-dime you. I went in for a contact lens exam and was charged a contact lens evaluation fee, which felt completely unjustified because Holt didn't actually evaluate anything. After paying the exam copay, evaluation fee, and refraction fee, I noticed the prescription they gave me was only changed by 0.5 from my previous prescription. What bothered me most was that Holt never mentioned the prescription change, never explained why it was changed, and never offered trial lenses or asked me to test the new power to see if it worked better. None of that happened. When I got home and noticed the change, I called the office. They told me that if Holt didn't discuss it during the appointment, I would need to schedule another appointment just to ask about it. That's completely unacceptable. We were charged extra for services they claimed to provide but clearly did not. I would not recommend going there. I told her the first time that I was fine using my current prescription, as it's still valid and my vision hasn't changed. Despite that, she returned again to ask about scheduling an exam, which made me feel uncomfortable and pressured. I had to find a new eye Dr. after my insurance changed this year and I could no longer see Dr. Rachael Smith at Target. She has been so great to me since moving here four years ago. I heard good things about Holt Eye Care from my neighborhood and the reviews were good, so I figured I'd give them a shot. Like others had mentioned, the office is very clean, organized and the frame selection is great. The front desk staff and everyone I've met with is very welcoming and helpful. I arrived early for my 4pm and Anastasia (very friendly and helpful) asked I fill out additional paperwork. I did this prior to my appointment through their online portal but there was an extra charge for contact fittings. Standard practice these days. When I "checked in" on Yelp, they offered a free Optomap eye exam (a $35 value) which was great! This is where the eye doctor evaluates the retinas and the light-sensitive tissue at the back of my eyes. They also check for glaucoma and other issues. Thankfully, my eyes are very healthy but at 44, I will likely be doing this each year. Within 10 minutes of my arrival, I was called back by Amy, their tech. She took great care doing my tests, took notes about my glasses and contacts etc. She was very soft spoken and professional. While I was busy with her, Dr. Bogart interrupted us by asking her a question and they went back and forth for a minute or two about the answer. I felt that was a bit unprofessional and could have waited. The testing and questions took 30 minutes (standard for a new patient) and then I met with Dr. Bogart. She is very kind and listened to my concerns and needs. They were clearly very busy because after she had me try the new contacts she recommended, she excused herself to "finish" up with a patient next door. I was left waiting for about 10 minutes but again, maybe this is normal. I am not used to a one-on-one experience at Target. It was confirmed I am still dealing with dry eye and Anastasia gave me additional drops to use at night as I was leaving. Nice of her to take the time to chat with me, otherwise I wouldn't have known this was an option since Dr. Bogard made no mention. I was also sent home with two different types of contacts to try for a few weeks before I chose what to order. After that was finished, I sat down with Robert to purchase new glasses. ***Two weeks later*** I met with Melissa to get my new glasses fitted and she was really great! Patient with my questions, wanted to ensure my glasses fit well and told me to call or text if there were ever any issues. While I was there, I mentioned the two-week trial contacts weren't working any better than the previous pair I had been wearing for years. The exam from start to finish was very informative, detailed & very thorough. I'm not an eye expert so the detailed explanation of the exam and the results were just so astonishing for me. Brutal experience at Holt Eye Care in Surprise, AZ. The customer service was really poor back where you pick up glasses. I was prescribed readers when it should have been computer distance. I asked for the correct prescription since they did not get it correct and they said they could change it but only for an added cost. Since I had already paid for the original prescription, I did not want to pay yet again. I asked if I could get a refund and just return my glasses as I cannot see out of these new glasses for what I need them for and the answer was No. Every time I asked for something, the answer was no or yes for an added cost. The way to communicate with Holt Eye Care is through text messaging which sounds nice, but when they don't respond to text left for several days or ever, it is not helpful. It is so frustrating that I paid for glasses that I cannot see out of and they do not seem to care at all. I really enjoy coming here. It is small and more personal. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The doctor is very knowledgable and friendly, he does not just shuffle you through the door like a number. There is a definite difference between her and a Walmart optician and lens crafters or the like. The selection here is not that huge, but the selection they do have are very broad and top of the line. I never have a hard time finding what I want. Like most people, I'm usually a bit nervous when checking out a new doctor or any medical provider. How will my insurance work here? Will I actually get in on time? Well, Holt Eye Care has managed to exceed my expectations. I made an appointment 2 days in advance (I had some time off work and could, for once, get to an eye appointment at 2 in the afternoon - note: other place in Surprise were telling me 2 - 3 weeks to get an appointment during the day [i.e. not the ever so popular 7 AM or 4:30 PM appointment]). I arrived early for my appointment and filled out all the paperwork. The front desk person (sorry ... I forgot your name), was very helpful and friendly. She did the "pre-testing" also before I saw the doctor. Great "chair-side" manner. I found out (and was rather relieved) that they don't do the "air puff into your eye" test, and for an extra $28 they do this nice "Optomap" image of your retina (no dilation). Dr. Holt, the eye doctor, has a great manner, very friendly, and explains everything to you in a way that is very easy to understand. The frame selection is not huge (it's not a mega-corporate super chain store folks, it's a LOCAL BUSINESS owned by real people), but pretty diverse. I found out from the optical manager that she hand picks what's in stock and she did have a good eye for frames. The optical manager was also very knowledgeable about my insurance plan and explained my plan to me and what it covered and didn't and what everything would cost. All in all a great experience. Let me start by saying that I have been to 3 eye doctors over the last 3 years, purchasing glasses at each for no small pennies, and no one could get my prescription correct. I had optic neuritis some years ago that damaged my vision in one eye which requires me to have prisms in my eyeglasses. On top of that, I need a stronger prism up close than I do for distance so bifocals (yes I'm at that age) couldn't ever work. The only solution I was ever given was to have 2 pairs of glasses that I would switch back and forth ( not practical for my line of work). I took a risk that a "mom and pop" shop might be able to help and I'm over the moon happy I did. The front staff is wonderful but Dr. Holt takes the cake! He went out of his way to research my unique condition (needs), called speciality labs and found out that they COULD make bifocals for what I needed. Not only could they do it but the front staff was able to get every penny of my insurance benefit to cover it. I walked away with 45.00 out of pocket instead of the 600.00 they thought it might be! I've had my new glasses for a month and I'm SO happy! If you are nervous to try a new place don't be... this IS the place to go. I would follow Dr. Holt to the ends of the earth because he actually CARES and goes the extra mile. The front staff is top notch and will work every angle for the insurance. My family has come here for years for our annual eye exams. They bill my insurance and we pay our $20 copay. Both my son and wife went last week for their exams and everything was great. When we went to order our glasses they left the box for PD empty. This is a needed number to word them. We called and asked for it and they said it would cost $25 each to get them measured. That is ridiculous. When you pay someone for an exam and get a prescription it should include all the information needed to get the prescription filled. By far the worse communication! I would have been a new patient, I have called multiple times to try and schedule an appt and the phone just rang and rang. I have reached out via their website sending a new patient inquiry 3 times and I haven't gotten a response. I finally made an appointment to get glasses after having cataract surgery. I have VSP vision insurance through USAA and fortunately HOLT Eye Care is very close to where I live. I was able to schedule an appt within a few days. I arrived a little early for the appt. The office was very tastefully decorated and very inviting. I was greeted by Laura and she assisted me with the paperwork and insurance matters. While waiting to be examined, I was able to observe Sandra, the Office Optical Manager helping a customer purchase eyewear. Wow, was she well versed in optical matters. At this point, I was feeling very good about having selected HOLT Eye Care for my eye glasses. Then Anastasia asked me to come back for my examination. She performed some procedures on me. I must tell you, Dr. Holt has what appeared to be the latest equipment which also reassured me that I made a great eye care selection. Dr. Holt then greeted me and shook my hand. He was very very pleasant and easy to talk with. Within minutes I felt like I had already been a patient of his for years. Go figure. I made a statement during the examination that alerted him to a possible medical issue with my retina. He carefully explained that I needed to see a doctor who specialized in retinal matters. He arranged an appointment with a doctor in Sun City West and I will be seeing this doctor within 3 days. How's that for service? Next I sat down with Sandra, the optical manager to select frames. I usually have my daughter help me make this decision but Sandra assured me that she could assist me. So upon reading reviews we were looking forward to coming to Holt. The first visit, we were told they don't have my contact brand and that it's discontinued. I went thru four months of contacts of the brand they suggested in a month. I went back to express my concerns and was informed that I was never told my contacts were discontinued but had to be ordered. When I questioned about them being discontinued I was told, "I never said that". Was given another set, highly uncomfortable and not my size. I even asked if I should give them my current prescription, they said they didn't need it. So with two visits, we are not satisfied with our experience. read more
