My all time favourite gelato shop for over a decade now. I frequent this shop as I use to come here when I was a lot younger with friends. Years later, I still find myself coming here when I'm in the area or craving some nostalgic gelato. It's definitely a neighbourhood favourite with locals in the area always just walking there for a sweet treat. My favourite flavours are always the rocky rocher and mango. Sounds weird to have these two flavours together but it somehow works and I always get these two combos since I was growing up. You can get your gelato in a cup or cone. They only take debit or cash. While my fam indulges I get the keto version which is not made there but is actually ok. Not going to give more stars because the place is small and always crowded, they don't take credit, and the staff turns up the music so loud that they can't hear your order and you can't hear their reply. That's just dumb, it's not a bar and there's only seating for about 10 people anyways so who's the music for? Besides traditional options like vanilla, chocolate and pistachio, you can get less common ones like pear and key lime, and even some based on candy bars, like Skor, Reese and Twixx. Had a "small" with pear & coconut cream pie. It was huge and you can mix 2 flavours (large gets you 3). Pear had a good pear flavour and was very smooth. Coconut cream pie was very coconuty, with shreds of the fruit, as well as some pie bits - they were big enough to be pieces of pie (rather than crumbs). Neither had any detectable ice crystals. A relatively small downside is the staff don't seem knowledgeable about their product. Neither of the servers were able to tell me what kind of pear was used in the pear sorbet. read more

I've been here a handful of times already. Great spot for a tasty cold treat! they always have tons of flavours and I think they rotate them every once in awhile so they change. However, I'm always a fan of their Sicilian pistachio. I know their ferror roche flavour is super popular. Today I wanted to try coconut but they only had a coconut cream pie and so I settled for cappuccino instead. The cappuccino flavour tasted like a tim horton's ice cap! Due to covid-19, we couldn't sample flavours before ordering. Considering it's $6+ for 2 scoops in a small cup (you can opt for cone for the same price), they really fill it up, so I was happy with the portion size. Definitely shareable with a date or a 2nd person. They also sell tubs of gelato as an option. And just a heads up, they ask you to pay first and then you go and pick your flavours and are handed the gelato. It's not preferential treatment of any kind. CASH OR DEBIT only as well. read more

I've been coming to Hollywood Gelato on and off for probably decades, so it's definitely weird that I haven't written a review until now. But we were in the area and the weather was nice, so we decided to pop in and grab a couple of scoops. We were in the mood for pistachio, but we couldn't decide between plain pistachio and Bronte Sicilian Pistachio, so we just figured we'd get both flavors. They're both phenomenal. The regular pistachio tastes pretty much how you'd expect (i.e. it's very traditional), but it's just so creamy and flavorful. The winner for me, though, was that Bronte Sicilian Pistachio, which is insanely rich and bursting with real pistachio flavor. Yes, the gelato was good. It is expensive however, so that's already knocking a star or two. I was fortunate to taste some of their fare, however, not in the quantity I desired. The staff brusquely asked me if I was okay paying with debit or cash. I assured them, yes, as I had my debit card on me, and I had noticed the sign on the door. However, apparently the owner is exceptionally cheap and only accepts Canadian debit cards. The staff said that Apple Pay worked, so I assumed Apple Cash, being a visa debit card would also work. So I wasted 25 minutes and roaming data trying to add money to my Apple Pay account from my bank account even though my email was listed as jmail instead of gmail. 5 Yelp stars? Yes. A Hollywood Star in front of the Mann Theater in Hollywood, CA? If only they would let me. Hollywood Gelato is tucked away north of Toronto's city center in Mid City but that gives you no excuse to not make the trip. I don't even think a Canadian blizzard would be a good excuse not to go. A polar bear in the city...sure. But only that. Here's what I look for when trying out a new gelateria: Gelato should be kept about 10 degrees warmer than ice cream so if you see the server needing to dip their scoop into warm water, walk away. Gelato should be kept at the perfect balance between soft and not yet melting. Also, if you see their basic gelatos topped with decorative fruit and such, walk away. Gelato should be able to stand up on it's own flavor without the need for makeup to hide the imperfections. Finally, the color. Bright florescent color means added food coloring. Lemon should be nearly white, not yellow. Again, there shouldn't be any need for makeup. That being said. Hollywood Gelato meets all of these and their gelato is some of the best I've had outside of Italy. read more

I picked a small and choose my two flavors Skor and Valhrona Chocolate. Both flavors were good, the mellow taste of the Skor gelato blended well with the rich, slighly heavier flavor of the Valhrona Chocolate. The gelato here is some of the best I've had. I'm absolutely in love with the key lime pie flavour, as it really does taste just like a key lime pie! The serving sizes are great - I really like that you can still choose 2 flavours, even if you want a small serving. Service is quite friendly and they let you sample a couple different flavours if you can't make up your mind. Gelato is good any time of year, but for some strange reason, I find that I crave it more in the winter months. Maybe be because I know it won't be melting and dripping down my hand as I eat it! I have the biggest sweet tooth and I think this was one time where I felt I could have done without ice cream at the end of my meal. Because it really was that ho-hum. By the way, the menu board list a small size as the smallest for approx $5~ (2 flavours 2 scoops). But they also have a smaller size available for one scoop ($3~), just ask for it. I ordered the pear gelato. Although the texture is gritty just like a pear and also taste just like a pear, it was just a little stale. Odd thing is it made me rather eat an actual pear than the gelato version. My friend ordered her usual pistachio and she was disappointed and noted that the pistachio flavour isn't that strong. The server also accidentally overcharged my friend for an additional scoop but my friend was able to get the money returned. It was okay but it wasn't great. Also the lineups were gone.. who is going to have frozen treats when it is under 10C at night... But we do!! For $4.50 we got a 3 flavours to share...(sharing ice cream can be a really tricky task... but I can't imagine myself having one for myself then go for our UYE at Mezzetta Cafe Restaurant. My pick was the Hazelnut while my lovely date picked Key Lime Pie and Mango. Of course I love my Hazelnut since I am fan of anything that is nutty!! The Mango is A-OK too... Key Lime is not my fave.. The Gelato and Sobert are all so creamy...and I have my doubts like other yelpers... The interior has this weird spotlight.. which is not easy on the eyes and not the best lighting for photos.. Also, this place doesn't seem to have as much varieties compared to the gelato that's just a few blocks over. I did try what everyone else talked about already, which is the Rocky Rocher. This is a late post. But I had to leave a review because I love places that make their customers feel welcome. And this is that place! I've always wanted to come here because there's always a lineup! I needed to know what the hype is all about...and I can tell you why. Their gelato is A-mazing! It's creamy and smooth, and so flavourful. For this visit I chose the Rocky Rocher and the Pistachio. My boyfriend went with Reese's Peanut Butter, Cookies and Cream, and Creme Caramel. They were ALL delicious. I'll speak about my choices though because I only had a taste of his. I'll admit that I wasn't sure about my choice of pistachio gelato, but wow did the flavour surprise me. It wasn't overpowering and the nutty flavour tasted real, not fake like some places and brands. As for the Rocky Rocher...OMG. It really did taste like a Ferraro Rocher. And they are my favourite chocolate. AND THERE WERE BITS OF THE CHOCOLATE IN IT!!! My bf was also impressed with his choices; his go to is Cookies and Cream so naturally he had to try the gelato and he said of the three choices he made that was his favourite. As I recall they were delicious too. If you've not been here you NEED to check this place out. The owner is a gem and with Covid restrictions he's outside guiding you into the store with a warm greeting (and a smile that I'm sure is hidden under his mask). As you leave he's very thankful that you've made a visit and wishes you good night (or day I assume!). And the staff are just as warm and welcoming. Nice spot for a cold treat any time of the year at the Bayview area south of Eglinton. They have a variety of flavours and the portions you get is quite substantial. At Hollywood Gelato, I have "been there done that" for their gelato many times for at least 7 years. During this time, I have also eaten the gelato at the nearby competition and other gelato shops in the GTA. I have learned how different gelato shops make their ice creams. To this day, I still find Hollywood Gelato the best gelato shop in its area. One of their nearby competitors, years ago, once said that they don't make real Italian gelato. I guess that meant I was eating Canadian Italian gelato. I am giving Hollywood Gelato a rating of 3.5 stars instead of 4 stars since they still don't offer a gelato stamp card while they have offered a coffee stamp card for years. Gelato customers spend just as much money as coffee customers! I have eaten most of the gelato and sorbet flavours offered at Hollywood Gelato. My favourite gelato flavours in no particular order are: cappuccino, coconut cream pie, hazelnut, key lime pie, Sicilian pistachio, pumpkin pie (available at Thanksgiving). I am lactose intolerant, but my stomach can handle the gelato. I didn't list any chocolate flavours even though I love chocolate as I satisfied with eating chocolate ice cream bought from supermarkets. I want gelato and sorbet experiences where the flavour cannot be bought from supermarket ice cream. My favourite sorbet flavours in no particular order are: lemon, wild forest berries, mango, and raspberry. The sorbets are lactose free. I decided to pig out today, February 19th, since my last visit was around last Thanksgiving Day. I ordered mango sorbet, strawberry sorbet, Skor gelato and Reese peanut butter gelato for $7.50 including tax. I loved the mango sorbet. You get the real taste of mangoes and it is not too sweet. I made a mistake ordering strawberry sorbet. I meant to order raspberry gelato, but the server already scooped the strawberry gelato. The strawberry gelato lacked a strong taste. Is it because they used U.S. strawberries instead of better tasting, sweet Ontario strawberries when they are in season. Order the raspberry sorbet instead of the strawberry sorbet. The Skor gelato and Reese peanut butter gelato were OK. I usually don't order chocolate flavoured gelatos for the reason given above. Not feeling totally satisfied with my gelato experience today, I ordered 2 more scoops. I got key lime pie gelato and Sicilian pistachio gelato in a cup for $5.50 including tax. There was a definite bite of real lime juice in the key lime pie. Also, I could tell there was pie crust in the key lime pie as I chewed. The Sicilian pistachio had a rich flavour, which I liked. These are 2 of my favourite flavours at Hollywood Gelato. I like Hollywood Gelato so much that I bought gift certificates for myself as a Christmas present in previous years lol. It was a good deal. I read the Yelp good and bad reviews for Hollywood Gelato. Other customers may have experienced rude customer service, but in the 7 plus years of being a Hollywood Gelato customer I have never had an issue with their customer service. I have been there when it's very busy and when it's empty and there were no problems. Yelp is a popular social media app to make compliants about customer service, but what about making compliants about customers. During my latest visit, I observed a rude customer yell, "There's no one to take my money!". Instead, she could have said, "Hello" or "Excuse me". Was it really that necessary to be so nasty? Otherwise, I left Hollywood Gelato :-), but a bit full. read more
