3.5 stars. Really liked their gelato - got dark chocolate and strawberry. While the texture was a bit icey (expected since it was vegan), the flavours were really strong. Bonus points for having vegan/regular and gelato/icecream options to choose from. This hit the spot on a hot summer day. That said, also got their chocolates which were pretty but disappointingly average. You'd think it was artisanal chocolate based on how it looked, but ended up tasting fairly generic. Not bad, but not good and memorable either. While I think Avoca is 3 stars, I'm tagging it at 3 here on Yelp given the price - both the gelato and chocolates were expensive for the amount you got. It's a cute little shop on the Danforth and I hope people support small businesses. That said, I can't lie that Avoca isn't a must-visit for me. read more

Tryin to beat the heat, hubby took me to Avoca. The sign says "Chocolatier" but they also serve ice cream, gelato and hot chocolate. All are hand made without preservatives and additives, with gluten free and vegan options. RATING FOR FROZEN DESSERTS ONLY: Nice, helpful staff let us sample a number of items. Hubby wanted to be creative and make strawberry lemonade with a scoop of lemon and a scoop of strawberry gelato. The lemon was nice and tart but the strawberry was on the bland side, as if the strawberries weren't quite ripe yet. I got a scoop of coffee toffee ice cream and a scoop of vegan piña colada gelato. The coffee toffee had chunks of toffee in it YUM! TIPS - Sample before you buy! - Don't be afraid to mix and match flavors. I tried a spoonful of my sweet piña colada with hubby's tart lemon and it was a perfect pairing: sweet and sour. - Have a seat in their cute patio and relax to the sound of the bubbling water fountain. read more

This is such a hidden gem on the Danforth! Was expecting to just grab ice cream but half of the shop hold amazingly molded chocolates! Firstly, the ice cream was delicious and perfect for the hot summer days - the flavours were very true to their names. Sadly I didnt get a picture of the chocolates but trust me, theyre so beautiful you wont want to eat them (but you should because theyre delicious!) I bought one that was shaped as a skull!! 3.5 stars ... this is a really cute spot off of Danforth and after reading what this store did during the Danforth tragedy, I really feel compelled to come back and give them another try. Just down a little small street off of Danforth, you'd find the quaint and peaceful Avoca Choclatier. The lovely small patio with the water fountain gives a little hint of an oasis from the buzz of the Danforth. The store itself isn't very big and it's take out but they do have lots of chocolate options. I personally am all for their gelato as it was a SUPER hot day and anything cold was a necessity. The staff here was quite kind and generous in offering taste samples to make sure we chose the right gelato. I do appreciate how they also had vegan sorbets as an alternative. They were really patient as we decided what flavours we wanted. I did try a bit and found most flavours 'different' in texture... it wasn't creamy like ice cream or other gelatos. It had a bit of texture or grit in some. I did find these melt SUPER ridiculously fast. My picture is only after a few minutes of scooping it out of their freezer. Yes it was hot but the ice cream was nearly a puddle in less than 10 minutes. This usually means there are no artificial stabilizers or fillers which is a good thing. Maple Walnut - The large walnut pieces in this one was a pleasant bite to have and added a nuttiness to it. I know some people have a hate or love relationship with the nut but this one is for the lovers. The maple ice cream base didn't have a strong flavour unfortunately. 3.5/5 Toffee Coffee - This one was interesting. It tasted good on the sample spoon but in larger quantities, it didnt quite translate. There was a definite grittiness to the ice cream. Almost as if there was too much corn starch or some kind of powdery thing in it. Also, the coffee flavour was there but quite toned down. I did try to find the toffee flavour but it was just 'sweet' and not caramel or brown sugar like. 3/5 Iced Espresso - This was the bolder of the 2 for coffee flavours. Much stronger than the toffee coffee but it also had the similar texture to the Toffee Coffee. There is a noticeable grittiness to the ice cream. There's something in it that makes it grind on your teeth. 3/5 Strawberry - Ok, this was the winner. Best one by a lot. Though it melted SUPER fast, the flavour of this one is all berry. Juicy and sweet ... this one is a good one to get. I will admit it is a tad sugary but compared to the other ones, it's a winner. 4/5 Love the little cute atmosphere and the staff... they're gems for sure. As for the ice cream, I think there are some decent ones but perhaps I should retry again. It is worthwhile to try if you're in the area. read more

Nestled on the side street, hidden in Hampton Avenue this chocolaterie place certainly adds to the vibrant restaurant and cafes scene along Danforth. They open till 10pm in the summer. All hand made chocolates. They even have gelato & ice cream. Choices, choices... Being a coffee lover, I went for the waffle cone coffee toffee ice cream. Their "Wild Berry" non-dairy ice cream/gelato is one of the better "berry" gelatos available in Toronto: its a dark purple colour and has pieces of real berries in it. Their other non-dairy ice cream/gelatos are fantastic too (vegan chocolate is deeply chocolatey). Hot chocolate drink also very good. read more

Avoca Choclatier is a hidden neighborhood gem, off a side street near Danforth. I stumped by Avoca Choclatier out of sheer curiosity. It did not disappoint. Luscious chocolate diary free gelato reminded me of a 100% chocolate gelato I had in Milan. I opted for a small gelato ($4.75) with mixed berries and dark chocolate. This is a little gem of a spot that my friend and I accidently discovered walking around after a late lunch one day on the Danforth. It's located off a small side street so it isn't particularly noticeable - we just happened to see a sign someone had put on the sidewalk pointing to the store. It is a cute little dessert/chocolate shop that has some really delicious gelato. They make unique little chocolates, truffles, hot chocolates. All ingredients are of the highest quality and I believe they are locally sourced. The staff are super friendly and will let you sample the gelato. It's not the cheapest gelato but man it was gooooooooood. We orderd a half and half - the dark chocolate and a mango. Oh man the mango tasted exactly what a lush, ripe mango in the Caribbean would taste like. They must change up their ice cream/gelato menu for seasonal items b/c i took a very quick peek and I don't see it listed on their website now. (We went early fall). Right off the bat, this place sounds great. Hand made chocolate? Nutella gelato? Key lime truffles? You have my attention. The shop itself is adorable. It's bright, fun, and it has these cute little tables out front that are the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by. While we were there I was able to get a taste of a few things - some truffles, some chocolate, some gelato, and some ice cream. So, let's go from the start, shall we? I tried the key lime, monte casino and salted caramel truffles, and they were all quite good. Rich, flavourful, a good balance of shell and filling. The salted caramel was a clear winner for me, though, being smooth, decadent, and not too sweet. If you're only going to splurge for one of the bunch, that would be the one I'd go for. Because, though they were both very tasty, I do have to slightly critique the monte casino and key lime for being rather hard on the inside. Not because they were stale (everything was incredibly fresh), but simply because they were made that way. I expected the filling to be smooth, but when I bit in the shell spilt apart from the contents in two hard pieces. I'm not saying that the filling need be entirely liquid, but making it a bit softer would make the two truffles absolutely perfect. Usually this would not be a significant critique, though considering the high price point ($2.50 each!) I'm going to be picky. Anyways, moving on to the chocolate. I was only able to try a bit of the plain dark chocolate, but oh my was it good. A bit on the sweeter end of the dark chocolate scale, but it worked. The sheets are rather thin, though, so if you're not careful you'll be done in a heartbeat. And then there was the gelato. Oh my. This was, easily, the best Torontonian gelato I've had in a long time. Rich. Creamy. Delicious. The vegan dark chocolate and Bailey's were both exceptional if you're looking for a treat, and the lemon and mango are both great choices if you want something light and refreshing. Although my absolute, undeniable favourite was the nutella. It. Was. Amazing. Not overwhelmingly strong or excessively decadent, but still bold and delicious. Just trust me and get yourself a scoop. Or five. Finally, ice cream. I only tasted the mint chip and pralines and cream, so I can only speak to those, but I was a touch underwhelmed on that front. They were good, sure, but neither held a flame to the gelato. The texture wasn't as creamy as I would have liked, and the flavours didn't taste as natural as they did in the gelato. It was still tasty, but I would sooner go for I pint of Häagen-Dazs than one of the two, if I'm being honest. Especially for the price. In the end, despite my critiques, Avoca is an incredibly strong little shop that is certainly worth the detour. Though I would skip the ice cream, be sure to grab a big bowl of nutella gelato - and stuff your pockets with chocolates before you go on your way. read more

What a sweet little place. I'm not a big fan of chocolates which is what they specialize in - but their vegan gelatos are perfect for summer and nice for those of us who want to go dairy free. It still retains this creaminess and yet refreshing at the same time. The shop itself is small but perfectly cute - and they have a lovely seating area outside to enjoy the gelato. Unfortunately they don't do coffees as the patio would be perfect to sip some espresso. They talked about I think close to everything in the shop being made in-house. The quality of everything they have is just exquisite. They're open longer hours than expected - until 10pm every evening. read more

This place is so good. Just around the corner off the busier danforth strip. This is my go to spot for ice cream and gelato. They are so nice and are totally ok with letting you sample multiple flavours before deciding. They also have a small charming patio with a fountain and a few chairs and tables. I'm pretty sure everything is made in house. My favourite flavours are the toasted marshmallow ice cream and piña colada gelato. I'm surprised this place isn't busier as it's so tasty and much better than neighbouring Le Dipperie and Dolce Gelato. read more

Hot chocolate was very bland with some light creamy hint of flavour. Chocolates were disappointing... the chocolate was reminiscent of Lindt from a drug store and the flavours were quite bland. I could not tell the difference between ginger and cherry which is crazy. I had no idea what I was eating. As a point of reference, I found the 3.25% milk fat carton of chocolate milk at the Orange Carrot across the road immensely satisfying on the same afternoon. I've been here a few times and this is my only bad experience. Loved the atmosphere in this place and great customer service, but damn when I ordered a medium cup of ice cream he put 95% melting dark chocolate and the rest the other flavour. It was all pouring out of the cup and melting everywhere and of course I didn't get a napkin? So I had no choice but to go home and put in the freezer. 15 minutes later and it's still a soup. I can't believe I paid 7 dollars for this, so disappointed. Please train your staff to do half and half properly please. The vegan dark chocolate is awful and has a really chalky taste. Amazing, authentic gelato! All of the flavours taste great. I recommend everything--especially banana/nutella, piña colada, roasted marshmallow and the vegan dark chocolate. Cute decor, located just off of the danforth next to the second cup. There's a gorgeous fountain in the summer and it's a tiny adorable shop. Tucked away so it's less noisy and a bit far from the hustle and bustle of the main drag.
