You walk in to a cocktail and bar area, with an incredible painted sign on the brick wall behind the bar, that is a total throwback. The bar is incredibly comfortable and open and warm feeling. There are hardwood tables and beautiful booths along with a private dining area in the back. Really couldn't ask for or want for a more comfortable environment. *Service: absolutely stellar, super friendly staff, our server could not have been nicer or more genuine, or had more of an "ownership attitude" as if the restaurant meant everything to her, and so did us being there. She knew everything on the menu, had great recommendations, and insured we were consistently taken care of. She truly missed nothing. Harper, the owner, came over to check on us and ensure we were enjoying ourselves. He couldn't have been nicer or kinder or more humble. Service was outstanding. *Food & Drinks: The food! The drinks! Oh man! I've been a "Yelp Elite Member" for almost 10 years and the food here at hT is near the top of all my reviews, hundreds of them. The highest quality ingredients, impeccably curated, ingeniously but simply paired, created with a true love for the art of cooking and the true joy of the consumer. This was obvious. We started with a Mainstream Manhattan and Old Fashioned from the bar. No ordinary bartender, she's a true mixologist/professional. Both drinks were excellent, no "simple syrup" used here, raw sugar cubes melted into the finest spirits, yummm! We order brussels sprouts from the appetizer menu everywhere we go and compare them. None have ever come close to our favorite, for a dozen years, until now. These were crispy on the outside, but juicy inside, flash fried to an al dente bite and finished (almost injected) with a cherry vinegar glaze that permeated every bite with sweet, tart perfection. We also started with the vibrant Camden County May Pea & Truffle Toast which was like a celebration of spring with a fresh, grilled baguette topped with fancy Italian truffle cheese (insane!), sweet tender may peas, and fresh pea shoots, all drizzled with olive oil for a fresh, earthy, and simple bite that captured the essence of this farm-to-table cuisine. For entrees we ordered the Ben Johnson's Soft Shell Crabs with remoulade and the Brown Sugar Brined Porkchop with pimp cheese, grits, and chard tomatoes with a side of hand cut fries with roast shallot mayo. Everything was stellar, no exceptions. I can honestly say this was **the best pork chop I've ever eaten, ever.** Tender, sweet, meaty and paired perfectly with the creamy cheese grits and the tang and smoke of the charred tomatoes. Ridiculously good! See my photos, too bad they don't come with "taste-o-vision", because, wow! The hand cut, skin on, double fried potatoes and roast shallot mayo were fantastic. As if that wasn't enough food, they also brought us stone ground cornbread, with a massive slab of rough salted butter, steamy, warm, soft, buttery perfection. We arrived about an hour before closing and were seated immediately in a booth. Our server, Tally, greeted us soon after and offered some waters and menu suggestions since it was our first visit there. She did a really thorough job of explaining the menu. We placed an order for fried oysters appetizer and needed a few more minutes to decide on our entrees. We discussed sharing a few since we really couldn't decide. After a short time we then ordered our entrees. I ordered the Prime Ribeye, served with the "original" potato gratin and red wine braised onions. Amazing flavor! Julie ordered the Smoke In Chimneys Trout served filet with skin over Carolina gold rice, pink eyed peas and hope for Suffolk garden okra. Sara ordered the applewood smoked baby back ribs and requested the potato gratin. Finally, Larry ordered the Last Soft Shelled Crabs. Also added a pink lady apple salad to share. More on the food later. This is where our evening took a bit of a downward turn. Tally brought some plates and a sauce for our fried oysters appetizer. We had waited almost 30 to 40 minutes since being seated and ordering the oysters. After a bit of a wait, we didn't see Tally again so we questioned the delay with a few other employees because the table behind us had been seated well after our initial order and then soon after received.... three orders of fried oysters! We were still waiting. Another server whom we inquired about the delay came back and said they were working on our order and a manager would stop by to discuss the situation. A few minutes later another person arrived and presented a serving of fried oysters. Julie asked if they were the manager to which she replied, "Yes". It didn't appear as if she was going to discuss anything with us until Julie inquired is she was the manager. We proceeded to explain our discontent with the situation. She replied that our order was just placed a few minutes ago. Why did our server bring plates so much earlier? Why did she wait to place the order of our appetizers until after our full entree order was received? It was explained by Jessie, the manager, that all orders are placed and "fired" or initiated with the kitchen, together and entrees would follow appetizers being served at an appropriate time. While Jessie did apologize, it sounded like she was making excuses for the delay rather than owning any actual existence of the long delay. That didn't really make much sense since we ordered our appetizers well before with the purpose of having them served sooner since we needed time to review the menu for our entrees. Anyway, from that point on, we rarely saw our server. Other employees did stop in periodically to see how our meal was progressing. The website had a message from the owner stating, " honest seasonal cooking and remarkable hospitality" and "a memorable hospitality experience". Sadly, our experience lacked just that from our server. She never mentioned a miscommunication or any lapse regarding the food ordering/ delivering process throughout the rest of our meal. Not once! Thats strange since a manager was involved. Our visit was only "memorable" due to a lack of true "hospitality". Anyway, other than the lack of personal service from our server after ordering, the food was overall good. My steak was a little more medium rather than medium rare. But still tender, juicy and flavorful. The rib meat was good and the soft shell crab was delicious as was the pink lady apple salad. The trout was mostly flavorless and needed something to bring out any memorable taste. I just wish the service throughout our meal matched the food quality. We saw other members of the team more than our server after speaking to the manager. Not sure if that was by design or just happened that way. Jessie did stop by after payment and present a small gift card as a nice gesture due to the situation. However, turning to Coopers turned out to be the best decision we could have made for a celebration of life repass. The staff accommodated our diverse group seamlessly. Cheri and the servers delivered next-level service, expertly managing a large crowd and handling every drink order with absolute grace. They seated family and friends up on a riser while thoughtfully arranging floor seating for our mature guests in their 80s using walkers and wheelchairs. While the venue's interior is basic, the food was the true highlight for everyone from ages 1 to 100. The Meats: The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection, and the baked chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender. The smothered pork chops with onions were so tender they could be cut with a fork, and the hot wings were a massive hit that disappeared quickly. The peel-and-eat shrimp was well-seasoned, and the shrimp fried rice--though a unique spin with plenty of shrimp and vegetables--was just average. So, the cooks cannot be creative with the seasons like other restaurants or your home. A must try is the Chicken (Fried and Baked), Smothered Pork Chops, Turkey Wings(Sunday), Cabbage and Yams. The waitresses are always super friendly and on point from the many times that we visited we seem to be regulars so they always greet us and sometimes they even know what we're wanting to either eat or drink. Always a great time here! On Friday's they do karaoke and feature live bands sometimes. We haven't really attended a night where it was super busy but I have driven by before where some nights have been busier than others during the week. They do offer specials on food as well as drinks so if you like a small bar with friendly service definitely check them out if you're in the area. Parking can be a little difficult but they make it work and if you want to visit you will make it make it work as well.
