Everything about this place is aesthetically pleasing. I live for the whole Mexican vibe because obviously, reminds me of Mexico and I love it. They have cactus, prickly pears, and peppers as decoration. My group ordered Cafe de la olla and an oj. The OJ was very, very fresh, it was delicious! The cafe de la olla was what I expected, coffee with cinnamon and the garnish of orange added a nice little citrus twist. I ordered a burrito, the grab and go with bacon. It was good but it wasn't anything special, personally I would rather get a burrito from Santiago's (since they have similar ingredients). I will definitely go back because the coffee and the vibe! I was looking for brunch near Wash Park and happily found that a beautiful new spot had joined the neighborhood. Hoja does a wonderful job filling the emptiness left in my heart by occupying the former space of AikoPops. I barely recognized the interior with the new minimalist white design. Just a single row of small tables sit along the right side and the kitchen/counter occupies the left. It looks like there is still a patio space in the back to be enjoyed once the snow clears out. Thankfully one of the few tables opened up right as we entered, so we ordered at the counter and quickly sat down by the front window, soaking in the morning sunshine with our baby boy. My husband and I were debating between the same two menu items, so naturally we shared. The Farmer's Burrito and Chilaquiles were brought to our table within minutes, along with a hot pot of Malabar tea and their specialty Mexican iced coffee. We also enjoyed the chilled cucumber water while we settled in. I started to dig into to Chilaquiles, breaking the poached egg and dipping the thick-cut tortilla chips in a mess of yolk and salsa verde. It was a small but powerful dish, clearing my sinuses and invigorating my senses. The burrito had a mix of Asian and Mexican elements, with cool fresh cabbage and large slices of cucumber contrasting the warm scrambled eggs and potato chunks. It was quickly devoured. My drink was a sweet and spicy concoction consisting of a Mexican-spiced cold brew concentrate, a heavy pour of almond milk and an orange round. Each sip was more flavorful than the last, as the orange released its juices and the spices settled toward the bottom. People are quickly discovering this quaint eatery and I imagine it will soon have a long line of followers filling the sidewalk on the weekends, waiting for their turn to taste what Hoja creates. read more

What I've tried and would recommend: - $5 grab and go burrito (with tofu and sans cheese if you're vegan) with some poblano hot sauce - $9 farmer's burrito (that's larger than my head) and filled with ALL the veggies! - Avocado tostada - good, BUT if you're not a big pickled veggie fan, skip the pickled stuff - $4.5 cafe de olla - Mexican almond milk latte. It's not too sweet, spice-y, and super tasty! - Cold brew. It's dang good. This place operates like Vert in that it's first-come first-served/seated, but the food comes out pretty quick and people don't linger too long. I was having a real matzo ball soup craving so we decided it was the perfect time to pop into Hoja! It's small but it's so bright and beautifully styled in there. My husband ordered the burrito and though he's usually more of a Santiago's breakfast burrito eater, he loved this version. I tasted it and thought the same. Lots of flavors and textures that all work really well together. My soup was good but it really needed a good pinch of salt. I think that alone could take it from good to great. I ordered food delivered from Hoja this week. I got several things, so I could have a good variety. First was a bowl of their famous matzo ball soup, mentioned in the Denver Post's "Soups, stews and more cold-weather takeout for when temps drop around Denver" article from last winter. I was looking forward to some rich miso chicken broth with a Mexican influence, and got none of that. The soup was blander than any matzo ball soup I've had. I also ordered a bowl of fresh sliced tropical fruit, with Tajín. I was hoping for something like Mexican fruit cocktail, but what I got was a few slices of underripe pineapple. No other fruit. More bland. Lastly, I ordered a half dozen frozen breakfast burritos with ham, to enjoy over the next week. After having two of them, I'm throwing the rest out. I have never had a breakfast burrito so bland except from Safeway's deli. They had no texture and no flavor. They badly need some decent green chile. Good Times even does it better. There's a theme here - all three dishes had very little flavor. I wonder if the cooks at Hoja lost their sense of taste due to COVID, or have been cooking for nursing home patients. Fresh tasty, lite Tex mex is how I'd described it. I got the Chilaquiles (13 dollars) and my boyfriend the farmer's burrito (11 dollars) in a bowl with tortillas on the side. We both ate our entire portion without feeling like we overate or the usual stuffed guilty feeling that accompanied eating a large Mexican breakfast dish. The ice cafe de Olla (Mexican iced cofee) which has some cinnamon and nutmeg spices we enjoyed because it gave us a break from our usual plain iced coffee that uses syrups for flavorings. The orange was quite interesting but nonetheless delightful to add to the spices in coffee. Not sure if you were suppose to add it in to the coffee but I did! We stopped here for brunch one Saturday morning and we're glad we did. The place is cramped, loud and busy, but the food is worth it all. I'm a big fan of apricots so we sampled the apricot and almond granola, which was delicious! We also tried the poached eggs and salsa macha, and the Enfrijoladas, which were both excellent. Honestly, I don't understand why this place has such good reviews. Originally, I tried to order the Farmer's Burrito. I asked for them to leave off the egg, but apparently they cannot do this because "everything is mixed together in advance". But I had the option of them using the tofu mix instead. I would have, but I am allergic to soy. So no Farmer's Burrito for me. Fine. Instead, I ordered the Vegan Veggie Taco, and my boyfriend ordered the Farmer's Burrito (with egg). In regards to the burrito, it looked amazing! The same cannot be said for the taco though. The real problem was taste. Both items were served cold. I kind of understand this with the taco, since it was mostly hummus. But to serve a burrito with cold eggs...that's not good. It kind of seemed like random things were thrown into each item, to try and create a "hip" taste. The taco was the most flavorless thing I've ever eaten. The roasted veggies were cold and floppy - like they'd been made hours before. It was wet, flavorless, and just didn't work. My boyfriend said that the burrito was random too. The filling was cold, including the eggs. Clearly, it was prepared earlier, as indicated by the fact that they wouldn't omit eggs or tofu. We ate as much as we could, but I had a hard time eating it. The cold brew was good, but the glass was mostly ice As for service, it was also weird. After ordering, we were given a little card to put on the table (totally standard for many restaurants). But it was annoying that every time food or drinks were ready, the staff would come look at our card to see if the food or drinks were ours. They kept doing this even after we had all of our food! They just seemed so confused and disorganized. Plus, there were no forks on our table. So I ate my taco with a spoon until the nice guy at the table next to us gave us one of their spare forks. This place has so much potential. It's cute, and the food could be really good if it were actually made to order, served warm, and had flavors that go together instead of just random things. And, if they really want to appeal to those of us with dietary restrictions (as they clearly want to, since they have vegan options), they should not mix everything together. This could also be solved by making things to order. Overall, I obviously won't return. This place is adorable and has so much potential, but from the food, to the staff, to the lack of modifications, it's just not good. But hey, it sure is photogenic and hip. The farmer's burrito is a must-try for people who find themselves wishing other restaurants would stop using potatoes as a crutch and fill burritos with some real flavor, creativity, and delicious veggies! The focus in this burrito is on the slaw and the red sauce. Perfectly sweet, tangy, just a little spicy. I have NEVER eaten at a restaurant that sliced their vegetables so thin and consistently. The eggs and the potatoes were a compliment to the vegetable feast, not noticeable on their own, and I did not find myself missing them at all! They were there and perfectly balanced. The man working at the register (around noon on 4/14 if any management is reading this...unless he is one...) was incredibly knowledgeable and put up with my plethora of questions. Clearly I had not looked at the menu before coming here but he said pretty much everything they have can be made vegan and/or GF but most of their menu is already that way. They also have vegan and gluten free bakery items. I was too full to try them but I definitely want to in the future. The aesthetics are to die for and gave me major NYC vibes. I love how small and intimate it is. The design is well done and the decor is minimalistic. Every staff member I saw interacting with guests are nice and personable and genuinely seemed thankful for their business. I got their 'nachos' with jackfruit chorizo and it was very good! Only thing that would have made it better was hot sauce - not sure if they don't have any or if I just forgot to ask for some. Also got the hibiscus tea which was good. Hoja's environment is unique, warm, lively, and fun, and the food and drinks are absolutely DELECTABLE. my favorites are the grab and go burrito, the chilaquiles, and the Mexican Iced Almond Milk Latte. the space is snug and cozy, which i particularly enjoy - however, it can be a problem if the restaurant is packed, of course. the small space enables you to interact with the employees and watch them cook, which is quite enjoyable. i can't wait to see what they do with the patio space when it gets warmer out! read more

We saw the good Yelp reviews and tried Hoja for lunch. My wife had the avocado tostada dish and we both declared it very fine after I sneaked some bites of hers. There was a mystery ingredient in the tostadas, namely pickled broccoli stems that were fine sliced. Very interesting! I did not fare quite as well with the chilaquiles. While the ingredients were all fresh, including the tortilla chips, I felt the tomatillo sauce was overwhelming and the poached egg a bit underdone. We each had a drink: one hibiscus tea, one Yerba mate iced--both of them very good. The service was prompt and friendly. I did not see any meat items on the menu and it seems this place is vegetarian friendly. We have been to this location before when it was a charcuterie and then AikoPops. I've never written a yelp review but I felt this place deserved one. Everything about this place is awesome, from the food, to the atmosphere and service. Hoja means "leaf" in Spanish and you can see why they decided to named this beautiful place. They take simple ingredients and make them into something not only delicious but healthy.
