We love to seek the best dim sum places in different cities. We ventured into Hoi Tin today during our journey to Amsterdam. Hoi Tin is known for their baked items and D34. Pastry with BBQ Pork was one of the highlights today. The pastry was flaky and the BBQ Pork was seasoned well. The Pan Fried Pork and Chive Dumpling (D20) was the other item worth a positive mention. The glutinous, or sticky rice, was okay. A bit too salty for me and had a charred in the wok flavor which was heavy. The dough of the rice rolls was evenly thick throughout the dish, but not light. To me, it seemed like the rice roll was made in advance as it had a very chewy texture. They look nice and uniform, but I'd rather have something that tastes good. The biggest disappointment is a dim sum staple, Shui Mai (D02). They were luke warm temperature-wise. And the filling lacked flavor. The balance between the shrimp and pork leaned heavily on the pork, which was a bit gristly. The service is standard for a traditional Chinese restaurant. The staff speak English, Dutch, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Very impressive! They are also well staffed for a Chinese restaurant. The ambiance is the standard fare for a Chinese restaurant too. Focus is on seating, not on decor. There are several dining rooms and there is a case of baked goods at the entrance. Overall, they had some good and not so good items. Pick and choose wisely! read more

This place is great for dim sum and Hong Kong style dishes by Dutch standards. As someone who had lived in places with internationally renowned Chinatowns, Hoi Tin is decent but nothing super spectacular. The restaurant was pretty busy and laid out in a weird place with the toilet up some stairs (not the most accessible). We came for dinner and sadly their bakery was closed and they were out of egg tarts. The beef fried noodles were my favorite, the wonton noodles were good, but the broth could have had more flavor. Nothing wrong with it, just maybe I expected more. Overall I'd give this place 3.5 stars because it was just fine, but since I can't do half stars I'll round it up to 4. Despite the score I gave it I'd probably still come back to try their bakery. read more

Ok so for framing, I'm coming from San Francisco and my local friends wanted to hit up this Chinese spot. No problem I'm happy to check it out. On a plus note (and yes this is a plus note) it's a nice place and kinda indistinguishable from any restaurant I'd find in Chinatown San Francisco. That's high praise. There's a line (I think we had a reservation) and you'll wait either way but again that's par for course. There's some dim sum and some other main entrees and it was all solid. Probably one of the better spots in the city actually...so don't miss it if some solid Chinese food is what you're after. read more

I had no idea Amsterdam had a Chinatown and found Hoi Tin to be open for dinner. We ordered a few dim sum items, and though decent considering you're in Europe, it wasn't memorable. I love Noodle Rolls and was ecstatic to see it on the menu, however, much like the other items, it lacked seasoning and depth. If you're in Europe, it's an acceptable option for dim sum, but for someone who's Chinese [American], you might leave disappointed. read more

The Chinatown in the Amsterdam is essentially a one block street. Given the lack of competition in the area, the quality of this place is surprisingly not bad. They have all the standard dim sum items that you would normally find. I didn't expect much, but left fairly satisfied. Probably the most disappointing item was a sizzling beef, which tasted a bit too sweet. The seating area surprisingly large pink and can accomodate children. read more

The Amsterdam Chinatown may be small, but tucked away in its short lane are some semblance of a seemingly authentic Chinese dim sum restaurant. Foreigner you may be and if you don't speak the languages, you'll be okay especially with a menu containing bright, vivid photos and the full English descriptions. Tea came quickly and service was friendly and quick. They have a pretty extensive selection for dim sum. Pricing was fair too considering how plump all items ended up being. Flavor may have been lacking in some items (e.g. Wonton noodz) and the shrimp dumpling was slightly undercooked, but most items were overall tasty and satisfying. Sat down Sunday at 7:00. Tea came quickly server came over and explained that we needed to write down the food item on notepad on table. We ordered pork and shrimp dim sum. We also ordered noodle soup with wonton and duck. The dim sum was tasty and full of shrimp. The soup was a bit boring. We asked for some soy sauce. 1 bowl was 14.50 plus extra 4 for additional toppings. Wontons good and duck meaty and tasty. We were still hungry so we ordered a sizzling dish. We stumbled on this gem on our way to our dinner cruise on the canal. We stopped in to grab what morsels we could from the display case. The little shop was extremely busy but the establishment had friendly folks that could understand English. Our teens loved the moon cakes. The winning flavor was pineapple. We couldn't get enough of the sweet buns and custard tarts. Coming from Hawaii - the pork manapua / pork buns did not disappoint! There is a lot of foot traffic so be patient. The line goes fast. We plan to return to try a sit down meal. While in the red light district, this particular street Hoi Tin was on was pretty family friendly. We didn't see anything alarming. We were really craving Asian food after a long time in Europe and stumbled upon this gem! The waiters are very nice and recommend AMAZING dishes to you. Even though they were sold out of all rice noodles dim sum(it was 10pm), we got another delicious rice cakes dish that was a tad spicy. The Peking duck(half portion) was huge and came with some cabbage as well. Shu Mai were cooked well too. We came here for dinner around 6pm and we were able to get seated right away. We got the chicken and corn soup, the noodles with fried dough in it, vegetables, and chicken. I was really glad they served dim sum all day because not too many places do that. I really liked my noodles and soup. It's what I'd expect from a decent Chinese restaurant. The vegetable and chicken had good flavor without it being too overwhelming. The portions were also well sized and had us really stuffed at the end of our meal. The flavor was on point and felt like authentic Chinese food. The prices are normal for an average Chinese restaurant and if you're not looking to splurge, this would be a good place to come for dinner. read more

So we got: 1. Xiaolong bao 2. Jaozi 3. Loubou gao (white carrot cake) 4. Spicy chicken with vegetables 5. Shuimai Food: it was Ok. Some of the dishes were just big and had no real taste. Maybe they just are used to feeding hungry tourists. Nothing really stood out. The xiaolong baos were the best dish but not close to the best I've had. They also didn't have any broth in them The waiter also misread my handwriting (they ask you to write down the dishes that you want) and he mistook my "6" for a "4" on two dishes. One dish he brought out that we didn't order was a chicken dish that had the garlic sauce they use to season duck. This was delicious. I would have ordered this had I known. Bottom line: if you're hungry and want a lot of food, this place is good. If you want good Chinese food, keep walking. read more

The food here is pretty good, and the prices aren't terrible. A pot of tea here is a joy. Sadly I am tanking them by a star for turning away my service dog. I'd say I've been there 20-25x, perhaps 12 with my small and well behaved dog in tow. The last time (in all senses of the word) we visited, we were kicked back out into the rain because they changed their pet policy. read more

Mondaynight after the gym; time for Chinese! We were planning on New King but unfortunately there was a 30 minute waiting line. So we decided to go to Hoi Tin! I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, hellz yeah! That's how I like my chicken!! My hubby had sliced chicken with Rice noodles; add a lotta ketjap and soy sauce, just to make the dish a little more tasty. (Opinion) Our mate ordered the beef with 4 season vegetables. The beef was yummy, the veggies not "ma thang". I'm very satisfied! (and my tummy even more!!) There's no pin or creditcard which I find to be a little odd. Pleasantly surprised to find a authentic Chinese restaurant in foreign land! Good range of dim sum, and their carrot cake or rather radish cake will even put many Chinese restaurants in Asia to shame, so don't miss this dish while you are here. When I'm in A'dam this is one of the two Chinese joints I hit. The clue is to eat where the Chinese eat. This is such a place. Service is well...Chinese. Quick, to-the-point and no frills. That's fine with me because I'm here to eat and eat well. It's a small place just behind "de Wallen" aka The Red Light District. The dim sum is good and rather cheap..by Dutch standards. I went to Hoi Tin for some dim sum with my Japanese friend. I've been in here for the Chinese bakery which is part of the establishment, but never a full lunch or dinner. I'm Chinese myself and loved Dim Sum on Sundays with my parents since I was a toddler. In a nutshell the experience was below average. Normally I forgive Dim Sum restaurants for their decor if the food is awesome, but unfortunately this had no saving grace. The place was very much like the waiter there - tired, old and waiting for retirement. We had a selection of prawn dumplings, shanghai dumplings, Cheung fun (prawn and char siu), fried turnip cake, and other stuff most westerners would not eat (Stewed chicken feet in chillies & black bean sauce). The Cheung fun was in the wrong kind of soya sauce, and everything else was just off the mark in terms of look and taste. It was a kind of imitation of Dim Sum - like a trainee chef had learnt the dishes and not finished the training. Dim Sum should be fresh and uplifting, but this was everything but that. Unfortunately I'll be going to other Dim Sum restaurants in the future, and hope that they can survive on the passing tourist trade for evening meals! The dim sum at Hoi Tin are quite good by continental standard. The dishes also seemed to have been super-sized. I ended up with far more food than expected. Four dim sum items plus one stir-fried noodle are more than enough for two. Everything for less than 30€ (including tips). read more

This place came recommended from a friend, and though I trust her judgment, this place was a dud. From charging .80 for tap water to tiny shrimps in the shrimp fried rice or the over breaded and over cooked sweet and sour chicken, I'm feeling a huge let down. My recommendation is to skip this place and go down the street to Chao Phraya, the Thai place. We also ate at another Chinese restaurant on our first night here and that place was head and shoulders above this place. read more

We actually went here on the strength of reviews on Yelp. I'm not sure if it was an off night or what but I have to say it was easily the worst Chinese meal I've had in a restaurant in my life. The menu looked good enough and we started with some steamed pork dumplings - always one of my favourite things. What came were really horrible clusters of fatty meat and gristle with gloopy stuff holding them together. I ate half of one - they were really unpleasant. Next came a platter of deep fried cuttlefish. These actually looked very tasty and smelled great but when I tried to cut one in half to eat it my knife hit something solid that was like hard foam rubber. I genuinely couldn't cut it and the waitress noticed I was struggling and asked if I was OK. I said 'I can't eat this' and she asked what was wrong so I suggested she try to cut the cuttlefish herself which of course she couldn't. She took it away and suggested I have one of the 'sizzling' beef dishes that arrived on an insanely hot griddle sizzling loudly. It was more expensive but sounded good and I was hungry by this point so I said OK. A few minutes later the waitress returned with a platter of beef that was resolutely silent and not sizzling in any way. It wasn't even that hot, not good and I didn't eat that much of it. The bill arrived - no charge for the cuttlefish but full price for the beef. I mentioned that our meal had been poor but the bill remained the same price and we left without tipping as a result. Hoi Tin has long been one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Perfectly situated at the end of the seawall, nearly at the Nieuwmarkt. Very nice coming in also via the Baker area with delicious Chinese buns. Last Friday once again eaten here with old friends. No fuss, but always stoneware prepared dishes. A personal favorite remains for me the Kai Lan (Chinese broccoli). Delicious al dente stir fried with lots of garlic! The Chinese ladies in Ministry know a nice balance between joking on his smooth, efficient operation and Amsterdam. And, last but not least, the price should not be an obstacle! read more

I'm really not picky, neither is my husband, but this is the worst Chinese we have ever eaten at. We ordered four types of Wan Tan, a plate of vegetables, mineral water and a beer. First we were astonished that the water I ordered came in a small glass (max 125 ml) - just a glass... No bottle, no nothing... Whatever they may have served me... But anyway! We were awaiting the food. After the first serving of Wan Tan we had to wait quite a while for the next Wan Tans to come. When they finally came, two where a big deception! A lot of dough, almost no stuffing, no taste... One was really good, the first one was ok. But nothing was even half as exciting as written in various apps. Supposedly they are famous for their Wan Tans... But well, we were still like putting all our hope in the plate of vegetables, but... What to expect? It had no taste at all and cost € 13 and something! Just some boiled vegetables, yes! Finally we asked for the bill and there you go! € 35! For the glass of water the took € 2,25! Any more questions? we were very disappointed. this chinese restaurant claims for himself to be obe where chinese people go to. maybe it is like that. and cettainly there have been a chinese couple there. but the quality of the food was not very high (and know a bit about chinese cuisine). the choi sum was served only medium hot. the rice was not very hot or fresh as well. prices are way too high (ok, tourist area) for that low quality level. service is quick und the meals were served quite fast though. very small dining room with only around 20 seats (wonder where the other 140 seats are? maybe on the other side of the street where there seems to be another facility belobgung to this place??) anyhow, we should have gone to nam kee a few meters further where the people were actually quewing up just to get a seat. we asked a couple just coming out and they said that the food was very good. gee we will check that out today. but hoi tin is not recommendable. read more
