The HogsHead Cafe was easy to find in a strip mall area. Plenty of parking, well lit parking lot. The interior was a little dark, but maybe they were going for the 'smoky' look? :) Our group ordered two Big Boners, the nachos, and a kids cheeseburger. The Big Boners were a HIT! 1/2 pound bacon-wrapped beef hot dog, deep-fried, topped with hand-pulled pork, Hog Sauce, coleslaw & baby back ribs for $15.99 . It was so good, another one was ordered to go! The kids cheeseburger was ordered with added lettuce and tomato and our little one said it was juicy and delicious. The nachos, unfortunately, fell flat. The cheese was sparse, overheated, and dried onto the chips. Hopefully, it was a fluke and not the norm. I recommend requesting extra cheese, LIGHTLY melted, and add a scoop of sour cream and/or guac for moisture, if they have it. The service was fast and super friendly. Well, I must say I wasn't halfway prepared for this restaurant. I don't think I've ever come across one quite like this, or maybe half the time I do and don't even think about it. This has to be the most average restaurant in all of the Greater Richmond/Henrico area. It's almost like they take pride in it. The short ribs were ok, so were the sides. I had no issue with onion rings and Mac and cheese. Both of them were good, I guess? The service was ok. There was even a girl in the corner with a pretty voice singing but trying to play an (intentionally?) out of tune guitar.(she had a tuner that was possibly not read correctly?) . So she sounded about average for local dining entertainment. The prices were similarly priced to other restaurants in this general catagory. If you are looking for average eats at average prices in an average strip mall. Look no further. read more

My boyfriend and I went to this place on a wim because I saw the reviews. I will say we wanted to try BBQ but after seeing the Po'boys we had to try them!! They were so good!! We also had the fried pickles and they were a little different since they weren't in chips they were in slices. The ranch was rich and creamy and we couldn't be happier with this hole in the wall. Me and my daughter along with some friends tried this restaurant and let me tell you....... It was absolutely delicious!!!! We got there right before they stopped serving brunch! Our server Josh gave great customer service to the point he went the extra mile. We ordered chicken and waffles, blueberry French Toast and a brunch style burger!!! Everything was fixed with the right temperature and seasoning. It was soooooo good!!!! I'm so happy we decided to go in!!!! I've thought long and hard about whether or not to update my 5-star review from a few years ago. I've considered deleting it, but I'd hate to do that, since I did used to absolutely adore Hogshead. I spent years raving about them and recommending them to friends. But I was never a regular, and maybe that was my downfall? I had a horrific experience last month. I don't want to go into all the details here, because I'm fully aware that it's a pandemic and restaurants are struggling, and no, I'm not working in the business right now, so I can't attest to how hard it must be. I don't want to take away from that, and after I post this, I'll go back to posting positive experiences elsewhere. But here? They lied to my face after an hour+ wait time for ice cold food, and when presented with that, they were rude and made no attempts to fix the situation. The manager said she'd "pay for the meal herself," which was an odd way to put it considering we were leaving hungry. It doesn't seem like this was an isolated experience. This is one of three restaurants in the local restaurant Facebook group that has blown up to tens of thousands of members since the pandemic began that consistently is raved about more than any others, but if anyone dares to mention a less-than-superstar experience, they're trampled! It's mind boggling to me and not the right approach. I'm posting this to say that I used to wholeheartedly love this place, but I don't enjoy being lied to, I don't love aggressive comments from management, and I won't step foot back in Hogshead after that. Ever met a restaurant where the service is consistently pleasant and food consistently amazing? Welp folks, that place is Hogshead! I don't even know how I've never managed to review them, because I've been a fan of theirs since their early years, and back to the days of the small location. Oh, they have also majorly upgraded space, moving just up the road. The new space is great for spacing out and getting comfy for these southern eats. I've never been disappointed by a meal here, but I'll focus on my current fave dish, and what I've had on this recent visit. The fat cat! This perfectly fat and delish fish sandwich used to just be an occasional special, but has been maintaining a presence on the specials board (yayy!). Oh, always check the specials. I don't know the last time I've actually ordered a regular menu item, because the specials are always intriguing. Anyway, bottom line-the food is great. The fresh made limeades are heaven on earth. I barely drink sugary drinks, but this one is always an exception in advanced, pre-planned. No refills. You'll want more, trust me, so just order the large quart size and sip on that grace. I mentioned service, but thought it's worth mentioning too that I've also ordered takeout during the pandemic and it was handled great. Also, for dining-in, I felt like staff respected all cleanliness rules and were even willing to wipe down things at your request. I found out about Hogshead Cafe about 5 years ago when I first moved to Richmond. I'm disappointed in myself that I'm just now getting around to writing a review. I always thought about writing one, but it's just so hard to write about a place that I think is perfect in every way. I'll start off with what used to be my only complaint, which is the old location was ridiculously small. It was really uncomfortable to eat there because no matter where you sat, you were always getting bumped by an elbow or having to scoot over so someone could pass by. And because of the same reason, I even dreaded picking up food to go. But luckily a couple of months ago, they moved into the Gold's Gym plaza that's kind of across the street. Hogshead purchased the old Havana 59 building, which was quite an upgrade. It's more than 5 times the size of their last location. It even has a courtyard and an upstairs dining area! Sometimes when a company moves or expands, there's alway a chance that things won't be the same as they used to be. But that is totally not the case with Hogshead. The service is on point, the food tastes exactly the same, and they've never made a mistake on a to-go order for me. Speaking of the food, yes it's a bbq place, but pretty much everything on the menu is very unique. Best of all, the portions are huge and the price is right! So with that said, Hogshead Cafe is definitely one of the businesses in this area that I am most thankful for. read more

This cafe is a staple for me. I bring all my friends from out of town to try their Fat Cat - a spicy fried catfish sandwich, a favorite of mine. The ribs, the drinks, fried catfish and THE CHICHARONS OH MY GOD are scrumdiddlyumptious! everything is fresh and made with love. I hosted a cookout on 9/30/23 for a crowd of about 30 and we had food from Hogshead Cafe's catering menu. Pulled pork, pulled chicken, coleslaw, green beans, baked beans, potato salad and rolls. The food was simply out of this world and when I say there were no leftovers, not a crumb was spared. Three sauces were provided with the catering and I tried all three. While they were all very good, the Hog Sauce is what held a special place in my heart. So if you are having a big event and need delicious food that can feed the masses, then I would highly recommend that you try out catering from Hogshead Cafe! read more

So my wife and I took our daughter for birthday dinner and we were seated immediately. Ordered our soft drinks and took almost ten minutes to get ordered a appetizer and waited thirty five minutes and while waiting we ordered our meal which was a solid one hour wait time about fifteen minutes after finishing our appetizer another waitress brought another order of the same appetizer which I said we already ate. Pulled pork was dry and the rolls were dry like they had been sitting out for quite a while. French fries and onion rings were cold my wife didn't eat the onion rings. Daughter's bbq tacos were dry as well. Waitress didn't check back on us. I watched at least six people in the kitchen dawdling around. One man employee looked like a poorly dressed manager just walking around like a zombie. Every bbq restaurant I have ever been to has your meal ready in minutes. I would have walked out but didn't want to spoil our day. We were there just under two hours. I had to ask for the check and we left immediately. I would never go back and do not recommend anyone else go. I don't think that they will be in business much longer. Food and service is awful!! read more

Normally this is a good place but we had our first bad experience at Sunday Brunch. Arrived 1 pm, patio seating full but were immediately seated inside as there were plenty of empty tables. Server was great, promptly brought our drinks then took orders for appetizers and mains. Fast forward the hour and ten minutes it took before we got any food, when they brought the mains first followed immediately by the appetizers. Now the table is crowded and everyone has to decide what item to eat while their other item gets cold. The food itself was good. The "manager" who spoke with us said this was because they only had one fryer and they were crowded. Then fry our appetizers and bring them to the table so we could enjoy them while waiting an hour for the rest. I hope this isn't the first sign of them going downhill. read more

I wasn't hog wild about this café. They specialize in pork dishes and there's a reason one shouldn't deviate too far from the beaten path. I was excited when my daughter suggested this small eatery tucked in a nook off Broad Street. We love to try new places we've never been to before. The tables are kinda tight in here, but it's got really cute décor, vintage signs and lots of "piggy" items on the walls. My daughter ordered the fried fish tacos and she loved them! I chose the hand pulled chicken sandwich that come with a small cup of Cole slaw and a side. I ordered the yams. The chicken was chewy and dry, so I added some bbq sauce to moisten it a bit, the portion was big though. The cole slaw was watery. The yams looked liked they were canned and over cooked. I picked at my food while my daughter devoured hers! The server wasn't attentive. I tried to get her attention a couple of times to get another side, but she was oblivious. She did stop at our table after she saw my daughter's plate was empty to bring the check and offered us to go drinks, but by that time, I was over it. I'm sure she saw I barely touched my food but didn't address it. This little piggy doubts she'll come back to this "market" any time soon. I went "wee wee wee all the way home" and ate a bowl of cereal. If I do return, I'll get the pork... lesson learned. read more

Good food and great service. I ordered their barbecue sandwich and collard greens. The meat was Smokey and rich, but it did lack typical barbecue spices. That said adding their house made Carolina vinegar barbecue sauce along with a bit of their hot and sweet sauce upped the sandwich to heaven on a plate. The collards were the showstopper, tender and flavorful. The hush puppies were crispy, oniony delights. This place I used to consistently go to every week during college. I recommend their specials like Taco Tuesday, and Burger Nights on Thursdays where it's $3. Definitely get their Hogshead burger for $12-14 it's a great meal and you'll have a hard time finishing the burger with the bbq pork that comes on top of the burger and your choice of side. First time here and the service was high caliber as was the food. They have a number of unique menu items such as their crab stuffed pretzel appetizer with melted cheese and a cheese dip, too. I had the chicken cordon blue, but the chicken was pulled instead of a breast. It was very good. My wife had an ahi tuna Caesar salad which she greatly enjoyed. The restaurant was somewhat hard to find, as my car's navy system took me onto a street that dead ended. Glad I used Yelp's map to call up better directions and find this gem tucked between 2 Asian businesses. When we arrived, there was only one table occupied. When we left, the place was full. I had the Hog Dog - their specialty - a hot dog wrapped with bacon, deep fried and topped with BBQ sauce, pulled pork and cole slaw. I asked for the slaw on the side because I'm not usually much of a fan. I got the sweet potato fries as my side. Wow! The Hog Dog was delicious! The blend of flavors - even when I added a forkful of slaw - was amazing. The sweet potato fries were really tasty and the maple sauce fabulous. The fries could've been just a bit hotter, but it didn't stop me from eating all of them. The cole slaw was great, and I ended up eating all of it as well. For dessert I had the blackberry cobbler a la mode. The cobbler was just right - not to sweet, not too tart. With 2 soft drinks (my son wasn't hungry), the check was about $27. HogsHead Cafe brought me right back home. The place is small...maybe 10 tables max, and it fills up quickly. We arrived on a Saturday around noon. There were already 4-5 tables. We picked out a table and perused the menu. On the table is three sauces, the most important one and often the missing one is the vinegar-based sauce. You had me at vinegar. We decided on chili cheese fries with jalapeño added (so much for my diet) as our appetizer. My husband picked the buffalo shrimp po boy with potato salad and I picked pulled pork with baked beans and Mac and cheese. Chili cheese fries were sooo good. These were made with real ingredients--no fluorescent cheese sauce here. Really great and clearly homemade chili, and real cheese melted on top with red onions and a dill sour cream sauce for dipping. Honestly, if that was all I had, I would have been happy. Our entrees showed up as we were finishing the fries. Such beautiful plating! The chef here clearly loves what she or he does. We eat with our eyes first and my first impression was 'yes, please!' Came here with my Mom on a Wednesday right when they opened (11:30). By 11:50 the place was basically full. Obviously, the HogsHead is popular and I can see why. The menu has lots of great options and the specials board adds even more tempting choices. We had come here specifically for their hot dog. We decided to split the "Big Boner." This is a 1/2 lb, bacon-wrapped hot dog topped with pulled pork, bbq sauce and ribs. They were out of ribs the morning of our visit so they offered to put "pork wings" on top instead. These were like chicken wing drummettes but bigger. The hot dog was REALLY good. Great taste. Great snap b/c of the natural casing. The bacon wrapping is pretty weak. One single piece of bacon for a 7.5" hot dog barely covers anything. There was LOTS of pulled pork though. They have a delicious BBQ sauce and I added a lot to the dog. The pork wings were awesome. Sooooo meaty. I'd come back here just for those. We shared sides of baked beans, fries, and corn pudding. The baked beans and corn pudding were really good. The fries weren't. Standard crinkle cut, underseasoned. The only let-down of the meal. Service was good, attentive. Go to HogsHead. You don't be disappointed. read more

This place was awesome! They are doing really well with their regulations during this pandemic and I appreciate that. The baked beans were probably some of the best I have EVER had in my life! The bathroom was one of the cleanest I had ever been in, as well, which was unexpected, as the building seemed a little bit older (like most in Richmond). The pulled chicken was very good, the bun it was on was quite soft, and the coleslaw was excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The food took quite a bit of time, but that was most likely because they had a LOT of catering/to-go orders that they were making as well. Hands down the BEST BBQ I have EVER had! The specials are on their Facebook page and they change daily. I did read someone else's post about being out of everything. Since everything is made fresh, I recommend coming for lunch or early dinner. We went around 4pm for a friend's birthday celebration. (Group of 7 and a baby.) For appetizers I ordered the asparagus fries, fried green tomatoes, and the crab pizza with beer dip. My sister ordered the fried pickle spears. I will say my least favorite appetizer was the fried pickle spears because they're actually dipped in batter and fried totally different from like a bread or cornmeal coating. It was thick! However the asparagus fries came with some red sauce that is amazing and ranch which is OK. But I'm not a ranch fan. The fried green tomatoes came with a dill sauce and I will tell you taste amazing with whatever that red sauce is that came with the asparagus fries. The crab pretzel, I wish I had taken a picture of it. It came out on like a pizza pan. So when you think pretzel don't think pretzel from like the movies think pretzel like a medium size pizza. AMAZING! I had ordered the brisket dinner. The brisket was so tender and pulled apart so easily and because I am a Carolina barbecue fan, I just doused that all over my brisket and my side of greens. My sister ordered the choice of sides that comes with three different sides. She got the mac & cheese, broccoli casserole, and scalloped potatoes. I will tell you every single side that each one of us got and we tried with seasoned and delicious. And yes we tried the dessert. Those are all homemade as well. I got the banana pudding my sister got the blueberry bread pudding my other sister got the pineapple upside down and my friend got the lemon pie.
