50,000 horsepower...of stale bread
Ashley K.

what a letdown :( the highlight was the friendly service. the bar seems chill, and everyone there was very nice, so thanks. dang though, this sandwich was sad. $16 and hardly any meat, and also pretty skimpy amount of veggies. most of the sandwich was a stale-tasting, bland dry loaf of bread -- and horseradish. granted that spicy goodness is why i ordered the one i did -- the 50,000 horsepower -- but whew. it tasted like they crammed it all into one corner of the sandwich, so about a third of the way through, i got a nose full. tots were meh. nothing special, not bad. sadly wouldn't recommend this spot in an area sorely lacking in quick, reliable lunch spots. i guess go with royal grinders instead.

Commodore Hoagie

The Italian beef had about 3 pieces of giardinera and no au jus unless it was the little bit soaked into the bread? The commodore was mostly the spiciest tapenade ever. Not sure if any other toppings were in it My chips ordered are expired by 3 months. 2 stars because the sandwiches had potential.

Worst sandwich I've ever eaten. Or rather, NOT eaten since it went promptly in the trash after two bites. So tiny. Like the size of a Taco Bell bean and cheese burrito. The bread was massively underbaked, thin and stale. Filling was mostly iceberg lettuce and vinegar was the only flavor. Tater tots were too salty to eat. One of the saddest food experiences of my life.

Ok I'll start with the good...for the most part, this was a really tasty sandwich. The meat, cheese and veggies were all fresh and high quality, and the pickles, peppers, and gardiniera were great. If that's where the story ended, this would be a 5-star review. The beginning of the bad is that for a $14 sandwich, there definitely wasn't enough meat (eg 2 slices of salami), and the bread was fairly dry, particularly at the butt ends. They also claim their sandwiches are 9", but as you can see my roll barely hit the 8" mark. If that's where the story ended, this would be a 4-star review. Where my visit really went downhill was watching my cold sandwich be made with bare hands. That's right, no gloves used to handle the meat, lettuce, onions, pickles - anything. The woman working here was very nice, and I didn't have the heart to say anything...but I should have. It should be glaringly obvious, even if we weren't in the midst of a pandemic, that you need to wear gloves when preparing ready-to-eat food in a restaurant. It also happens to be ILLEGAL not to. Not cool, and I definitely can't recommend you eat an establishment that has this attitude towards food safety.

Located inside the Brauhaus coffee shop- took me a second to figure that out. All the cold sandwiches are $13. I got the American Hero, which was good but def not worth $13 plus tax. Seems a little expensive for what it is and it's not a huge sandwich.

Saw the Hog Island Hoagie sign as I was walking by Bauhaus Ballard coffee shop( I don't walk and stare at my phone), I decided to come back another day to grab a hoagie for lunch. It may be tough to find, but it's inside Bauhaus Ballard coffee shop, so just go in there like you are ordering a latte or something but order a hoagie instead. Menus are on the counter. Everything inside is the same, it's just they are making hoagies in the back along with serving coffee. I checked out the menu, they have about 10 hoagies to choose from, so I decided to order the "British Armada". It's a cold hoagie that had turkey, ham, roast beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions and those lil' pepperoncinis, and some other condiments like mustard, oil & vinegar etc. The hoagie roll was real good, it didn't collapse on me, seemed freshly baked that day. Pretty decently fat honker of a hoagie, about 10" long, and overall it was pretty tasty. All the ingredients seemed fresh, the meats were tasty, not sure how much is in-house but it was fine with me. Most of the hoagies were about $12, so it is a bit pricey for a sandwich. Not much other sides except chips and soda. There are vegan options for the vegans/vegetarians out there. Staff was friendly, it's the same staff as Bauhaus but they just use a different register to take your order on. I would come back to check out the other hoagies. I was pretty full after eating the entire hoagie, so I laid down on the couch afterwards and played Xbox.

The Italian

Best Italian sandwhich I have had in Seattle so far! Chef was super nice and we talked about the quality of the ingredients and where get them from.

I got delivery from Door Dash. The Italian hoagie was a good hoagie to be sure - the bread was simultaneously super fresh, sturdy, and tasty, and that can be a hard combo to come by when you get a sandwich delivered. Something felt like it was missing, though; like it was hearty and spicy, but there's a tangy element I like in an Italian hoagie that wasn't quite there. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. They also had Chickie's & Pete's Crab Fries flavored potato chips!! I didn't think anyone here even knew what Chickie's & Pete's was; like I was shocked. I've definitely never seen Herr's brand of anything on the west coast, literally ever. Also: I thought I had ordered a dill pickle on the side, but it was actually Herr's dill pickle flavored potato chips (oops). Very excellent chips. Would not have ordered 2 bags of chips, though. Not sure if they sell actual dill pickles or just the chips. For reference, delivery was a little over $32 for the sandwich and 2 bags of chips, including tip.

Monday is a busy day as it is ALL DAY HAPPY HOUR and there are real happy hour savings here. How about a cheeseburger with a generous side of fries for $8.95????? The fries were great, hot and crispy, with sides of ketchup and spicy ranch. The burger was real and honest, two of my highest compliments for a cheeseburger. Made to order exactly right. Bun was toasted and smeared with aioli and had a nice crisp. Solid toppings of lettuce, two slices of tomatoes, red onion, and several pickle chips. These were presented on the side so I could dress the burger as I liked. The whole thing was delicious. I had a well gin and tonic at the HH price of $8.95. Overall, a very good meal and a great deal. I was greeted as soon as I walked in, the busy bartender acknowledged me as soon as I sat down, and I was immediately drawn into conversation by the regulars on either side of me. As I often eat out solo, I'm used to striking up conversations with strangers, but I didn't have to make much effort here. Fun company! Solo eaters are welcome. I'll be back and I definitely recommend!

We were promptly greeted, grabbed a booth with its own TV, and got the first round of drinks going. While service lagged a bit through the stay I have a hard time complaining too much. To be honest we were a bit slower drinkers compared to some of the patrons, so I can see why were left a bit to our own. The food was outstanding. My wife crushed the quesabirria tacos (such bright and floral tasting shredded beef) and I had an incredibly tasty and overly filling Cod fish and chips. The only complaint I can really lob is towards the restroom space. Forgive me a minutes for getting on a soapbox here - but what is it about sprots bars and restrooms? I get that guys (and gals) can be pigs. I also get that this is a low priotity / non revenue generating space. But could you please spend just a little time / money on bleach, paint, and some decent fixtures? I know people are AWFUL and are always destroying things, no matter how well built and durable it is. But I just hate it when bars and resturants fail to update restrooms. Buckely was no exception. The excellent food quality sticker on the doors, the service and drink choice (and the outstanding meal on my table) speak to your ability to put together great quality and safety processes in the kitchen. It would be great if you could spend a bit of that same effort in bring up the standard in restroom. OK rant off! Great place and we will be back regardless.

These are the best cheese curds ever bc the batter isn't heavy like other cheese curds I've had. It's tempura battered so it's light and you can taste the cheese more. The jalapeño strawberry dip and ranch are good dips, but try them together and it will blow your mind. The fried green beans were okay. They did have a heavier batter on them and I wish they had the same batter the cheese curds had. The spicy dip was good! The rosemary popcorn was delicious! It had just enough butter and the perfect amount of rosemary where it's not overpowering. Once you get to the bottom, there's tons of butter and you just dip and soak it up with the popcorn. Also, PATTI was AMAZING!!!! She checked in on us throughout the evening. She's very sweet and I will be back bc of Patti!

I visited on Super Bowl Sunday, about 2-3hrs before the game to get seats. This was a good idea because there was only a handful of seats available. We were lucky enough to get a table for 4 of us. The hosts were very welcoming and go us seated at the bar when it was only two of us. When we informed them about an hour prior to kick off that we needed two more seats, they did their best to get us seated. It was very kind of them to even look around, let alone actually find us space. This was very much appreciated. The first hour or so, when there was only two of us, we had a few beers, the cheese curds and the chicken fried steak with potatoes. The beers were exactly what you think they would taste like and they weren't terribly expensive which was nice. The cheese curds were a great shareable item, good flavor and a fair amount of them. The chicken fried steak was good, nothing crazy, but not below average. Portion was good sand it was cooked right to have that nice crips on the outside with the gravy poured over top. I think the only thing I wasn't that big of a fan of was the potatoes, I should've opted for the tots or hash potatoes instead, but I'll have to try it again. Yes, I would recommend this place. Seems like a good place to meet with friends for a game and meet friends. I almost forgot to mention they have an outside area in the back was is covered so there's more than enough space to maneuver and enjoy your time.

I made a reservation ahead of time, but when we got there around 8 pm we realized we probably didn't need one because it was seat yourself and still pretty open. No complaints though, it made it easy to grab a table and settle in. The vibe was cool. Definitely a sports bar feel with TVs around, and as the night went on the DJ started getting set up which I can imagine makes it a fun spot on a Friday night for people meeting up after work or hanging out with friends. We decided to share a few things so we could try a little bit of everything. We ordered the catfish bites, lemon pepper wings, garlic parmesan wings, and macaroni and cheese. I'll start with the positives because the service was great. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful, which always makes a difference. Food-wise, it just didn't totally hit for me. The catfish bites had a really tasty batter, but the texture threw me off a little. I personally like my catfish cooked a little harder, and these were a bit soft for my liking. The lemon pepper wings were a little too salty for me, and the wings themselves weren't cooked quite the way I like them. I tend to like my wings cooked a little harder, so these felt a bit soft and bulky to me (if that makes sense). The garlic parmesan wings were okay flavor-wise, but still similar in texture. The macaroni and cheese was okay. Nothing bad, just pretty standard. The menu itself has a good mix of comfort food and bar favorites like chicken and waffles, shrimp & grits, burger & fries....so there are definitely options to try. Overall, the service were great, the vibe was cool and I can definitely see this being a fun spot once the DJ gets going and the place fills up. The food just didn't quite land for me personally this time. I gave it 3 stars, but if Yelp allowed half stars it would probably be closer to a 3.5 for me. I'd still be open to coming back and trying a few other things on the menu.
