Hoffers is a gem! It's worth the drive from most areas of the county for several reasons. First the owner Phil, was pleasant, and helpful when selecting a cigar. He knows his stuff on the puff. I selected several cigars for friends and ordered wine for the group as we were sitting outside. Second, selection of beer. Fantastic. Third, service was as you might expect from Le Mesa. Straightforward, down to earth. Fourth, prices were reasonable and HH had numerous beers and wine for 4 bucks! Last, ambiance...right out of Chicago neighborhood bars. Small, quaint, and pack with happy people. Nothing pretentious about this place. Parking can be tricky on weekends but it is free meters after 6pm. The first time I walked into Hoffer's I met a fellow that was there just to enjoy a couple of draft beers. I was there to indulge in a cigar. The cigar was really delightful and tasty. The fellow I was talking with mentioned that the place had class. I agreed with him as enjoyed this delicious cigar while listening to the eclectic and enjoyable mix of Phil's CD collection. The music was set to agreeable volume where people could easily converse. I begin to enjoy going there for a quiet spot to do some sketching for my political cartoons. I rarely drink, but have taken an occasion to enjoy some of the really smooth and classy beers. I can tell the owners really have taste when selecting the beers and cigars they sell. They also have free wi-fi if you like to surf the net and keep up with the latest news. Last but not least they have installed a large LCD TV on the smoking patio so you can root your favorite sports team and enjoy a fine beer and a good cigar. I'll be visiting this place on a regular basis and I highly recommend you do also. read more

This place was nice the the guy that helped me was nice enough. They have a great selection of beers which is great but i have 2 problems with this place. I showed up a half hour before they were going to close. My friends and i were talking outside about to go in and they locked the doors on us before we got a chance to open the door. This sucked because i just wanted to buy a cigar togo. I wish they would of told us we cant smoke in the building because it was going to close. Which leads me to my second point you cant even smoke at the bar you have to go to an out door patio. I didnt know this so i had to finish my cigar outside. Nice spot to get a draft beer that you can't easily find in a bottle. Service can be a mixed bag. But there beer selections are usually great. Hoffers is a great bar and they have a great cigar patio where you can smoke cigars (really, anything legal) and drink beer and wine. They have an outstanding beer selection including my all-time favorite, Palm. Their wine selection is excellent, too, according to my wife who likes wine. The folks that work at the bar are all really nice - all in all a very comfortable spot for hanging out, meeting new and old friends and enjoying the great San Diego weather. As a bonus there is a classic car show every Thursday in the summer in La Mesa so we often take a walk through the cars before tipping a libation or two. read more

I am no fan of cigars. I understand the allure of one. It seems to be a symbol of one's social position. If you can afford to smoke a cigar, you are obviously doing something right. Not that I feel somewhat less worthy to partake, I simply do not appreciate the act itself. I would much rather smoke a pipe as an alternative to cigarettes. Now that being said, I really enjoy this spot. I have been wondering when a touch of class would grace the La Mesa Village and it seems with the exodus of antique shops and influx of shops aimed at a younger, hipper audience that time might be closer at hand than I predicted. A step inside this shop is a step away from your schedule. There are two large humidors on either side of the entrance that boast a hefty selection of cigars that suit any price range (I myself have inquired but never imbibed). They also offer a modest selection of higher end cigarettes, though they lack any rolling or pipe tobacco. The bar in my opinion is the strongest attribute of this shop. They boast 20+ beers on tap at any one time ranging from a few domestic and micro-brews from local breweries to select imports including several Belgians (for which I am quite the sucker). I am no beer snob but if I am in the mood to delve into the finer brews, Hoffer's is the place to go. The bartender (I have only ever seen one) is pleasant and always glad to see you. The owner is a good man to have a chat with and knows plenty about cigars. There are three flat screen TV's for you sports fans including one outside. Overall, this is a great bar if you are looking for a relaxed, quite and intimate experience. I felt no pressure to smoke cigars and the staff and patrons are nothing below courteous and welcoming. Any bar where I can comfortably sit outside, drink a good beer, smoke a cigarette and enjoy a book or do some writing is perfect in my opinion. read more

I love how I can choose from one of their 24 beers on tap. This is the only place on La Mesa Blvd that has a wide range of beers. The bartenders are amazing! I've been coming here for nearly 8 years and the place never gets old. Phil, the owner, Ryan and the entire staff are top notch. The cigars, my main reason for coming to the shop, are always great. The choices of cigars change often and my go to cigars aways seem to be in stock. The beers, always 24 on tap, are awesome. Ryan changes the beer selections enough to temp almost every pallet. This is a great cigar shop. It does not have all of the frills that the higher end cigar bars have, but it is really down to earth, which I love, and has a great (huge) selection of beers and two (2) full walk in humidors with a large selection of cigars that should meet everyone's tastes. It is a great local hang out. I moved to La Mesa 2 years ago and found this favorite about a year ago. I would highly recommend dropping in and hanging out. The atmosphere here is always friendly, the barkeeps are absolutely the best and the cigar selection is fantastic. It's nice to have a place that aims to keep it personal. Very cool place. All kinds of fancy beers served up by a very nice fellow who will give you small tasters to see which beers you'll like. I dig that each beer has a preferred vessel in which it's served. I settled eventually on the Palm Amber, and it came in what I would describe as a giant brandy snifter. And as some other folks have said, you can get food delivered from various neighborhood establishments. We got some kick-ass carne asada chips from La Torta, and then hung around long enough to get a BBQ chicken pizza from some other joint (not as good as the chips). I know I shouldn't even say this, but the only thing that would make this place better for me would be light beer (just one?). Once the big beer got to be too much for me, with no small beer options, I had to switch to Diet Pepsi. Still, two thumbs up for this place. read more

Hoffer's is an ok cigar bar... they offer a pretty nice selection of atypical cigars which is great for those who like to try new and different smokes. While they did have a few mainstreams, their humidor consist primarily of low key and boutique brands. The prices here are pretty average, you're not scoring any deals but you're not paying inflation either. I didn't receive much help in the humidor which I wasn't a fan of... if I were a regular I'd expect to have been left on my own because I'd likely know the humidor inside and out. However, I wasn't a regular, it was my first time and I wanted an idea as to how their brands faired with those that I typically smoke. I didn't get that help and I was in the humidor for a while! Smoking here is only permitted outside on the patio, which isn't anything to huff about when you're in sunny California, but since the patio here is closed off by fencing and some sort of overhead barrier, you have absolutely no view. Think outdoor tent with siding. I'm certain it has everything to do with some type of law, but nevertheless, it is what it is. On a positive note, they do have a respectable flat screen, about 40 inches, and an outdoor heating lamp if needed. As for the bar, just beer and wine. This is somewhat offset however, by the bars food service. They don't prepare food in-house, but a number of local restaurants deliver to them... they're located right on a main street so there are quite a few options. Overall I rate Hoffers 3 out of 5 stars. Not having a view is bad, but an outdoor enclosure is worst. And while I love trying different cigars, I would have appreciated some recommendations--I probably would have purchased a lot more cigars too. read more

I am a big fan of the great beer selection and ever changing cigar choices. I am starting to get behind the Jazz Saturdays. For me it is hit or miss. This place is great! The beer selection is excellent, with very little overlap with my usual haunt (Main Tap Tavern in El Cajon) so there's always something new and exciting to try. The place is a little small, but it's cozy, and the smoking patio is cool. I know much more about beer than cigars, but their selection of smokes looked great from my amateur point of view. I could see myself increasing my cancer risk here often. read more

Hoffers, you never cease to amaze me. Max, Jen, and Phil treat me and my tues. night crew like family. I'm greeted by name, and they're even learning my pallatte! Jen and Max, who are usually there on tues nights, know what I most often order, and are pretty much always ready with a few samples of things I may like. I've started to widen my horizons! The selection in the humidor is very unique with cigars that you don't see too often, this is a major plus for me. If you are looking for "light" beers by any definition of the word- you've come to the wrong place. All the bad reviews for this bar are written by people who like to complain about insignificant stupid things. Hoffer's is literally my favorite bar period. The crowd mixture of young and older people is quite socially stimulating. The beer is delicious and once you come a couple times the bartenders get to know your preferences and saying "surprise me" is an option you can take with confidence. They have a back patio with heaters where you can enjoy your cigars or cigarettes. The pricing is well done and they offer wine and beer samplers for those people who want to get a good taste of several beers without getting super drunk (which will happen to you given the strength of their beers). They also offer shot glass tastes of beers you are considering which eliminates the disappointment factor. Overall a great place to wind down after work or catch a game with a tasty well crafted beer. If i could give it more than five stars i would, check this place out! read more

I come here exclusively for the cigars. They carry most of the popular brands that a cigar enthusiast may want. What I like about their selection is, they carry a lot of excellent brands that are typically not found in Cigar Aficionado but come highly rated by other reputable cigar sources like Cigar Authority and more like them. Of the cigars that came highly rated by non Cigar Aficionado sources, I haven't come across one that I didn't like or add to my permanent rotation and I am an admitted cigar snob. I gave them 4 stars and not 5 because you have to smoke outside on the patio. Lots of beer on tap and food( I can't speak on the beer or food because I haven't tried any of it yet). Stop by today for lunch in the La Mesa area and saw the sign. Curious I took my wife to check it out. We were greeted by the owner and one of his staff. Went straight to the cigars and found a brand I was looking for and a brand I regularly smoke.
