SO we're looking for the best friend chicken in the city, and all the older locals recommend this place. I've noticed in St. Louis that people from here since the 60's/70's stay true to the local places that have been around forever, which I HIGHLY respect, but sometimes - traditional isn't always better. Especially for the St. Louis food scene, which has grown astronomically in the recent years. I will say that prices are killer. Like, a whole platter of food for $10. That's hard to find anymore, so that was a pleasant surprise. They are traditional in their pricing and serving sizes, there's no denying that. Did I hate their food? No, it was good. But I wouldn't call it the best. It tasted like box mashed potatoes, canned corn, and frozen meat (although their beets were the bomb). Their fried chicken felt more like chicken fried in fish fry batter. It was good, but not memorable. As a restaurant that a lot of people talk up, it was honestly disappointing. Will we be back? Most likely. It's like, 5 minutes from our house. Food was still good (just not great) and the prices are awesome, so i think it's definitely worth another try. I have been on the search for the best wings/ fried chicken in St. Louis and based on some social media recommendations I decided to give Hodaks a chance. Headed in for dinner with my husband around 7pm on Friday night. It wasn't very packed so we were able to find a table pretty quickly. We ordered the Amaya Wings with baked beans and fries and the Hodaks wings with mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. Starting off with the sides, the only side we actually ended up eating was the fries. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from the high school cafeteria and the mixed veggies and baked beans tasted like they were just warmed from a can. Very disappointing. The wings: The Hodaks wings were fried to perfection however they had absolutely no seasoning or flavor! The Amayas wings saved the meal as they had a slight lemon pepper flavor but were also cooked well. While the food was less than mediocre the service was amazing. We finally made it out to a dine in meal before the new year, Yayyy! Celebrated with some cocktails from the full bar that came instantly when we ordered with our server, who was also great. She checked in throughout the meal and everything about our experience was perfect. No complaints whatsoever. Not sure how people say this is the best chicken place in St. Louis. Chicken is tender and juicy but has NO flavor or seasoning. Gus' has this place beat hands down. Service was garbage, girl had an attitude from the time we sat down until we left. Didn't bring refills or half of the items requested and when asked she stormed off or rolled her eyes. Meh. I was expecting more, I guess. It's typical family restaurant food, nothing special. I had the country fried steak with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Ok, so, remember the frozen vegetables you were served as a kid with the diced carrots, peas, and lima beans? That's what this was. Not knocking it Just don't expect fresh vegetables. The potatoes were as expected, the steak I found ok. The white gravy I found ok. 2 out of five stars. My wife had the fried chicken and she thought it was very good, I'm guessing that's why people come here. She gave it 4 out of 5 stars. We also had the fried mushrooms as an appetizer. HOT! They were right out of the fryer and they were really good. Breaded perfectly, they are recommended. Finally paid a visit to Hodak's after years of meaning to try it and boy it did not disappoint! The chicken was delicious but I've had better in my life. Definitely in the top 5 if not top 3 best places though. Probably underrated and maybe unpopular opinion but I thought their sweet tea was really delicious! Not too sweet- just right! I was honestly really impressed with the onion rings. It's rare to enjoy them without the onion sliding completely out of the breading and Hodak's has somehow done a great job at keeping that experience to a minimum. I think the cherry on top was our waiter, Tim. He was so kind, fun, and offered wonderful recommendations. Such a friendly, casual, and warm experience all around. We will definitely be coming back when we are in need of a nice "home-cooked" meal (without actually cooking at home of course). read more

We went around 1:30pm so there was a decent lunch crowd but not too busy. Friendly staff, bartender, & waitress. You seat yourself so we decided on a booth by the window. I ordered the 4 piece leg dinner w 2 sides..a baked potato and slaw. The slaw was quite vinegary so the waitress substituted it w baked beans. The other person in my party ordered the 1/2 chicken w macaroni and fries. The macaroni was meh. The fried chicken was tasty and not greasy like some of the other reviews stated. If I'm here alone I'll sit at the bar. The ice tea is great. I've had most of their sides( crinkle fries!), Mac and cheese is good. Ranch is awesome! I tend to go to the wings, sammies hot or mamas sticky wings. Service is friendly and most of the servers who have been there, have been for many years. They have a pretty intense menu and everything I've tried is so good. They have a daily special and daily veggie too. Never tried the deserts but they look amazing! I'm always too stuffed to give them a try! Kid friendly restaurant and tons of seating. Great for groups but make sure your total party is there otherwise they won't seat you. We started with the toasted raviolis - our friend from the California Bay Area had yet to try our civic starter - and they were delicious, even without a sprinkling of cheese. Next I ordered the half chicken with two sides (fries and slaw -but you can do substitutions) while our friend went for the chicken drumsticks plate (again, two sides). We got the Hodak toothpick (nothin' special), the mozzarella sticks (10/10), and mamma's sticky wings (Awesome flavor by the way) for our appetizers. Who doesn't love fried chicken? I was recommended this place from a friend while in town and it was great! Hodak's is the local fried chicken spot in town and we loved it! They are the number one fried chicken place in St Louis which is pretty cool too. We came here on a Tuesday night and it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and took a look at the menu. I ended up getting a 1/2 fried chicken plate to share since it came with four pieces. We got baked beans, slaw, and french fries as our sides. We also got the jalapeno poppers and the deep fried mushrooms as an appetizer. This was so much food! Way more food then we needed so we ended up taking some leftovers back to the hotel. The chicken was really good. It was very moisture and light on the batter so it wasn't too heavy. The deep fried mushrooms and the jalapeno poppers were good too! The jalapeno poppers with ranch were amazing! I loved their ranch! It was made it house and they also had a sweet spicy sauce too. The baked beans were my favorite side. Everything was made to order and very fresh! We had great service here and good food. What more could you ask? They even had a big list of draft and bottled beers to choose from!
