I have enjoyed the RC car hobby, especially with my kids. I've been going to this store and have purchased four RC units. It's been a lot of fun and their service is top-notch here. Every one of the guys here are great. I have worked with Gene and Mike in particular.. always A+ service. Another thing I like about all these guys they're very knowledgeable, and they just share so much information. Very educational. Today I was here and I forgot my remote and I was 2 miles away and they took the time to look up my number and called me. They're just great guys that enjoy what they're doing and have a good time. Lastly, their prices are fair. In this hobby, you're gonna have things that need to be maintained and repaired from time to time. So don't go on Amazon and buy from Jeff Bezos and then come here thinking that they can fix it when you just try to save $10. Support local and support these guys. My first time here I was not expecting much, but I have to admit this place is crammed full of hobby items, such as models, rockets, planes, and everything in between. One other thing I noticed is that they seem to have security cameras on every single aisle in this 2000 square-foot space (I counted 14). Yes, many yelpers have commented that you can find much of the stuff online, but it's much more exciting to see it all in one place at one time. Coming in here reminded me of my teenage years when I used to build models and dioramas. Along with all the model, rocketry, cars, planes, boats, they also have puzzles and toys. Many of their remote controlled items are close to $100 or more. Definitely a nice hobby shop if you're into this kind of thing. Plenty of pictures below to get you through the door. read more

We stopped in here when I saw the sign on the back of the building. This store is full from top to bottom of all sorts of hobbyist supplies, from model kits to miniature trees, to remote control cars. If you're into this you'll be pleased to be here. For me tho, I only found the little animal figures in the front interesting. They were better priced than other places. The employees were friendly and helpful when I asked about a price. The store was full of very low and obvious cameras so that was a bit offputting but I get it. It's so funny that I've been to this same strip of stores and never realized this place was here. Stopped by because I was somewhat in the area and needed parts but did not want to wait for them to ship via online. Associate started to help me, got some items together for me, "said be right back" after showing me to some QS8 plugs. I then waiting for him for about 5 mins, he walked past me and told the other guy he was going out for coffee. I told that other guy to ring my stuff and I'd be on my way. Honestly, I wish I can do more to this business as it looks like it's thriving but it seems to be struggling too much in space and the workers there can't move around. People end up shuffling, people end up tripping over things but you can see the workers rushing there for the last 30 minutes that the store was operating over there. I asked for a niche product to someone (a mini 4wd), and the guys are more than helpful to get me there. The inventory was lacking, but I bought $100 worth of stuff from them, considering that it'a a hobby that's rarely played. It's fair to say that they're trying their best to help everyone and all these negative reviews in history just means that they need to get a new office. You guys keep trying. I apologize to anyone shopping at Hobbytown on Sunday, August 11th. I brought my 4 and 2 year-old sons to this store, and their frequent yells of "WOW!", "WHOAH! ANOTHER AIRPLANE", "ELECTRIC TRAIN!" must have been distracting and a little deafening. Ok, the train one was actually me. I'll keep it simple here. I bought my son hos first rc car there, it had a bad transmitter but I had lost the receipt. They wouldn't even deal with me, and told me to call the manufacturer. They know they're the only shop in the area so they do what they want. All I wanted to do was exchange the my son's cer for one that actually worked, way to get the kids into the hobby "hobbytown". Bought a defective product from here. All they did was offer me store credit since they couldn't replace the unit. Owner won't call me or talk to me about it. This is an amazing store in terms of product, amazing small parts, educational toys and books, and many many tiny items. I especially like all the educational items that are available........... But, but, but the problem with this location are the employees. They are not very friendly and were of zero help. I was so excited to be inside but within 3 minutes no-help. Even though I ended up spending over $70, the employees made me feel like I was pretty much wasting their time......... It's a shame. I went here to get a birthday present for my boyfriend. I walked in, and 3 employees were standing behind the counter, and I got a very unwelcomed "hello", I didnt think anything of it. was looking at the model cars, Gundams, and was looking for a model tank. I found the gundam I wanted to get, but couldnt find the car or tank, I was looking back and forth throughout the wall where all the models are, for at least 10 min, with no one asking me if I needed help looking for other stuff. I went up to the counter, and asked a older gentlemen if they had any tank models, and that I saw the World War II airplane type models, but no tanks. This is what I got back "They are over there, at the end of all the models on the wall" not here let me help you look" clearly I hadnt found them over there... I went back to look on the wall, and still ANOTHER 10 minutes went by, and no help. I gave up and just got the Gundam. When I went to the counter, the same gentlemen from before goes, very rudly: Him: "Is that a gift for someone" Me: "Yes it is" Him:"have they built one before" Me:"yes" Him "oh ok" Me: "does it come with..." and before I could finish he interrupted me Him: "It comes with everything" Now some might think this isnt bad customer service, but I have worked retail before, and we strived to make people happy, asked if they needed any help, and were polite, even if that customer was rude. Maybe I'm just used to that customer service, but I did see other people in there, guys mostly, and they were getting helped and friendly comments. I felt as if it was because I was a women. I'm an electrical engineer, so maybe I DON'T understand the subtleties of gears vs pulleys. Except I do. (I get to be smug here, everything considered) I walked in and asked if they had a pulley to fit the shaft of a motor I had brought along. I got laughed at - they don't carry "that kind of thing" there. They have like a billion gears, but no pulleys anywhere. As if I was crazy to consider using a pulley in some project. huh? They get two stars because there is a lot of useful stuff there, but their staff is condescending as hell, and I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. I think couple of the reviews are bit unfair so let's set the right setting - this store's primary business is carrying RC stuff and model kits. They also carry rockets and hobby/education models (like solar power car - the stuff you learn in your high school science class). However, the other reviews were fair that the store has a very good selection of main/popular brands and models of RC. I was not only surprised at their selection, but their prices as well. I found the prices to be very competitive and not a total ripoff. They also have a very good parts & accessories at competitive prices. I've shop frequently (ok, way too often) at this store and the staff for the most part have been very helpful. Once, I had to buy a replacement motor - they did the labor for free by swappping it out and also making few adjustments on the car. I also blew something else out - they didn't carry the part but they special ordered it and I got it in 3 days. They also have a decent selection of model kits as well as paints & stuff. Again, the prices are right on. On Saturday afternoons, they set up a on-road race course in their parking lot. read more

A large portion of the store is dedicated to remote control cars, planes, boats, etc and the parts for them, but there are tons of other items mixed in as well. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and made suggestions on what to buy based on what I expressed interest in. They seemed genuinely interested in the products, and shared first hand experiences they had with them "out in the field". read more

Kinda expensive -- this is the hobby store for the hobby enthusiast -- so lots of very specific things here. Whenever I go in here I can tell that there are "regulars" who are here often by the way that you hear customers talking to the sales people. They do a remote control car race on most weekends -- totally entertaining and fun! read more

I have been working on plastics and then large scale RC aircraft since I was 16 and now I'm 67, and yes you do run into some items missing or damaged or not quite molded or cut properly but that is the nature of the 'hobby' business (you as the customer). Grumpy Old Dudes like me get it!! You young folk (and some old gaffers) don't get it and want everything done 'now', instant gratification. Sorry for all you snow flakes that just can't handle it. I've red the reviews and come on! In most cases the store has tried to accommodate but y'all just don't give a frack. The HT person that answers the poor reviews shows just what the store has done for you to accommodate you but nope, you didn't care you just kept on going. Get a life!! Now, I have been in the North Austin store several times and have had no issues what so ever. Yes, you might find a new employee that does not know everything that's in the store but that's just you catching that person at the wrong time in his employment. Remember, YOU didn't know everything about everything (like you think you do) when you started your job or jobs. Be kind, be understanding and only complain when there is truly something to complain about - question it in the store immediately. Great place to buy RC and hobby items. Always a large stock. They are nice and help me out anytime I need assistance. Bought a ton of parts there and the prices are decent. If you buy a Remote Control car and break it... lol it's not the hobby shop fault... if you buy a Traxxas and break that you must have done something pretty stupid. Those things are tanks. They also have a racing program that is open to just about anyone... They even rents cars to race most of the time... just asks a racer for that program. read more

Don't waste your time going in the store for help. If the last few years I have spent several thousand dollars on helicopters, cars, batteries, remotes. You walk in for a little help to bind a new plane and I got did you call the manufacturer. I also got please bring your own tools. I needed a small Philips. I will not ever shop again at this location. The customer service is probably the worst I experienced in any store. I will buy the FPV goggles and camera I was going to buy online. I would go for Zero Stars, if I could!! Brought a Blade Intructix drone from them on Sun, Jan 15. Took it home charged the battery, the drone flew great, its was quiet too, then I landed it, and one of the props flew off. Thinking it was not on good I put the prop back on, and flew it again, and the prop came off, again. The spare battery that I purchased was charged, so switched to the second battery, and on the landing two props came off, so I boxed everything back up for return. Today, Jan 22, I went back to the Parmer Lane HobbyTown where I purchased it, and they refused to give me my money back. I told them to keep it, and walked out the store. This is my first experience with this store and HobbyTown, and although they do have lots of nice stuff, I will be the wiser and go to Amazon to get things, because they do have a good return policy. After going by the Traxxas trailer way too many times during X Games, I decided I had to have an RC car. Did some research, and decided to visit my local hobby shop, to get some good advice on what to buy. Advice was good, but the color of the car I wanted was not; all they had was silver. Was told they could order the color I wanted, but decided to think about it for just a bit more, so left. "A bit more" equated to 90 minutes, and when I called back to order, they told me they couldn't take order over the phone. Checking my calendar quickly to make sure it wasn't 1967, I told them I'd stop down in the next couple of days. I did, only to be told by the same guy that told me orders couldn't be taken over the phone that I couldn't order the color I wanted. Checking to see I wasn't talking to Henry Ford, I decided if I was buying a $675 RC car, I was damn sure I would get the color I wanted, so left the store, ordered on the internet, (no sales tax), and picked it up 3 days later at the FedEx office around the corner from this place. I'll keep my business local, but only when the shopkeeper is interested in it. read more
