Merit Homes did an outstanding job on our house. Another reviewer mentioned they cut down a lot of…read moreimportant trees and they did cut down many of the trees that were on the lots of our subdivision, but any builder is going to do that to a greater or lesser degree by necessity. If you have a neighbor that has developed an extraordinarily deep and abiding affection for the scrub pines where a new house is destined to be, well, maybe you could consult a tree priest to help them transplant the soul of their beloved conifers into a nearby perennial or a stand of bamboo. It worked in Avatar so it might work for you.* With true love anything is possible. Disclaimer* This only worked once and it was for an 8' blue alien that happened to be in love with a paraplegic Marine. Also it was in a movie. Do what your conscience requires and if need be plant extra hardwood trees to control erosion and salve your conscience. Go wild with your green thumb. As it is they left sturdy trees where they could, cleared the scrub, and left very large level lots that drain well and appear to have stable soil(which is almost unheard of for our area). **UPDATE on the soil** The sod that they used on our homes is not holding up well and has very high clay content that means certain areas that don't want to drain. Most of it drains, but there are spots that are constantly wet. We are working with Merit now to do something about it. I will update this space. **END UPDATE The houses trend toward contemporary, but have cool little details that I haven't seen in other builder's houses. Details like AC outlets in the eaves up near the roof lines so you can put up your Christmas lights. Real wood doors and stair cases that have actual stain on them. LED or fluorescent lights to save power and last for years. High ceilings on both the lower AND upper floors. CAT5E wiring that terminates into low voltage panels that are well organized. Power panels that have a few slots left in case you want to put in an electric car charger or lift in your garage. Gravel or stone paths from all exterior side doors to keep dirt out. 4000PSI concrete with fibers for strength. 2x6 exterior studs all the way around to have plenty of depth for insulation. It is the little details that make a home livable and they did a good job leaving flexibility for us as home owners. There are little hobgoblins that have to chased down (some of the stone on our fireplace had to be reseated because it was set in a low temperature adhesive that dripped), but they quickly came in and replaced it. Average response time is about a day or two and their folks are quick to take off their shoes to keep things clean. I have only owned our house for a few weeks thus far, but I can say it has been my best new house purchasing experience. I'll reserve judgment and retain the right to update this review in case my house slides off into Lake Washington or the spirit of dead raccoons invade my TV. Best Regards, -BH

What we really appreciated was that, unlike other realtors, they didn't pressure us to go over our budget or try to talk us into homes that we didn't love. In fact, they helped keep us grounded when we looked at a few fixer uppers, and helped us really think through the costs associated with updating it. They were extremely fast in writing up offers, which is necessary in this market, as many of the homes we looked at were off the market within a week. We love the house we bought through Team Scott and that we know we can trust them in the future. After we purchased our home through them, it was time to sell our condo. I can't stress enough the importance of photos when trying to sell your home, and Jim and Denise know this. The photos they took were amazing! They sold our condo within a week, an extremely difficult task considering the local condo market at the time. The first thing Tom told me when he came over for the first day of work was: "How did you find…read morethese guys? They can't find new customers and all their existing customers aged out/died". We probably should have ran at this point. We had a quote from Johnson Brothers Construction to rebuild our shower that had a leaking drain. Their quote was very competitive ($10k + tax) and they seemed knowledgable enough, so we went with them, aware that things might go over the quoted amount given that every projects has unknown. We did have some unforeseen things happen, requiring an extra day of labor to strengthen the floor and some weirdness about the existing drain setup that was taken care of by a plumber in an hour. Yet, here we are, two months later with a total bill that is well over twice the quoted amount, a tiling job that is sub-par and a lot of finishing touches are still missing. When you hire a general contractor, you expect them to guarantee some level of quality and to advocate on your behalf with subcontractors. In our case, the tiling subcontractor not only did a horrible job, but also tried to increase the cost for some work we already sign-off on and way over ordered one of the types of tiles (that we had to pay for). In the end the subcontractor fixed as much as they could short of redoing the whole floor, but we were the one fighting for it and inspecting the work. JBC just stood by. JBC also had two subcontractor give us quote for some drywall for a transition strip. Their interfacing between these subcontractors is essentially a series of screenshots of iMessage conversations they have with those subs. I made it clear to the drywall sub that I wanted quotes for the different parts of the job. He gives us one opaque quote with possibly an extra $100 (??). The transition strip sub, what we hear is that he'll come by by the end of next week. Saturday comes and he is no where to be found. JBC gave no updates along the way. I could also talk about their opaque billing practices, how they're charging for labor hours that don't seem to line up with what I can see on my front door camera. Or how they have 3 guys show up for the same amount of time and yet one of them is charging for an extra half hour? Honestly I could go on and on. We definitely regret going with JBC for our job. I should have heeded my gut feeling when Tom said what he did. You definitely should.
